Ring! Ring! Ring!
Evina immediately sat up in bed. She hurriedly stood up, put on her slippers and grabbed on her towel. Like her usual morning routine, she was about to take a bath. It was until she realized that she had nowhere to go.
“It must be my body clock or something. You’re now officially a bum, Evina. Welcome to your new life.” She tapped her head three times, making sure it would work properly.
She went back to her bed and slumped back to her soft pillows before picking up her phone to check on her news feeds. Now she has all the time in the world to do so.
As she was scanning her social media account, she saw that her former classmate just posted pictures of herself on stage with a thousand likes and hearts. She was recently promoted by the company that she was working for.
“I’m sure she just licked her boss’ feet.” Evina rolled her eyes.
She continued to scroll up her phone some more. As she did so, her face which was previously relaxed and blissful crumpled away.
“Shut up and get a job.”
“Work your ass off. It’s not yet Saturday.”
These were the quotes that popped up on her screen as if they were just talking to her.
“Whatever!” She threw her phone on her bed and just went to the bathroom to take a shower.
She was humming while she scrubbed her body when something happened that she did not expect. The water stopped dropping from the shower head. And she was in the middle of washing the soap suds from her naked body.
“What the hell?” She snapped as she shook the shower hose, hoping it was merciful enough to help her finish her bath ritual.
To her joy, it managed to give her a half bucket of water before it finally died.
She finished putting on a white loose shirt and a pair of denim mini shorts. After that, she immediately scampered to the table. She usually placed her water consumption bill there.
“Is it three months now?” Evina blubbered before she checked on her phone installment plan.
“It’s also due this week?” Her hand flew to clutch her chest. She was about to scan the papers in her hand for her other accounts when someone knocked on the door. It was Mr. Hou, their landlord.
“I hate to break the news, Evina. But you have to pay your rent now. It’s been five months since your last payment. You’re lucky to still be living here, you know,” he said in a gruff, yet still kind manner.
“Yes, Mr. Hou. I will give it to you within this week. I promise,” Evina answered him with a positive demeanor. Even though her shoulders were already slumped from hopelessness.
“You should give it ASAP. My boss is planning to do a surprise inspection sometime this month. Don’t let him catch on to you,” The landlord now warned her with his hands on his waist.
“Yes, Mr. Hou.” Evina sighed as she recalled one situation where a tenant was forcefully dragged out.
As soon as Mr Hou left, she immediately ducked under her blankets and stared at her white sheets.
“Should I just apologize to the Director now?” She muttered to herself, wondering how she would be able to come up with money to pay her dues.
She was in a tight spot. But she would never regret all the help that she had given to her sister’s family when they were down and out.
A bright idea came to her mind, making her jump up from the bed and into her table where her laptop was.
“There must be a job opportunity out there that is in need of my precious talents,” she grinned to herself, imagining that she would have a job in no time.
Her fingers typed on search engines which offered possibilities of job hiring.
“Office managers.” “Office administrators.” “Administrative assistants.”
Though there were a lot, the location of the companies are miles away from her place and Maria. The only company that was open for hiring was the Sapphire Co.
There were virtual assistant jobs that were open, so she tried to send her CV to them. However, she knew she couldn’t earn from them as soon as possible.
She decided to look for other part-time jobs for the meantime.
“Part Time Tutor? No, I’m impatient with kids.”
“Call Center Agent? I will just be fired again. I can’t stand irate clients.”
“House Cleaner?” Evina looked at her house.
Her dirty laundry for two weeks was just beside her bed. The sink was full of her used plates and mugs. And her floor was sticky with stains from juice spills.
She shook her head as she continued to job hunt. Her eyelids were almost falling from weariness when a call came from her phone. It was from Cynthia.
Evina’s eyes lit as she also wanted to know what happened to her after their last conversation. She was so engrossed with her own life that she wasn’t able to communicate with her after the incident. It wasn’t easy to divulge such confidential information.
“Hello, Cynthia. It’s good to hear your voice. How are you?” She greeted her with an enthusiastic voice.
“Hi, Evina. I’m great. The Board had a meeting a while ago and Director Zhou just got fired. Thanks to you,” Cynthia reported to her at the other end of the line.
“Wow, that’s fast. I didn’t expect that,” Evina blurted in disbelief as she closed down her laptop.
