For a few seconds, Sarah didn't know what to do. It was like time had frozen. He was walking towards her in slow motion, his dark hair perfectly combed, his honey-colored eyes bright as the sun, his sharp jawline covered with a very thin but neat beard.

He looked like a Hollywood movie star. And then she realized she was dressed like a teenager. Not that she wasn't young, because she was, but she suddenly wished she had dressed better for the occasion.

She wasn't fitting in the scenario; her Converse sneakers, her old jeans, and her loosen ponytail. Her golden-red hair and her green eyes were the only things she could be proud of at that moment. All of a sudden, she wished she looked more like a woman and less like a girl. That would probably make her feel more professional in front of a billionaire CEO.

"Good morning, Miss Johnson." His hoarse voice invaded her ears like he was some type of god. It definitely suited him.

"Er… Good morning, Mr. Reed," she replied, getting up abruptly and bowing to him as a sign of respect. She felt ridiculous immediately after that, but kept her well-mannered etiquette.

He scanned her from head to toe, probably analyzing her choice of clothing for a job interview. It wasn't that bad, Sarah thought in her defense, even though she was the one criticizing it a few seconds before.

He pointed to the chair behind her, and she seated again, swallowing with difficulty. Why was her mouth dry all of a sudden? She was more nervous with his presence than with the interview itself.

"Do you have any experience with being a nanny?" He asked straightforwardly, not even introducing himself or offering her a cup of coffee.

"Er… I don't, but I take care of my grandmother. And I love kids," she added, seeing that her answer wasn't probably what he was expecting.

Mr. Reed crossed his arms in front of his chest, unaware of why that girl caught his attention. She wasn't anything special at all. She even dressed like a college girl.

"No experience then?" he repeated, still looking at her.

His gaze was making her feel embarrassed. It was like he could strip her soul with only his eyes. Beautiful and shining eyes, but still.

"I'm really good with kids. I'm sure you will give me a probationary period to see if I fulfill your requirements."

Victor raised his brows.

"Of course," he answered. "The last nanny was fired because she hit my nephew."

"So I heard," Sarah replied, trying to understand where she took the courage to talk to him so calmly now. It was like his eyes were defying her, and that was making her very angry somehow.

"Good. So I'll be much more strict from now on, to whoever gets this position."

"I understand. You can rest assured that I'd never hit a kid, especially one that's not my own." Sarah locked her eyes with his, even though her whole body was shivering inside.

How could someone be so imposing and exhale so much power without even moving? He was definitely distant and cold, but for some reason, she couldn't take her eyes off him.

Victor analyzed her for a few minutes without saying a word. And when he did, he was even ruder than before.

"What is it that you do? Do you work?"

"I work at a coffee shop. I need to pay the bills from the hospital. My grandmother is sick, so…"

"I didn't ask about your family. I just asked about your professional life," he interrupted her, making Sarah gasp in surprise.

"I'm sorry. I thought you'd like to know that I'm a good person, for professional purposes, of course. Guess I was wrong," she concluded, looking at her hands and trying hard not to cry.

"Yes, you were."

Why did he have to be so rude?

But Victor kept his eyes on her the whole time. Something that was really bothering him. Why couldn't he simply look away from that woman? What did she have that could possibly be special?

It was true that he did enjoy the way she talked to him, from equal to equal, trying to make conversation. He was used to people being scared of him and he didn't care, to be honest.

He could feel that she was intimidated by his presence, but she didn't look scared. It was more like she was nervous to get the job. Did she really need it that much? Now he regretted not letting her speak about her grandmother.

"The job requires you to live here. I'll pay you very well, of course. But I need you to be with my nephew the whole day. Would that work for you?"

"How much would you pay me?"

He raised his brows again. Victor pondered if he should say it right away or test her a bit more. He was actually enjoying this particular interview, even though he didn't know exactly the reason for that.

He got up and grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and wrote down a few numbers. When he handed it to the woman, he saw her eyes widening in shock and her hands slightly shaking.

"That… That would work for me. I could treat my Nana…" She whispered the last part to herself, but he heard it.

Why was he so curious about her?

"Benjamin takes his classes here. I heard you know Spanish and French?" Victor changed the subject, ignoring the questions inside his mind.

"I do know Spanish, but my French is not very good," she answered honestly, finally taking her eyes out of the paper and looking at him.

"You can teach him as well. I'll ask Carter to give you Benjamin's schedule."

"Who's Carter?" she asked, a bit more excited now. Even though they didn't sign any contract yet, it sounded like he was willing to hire her.

"The butler." He simply said.

"Is there anything else I need to know, Sir?" she completed, already annoyed with his temper. Didn't they teach important people that you can get much more by being polite and nice to others? Were rich people always that rude?

