Liz Walters sighed sleepily. “It’s so comfortable.”
Squinting, she glanced at the unfamiliar roof that greeted her when she woke up. “When did my ceilings become so high?” She mumbled to herself.
She sat up. A frown pulled at her lips when she didn’t recognize her surroundings. “When did my room become this big?”
Pursing her lips, she ran a hand through her hair out of frustration until she spotted the glass of water sitting on the bedside table beside her. She was thirsty.
Smiling, she reached for it and quenched her thirst by gulping down the cool water. It was refreshing.
Everything was going just fine until she noticed her lack of clothes. “Where are my clothes?” She asked, looking down at herself under the bed sheets.
She was momentarily confused.
Placing the empty glass back on the bedside table, she searched the ground to find her dress scattered down there.
She got up, leaving the warmth of the bed and the bed sheets and perched down to pick her dress up when someone walked in on her.
Stunned, she froze for a second as she met gazes with a handsome man who was half naked.
Realization dawned on her that unlike him, she was fully naked, from head to toe.
She let out the loudest scream of her life while diving into the bed and hastily covering herself up with the bed sheets.
“What are you doing in my room?” She asked. Her voice raised an octave in panic. “Get out!”
“Don’t you remember anything from last night?” The handsome man arched a brow at her, slipping his hands into his pockets as he stared at her as though mesmerized by her reactions.
“Will you get out or not?” She reached for the first thing she could get her hands on. It was a vase which looked oddly familiar to her.
“Calm down, woman,” the man said, raising a defensive hand. “That’s the same vase you picked up to hit me last night.”
She glanced down at the vase in her hands. She could faintly remember holding it last night and almost throwing it at this handsome man not once but twice. “Last night… nothing happened last night.” Liz’s lips pulled down into a frown as she avoided his eyes.
Images of them both tossing around on the bed, on this same bed she was sitting on, crossed her mind. She bit her lower lip in embarrassment and clenched the bed sheets in her hands.
She immediately squeezed her eyes close and silently prayed for it all to be some kind of dream, hoping that when she’d open her eyes, she’d find herself back in her bedroom, in her apartment.
Fingers snapping caught her attention. She looked up to find the man standing two steps away from the bed, closer than he was before she’d closed her eyes. “It seemed like you remembered everything.” He said with a smirk.
The same smirk Liz remembered admiring last night. Unlike last night though, Liz felt angry seeing that smirk on his face.
“Stay back!” She pointed a finger at him to stop him from moving closer.
The man put his hands up in surrender and moved a few steps back. “Woah!”
“Who are you?” Liz narrowed her eyes down at him. She remembered almost everything that had happened in this room but she couldn’t recall getting here in this room with this man. “Why are we together?”
He looked past her shoulders and then, rubbed the back of his neck before answering, “Adrian Moore… we met at the bar last night.”
His name did ring a bell, Liz thought. “Then…? What happened?”
“You want me to tell you everything in details?” He arched an inquisitive eyebrow at her, surprised that she seemed keen to know everything from there on.
“Yeah,” she said with a shrug.
“Can we talk it out while having some brunch?” He suggested, glancing at the clock on the bedside table. “I’m starving.”
Liz opened her mouth to tell him off when her stomach rumbled. She grimaced and pressed a hand over her stomach, looking everywhere except at the handsome man whose eyes were fixed on her.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” Adrian nodded. “I’ll go get dressed in the bathroom. You can have the room.”
He didn’t wait for her response and walked into the bathroom, closing the door behind him.
Liz glared at the bathroom door for a minute. “What does he think of himself?” She muttered under her breath and hesitantly got out of bed to get dressed while gathering her thoughts about last night.
She winced in pain when she lifted her right leg to put on her underwear. She felt numb down there. “Shit!”
“Are you done? I need to use the bathroom!” Liz shouted, running her fingers through her messy hair to untangle the knots.
Adrian simply walked out and gestured at her to go in while buttoning up his shirt.
Liz couldn’t help rolling her eyes as she passed by him to enter the bathroom.
Before he could take another step forward, she shut the door behind him, making Adrian jump.