She was not bluffing when she told Director Zhou that she would report it to the police. In fact, she had already requested help from a staff member to submit it.
“Perhaps it was intercepted in order to prevent the company’s name from being tarnished. Or maybe the higher ups believed it is a wise thing to do,” Evina contemplated as she thought about the reason for the organization’s quick action.
“Well, I just called to ask how you are doing,” Cynthia stuttered, distracting Evina from her thoughts.
A smile crinkled Evina’s mouth as she sensed her colleague’s guilt. “She must have thought it was her fault that I am in this mess,” she thought as she recalled that it was their conversation that provoked Evina to bark at one of the Directors of Sapphire Company.
Still, Evina has no plans of blaming her or the Director. It was her fault that she was fired.
“I’m having a blast, Cynthia. I slept like a log last night, which I hadn’t done in ages. Now my house will thank me later after I gave it a good bath,” she chuckled, hoping it would cheer Cynthia up.
To her delight, Cynthia chortled with her, “I’m relieved. I’m sorry for dragging you into this, Evina.”
Evina was supposed to say, “No problem, I don’t mind.” But Cynthia proceeded on.
“To make it up with you, I wanted to help you get a job quickly. I know a vacant spot in a reputable company, and they were looking for an executive assistant as soon as possible. I think you’re more than capable for the job.”
Evina almost jumped up from her sofa with her eyes wide open. “You’re heaven-sent, Cynthia,” she squirmed as she felt like a load had been lifted off her chest.
She could just imagine taking a bath for hours without worrying that she wouldn’t finish it. Her table would be cleared from paper bills. And she would not see Mr. Hou on her door until the next year.
“I’m glad to be of help. Just send me your CV and I will send it to their Human Resource Department,” Cynthia added on.
In a fraction of a second, Evina opened her laptop and quickly sent her requested document to Cynthia. “There. Done it. Thanks, Cynthia! By the way, what company are we just talking about?”
“It’s The Elysian Inc.,” Cynthia replied with a proud smile on her face.

In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.
What do you think? Should Evina grab the opportunity? :) Let's see what will happen on the next chapter. Drop a rating or add this to your library if you like it. :) Take care of yourself! God bless! :*
Evina immediately searched for The Elysian Inc on the internet. She was familiar with the giant corporation, but she was unacquainted with the people behind the hierarchy. She must have vast knowledge of the company if she wants to be a part of it. “The Elysian Inc. offers a huge choice of software for many purposes. Their software is by far the most used operating system in the country. With an acquired revenue of $107.8 million, the dominating software industry remains The Elysian Inc. The company was founded in 1965 by founder Chairman Rafael Yang.” “Pretty impressive,” Evina nodded her head as she scrolled down the page. However, what caught her eye was the picture of the founder of the remarkable corporation. “I think he looks familiar,” She zoomed in to the picture of Chairman Yang, which was also in the webpage that she was looking at. He looks very attractive for a man his age. His aquiline nose was very prominent over his chiseled, angular fa
"You know how much I want you, Evina," Julian said in a husky voice, completing the frightening ambiance in the car. They were still in the parking lot of an abandoned building where Julian had brought Evina. Still in a daze, Evina froze as she couldn't believe what was just happening. It was only a few hours ago when he visited her in her unit, together with her older sister, Maria. He told her that he knew of a job opening in their company, which made her come with him. "L-let's go, Julian. They must have been waiting for us," she unconsciously blurted out, her eyes frantically searching for a sign that they were indeed in Julian's company. And he would not do what she was thinking that she would do. But the lights continued to flicker, casting shadows on Julian's threatening face. Evina pulled back until her whole body was stuck on the car door. "I've been waiting for so long," He drawled in between breaths. His eyes started drinking her bo
On the other side of the district, Gabriel was having a business meeting with the CEO of Astro Inc. “Congratulations, Mr. Yang. We appreciate your initiative to reach out to us first.” The CEO of Astro, Inc. bowed down to Gabriel as he shook his hand. “It is actually the Chairman’s aspiration to be in partnership with a world-class company such as Astro, Inc.” Gabriel stooped down to him as well. Gabriel just landed the deal. It is a project that The Elysian Inc. has been investing in for months. It put Gabriel in a good mood as he whistled while going to the parking lot at the basement of the Astro. Inc’s building. “The Chairman would be so proud of me,” he smiled to himself as he was nearing his car. Paul seemed to sense the positive result of the transaction. With a broad smile on his face, he opened the car door for him. As he did so, Gabriel’s eyes caught on the dent on its side. His face transformed into a frown as he remembered
