Together stepped out of the restaurant, into the street and towards the park where their car parked, their hands entwined in each other’s and each step was a slow and steady process.

The chilly wind of the night blew, and Jasmin felt chills even in her reefer jacket. She’s still not accustomed to the weather. The chilly night didn’t affect Cainan, and if it did, he did little to show it.

As they approached the park, they saw a few young boys around eight to ten years of age running around, playing with snowballs and throwing them at each other. One of the little boys threw a snowball at another, but his aim was higher and it flew past him, smashing against Jasmin’s face and the surprise sent her off her feet.

With her eyes closed, she gave herself three seconds for her body to hit the cold ground, but gravity stood still even after three seconds passed. She finally cracked an eye open and through her snowed covered glass, sh

Cainan grunted as he stepped into the bedroom and shut the door. “I’m so sick of the Abayomis and their never-ending Christmas tradition! Sucks that my mother has also joined their madness.” Jasmin was certain that his outburst was for not being able to spend the evening in bed with his laptop and her beside him, as he had planned. He wasn’t so inclined to the recent change of plans, and it was obvious. She chuckled, “It might be more exciting than you expect.” She tried to cheer him on. He growled dramatically, “You’re the only reason it’s fun.” “Aww, I’m flattered. We should do as Ada said, shower and go downstairs,” she said as she hung the reefer jacket on the hanger close to the door, tossed her purse onto the bed and, upon settling into it, she pulled off her shoes. She undid her hair from the bun it was in and it fell over her shoulder before rising to her feet. Cainan came up behind her and wrapped his warm arms

Cainan woke Jasmin up at the early hours of the morning with a soft “Merry Christmas, sweetheart” in her ears before kissing her neck. They had gone to bed at almost midnight last night and so her eyes stung as she peeled them open at his words and when she asked him what time it was; he replied four a.m. She shifted around to face him with her eyes dimmed and she cupped his face in her hands, asking him why he was even awake. He told her he had woken up to ease himself and lost his sleep afterwards and when she inquired if he wanted to be cuddled, he eagerly nodded. She wrapped her small arms around him, and kissed his hair, mumbling “Merry Christmas, Cainan,” to him in return and not so long after, her eyes closed. When they opened again, it was seven a.m. and Cainan was already awake. She asked if he had any sleep and he said yes, adding that her arms around him helped a lot and thanked her with a kiss on her forehe

Coming downstairs, they realised every other member of the family was already present standing beside the Christmas tree glowing beautifully with the lights and that they were the latecomers as always. Jasmin was in her grey pyjamas and Cainan was in black trousers and a sweater. She raised a brow when he threw on the sweater moments ago, but his eyes told her not to say a word. Cainan resented Daniel’s idea of going for a bigger tree two days ago, but looking at it now, with everyone gathered around it, it was just the right size for the family. Their gifts, which they had submitted last night to the maids before going to bed, were now wrapped and lying at the foot of the tree. Lisa was the most excited of them all and though she tried to control it, she could only do so much. Xavier had an unreadable look on his face while he held onto Lisa’s hand, and it wasn’t clear if he was holding to support her or to tame her excitement.&n

Lisa was setting up lunch at the dining table when Jasmin stepped in and requested to help, but Lisa insisted she was good and had it all under control. Jasmin, regardless, would not take Lisa’s usual advice to do nothing, and she stepped into the kitchen with her. “There are still a few things to be set, I can tell.” Lisa dropped the kettle from the cooker and poured the hot water into a glass jog sitting on the tray on the kitchen island. “Well, the maids are on break and I told mom I could handle it. You helping me wouldn’t be me handling it now, will it?” once emptied, she returned the kettle to the already turned off cooker. “Sometimes we need a little help.” Jasmin insisted, and Lisa turned to her. “Okay,” Lisa brought out the tea bags and set them on the tray beside the jug, “please take this to the dining table, be careful.” She picked up the tray and handed it over to her. Throughout the hours of the day, Lisa’s words echoed in her head. Her words had sent her on a soul searching journey trying to figure out when exactly it was she gave her heart to Cainan? Her job was to steal his heart. It couldn’t be the other way around. Sadly, things didn’t always happen the way people hoped, but this was no excuse. “Something on your mind?” She pulled out of her thoughts and saw Cainan's concerned eyes on her. This had to be the reason. His concern must have been the reason she handed her heart to him without considering it. Something was on her mind and it was the thought of how fucked up she now was. “Why did you ask?” “You were quiet throughout breakfast and lunch and you’ve been rather cold towards me. Did I do something wrong?” Yes, you did. You cared more than you should have. “No, just the pregnancy hormones as always.” She lied to him and she fe

“Since he’s so fucking perfect, why don’t you just go right ahead and date him then?!” Xavier exploded from the room and his voice was loud enough that Jasmin heard it in the hallway while she approached her door. She froze on her step as Xavier stormed out of the room and slammed the door shut, marching down the hallway that leads to where she was. She tried to move, but her feet glued to the spot and all she did was watch him. He brushed past her with a force that caused her to stumble back a few steps. She was in her slip-on for the cinema date and so her legs fought to keep her standing. After coming out victorious in her fight for balance, her gaze levitated to see the one responsible for her almost unfortunate fate. She stepped aside, “You should watch where you’re going.” She didn’t sound as annoyed as she was, and she was okay with that. “You should also learn to get out of the way, Jazz.”