She still couldn’t believe that she’d been drunk enough to not even realize that she was losing her virginity to this man. “I’m such a fool!” She mumbled, staring at her disheveled self in the small mirror before rinsing her face.
Adrian Moore ran a hand through his hair in frustration. He couldn’t believe he’d slept with the woman he’d only met last night in the bar. He wanted to have a contractual relationship with her, not a real relationship of any sort. But not only did he slept with the woman, he also took her virginity.
He felt like a bastard.
When he’d woken up this morning, he was shocked to find himself spooning a naked Liz. He was so dazed he didn’t even notice that he had an awful headache.
Like a coward, he slipped out of bed and went to take a cold shower.
He wasn’t prepared to face her at all but knew he couldn’t possibly just leave her like this… not when she’d signed that contract and agreed to be his fake wife.
If only his parents and grandmother weren’t pressuring him to get married, he wouldn’t have gone to that bar, wouldn’t have met this woman, wouldn’t have made her sign that contract and wouldn’t have made such a mistake.
He slumped back down on the bed once he was fully dressed and closed his eyes. He took a moment to recollect last night’s events.
Why didn’t James question me last night when I’d told him to book us a hotel room? He thought. That was so unlike James.
Thinking of him, Adrian grabbed his phone and called him but he wasn’t picking up.
He tried again and again but James still wouldn’t pick up. What the hell? Adrian was getting pissed at his unresponsiveness.
James owed him some answers about last night and Adrian would stop at nothing to get those answers out of him. The only person he’d ever trusted after his family was James.
James was Adrian’s confidant, secretary, assistant and best-friend.
Furious, Adrian dialed the hotel room service and ordered some brunch.
It was only when he’d cut the phone call did he notice the black file and his wallet on the bedside table. James was here this morning. He’d seen him with Liz. That was the only way to explain how the contract and his wallet got here. He pursed his lips. The nerves of this guy!
He tried calling James once again and on the third ring, he picked up.
“You were here this morning, weren’t you?” Adrian demanded.
“I-I… yes –” James stuttered.
“Why didn’t you wake me up?”
“You were sleeping and uh – you looked tired and uh-uh –”
“So, you thought you’d just leave?”
“I don’t think it’d be okay to be in the room while you were both sleeping. Wouldn’t that make me a pervert?” James slowly asked as though he was carefully thinking about his choice of words.
“Since when did I give you the permission to question me? I’m the boss, not you.” Adrian snapped, sounding harsher than he’d meant to. He pressed his lips into a thin line and then said, “Look I’m sorry, listen –”
“Do I not have any right to question you? I’m your best-friend, not just your assistant.” James was angry at Adrian.
“I’m sorry,” Adrian apologized yet again. “I only want to know one thing.”
“What?”
“Why did you leave me at the hotel last night?” Adrian kept pacing around.
“You told me to book you a hotel room.”
“It was for Liz.”
“Yes but before I could take you outside, Madam Moore saw you and Liz together, drunk and holding hands in the hotel lobby.” James revealed.
“W-What?” Adrian felt like he’d been punched in the stomach. “My grandma saw me with her.”
“Yes and I had to take her away before you or Liz would blurt out anything about the contract.” James further explained.
“What did you tell her?” Adrian held his breath as he waited for James’ response.
“I told her that Liz is your girlfriend otherwise she might think that the news circulating on the media these days are true.”
“About me being a womanizer?” Adrian couldn’t help but snicker. “I just made that happen last night.”
“Those things can wait. The only thing that matters right now is that you and Liz have been dating for the past five months.” James stated.
“Is that what you told my grandma?”
James hummed in response and then said, “Look, I’ve got to go. Madam Moore asked you to bring Liz home this week. She wants to get to know her more.” He ended the call before Adrian could say anything else.
Adrian sighed in disbelief, staring at his phone screen for a moment. He’d thought he would have some time telling Liz a bit about everything and prepare her for when she would meet his family but now…
What did I just get myself into? Adrian face palmed himself.
A knock at the door pulled him out of his train of thoughts. “Room service,” a woman shouted.
“Come in,” Adrian shouted back and watched the woman slowly pushed a cart filled with food inside the room. “I can take it from here. Thank you,” he told the woman who nodded before leaving.
