Chapter 1928

Penulis: Chweety
"I heard you were injured. I was busy the past few days and couldn't come earlier." Charles offered a brief explanation.

His gaze settled on Liliana, assessing her condition. She seemed to be doing relatively well. "Looks like you're fine now."

"Yes, I'm fine. It wasn't a serious injury to begin with." Liliana fidgeted with her fingers, feeling slightly uneasy. "Um… It's already so late. Is there something else you need, Charles?"

Charles watched her silently, his sharp eyes fixed on her. He did not speak for a long time, merely observing her.

Liliana felt restless under his scrutiny, shifting uncomfortably.

"Injuries to muscles and bones take a while to heal. You should focus on resting for now and avoid any strenuous activities."

"But…" Liliana hesitated. She wanted to tell him she was already fine and planned to be discharged in a few days to return to work.

She had just started her internship, and this accident happened after only a few days on the job.

"Mm."Charles acknowledged with a brief hum before lifting his gaze to Sean. "How much longer does she need to stay in the hospital? What exactly is her condition?"Sean glanced at Charles' serious expression and smirked. "Who would've thought the ruthless and decisive Charles Hoffman, according to the rumors at least, would care so much about his half-sister?"Charles frowned. "Cut the sarcasm. How's Liliana?""She's fine for now, and her body should recover quickly." Sean paused, his gaze turning somber."But after running a full examination, we found that due to her past experiences, some of her bodily functions have been affected. Her bone density is lower than average, making her more prone to fractures. And since she hit her head during the fall, I recommend keeping her under observation for a while longer."Hearing this, Charles' brows knitted together tightly. "That's not the answer I wanted to hear. You know that.""Give me some time."Charles narrowed his eyes. "I tru

Liliana stayed in the hospital for about half a month. Even though she felt like she had almost fully recovered, the hospital staff insisted she still needed rest and further observation. At first, she did not think much of it, but when even Tania started finding it odd, Liliana began to feel that something was off.She asked her attending doctor and the nurses about her condition, but they firmly insisted she had not completely healed and needed more time to recuperate. No matter how much Liliana reassured them that she was fine, they refused to discharge her.Eventually, when they realized they could not convince her to stay any longer, they told her to speak with Sean as he was the one who had given the orders regarding her hospitalization.Liliana initially did not want to go to Sean, but staying in the hospital indefinitely was not an option either. Besides, she was still in the middle of her internship, and being absent from the company for too long was becoming unreasonable.

Leighton turned to Joanna with a bright smile and said, "Ms. Jacquet, Mr. Smith's surgery is going to take a while. If there's anything urgent, I can pass along a message for you, or… you can wait inside and rest until he's available.""Thank you, Leighton." Joanna responded graciously. Her polite and warm demeanor made it hard for anyone to dislike her.Liliana had already turned to leave, but hearing such obvious preferential treatment made her pause. "Leighton, is it? I'm here to see Mr. Smith for a legitimate reason. It's about my medical condition."Leighton, growing visibly impatient, shot her a look. "Didn't I just tell you? Mr. Smith is in surgery and doesn't have time to see you.""Leighton," Joanna interjected at just the right moment, noticing the rising tension between them. "Liliana is actually Sean's and my junior. She's here as a patient at the hospital."With a soft smile, Joanna turned to Liliana. "Liliana, are you still unwell? The last time I saw you was half a

Leighton sucked in a sharp breath. "D-Dr. Smith!"Liliana also sensed the sudden chill in the air. She narrowed her eyes slightly and turned her head, only to see Sean standing there. He held his white coat in one hand while the other was casually tucked into his trouser pocket. His cold, piercing gaze locked on hers, chilling her to the bone. She frowned slightly and parted her lips as if to speak but ultimately said nothing. Instead, she simply smiled. "Mr. Smith, your timing is perfect. I've fully recovered, yet for some reason, your hospital's doctors and nurses insist I remain admitted. Anyone who doesn't know better might think your hospital enjoys squeezing money out of patients."Sean did not say a word, but his icy stare remained fixed on her, indifferent and unyielding.Liliana felt uneasy under his gaze.In front of Sean, she never seemed capable of maintaining her composure. No matter how much she tried, she could not ignore the overwhelming presence he exuded.Takin

Liliana handed the phone back to Sean and showed a faint smile. "Can I ask what exactly is wrong with my body that requires me to stay in the hospital?"Sean furrowed his brows, but before he could respond, Liliana chuckled lightly. "Never mind. I'm fine now. If there's nothing else, I'll be heading back."Without waiting for a response or even sparing Sean another glance, she turned and walked away.Sean's fingers still held traces of her warmth, yet she had already left without hesitation as if she had no lingering attachment whatsoever.Joanna, who had been silently observing their interaction, felt her face grow increasingly pale. Though she did not show it, the way Sean and Liliana had behaved just now was nothing like that of two people unfamiliar with each other.Sean even knew Liliana's brother's phone number. From the conversation between them, it was evident that Sean and her brother were more than just acquaintances. They were familiar with each other, even close.More