"You'll have a three-month probationary period. After that, we can talk again and see if you still want to continue here. If you don't screw up before that, of course."

"I won't screw up, sir. Don't worry," she answered sharply, but regretting right away.

Mr. Reed was going to pay her really well, enough for her to pay the bills for her grandmother's treatment. She could even put her in a very good nursing home, with medical assistance. Nana would finally have a good life quality. And perhaps even be cured.

Sarah could barely keep her excitement inside. But Mr. Reed was making it hard for her to externalize that. She understood that they were only employee and employer and their relationship would be strictly professional, but it would be nice to have a rational talk for a change.

"Good." Victor got up and closed his suit blazer in a very businessman pose. "I'll have someone sending you the contract then."

"When do you want me to start?" Sarah asked, also getting up from her chair.

"I'll give you the weekend to get things ready on your end. I'll expect you here on Sunday."

"Okay," Sarah said in a low voice. She didn't have a lot of time to find somewhere good for her grandmother, but she would do her best.

She definitely couldn't screw that up. Not only because she needed the money, but also because she didn't want to give Mr. Reed the satisfaction of knowing he was right and she couldn't handle it.

She would prove to him that she could be the best nanny in the world. Even if he made her life a living hell.

Nana was overjoyed, although Sarah could feel that she was a bit sad inside."I'll visit you on my days off, Nana," she explained.Mr. Reed was going to give her one day off per week, so she was going to be able to visit her grandmother. She also took the time to search for some nursing homes nearby, and she found one that looked incredible. They offered everything Nana needed and more, and Sarah could afford it with her salary now. Sarah cleaned her throat and collected herself, trying to pretend that her laughter was not a big deal."Ok, Ben. So, I think your uncle must have told you that I'll be your nanny, right?" She asked calmly with her soft voice. It was getting really hard not to look at Victor, since he was still there, frozen in the same place, watching her and Benjamin talk."Yes," Benjamin replied, but she could feel he wasn't feeling that comfortable anymore."Okay, let's make a deal? You'll let me know if I do something that you don't like, okay? We're going to be friends above anything. How does that sound?"Sarah didn't like to be observed, and she wasn't sure if Mr. Reed was the type of boss that would interfere in her job in front of the kid, but she hoped not. It was embarrassing enough to have him analyzing everything she was doing already.Benjamin nodded, a bit more at ease."Okay." "Good. Sarah woke up and it was still dark outside. She took a shower, got ready for the day and went downstairs to grab something to eat.Pouring herself a very dark coffee, she sat by the kitchen table and prayed that her first day went fine. "Buenos días, Sarah. How was your first night here? Did you sleep well?" Fabio, the cook, asked her. He was older than Sarah and had a very strong accent."I barely slept, to be honest. Guess I was too excited and nervous." She smiled."Oh, don't be. I'm sure you'll be fine. Benjamin is an easy kid.""Yeah, I could tell. But I also heard that Mr. Reed is very protective over the boy, so I think I'm just afraid to do something wrong," she confessed.Fabio left the pan on the stove and grabbed a cup of coffee as well, sitting in front of Sarah on the other side of the table."He really is. But he's also very reasonable. Mr. Reed never treated any of the servants badly. He might seem cold and all, but he's actually very nice to us."Sarah raised her brow

A few weeks had passed since Sarah started working at Mr. Reed's mansion, and with time, she had become really attached to Benjamin. They got really close after a few days, and the little boy was always asking about her whenever she had the day off.The fact that his nephew was always wanting to be around Sarah made Victor incredibly curious and intrigued about what that woman had to make Benjamin so infatuated with her.It was true that whenever he was at home, he managed to take a look at both of them to see what the nanny was doing and how she was treating his nephew. Victor also asked a few servants who he trusted the most to keep an eye on her and report everything when he got home from work. But he never received any complaints. On the contrary, they only had nice things to talk about her. He was also frustrated at himself for wanting to know so much about Sarah, because somehow he knew it wasn't just because he was worried about his nephew, but also curious about her.Sarah had

Sarah thought she could be sick at that moment. Firstly, she was still getting used to Mr. Reed calling her Sarah instead of Miss Johnson. She didn't feel like they were intimate enough for that when he asked if he could call her like that, but since he also called the other staff by their first name, she didn't want to overthink it.Secondly, it was rare for Mr. Reed to be at home so early. And thirdly, she wasn't expecting to be introduced directly to the woman. After everything she had heard about Alana, it took her a great effort to be polite and courteous with Mr. Reed's girlfriend or whatever."Hello, Miss Campbell," she said with the kindest voice she could. "It's very nice to meet you."Alana was behind Mr. Reed and looked at her from head to toe before saying anything."Oh, hello, dear. The pleasure is all mine."Sarah hoped her face didn't show any trace of her disgust for the woman's greeting. It didn't take an expert to notice that Alana was being the fakest and most cunnin