At the same time, a door unlocking caught his attention. It was Liz.
“Come,” he motioned at her to have a seat while he placed the food on the coffee table.
“I don’t have an appetite.” Liz shook her head but still took a seat. She needed an explanation.
She frowned when Adrian placed a black file on the coffee table along with the food. What was that? She could faintly remember seeing this last night but decided to stay quiet for now.
Adrian took a sip of his black coffee and hummed in delight.
Liz couldn’t help but make a face. Wasn’t that bitter? She always hated the taste of black coffee.
She paced around and busied herself with drying her hair with a towel when Adrian started eating. Her heart was racing. She was anxious to know what he had to say about last night.
Liz didn’t wait for him to finish his brunch. “Can we talk now?” She asked. Her patience was running thin.
She threw the towel onto the bed and sat back by the coffee table when he nodded.
Adrian started telling her everything about last night and Liz immediately regretted asking him about it. She wasn’t ready.
“Wait a second! Which contract are you talking about?” She was confused.
“The contract you signed with me… you agreed to be my fake wife and in return, I’ll give you a salary and a house but for these three months, you will stay with me at my place.” Adrian declared and placed the black file in front of her.
Reading the contract, Liz shook her head. She couldn’t believe this. A short laugh left her mouth. “You’re crazy if you think I’ll agree to this.” She stood up and began assembling her stuffs together to leave this place.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Adrian demanded, getting up. “You already signed the contract.” He stated as though that would force Liz to stay put.
“You think you did me a favor?” Liz asked, pissed at the handsome man standing in front of her. “I was drunk! You framed me into signing this contract.”
“I thought it was a done deal.” He said.
“What done deal…? My foot!” She exclaimed, stomping her foot.
“You can’t leave like that.” He stepped in front of the door to block her from walking out of the hotel room when she grabbed her luggage. “I won’t let you leave.”
Liz Walters gaped at him. “Who the hell are you to stop me?” “I’m Adrian Moore.” He said with a cunning smile. His eyes bored into hers, making her slightly anxious. Still, she remained composed and strong. She was seconds away from crumbling down at the mere thought of having lost her virginity to this man but she didn’t let her inner dilemma show on her face. “Look, you’re scaring me.” Liz held a finger at him. “You look like a decent guy and I don’t want to argue with you. Just let me leave and we’d pretend last night never happened.” Liz tried to put some sense into him. “How can you say that when everything that was not supposed to happen between us happened last night?” Adrian refuted, closing the short distance between them in three big steps. Liz was rendered speechless. She gulped. He was too close. She looked elsewhere as she took a step back. “Listen, I’m not qualified for this job.” Liz tried again, looking back at him. “If you get someone who’s not willing to do the
Adrian Moore closed his eyes for a moment, taking in a deep breath before releasing it. “Listen, that’s a form of courtesy for when I’ll introduce you to some of my business partners, nothing else.” Liz thought about it for a moment and then, nodded. “Okay, fine.” He exhaled, not realizing that he’d been holding his breath. “Are we good with the contract or is there anything you’d like to add in it?” “You need to ask for my permission first before touching me.” Liz declared, raising her chin. “And if you touch me without my permission, I can slap you on the face… whether or not we’re in front of people, I don’t care.” She added. “If you agree then, okay otherwise –” “I agree,” Adrian interrupted, accepting her condition. “I’ll ask James to add this and then, I’ll give you a copy of the contract.” “Okay.” “Last night, my grandma saw us together in the hotel lobby, blabbering drunkenly.” He watched as Liz’s eyes widened in surprise. “James told her that you’re my girlfriend and tha
Adrian Moore noticed a little smear of peanut butter at the side of her mouth. Nodding, he pointed at his cheek, “You’ve made a little mess.” And then, pointed at her face from across the room. “Oh,” Liz got herself a napkin and pressed it against her lips. Smiling cheekily, she asked, “Is it okay now?” Adrian shook his head. “It’s right there,” he pointed at his right cheek. Since they were sitting facing each other, Liz thought he meant her left cheek so she dabbed her left cheek to clean it up but then, Adrian shook his head once again, so, she pulled the napkin away from her face. Confused, Liz stopped munching with her hand hanging mid-air when Adrian got up and closed the short distance between them. She watched him lean down until his face would be almost leveled with hers and held her wrist. Forcing the food in her mouth down her throat, she locked gazes with him. He guided her hand towards her right cheek. Liz felt awkward with him being so close to her face when there w