A month later. Jasmin currently sat at Anita’s office, getting a debriefing on the profit and loss so far for January. We carried the monthly financial summary out a few days before the month ended so that those who were to be settled with their wages could get them from now until the last day of the month. Although calculating the losses and the gains was complex and complicated for Jasmin, it was easy for Anita and she did it with less stress. The two have been at it for the past two hours, and Jasmin’s head was slowly aching. “Sales for this month was lower than that of November and December, but according to Hunter Obi, the analysis expert, businesses providing services in the city are experiencing a sort of setback since it is the beginning of the year. Hopefully, these numbers will go up in the upcoming months.” Anita was pointing out the calculations on the worksheets to Jasmin, but Jasmin’s head was too stressed out to grasp it.

Ten minutes, however, became thirty minutes as she got stuck in traffic on her way over to his office. She got one of his favourite, rice and beans and catfish stew, and though she was happy at first, the traffic made her a little unhappy. She pulled out her phone and texted him, “Stuck in traffic but I will soon be with you.” There was no response in the next two minutes that followed, and she slipped her phone into her purse. After another ten minutes, she finally arrived at the Inferno Group of Company’s headquarters. She paid the driver and got down, holding onto the fancy takeaway bag which had his food in it. She paid the driver before hurrying her feet towards the building. She had been here before but there was still an edginess in her as she acknowledged the massive building she was about to step into and she told herself the man she was in a relationship with owned it. Knowing he came from nothing and yet made a name f

A few days later, Jasmin was holding onto a bunch of lily flowers and she wore a long silver gown that littered with every move she made. Lisa told her it was going to give her the best look two days ago, and she believed. Cainan was in a black tux and red bow tie and sat in his wheelchair, awaiting her arrival at the altar. He was taking Rogue’s advice and also grooming a beard and a few stubbles were on his face. Jasmin told Cainan she wanted to be married to him a few days ago at the hospital and despite being confined in bed, Cainan moved to plan for the wedding, which would be a small one with only family and friends. After they released him from the hospital, the doctor gave strict instructions that he made use of the wheelchair to help heal and restore him to his full strength before walking and so he had done in these past days while planning the wedding. The stillness within and without was the first thing Cainan took notice of as he regained consciousness and soon after, his lashes lifted and he beheld a blurry shadow pacing around not so far away. What a very weird dream he had had, being chased around with Jasmin and then shot and stabbed. He made out the white painted walls, ceiling and blue curtains hanging on the window through his dimmed vision and his head did a mental recall of the event that might have led to this, but came up short. The clearer his vision became, the harder his head ached, and he shut his eyes as the pain in his head grew worse. “Shit!” he cussed and groaned loudly. How the hell did he end up here? “Cainan,” he heard Ada’s voice snapping him out of his thoughts, and a moment later she took his hand in hers. “Oh, thank goodness you’re finally awake.” She breathed in relief and took her seat

Dennis dragged Jasmin out of the house and into her car before forcing her to drive them away from the house. They drove past a few security points and each time, Jasmin played it cool and smiled her way through each line of questioning they had for her. She obeyed Dennis and did nothing that would spook suspicion for the safety of her unborn child even though she couldn’t imagine going back to the nightmare of a life she once had, filled with fear, abuse, and pain. “Where are the rest of the team?” she asked, a little curious as they left the last checkpoint. Dennis did nothing without his team, which comprised three other wealth exchangers, and Jasmin sensed something was up with their absence. “Dead.” He flatly replied, his eyes on the road. “I lost them a few days ago, during a heist.” Her eyes dropped. “I’m sorry.” She mumbled quietly, but she was not surprised. The life they lived was a dangerous one, which was why she wanted to leav

And what he saw pleased him. "That's my girl, so obedient." he cooed. "Your good heart never leads you astray. Now bring out your phone and call your lover boy. You need to make sure that your words are believable because Lisa isn't out of the woods yet." Afraid, angry and defeated, she pulled out her phone from her purse on the couch and dialled Cainan's number. After the third dial, with no answer from Cainan, she lowered the phone from her ear, mumbling. "He's not answering, usually he answers..." The words were barely out of her mouth when the doorbell went

Somehow, Dennis, an intruder, had found his way in and now sat on Lisa's adjustable chair at the corner of the living room in black hood and trousers, and an evil smirk at the side of his lips like he owned the place.A million questions ran through Jasmin's head as she speechlessly stared at him. What did he want? How did he find her?Where's Lisa? What did he do to her?Despite the question running through her head, all she could utter became his name."Dennis."He puffed the rest of the smoke into the air. Jasmin stayed in the restroom for a few minutes and so much had already happened in her absence. She didn’t mind that he worked with Vanessa. Being a big girl meant not crying, not throwing tantrums, and lastly, not jumping to conclusions. What she didn’t understand was why they had to be so fond of each other. Cainan reached for her hands and affectionately took them into his. He said something that made Vanessa’s eyes widen and disbelief spread across her face. She threw her arms around Cainan and hugged him tightly before pulling away, the wide smile still on her face. Jasmin’s eyes blurred up, and she grew sick in her stomach. She wanted to leave. She needed to leave now. She blinked back the tears from her eyes and with all the composure she possessed; she made her way over towards him, dragging her leg with her, and soon she was beside the two happy couple. ‘Easy, Jasmin, remember things are not always what they seem, take the advice you

She had stopped going to the restaurant because, according to Cainan’s calculations, this was her delivery week and she needed not to stress herself. She needed this, though; she had stayed home in the last two days and despite almost always being connected with Anita and Andrew to keep up with progress; yet she was running crazy. Anita was sitting on the covered toilet with her head buried in her palms and she was sobbing into it. The highest emotion she had seen her display was anger, which happened once in a while. Anita was always happy and positive, and she feared what might have changed
