Harper sat behind the desk, wearing a grey tux that fit snugly to his body
He was going over her files when she walked in,
"You…You're the Director?" Brenda stammered
"Brenda...?" Harper uttered in shock and quickly glanced at her file again. He had never expected that the girl he slept with last night would be the same girl walking into his office for this interview
Being romantically or sexually involved with a coworker was the last thing he wanted
And then suddenly he looked up with a cold glare and said sternly "Have a seat, Miss...",
"Michael" Brenda replied, feeling antsy now
She looked equally uncomfortable, but even more about how indifferent he acted towards her. Just last night, he had worshipped every crevice of her body, intoxicated with her, like she was a drug he was high off.
But now, she could not help but notice the coldness in his gaze. The kind soulful eyes she was trapped in last night, suddenly turned icy and piercing.
Her hands trembled in anticipation. "Great going, Brenda!" She scolded herself in her head
As much as she hated the idea of working under a man she had a one-night stand with and didn't even bother to learn his name, her entire future was riding on this single interview,
"Why are you looking for a new job, Ms. Michael? It says here in your file that you were in line for a big promotion at your previous company. What happened?" Harper's voice cut through the expanse of his office, shaking her out of her thoughts
There was something different about the way he spoke to her now, almost as if he resented her
Filled with anxiety, beads of sweat started forming on Brenda's forehead. She didn't know exactly why she was fired but figured that whatever the reason was, it wouldn't help her get closer to getting this job.
At this point, there was a slight tremble in Brenda's voice "Uhm...To be honest, I just got the retrenchment letter from my company this morning. They didn't quite explain why I was fired"
'Honesty?! Really, Brendan, you're going to go with honesty?' She scolded herself as soon as she said those words
She knew that if Harper already had her files, then he was already aware of the reason why she was fired. It was standard company protocol, so there was no point lying if he already knew the truth
She could feel Harper's icy gaze on her as she averted her gaze at the picture on the wall, her heart pounding in fear
Judging by his vicious glare, she concluded that he might not accept her into the company, which was why it came as a shock when he said
"You're hired" although sounding dull and indifferent. It did not seem like he wanted her at the company, but he could not also discard what an invaluable asset she'd be to them
"What?!" Brenda blurted in shock, completely amazed by the turn of events
"You begin on Monday. If you're late even by a minute, you're fired" Harper said coldly
His tone was calm even as he said those harsh words, and quickly the color disappeared from Brenda's face together with her excitement. She could already tell her new boss had it in for her.
Still, she swallowed hard and managed to give a smile "Thank you. I won't be late"
Having a new job was enough for her to swallow any insufferable acts or insults from him, even though this was going to be her new normal. Brenda could not imagine what made him suddenly change towards her, or if last night was all an act.
However, dealing with that could wait. All she wanted was to return home, find out why she was fired, and how Nathan was at her former job.
"That's all, you can leave" Harper rumbled
Brenda packed up her bag to leave when just then, the doors swung open and a beautiful mixed lady walked in elegantly. Her thick voluminous hair flowed gracefully on her back only adding more beauty to her moon-shaped face.
Upon seeing Ava, all her suppressed anger returned, together with the images that scarred her from last night
"You" Ava uttered disdainfully when she saw Brenda
She quickly averted her gaze towards Harper and waved her arm dismissively, "Harper what the hell is this tramp doing here?"
'Tramp?' Brenda growled inwardly. She wanted to yell 'How dare you call me a tramp when you're the one that slept with my boyfriend?', but quickly remembered she was still in her boss's office. Any violent outbursts could make him reconsider her employment, especially as she could sense she was already not in his good books.
"That'll be all Ms..." Harper's authoritative voice broke the tension, instructing Brenda to leave his office
As challenging as it was, she suppressed her anger, shooting Ava a scornful look just before walking out
"What the hell was that Harper, you're bringing tramps to your office now? We're supposed to get married. I'm sure, I don't need to remind you what happens to this company if anything jeopardizes our marriage?" Ava warned
Harper remained silent. He stood up slowly and walked to his enormous glass window, deep in thought. After a moment of reflection, he shifted his gaze back to Ava and said "We're done, get out",
"Huh?" Ava asked in shock
"I know you've been cheating Ava, and I know with whom. Your little boy toy in the city. You used Daddy's connection to get him that job at Silver Media Tech, didn’t you?”