Instead of backing away and holding his hands up, palms out to surrender, a grin tugged at Adrian's lips. “I won’t go shopping with you for so-called high class dresses. I’m fine with my clothes.” She crossed her arms over her chest, keeping her mouth closed, not daring to deny it. Her quivering lips and out-thrust chin looked more adorable than determined. Adorable… like everything else about Liz Walters. She was gorgeous, funny, smart… and oh, so damn stubborn. He couldn’t resist teasing her a bit more. “With the clothes you’ve got on, my mom would never accept you as my wife.” Fire snapped in her eyes. “I don’t need her to accept me as your wife. I’m only here to be your fake wife, not someone’s fake daughter-in-law!” “But –” “No buts!” “Listen to me. We’ll have to pretend to be a real couple in front of them, especially in front of my mom. For that you’ll have to look like the perfect woman she’d want to see by my side and you should start with your first impression.” “What’
Liz Walters frowned in confusion. “My money, what money…? I’ve got nothing. Don’t you know?” She asked him through gritted teeth. “And don’t call me sweetheart,” she whispered angrily. “I have a name.” “Chill, woman!” He held her shoulders and lowered his face to her level, forcing her to meet his eyes. “I’ll deduct it from your salary.” “My salary…? How much will all of this cost?” She pursed her lips in disapprovement, glancing at the counter filled with clothes with fearful eyes before meeting his eyes back again. “Not much,” Adrian said slowly as though thinking about his choice of words. “Come on, she’s packing the clothes. We can get going now.” Shaking her head tiredly, she followed behind him. Leaning against the counter and looking at her joining him, he asked the lady, “Did you get the tops?” “Yes, Mr. Moore.” The lady replied politely as she packed the remaining clothes. It was a lot but she was fast. “This dress… didn’t I tell you to get the two of them,” he exclaime
Jocelyn’s face went pale. She looked at Adrian before looking back at Liz. The latter was satisfied seeing her loss of confidence. Poor woman! She totally wasn’t expecting that, Liz thought. She forced a sweet smile on her face as she squeezed her fingers around Adrian’s making him grit his teeth together. He bit back a cry of pain. Jocelyn glared at their conjoined fingers. If her eyes were laser beams, their hands would have been burnt to ashes within seconds. “Does Mrs. Moore know about this…?” She dared question Adrian as though she was superior to him and he was obliged to answer her. “About her…?” She sneered, looking down at Liz with one side of her lips curled up. “She’ll know soon… that is if someone doesn’t already go spill the beans before I tell her.” Adrian’s tone of voice changed to a condescending one. Liz sucked in her lower lip to hide the grin tugging at her lips. “Huh,” Jocelyn rolled her eyes at him. “Do you think I’m a telltale?” “Are you not?” He asked chal
Liz Walters left them outside, heading straight to her room to call it a night but then, Adrian hollered out to her, sounding very close to her bedroom door. “What?” She huffed but still went to open the door for him. Instead of seeing Adrian‘s face, a huge mountain of piled up bags greeted her. She opened her mouth to speak but before she could utter anything, it moved – the mountain of bags – moved. She was forced to step to the side, letting him walk in. How the hell was he carrying all those stuffs altogether? “No –” she cried out. Not on the bed! She wanted to say but the words died down in her throat when she saw all of it tumbling down on her bed. No! She pouted. Where will she sleep? She was exhausted and to think that she would have to sort out those clothes before sleeping made her just want to cry. “Not the bed,” her mouth turned down. “The sooner you arrange those clothes in your closet and throw out whatever needs to be thrown away, the better it’ll be for the both o