Victor had come home earlier that day because he wanted to keep an eye on Sarah and Benjamin. It was true that she had been working at the mansion for a few weeks now, but he still wasn't a hundred percent comfortable with leaving her alone with Ben, even though she hadn't given him any reason not to.He was also ignoring things that his mind kept repeating for himself about the nanny; that all this concern was just an excuse because he couldn't help but enjoy spending time with his nephew and Sarah. Whenever he was at home, he managed to get a way to be at least in the same room as them, even if he was handling some paperwork or anything of that sort. It was just nice to be around them, he thought. The atmosphere was peaceful. For so long, the mansion had been a very boring and cold place to be. The other nannies weren't that bright and funny, but with Sarah, Benjamin had become a happy and excited kid. So the mood in the mansion was always very pleasant ever since. But finding Alana

But the truth was that Sarah was wrong. Victor went to his bedroom that night thinking that he hadn't had that much fun in a long time. Unexpectedly, Sarah was proving to be a very capable nanny and a very funny and kind woman. She was always checking if Benjamin was comfortable and happy, but also wasn't afraid of kindly telling and educating him whenever he did something wrong. It had been a while since he also had spent a good time with Benjamin, carefree. He was always so into his work that when he had free time to be with his nephew, he was always tired and worried about something else. After that afternoon, Victor decided to bring his work home and be closer to Benjamin. That would also be a good opportunity to keep an eye on Sarah and see if her job was really that good. Of course he was ignoring the fact that her nanny's skills weren't worrying him anymore, so that was just an excuse to be around her as well.Benjamin seemed to be infatuated and fascinated with the woman, whic

Alana coughed a few times, clearly surprised. She was probably expecting him to agree with her and ask Sarah to leave, but he didn't. In fact, Mr. Reed didn't stop there. He continued as if he got really offended by her question."What's wrong with having Sarah dining with us, Alana?" he asked again, his hand tightened so hard on his fork, that his knuckles were turning white. She took a sip from the water in front of her, probably getting herself some time to think of an answer."No, of course not, Victor. You know that's not what I meant. I just…" She staggered for a moment. "I just thought that since we're here, it wasn't necessary for her to feed Benjamin. I mean, we could do it, right?" "Sarah always eats with us," he replied, his piercing eyes still on her. "That's how it is. So if you don't like it, you can leave," he concluded, shutting the case.Sarah was trembling inside, not believing her eyes and ears. It was the first time he stood up for her that way. It was a very cold winter's night, and Sarah was finishing writing her new trilogy book. A few years had passed since she started in this business. After working at the publishing company for years, they finally offered her a chance to try writing her own story, and she found herself doing something she never thought of. And surprisingly, she had a talent for it.Since then, her books had been doing very well, and the last one had become a New York Times best seller, which almost made her fall from her chair when she heard the news. She couldn't complain about what her life had become. If someone had told her that she would, one day, be working at home, taking care of her kids and being incredibly happy about it, she wouldn't believe them. She finally felt complete, happy, accomplished. The incident with Alana would eventually come back to her mind, but she would remind herself that the woman was now far away from them, inside a prison, unable to harm anyone else, especially her family

After a few months, Sarah had finally finished her last college semester. Victor had done everything he promised to do, and she was able to finish everything and even got an internship in one of his friend's company, on her own account especially. Of course they all learned who she was after she got in, but just the fact that she got inside on her own was enough for her.Victor had asked Camila if she wanted to take in the position of Ben's nanny, and the woman gladly accepted. She was already tired of just being a servant, and being his nanny was a much more pleasant chore for sure.Everyone in the mansion was more than used to the idea of Sarah being the new mistress, although she had forbidden them to treat her any differently. She hated those hierarchy rules and she didn't want to continue that inside the mansion, unless Victor objected. But since he had given her all the freedom and authority to do whatever she wanted in the house, she asked the servants to treat her the same way.