Paul froze for a few seconds before he handed his gun to Gabriel. He must have been shocked at Gabriel’s sudden reaction. Gabriel was astonished, too, himself. It was not usual for him to direct a weapon at others. “But this situation was no ordinary incident either,” Gabriel muttered to himself as he was about to go out and defend the woman. As soon as Paul’s gun was on Gabriel’s hand, he immediately pivoted to bolt out of the car. However, when he turned back, he saw a slender arm reaching out to the open door. “Let me in!” It was the woman who was just waving hysterically at them a while ago. She didn’t even ask for Gabriel’s permission. But she immediately crawled inside, pushing Gabriel to the other side of the car. She immediately closed the door and flailed her hand in a swift motion to Paul as she demanded, “Go, go, go! Hurry!” Paul nodded as if he was sensing the urgency of the situation. He immediately stepped on the gas and left the
Evina silently waited in the car as the executive went out to do some errands. His driver or bodyguard stayed with her, making her feel safe somehow. They were in the parking lot of a department store, where the owner of the car asked to be dropped by. She wanted to forget about what happened. But she was too mortified to do so. The thought of Julian harassing her in an abandoned building lingered in her mind, suffocating the air out of her. Her hands frantically grabbed the nearest support she could find as she inhaled a lungful of air. “Are you all right, Miss Chen?” Paul turned towards her and offered her a bottle of water. Evina smiled at him and received the bottle. She then drank from it, hoping it would relieve her discomfort. As the drinking water penetrated through her cells, Evina started breathing normally. “Thank you. Maybe this will go away in a day or two,” she expressed her gratitude to him as she observed him. “He seemed a nice person,
Night has already set in outside the department store. The buyers were already leaving the establishment. Some had fun shopping and was laughing mirthfully as they went out. Others were walking fast as they hurried to catch up the train. In the parking lot, there were three people who were in the same car. All of them wanted to do different things after visiting the store. One wanted to leave the two and go on her own way. Another preferred for her to stay. And the last one was torn between the two. Usually, Gabriel didn’t mind other people’s plans. Why would he care when he already has a lot on his plate? However, this was a different matter for him. Even if she didn’t disclose any information about what happened, he knew an absurd incident occurred in the midst of Jeyong Town. “Get in. Do not make me say it thrice,” Gabriel commanded. Evina froze from her tracks. She already opened the car door and was about to step out. With a frown on her
Evina’s mouth dropped wide-open at Gabriel’s lucrative offer. “H-he was ordering me to stay with him? Is he kidding me?” She mused, her face showing a conflicting emotion of surprise, uneasiness and amusement. They were already travelling to Gabriel’s private estate, even without her permission yet. The roads seem to cooperate. There was no massive traffic along the way. In a few minutes, they were already near Gabriel’s location.“Why would I do that?” Evina asked, as if her answer could change the CEO’s mind. The wealthy man beside her snubbed her as if she was a ghost. Her eyebrows furrowed, puzzled by his actions towards her. Every so often, he would be concerned for her safety. Next, at a fraction of a second, he would be ruthlessly cold, just like she never existed.Evina leaned back on the car seat as she pondered about her dire situation. If she was honest, she wouldn't want to stay at her unit. He wa

“All right, don’t pick us. It’s your loss, not ours!" Evina gritted her teeth as she marched out of the Tech Studios parking lot.She has worked on this project for months. But the CEO of Tech Studios chose another company as their business partner. As far as she knows, the owner of that firm uses bribes to gain an edge above other tech firms. The sun outside was so scorching hot that one could fry an egg just by cracking it in the ground. But Evina didn't mind as she tramped on it."I hope all you greedy executives go bankrupt. Or better yet, you should rot in jail for the rest of your life!" she screamed at the top of her lungs before opening the door of her car with full force.*Screech!*