Adrian Moore gave her an once-over and then, slowly shook his head from side to side. “Not really.” “What do we do then?” Liz looked at the front door and then, looked back at Adrian. “Why don’t you hide in my bedroom?” He suggested, already pushing her down the hallway, opposite to where her room was. He didn’t even wait for her response. Liz had no other choice but to run inside his bedroom, looking for a good hiding spot. Once she’d disappeared out of sight, Adrian rushed to open the front door. Like he’d predicted, it was indeed his grandma. “Grandma,” he smiled at the old woman whose smile faded away. She appeared frustrated and slightly pissed. “Did you just get up? Why weren’t you opening the door for me? What are you hiding like that? Is there anything you don’t want me to see? Or someone…” She drawled out, meeting Adrian’s gaze. Adrian’s heart dropped to his stomach. “Hiding…? Why would I hide anything from you?” “I don’t know. You tell me,” Mrs. Moore tilted her chin a
Liz Walters stared at him for a minute. “I believe you, I… was just mad when I learnt that you didn’t care to tell me about that solution you’d come up with,” she managed. “So you’re really here to stay?”“For good… the only travelling I intend to do is to visit my family back home and that too, with you and our babies tagging along with me.”Liz found herself smiling at his words.Adrian has a brother? The thought struck her mind. “Wait, you have a brother?”He met her eyes and then nodded. “Asher is my little brother. He just graduated college and has obtained a high level of knowledge and skill when it comes to business and finance. I believe he’d take good care of the company.”“He definitely will. After all he’s the brother of Adrian Moore.” She said with pride.Adrian slowly shook his head at her. “Don’t be so proud of me. Last time, you said I’d be back in no time after solving that issue with the investors. It took me a week to sort it out. The wait damn near killed me.”“If y
Adrian Moore shoved his hands into his pockets and bounced his shoulders up and down a little. The night was drawing in, so, it was chilly and damp. “I guess I’ll see you guys soon.”Anna smiled at her brother. “I’ll see you. Take good care of my sister-in-law.” She warned him with her eyes narrowed down into slits. “Otherwise…” She left that hanging for her brother to imagine the pretty images by himself.Adrian raised his hands up in surrender. “I get it! There’s no need for you to get so threatening.”“Yeah, I really hope I won’t have to get physical with you the next time I see you. Liz has my number so be careful!” She said with a nonchalant shrug.Adrian simply rolled his eyes at his sister.“This is what I get to deal with every day.” James quietly complained as he gave Adrian a nudge.“Did you say something?” Anna asked James with a murderous glare.James quickly shook his head from side to side. “I said nothing!”“Good! No one wants to hear your ugly voice.” Anna crossed her
Adrian Moore placed his hand on their office door, ready to push it wide open when James held his shoulder to stop him.“Wait! If we walk in like that, it would be a sign of disrespect.” James warned him.“But I want to have this problem solved as soon as possible.” Adrian turned to look at him with an impatient look on his face.“I know but,” James gave him a sympathetic look. Before they could start an argument of their own, the door was swung open from the inside and standing right in front of them, was one of the investors, Mr. Williams.“Excuse me; can I help you with something?” The old man gave him a long, cold unfriendly stare.“Is it really necessary to remind you why we’re here? Well, in case you forgot our meeting yesterday…” Adrian trailed off when James threw him a pointed look.‘What?’ Adrian pursed his lips at him.‘We’re here to solve the issue, not to aggravate the situation.’ James made sure he got his words across his moody and snappy best-friend – the same best-fri
Liz Walters watched as her grandpa nodded his head, a knowing look on his face. She narrowed her eyes a trifle at him and nudge him with her elbow, “Grandpa?”Mr. Walters snapped out of his reverie and turned to look at Liz. “Yes…”“Is there anything you aren’t telling me?” She asked him, her frown deepening.“Actually, I’ve had a talk with Adrian about this matter.” The old man revealed after some hesitation as though he wasn’t so sure whether he should be telling her about this or not. “Grandpa, I told you not to discuss this with him –”He held his right hand up to stop her. “I know but I had to talk to him. And we came up with a solution.” He said calmly and reassuringly.“Solution…? What is it?” She asked as she folded her arms across her chest. He opened his mouth to tell her about it when he decided otherwise. “I think it would be better if Adrian tells you about it himself.”“Why won’t you tell me?” Liz was annoyed and a bit frustrated that her own grandpa was keeping stuffs