After that night, things at the mansion started to get back to normal. Victor had advised the investigative team to gather all the proof they had against Alana so he could take it to the police and do what was necessary for her to pay for what she had done.He had also intensified the security at the mansion and around his family, so things wouldn't get out of his control again. He didn't want to be the type of person that was always surrounded by bodyguards, but he thought it was something he had to learn to deal with from now on. Sarah had also convinced him that Benjamin could go to school, one that had very good references and that took the education and safety of their students seriously. The kid was always accompanied by the bodyguards who would wait for him outside of the building until time of departure. Victor wasn't very sure of this at first, but after seeing how Benjamin's eyes glowed in excitement only by the mention of it, he decided to give it a try. Sarah had advised

Sarah didn't react. She didn't know how. Was she surprised? Was she shocked? It was hard to say. "What?" she managed to ask, but her voice came out as a squeal."That… That… I don't even know what to call her," Victor said, furiously. "I just want to kill her right now. That's all I can think of."Sarah blinked."You don't mean that.""I do." He looked right into her eyes and she knew he was saying the truth. He really had the intention of making justice with his own hands."Victor, you are not this type of person. How could you possibly think of doing something like this?" she asked, her hand shaking with fear. "Can you imagine how I'm feeling, Sarah? If I hadn't put that woman inside my house, in my life, none of this would have happened. We wouldn't have lived that nightmare and we wouldn't have… I wouldn't have…"Victor was struggling to find the words to express himself, but she knew what he wanted to say. Sarah was in the living room that night playing puzzles with Benjamin. That had become one of their habits during her time as a nanny and she loved it. "You're getting better at this, Ben. Well done! You'll get faster than me in a while," she remarked, making the kid smile with pride."My daddy always played this with me," he said, sadness taking over his face. "Now he doesn't spend time with me anymore.""Don't say that, Ben. He's busy with work, but he's always trying to spend some time with you. It's just that… It's hard to be a grown up sometimes, you know? We don't have much time to do nice stuff like play with puzzles and watch a movie.""Why not?" "Because work gets in the way, and we also have more problems than when we were kids," she explained. "Sometimes we wish we could be kids again, you know that?""Well, I want to grow up soon," he replied. "You will change your mind once you get to my age. It's not that fun anymore. Victor was in his office at the company building since very early in the morning, trying to focus on a contract of nearly a hundred pages. His vision was getting blurry and not even several cups of coffee helped him to stay wide awake. His nights had been terrible ever since his fight with Sarah, and the fact that the investigation wasn't getting anywhere was also making him worried sick. He couldn't sleep knowing that whoever was trying to harm his family was still out there, in the shadows, probably planning their next move, while Victor was in the dark, knowing nothing. That made him frustrated and pissed off. He wasn't used to being the person out of control. If being a CEO taught him anything, it was that he liked to be in control of everything, and not being aware of the real danger lurking around made him uneasy."Mr. Reed, can I confirm your meeting with Mr. Flynn after lunch?" his secretary had asked him during some time in the morning. He remembered nodding to confirm, but h

The next few days had been the worst Sarah ever remembered experiencing in the mansion, besides the day she spent worrying about Benjamin when he was kidnapped. Not even when she first started working for Victor it had been so bad like now. After their argument, Sarah barely saw the man, and when she did, which was rare, he made sure to completely ignore her presence. He didn't even look at her direction, like she was invisible. And every time that happened, her heart shrunk to the size of a peanut. How was she supposed to move on, to forget her love for him if she had to see him every day?She also wasn't sure of what he meant by "taking a break". Was he suggesting that they only needed some time apart to make the anger go away? Or did he just not have the courage to break up with her? It was also impossible for Sarah to find some time to talk to him and apologize for her behavior if he didn't allow her to. On top of that, she still had the whole issue with Benjamin's kidnapping in h

After Victor left her "new" room, Sarah didn't know what to do. She felt like being alone, but knowing he was so close by the next door, yet so far, made her feel sick to her stomach. She just wanted to leave that house now and suffer by herself, without having to face him the next day.At this moment, her future was a blur. She couldn't imagine how she would manage to continue working there without Victor. But at the same time, she knew she couldn't simply abandon Benjamin. Her heart would break for good if she did that. More broken than it already was.She couldn't sleep there that night. And a sudden urge made her decide to rush downstairs and look for Camila. She was the only person that could hear her now without any judgments. At least, she hoped. She couldn't let her insecurities take over her anymore. She couldn't assume that everyone thought badly of her. When did she start to think that everyone hated her and saw her with ugly eyes like that? What had changed? She knocked sl

Victor stared at the door for a few minutes until he realized how wrong he was for telling those things to Sarah. She misunderstood him completely because he was so full of jealousy and couldn't express himself correctly. He didn't even want to tell her about it in the first place. He had promised himself not to mention that until the case was closed and he had found the real culprit. He never doubted her for a second, but seeing her with that man made his primitive and irrational thoughts burst out.It was true he didn't trust the man, he didn't even know him. As far as he was concerned, anyone could be behind the kidnapping. He was more than used to people doing things to attack him, so it wouldn't be the first time. And Sarah knew about his insecurities regarding that, so why couldn't she be a bit more understanding? He stormed out of the living room and followed her to her bedroom, opening the door without even knocking. She was lying on the bed and jumped out of fear after his in