Gabriel’s eyes blinked rapidly as he gazed at his bride. His heart almost stopped beating. She looked exquisitely lovely in her dazzling white mermaid cut wedding gown, designed with pearls and choice gemstones. Her flaming red hair was neatly tucked under her veil.“You’re one lucky man, sir,” Paul whispered in his ear, making him nod in agreement. His eyes twinkled with an inner glow.He put his arms behind his back as he awaited his queen to come walking towards him in front of the aisle. As he did so, he drew in a deep breath. He could not imagine himself being wedded, and being much in love with his bride, like this. All his life he has dedicated himself to the company and for him, having a girlfriend, much so a wife, is an additional responsibility. That’s before he met Evina, the woman who made his heart live again. Now she was slowly walking towards where she was. Every step made his heart jump wi

William felt like he had slept for a long time. His body was sore and he felt a sharp pain in his stomach. His face grimaced as he tried to recall what happened. He remembered going to Chairman Yang even with a gunshot wound. He didn’t want to fail him again.Fortunately, he reached there on time. But he couldn’t recall what happened after that. Everything was already blurred up.While he was contemplating the situation, he heard voices talking around him.“You should’ve bought grapes. You know, Dad doesn’t like peaches.”“There are no grapes in the store. Besides, I remember him eating this before.”“He just ate it because you forced him to. Don’t you remember?”He opened his eyes, so he could see them clearly. It’s Maria and Evina, quarreling over a basket of fruits. He lifted his hand. But as he did so, he noticed that there was an IV set attached
Evina didn’t know how she made it back to the Chairman. Her lids were already swollen from crying. She was about to go to the Chapel of the hospital and pray all night for God’s extension of life for her father. But she wanted to say goodbye to the Chairman first, out of respect.“It seems that you’re finally reconciled with the Chairman, Dad. After twenty long years. And you still have a lot of time to spend your years together,” she mumbled to herself.“You can drink up all night, share your family stories under the night sky. Then we, your children, would scold you both and make you come to bed like you used to do to us when we were young,” Evina rattled on while laughing at her imagination like a crazy woman as she dragged her feet back to where she left the Chairman. To her surprise, she didn’t just see the Chairman with his guards. There were three other people with him.“Evina,” Mar
Feeling a little great, Evina returned to the ICU to check on her father’s state. Her face had a little radiance to it, unlike her appearance when she first came to the hospital. She had just donated blood to her devastated father. She has also encountered a man whom she didn’t know would help them. However, she couldn’t help but worry about her father. His state was still uncertain. She could only cry out to God for a miracle. “He still hasn’t met his grandchildren from me yet,” she heaved out a long sigh as she bit her lips. Her tired and aching feet dragged until she reached the ICU. To her surprise, she saw the Chairman still, sitting in one of the chairs. It was as if he was waiting for the door to open up, so he would be updated on her father’s status. Evina stopped for a moment and drew in a deep breath as she watched the Chairman. He looked like he was a good friend who was deeply concerned about his friend’s condition.
Evina’s pulse quickened as her eyes beheld him. It seemed that her blood rushed to every part of her muscles, making her blood pressure rise up at that moment. She recalled the incident that happened just a few hours ago. His brother attacked Gabriel and her in the parking lot. And he was also the reason why his father was on death’s bed right now.Evina couldn’t control herself. She rushed forward and almost slapped his face. If it weren’t for the nurses who stopped her, she must have hit him hard.“You and your shameless family. Why are you even here?” She couldn’t help but blurt out. He seemed to be working out something with the nurses when they entered the room.Evina was about to donate her blood to her father when she saw Julio, the least of all the people that she expected to see.“Hello again, Miss Chen. Don’t you want to know who saved your father’s life?” His l
Evina’s heart pumped in a frenzy as she traversed the traffic to the hospital where her father was admitted. She still hasn’t moved on from the chaotic scene at the parking lot. To be honest, she didn’t want to leave Gabriel behind. Even with his position, he could still go to jail. The son of Chairman Ming was badly beaten by him. She has already put him in prison. Fortunately for her, the women that he abused spoke up. And there were also other people who helped them, including Gabriel’s connection. But she also has an idea that with his influence, he could easily get out and go on a rampage, if he didn’t serve his penance. She just wasn’t aware that he would attempt to murder her, her father, and Gabriel. Still, there was a much-pressing issue, greater than all these. And that’s the life and death situation of her father. She could have easily gone there if it wasn’t for Julian’s antics. Fortunately, the taxi came to