Adrian Moore walked through his office, navigating cubicles, stopping here and there to exchange a word of encouragement and sometimes a laugh, with his employees. By now, everyone at the company learnt about the mishap with the investors.Unlike his father, none of his employees blamed him for it. They believed it was entirely the investors’ fault for overreacting. His company, the same company his father had founded on dollar bills and a dream, was on the cusp of a huge deal – the same deal he’d messed up – well those investors messed up because of their weird problem with video conference calls. After securing the rights to develop the resort on Lake Washington in a battle with Dwayne Jameson, an established developer, that had, at times, been brutal, they were waiting for the approval of the environmental engineer’s plan.More importantly, they were waiting for the investors to agree to fund the plan. That was the last thing left to do. If only Adrian hadn’t found out that they wo
Liz Walters’s mood had definitely lifted once Adrian had showed her around his house. “You should be thankful that bitch left.” She mumbled under her breath.“Woah, chill out on the crude words,” Adrian held out a hand at her as though to shush her. “Our babies are listening to you.”Liz simply rolled her eyes at him.“You look exhausted.” His eyebrows furrowed as he studied her face.“Yeah,” she said, her voice low, toneless.“I found the mole at work. It’s the guy from my team who prints our documents and everything. Aaron was supposed to be the most trustworthy person in my department. I gave him the responsibility of taking care of our confidential papers but…” she trailed off, deep in thought.“But you managed to save your first project from getting sabotaged.” He pointed out. “I’ve said this to you before and I’ll say it again. You’re too good at your job to let anyone become an obstruction for you,” he said.Liz’s eyes lit up in admiration and contentment as she smiled at the m
Adrian Moore stood up in surprise. He didn’t want to ignore Liz but he was too shocked to say anything. “What are you doing in my house? How did you get inside?” He asked the woman who’d frozen in place like a deer caught in headlights.“She’s at your place? What is she doing over there, Adrian?” Liz questioned him, sounding suspicious all of a sudden and… hurt.Fuck no!He was torn in between questioning Jocelyn and answering Liz’s questions. What the fuck did he get himself caught into?“Wait a second, Liz.” Adrian held out a finger as he looked at Jocelyn, seemingly troubled.“What is she doing at your place, Adrian?” Liz demanded.“Baby, listen to me,” he turned his back on Jocelyn to have some privacy. “Do you trust me?”“Adrian –”“Liz, do you trust me?” He asked with more urgency. There was a moment of silence before Liz whispered, “Yes, I do.”“Let me handle this thing,” he said disdainfully as he threw Jocelyn a disgusted look. “– then, I’ll call you back.”“Promise…?” Liz as
Adrian Moore sensed rather than saw his father come into his office. He felt a tension, a kind of palpability, as he heard the door close quietly beside him and he just knew it was him. He didn’t turn around. He continued swirling his pen around in his fingers as he read through the file he had been reading except that he wasn’t reading it no more.He glanced over briefly to see where his father was and saw him standing right in front of his table, one hand in his pocket while the other one was fisted tightly.“Busy…?” He asked.“Yeah…” He hadn’t intended to sound so gruff, but he knew he had. It wasn’t really because of his father. It was the worrying thoughts running through his mind. He still hasn’t decided on a way to negotiate with those investors and knowing his father, he wouldn’t take long before asking him about it. He wouldn’t be surprised if he jumped straight to the point. His father looked at him, his face filled with suppressed anger. “What have you thought? I need those
Adrian Moore pulled the car right in front of Liz’s house and shut off the engine. He thought it would be best if Liz would stay at her grandparents’ house while he was away. As long as she wasn’t all by herself at their house and staying here with her grandparents, he would be less worried about her and their babies. It was already half past six and he had to catch his flight to New York at exactly eight o’clock. He didn’t think much about having to cover the two hours journey to the airport in one hour and a half. As long as he was able to spend some more time with Liz, he didn’t mind that at all.Turning to his right, he looked at Liz.She was nervously fidgeting with her fingers until he’d had her gazes locked with his. They found themselves staring at one another for a moment.Adrian wished time would stop right there just so he could stay here with her forever but…“I’ll see you soon,” one corner of his mouth fluttered up.“Don’t take too long,” she teased, leaning in to give hi