"Thank you for the reminder, Ms. Jacquet!"Leighton watched Joanna leave, but something felt off. However, he did not dwell on it for too long and quickly returned to his work.Sean sat in his office for a while, still holding his phone. His mind replayed what Liliana had said to Leighton and the others earlier. From past to present, he had never seen her lose her temper like that. He had always assumed she was weak, which was precisely why he had felt the need to protect her. When Sean stepped out of his office, Leighton immediately stood up. "Mr. Smith!"Sean gave a slight nod and took a few steps before pausing. His sharp gaze landed on Leighton. "From now on, no one is allowed into my office without my permission. Do you understand?"Leighton's face turned pale. "What about Ms. Jacquet?""Does she not count as a person?" Sean retorted with an indifferent tone. "If you can't handle this job properly, I can replace you. There are plenty of capable people out there. What do you

Autumn had painted Brookville in shades of gold and crimson when Noelle Shaw stepped off the plane. She grabbed her suitcase and walked out into the crisp air, a familiar sense of home wrapping around her.A whole year had passed since she left to pursue a corporate training program overseas, and now, she was back just in time. Her third anniversary with her boyfriend Xavier Harris was just days away, and she had been working nonstop to make it back early enough to surprise him.She hailed a cab and headed straight for Xavier's office. The moment she walked through the front doors, Alice, the receptionist, gave her a look of total shock. "Ms. Shaw? You’re back? Are you here for the CEO's engagement party?"Noelle's brow creased in confusion. "The CEO's engagement party? What are you talking about, Alice?""It's Mr. Harris's engagement party with your sister!""What?" Noelle's heart skipped a beat, and the happiness drained from her face. "Whose engagement party?"Alice seemed to

Noelle bolted from the hotel, her previously defiant face now streaked with tears.Out of nowhere, a black Cayenne screeched to a halt, its tires screaming against the pavement. Caught off guard, she tumbled to the ground. The driver gulped, his eyes darting to the man in the back seat, "Sir... Sir?"The man in the back, unfazed by the nearby accident, merely glanced at the passenger seat beside him. "Ronald, go see what happened.""Right away, sir." Ronald was out of the car in a flash, checking the front for any damage.About six feet ahead of the car, a woman sat on the ground with her eyes wide open, looking totally freaked out. Her cheeks were streaked with tears, and she had obviously been crying. "Miss? Are you okay? Do you need a ride to the hospital?"Noelle was scared out of her wits. She just gazed at Ronald, lost in shock, until she finally managed to pull herself together and stand up. Without a word, she tried to sidestep him, eager to get away.Ronald was puzzled

Liliana only smiled faintly. "Wouldn't it be good for her to be with Sean? They're the perfect match—one's talented and the other's beautiful. They suit each other well."She spoke so lightly as if it did not matter, but Tania gave her a frustrated glare. "Are you trying to drive me crazy?"Liliana remained silent, leaving Tania to sigh. "I really think Sean has feelings for you. Think about it. Yes, you're both from the same university, but there are so many people at that university. If Sean were truly that helpful to everyone, wouldn't he be overwhelmed?""So?""So, I think he treats you differently. You didn't see it happen, but when you needed surgery, the doctor hesitated. It was Sean who immediately stepped in and said he would operate on you himself. "He even said that if anything went wrong, he'd take full responsibility. Who says something like that? A family member would! He was treating you like family!"Liliana frowned slightly. "You're exaggerating. It was probably

Liliana frowned, finding Joanna's words somewhat odd.In truth, she and Joanna were not close, nor did they have much interaction. The fact that Joanna had come to visit her was already strange enough. Now that she was bringing up that incident, Liliana could not quite figure out Joanna's intentions, but something about it felt off."Thank you for your concern, Joanna," Liliana said lightly. "Tania, bring a chair for Joanna.""No need to trouble yourselves," Joanna replied with a soft smile. "I'll just stand for a while. I've already been sitting with Sean for quite some time."As she spoke, her eyes never left Liliana.Liliana was momentarily stunned before clenching her fists slightly. However, she maintained a composed expression, revealing nothing of her thoughts."You and Sean seem to have a great relationship," Liliana said with a faint smile. "It looks like you're not here to see me but rather to talk to Sean."Her tone carried a teasing lilt, smooth and pleasant to the
