“The operation is successful.” The patient’s relatives sighed in relief as they cried in happiness. My heart feels warm every time I save lives. I can feel the joy radiating from them. “We will transfer him to the ICU in an hour. You may visit him once he regains consciousness.” I informed them.
“Thank you, Dr. Lewis. We owe you our son’s life. Thank you so much.” The patient’s mother said with full of gratitude. I want to tell her that I was just a tool in saving his son’s life, but it’s actually our God’s doing. Miracle does happen every day.
I flashed a warm smile to all of them before going back to the operating room. I remind the resident doctors to monitor the patient thoroughly to check possible changes in his condition.
I collected my phone and my white coat as I headed back to my office. I will make my rounds in fifteen minutes, and I am starving. I am craving spicy food. I hope Maxwell ordered something for me.
When I entered my office, a smell of ramyeon lingered in my nose, and I couldn't help but get excited. Maxwell smiled at my reaction. “I knew you would like it.” He stated.
“You know me well. Thank you! I love ramyoen!” I get the chopsticks and start eating them. I need to fill in my stomach in fifteen minutes. Maxwell put a few dumplings on my ramyeon, and my eyes twinkled in happiness.
“Is the CEO bothering you?” Maxwell suddenly asked while preparing a cup of coffee.
I shake my head while eating. “No,” I answered.
“I’m glad to hear it.” It’s been two days since he became the new CEO, and I’ve never seen him since then. He probably realized that he could not do whatever he wanted just because he was the CEO. “Tomorrow is the weekend. Are we going to visit Noah?”
“Probably we will visit him next weekend. I’m still worried about Levi’s return. He might be checking information about me for the past six years.”
Maxwell nods in approval. “Let’s just call him once we get home to inform him and mom.” He said, and I agreed.
I finished a bowl of ramyeon, and I hurriedly made my rounds with other resident doctors. The emergency room called me exactly right after my rounds because of a motorcycle accident. The driver was not wearing a helmet, so I immediately requested a CT scan and MRI to check his head. It seems that the patient has severe TBI or Traumatic Brain Injury. He was bleeding heavily and unconscious.
We execute an emergency operation to save his life. We removed clotted blood or hematomas, and we also repaired his skull fractures. It took us a few hours to stop the bleeding. I met his parents outside the operating room and explained the details in the simplest way I could.
Severe TBI is not a joke. The patient may require rehabilitation because I’m afraid it affects his motor skills to do day-to-day work. His parents seem devastated by the news, but I assure them that the operation was successful. We just have to wait for the patient to wake up.
They understood the situation and thanked me over and over again for saving the patient’s life. I hope he recovers soon.
A few minutes have passed, and another emergency operation came in. Accidents are usually at night these days. I wonder what they were doing not to get hurt, or it was their fate.
“Let’s go home, Zombie Noelle.” Maxwell snatched my bag as he teased me. We were walking in the hallway when we saw the other two neurosurgeons that looked like a corpse. They were busy the whole night too. I wonder if they got a chance to eat.
“They look worse than I am,” I said as we passed them. Maxwell chuckled at my remarks. “You don’t look tired,” I commented.
“I did not have surgery last night. I just monitored the babies in the pediatric ward.” He explained.
“Good for you,” I commented as I massaged my nape. “I never thought you love babies and children that much that you even chose to be a pediatric surgeon.”
“It all started with Noah. He’s the reason why I decided to dedicate my life to babies and children.” I smiled at him. It warms my heart every time he says how he loves Noah.
“By the way, have you talked to your manager about your return?” He received a call from his former manager regarding his comeback in the music industry. He had stopped performing when we entered medical school.
He groaned in frustration. “I don’t think I can make it. I still love singing, but my hands are full now. I cannot be a singer and a surgeon at the same time.”
“Then just tell him your decision.”
“I will.” We were about to exit the hospital when a bouquet of white tulips suddenly appeared in front of me. I instantly halt on my track as I look at the man holding the flowers.
I looked at him in confusion. “What are you doing?” I asked Levi as he uncomfortably looked at me. He must be feeling awkward around the people looking at us.
“I’m…” He looks away as he gulps. His ears are red, and he’s sweating. “I’m sorry, Noelle.” He finally said, and I could not help but chuckle.
“For what?” I asked as I looked at Maxwell, who shook his head in annoyance.
“I’m sorry for everything.” I sigh as he says those words while looking intently into my eyes. He really means it, but I hope words can change everything in just a snap of a finger. He has no idea what he has done.
“Please stop wasting your time and effort, sir. We are in the hospital. You cannot just do what you please.” I grab Maxwell’s hand and drag him out of the hospital.
“I’m not gonna lose to Maxwell,” Levi said with greeted teeth as he looked at our hands.
“You already lose the game the moment you choose your woman, sir,” I said before leaving him behind.
Maxwell was chuckling when he suddenly raised our hands, clasping them together. “I’m not gonna lose to you too, Levi!” He shouted as he laughed.
I laughed at him. “You are such a tease.”
“He deserved it for challenging me.” He said as he smirked.
The next day, Maxwell and I received a memo about changing our work schedule and day off. It was signed by none other than the great CEO.
“It has already begun,” Maxwell said as he stared at the memo.
“What?” I asked as I tried to suppress my anger.
“The war has already started, but we are not going to lose, Noelle.” He said, and it eased my mind somehow.