Ava’s eyes widened in shock as he spoke, and then blurted in annoyance “Have you been stalking me?!”
“Get out! The marriage is off" Harper scowled, furrowing his brows at her
Ava was torn between denying the cheating accusation or threatening Harper, surprised at how he found out
She groaned and gripped her hair in frustration, glaring at him in disbelief
"You think you're some big shot huh? You might consider yourself untouchable but wait till my father hears of this"
"Ava" Harper called in a soft yet menacing tone
"Don't you ever dare threaten me again!" he rumbled
"And oh, tell your father I'll be looking forward to hearing from him" he added scornfully
"You'll pay for this," Ava said painfully and walked out
Immediately after she left the office, Brenda marched in angrily and snapped
"Did you know?"
"Who gave you permission to speak to me?!" Harper said in a low, deep voice that chilled her to the bone. Rage seeped into his eyes, making Brenda cower in fear and quickly shut her mouth
"I do not care what business your ex had with mine. So I suggest you leave my office now" Harper spoke, his words were not loud but they carried a strong assertive, and dominant effect that made Brenda want to yield
Still, she felt she needed answers and was not going to leave without them. She became more worked up the more she thought about it, however before she could get the next word in, Harper's office telephone rang. He hesitated at first, but eventually picked up, putting it on speaker.
"Who the hell is Brenda ... and why are you married to her?" A hoarse voice thundered furiously
"Dad", Harper blurted in shock
“I want this marriage annulled right now, or you can forget about your inheritance!” the man threatened
Brenda Michael packed up her desk a little early that Friday evening. For the past ten minutes, she had checked her watch at least five times, eagerly anticipating tonight. After waiting three years, it was finally here, the night she would say that life-changing word 'Yes'Her surprise dinner was by 7:30 pm, but here she was with barely twenty minutes left to get home. She raced towards her car excitedly and just as she reached, her phone vibrated with a text from her best friend AdinaAdina: "The cake is ready Brenda, I need to run a quick errand, so I won't be there when you pick it up, wishing you goodluckPS; Do not spare any details, I want to hear all about it when it happens, congratulations boo!"Brenda smiled excitedly "I can't believe this is finally going to happen finally" she squealedOf course, today wasn't any other day, this was the third anniversary with her boyfriend Nathan BradyThey'd been dating for three years, and Brenda had kept her relationship a secret from
Brenda's eyes were still heavy with tears to notice Harper. Dressed in a high-end bespoke suit; it was obvious to anyone that he did not belong there. All she wanted was to get drunk and forget everything that happened in the last hour. The bartender poured her a shot of vodka and Brenda muttered her thanks. One bottle went to two, then three till the memories began to fade.Harper sat at the other end of the bar keenly observing and admiring her. He couldn't tell what it was that got him so infatuated with Brenda. It wasn't just her auburn curls or cinnamon skin that added to her glow, despite being drunk. There was something deeper than her ethereal beauty that captivated him.He could read her like an open book and knew she was here for the same reasons he was. This was not just a girl drinking for fun; she was trying to forget something, just like him. The question on his mind was "What?"After watching her take her fourth shot, he stood up and strolled towards her, his faint foot
That night, after signing the marriage license, Harper hailed a night cab and took Brenda to his apartment. This was one of his few getaway spots and he figured she would be too drunk to remember her home address, so he took her there instead. It was a luxurious penthouse suite located in the heart of the city and cost seven million dollarsWhen they arrived at the apartment, Brenda's knees gave out but Harper caught her before she fell, and carried her to the master bedroom. Before Brenda could properly take in the penthouse layout, Harper turned to leave, but she quickly held his hand and mumbled weakly"Stay",Having only been with one man all her life, now that she had broken up with Nathan, nothing was stopping her. She wanted to taste new waters and experience what it would be like to be with someone different, someone newHarper slowly turned towards her, his heart beating rapidly as he saw her bare thighs through the slit of her dressHer eyes were like a bottomless black hole