N O E L L E“Is he the last patient?” I asked the nurse as the patient left the room. I was making a clinical diagnosis since I was back on the day shift. Maxwell remained in the night shift, and it’s been a week since the start of our new schedule.“Yes, Dr. Lewis.” She answered, so I started collecting my things to go back to my office to continue my research of a rare brain illness.I was about to open the door when it suddenly opened, and an unwanted creature entered the room. I rolled my eyes in annoyance as I heaved a deep sigh. The nurse was shocked to see him. “How’s my fiancée?” He asked bluntly with a smirk.“I am not your fianceé, sir. Don’t make such a false claim. Do you need something from me?” I asked while faking a smile. I always remind myself that he’s the boss, so I can’t act recklessly. I might lose my job in an instant.
N O E L L EThe chairman looks serious and mad. I was standing in front of him for about five minutes now, but he doesn't say anything yet. I smiled at him, but he did not even respond to it.What the hell is wrong with him?“I convinced my son to stop bothering you.” My smile widened in happiness. “But he refused to do so.” And just like that, my smile vanished. “I know what you’ve been through because of him; that is why I am doing what I can to stop him.”“Thank you, chairman.”“However, you know my son than I do. He doesn’t want to stop pursuing you. He has made his mind, and that’s it.” I sighed as a sign of frustration. “I can’t believe he bought this hospital just to take you back.” He said as he shook his head. “I’ve never seen him this serious.”“I am also serious in walking away from his life, cha
N O E L L ELevi looks around the area and then looks at me in confusion. I rejected his offer to treat me to a meal, but he still followed me here.“The hospital cafeteria looks classy. It’s like we are in a hotel.” He commented. I eat my food in silence as he talks. “They are serving delectable foods too.”“You better check all the areas in the hospital, Mr. CEO. You look like a lost kid.” I suggested. “You, of all people, should know everything in the hospital. Instead of wasting your time on me, why don’t you start familiarizing yourself with the process of the hospital?” I lectured him, and he looked amazed. “What?”“You have matured a lot. The Noelle I know several years back would laugh and tease me for not doing my job properly.” He said as he chuckled.“I am acting to my age, sir. You are four years older than me, yet you act like a s
N O E L L E“I have some errands to do this week. Can you take Noah with you?” I sighed in relief. I was afraid that it was something bad.“Of course, mom. Maxwell and I can take care of him. Don’t worry about us.” Maxwell can look after him in the day while I’m at the hospital, and then I will take care of him at night while Max is in the hospital. Our new schedule is convenient in this kind of situation.“Thank you, Noelle. He would love to come with you.” She said while smiling.“I’m sure of it,” I said while chuckling. We spent the weekend spending every minute of it with Noah. We went to the nearest park to hang out and enjoy nature. We went to his favorite fast-food restaurant and ordered his favorite food. I told him informative yet funny stories before going to bed.Maxwell and I enjoyed spending time with him, and we were thrilled to take him with us.
N O E L L ENine years ago…Maxwell was telling me about his upcoming album and the songs he collaborated with a famous band when an unfamiliar guy approached us. “Good afternoon, Miss Lewis.” He greets in a very formal way. He is wearing a coat and tie. I gulped as I remember someone like him approached me a year ago.“My name is Allen. The CEO wants to talk to you.” My eyes widen in shock the moment I hear the word CEO. Shit! Holy cow! Is this for real!? “He’s outside, Miss Lewis.” What is he doing here!? Shit. I get nervous all of a sudden. What should I do?!“We are still eating.” I stun when Maxwell speaks. I divert my attention to him, and I swallow the lump in my throat as I see him looking intently at Allen. “Tell your boss to wait.” He says firmly.“I’m sorry, but I can’t do that, Mister Hughes.” Maxwell and I get shoc
N O E L L E“Mommy! Can we eat dinner outside? I want to go to the mall.” It’s the weekend, and Noah is still with us. He can’t go home to his grandma yet since mom has to take care of their business longer than she expected.I look at Maxwell to ask for permission, and he nods as he smiles. “Let’s watch a movie too.” Maxwell declared, and Noah shouted in happiness. In 30 minutes, we are all set to go. Maxwell is carrying Noah’s bag. I always bring extra clothes for Noah, water, a first aid kit just in case of emergency, a towel, baby wipes, and milk. Yep, he sometimes still asks for milk.“What are we going to watch, daddy?” Noah asked while his dad was helping him to get off the car.“Let’s check, but whatever you would like to watch, son.” He answered, and Noah chirped in glee.We went straight to a restaurant and ate our lunch. I was feeding No
N O E L L E“W-Welcome back, Doctor Roberts.” I greeted him as he passed beside me, his arm brushing mine intentionally. I gulped as I felt disgusted. His eyes travelled my body from head to toe.He is already 50 years old and married. He is a good surgeon and department head. I respect him, but hell, he’s a horny doctor.I can see the other neurosurgeons eyeing me with pity. They know what this shitty old man is doing to me, but they can’t report it because Doctor Roberts is friends with the previous CEO.A few months ago, Doctor Roberts started making his dirty moves on me, which I avoided successfully, but his awful effect on me sucks. He tried to touch my legs, breast, and ass, but I did ways to stop him from doing it.“Thank you for welcoming me.” He said. Maxwell knew what had happened before and convinced me to report him, but I did not do it since he was our department head.I hope
N O E L L E“W-What did you just say?!” Levi exclaimed. He got furious instantly after hearing my reason.I gulped as I walked over to him. “I’ve been experiencing sexual assault these past few months in this hospital,” I said.Levi did not utter a single word for a few minutes while looking intently into my face. It looks like he is trying to process what I just said. I know it’s not that easy to accept since it is a serious crime.I studied his expression, and a question popped into my head. I wonder how we will react once he discovers what happened to me almost seven years ago. I wonder what he will say. I wonder what he will do about it.“Are you alright? Did you hear what I say?” I asked.“W-Who? Who did it to you!?” He shouted, and his voice filled the whole room. I looked at him worriedly as his expressions changed. His eyes suddenly darkened, and the veins o
