But the truth was that Sarah was wrong.

Victor went to his bedroom that night thinking that he hadn't had that much fun in a long time. Unexpectedly, Sarah was proving to be a very capable nanny and a very funny and kind woman.

She was always checking if Benjamin was comfortable and happy, but also wasn't afraid of kindly telling and educating him whenever he did something wrong.

It had been a while since he also had spent a good time with Benjamin, carefree. He was always so into his work that when he had free time to be with his nephew, he was always tired and worried about something else.

After that afternoon, Victor decided to bring his work home and be closer to Benjamin. That would also be a good opportunity to keep an eye on Sarah and see if her job was really that good. Of course he was ignoring the fact that her nanny's skills weren't worrying him anymore, so that was just an excuse to be around her as well.

Benjamin seemed to be infatuated and fascinated with the woman, which was making Victor more and more eager to understand his reasons.

Benjamin was taking his afternoon nap, and Sarah went to the living room to read a book, finding Mr. Reed there also doing the same thing, although his book didn't seem as entertaining as hers.

She wasn't expecting him to be at home, that's why she asked him if something had happened. She could feel he was also using that to be around and observe her work.

"Are you sure, Mr. Reed?" Sarah asked again, concern very present in her expression. "Because if I'm doing anything wrong, you can tell me."

Victor smiled, checking her face. She was very pretty when worried.

"You're not doing anything wrong, Sarah. I'm really only trying to be around Benjamin more. I know that this age is very important, and it also pains me that he can't be around people of the same age. So, if I can do anything to make up for that, I will."

Sarah nodded. "I understand." She gulped and looked at the window.

Victor realized she was uneasy, dying to ask something, but didn't find the courage to do it. So he decided to help her.

"Is there anything you want to ask, Sarah? Go on, don't keep it to yourself."

"Well, I just wondered, and I know this isn't my business, but I was just curious about why Ben can't go to a school and have interaction with kids his own age? Is there a reason for that?" she asked.

Victor analyzed her for a few seconds before answering. Sarah was already regretting making that question, but surprisingly, he gave her an honest and polite answer.

"I was scared to put Benjamin in a school. I have a few enemies in the field, you know?" Victor explained, his eyes were so serious that made her lose focus. "I didn't know what to do once I saw myself being responsible for a baby. And I didn't want to risk it. I'm not sure if I made the right decision, but anyway…"

Sarah blinked a few times, imagining a man like Victor suddenly being responsible for a little boy. He wasn't married, he had no family apparently, but still, he managed to raise the kid very well.

"You did an amazing job with Ben. He's the sweetest boy in the world."

Victor smiled, slightly shy. "I'm not sure I deserve credit for that. He has my brother's personality, so…"

"Regardless… A child's education can do a lot of damage if done wrong. So I'd say you deserve some of the credits, yes, if not most of it," she said, sincerely.

Victor seemed a bit astonished by her sincere statement, but pulled himself together instantly.

"Thank you, Sarah."

"With that being said…" she continued.

Victor raised his brows, finding amusing that she still had anything to add.

"Would you mind if I took him to the park nearby? I'd keep my eyes on him the entire time. I just think it would be very nice if he could have contact with other kids," Sarah explained.

"Sarah, I…"

"If it makes you feel more at ease, you can ask one of the guards to come with me," Sarah interrupted him.

Victor leaned against the chair, put his hands together and contemplated the ceiling, thinking about her suggestion.

"Maybe it wouldn't hurt to let him go out for a few hours. I will feel more relaxed if you have one of the guards with you, yes, but it's not because I don't trust you, but because I…"

"I know," she interrupted him again. "I understand, Mr. Reed. Don't worry."

Victor was taken aback, mainly because he didn't know why he felt the need to explain himself to Sarah. He didn't have any problem with showing how little trust he had in her at first. So why now he wanted to make sure she knew it wasn't because of that?

"Good. Then I think you can arrange that. I'm sure Ben will be delighted."

"Awesome!" Sarah said, giving little claps of excitement, which amazed Victor. She wasn't afraid of showing her feelings, that was certain. "I will tell him right away. Excuse me, Mr. Reed."

Victor nodded, observing her leave the room with her book in hand, her golden-red hair wobbling behind her back.

Sarah was so excited to tell the news to Benjamin that she didn't even hear the doorbell ringing. She went straight upstairs to wake him up and spread the good news.

A few minutes later, she went downstairs and found Victor and Alana seated at the dining table, her intolerable self flattering and smiling at Mr. Reed.

Sarah clenched her fists and teeth immediately, telling herself not to show any of her disgust over the woman in front of her boss. Whatever was the reason he had to be with Alana, she had nothing to do with that, and she couldn't mistreat his guests in his own house.

"Good evening, Mr. Reed. Good evening, Alana." She greeted them as soon as she reached the table and helped Benjamin sit on his little chair. The kid, on the other hand, pretended not to see the woman there, and even ignored his uncle.

"Hey, Ben. Is everything okay?" Victor asked, frowning.

Benjamin nodded, looking at his plate, as Sarah poured some vegetables she had chopped for him.

"Aren't you going to say hello to Alana? That's not very polite of you, don't you think?" Mr. Reed continued, with a soft voice. He knew the kid didn't like Alana, but being mannerless and rude was not something he had taught him.

The little boy tightened his fingers around his spoon and muttered an inaudible 'hello' to Alana, who opened a big smile and squeezed Victor's hand.

"Don't press the boy, Victor. He's probably shy. Let him be."

With that being said, she moved her attention towards Sarah, who was helping Benjamin with his food and also putting something on her plate.

"Is the nanny going to eat with us?" she asked, her high-pitched voice getting higher out of surprise.

Sarah dropped her knife, causing it to fall on her plate with a loud noise and spreading some pieces of carrot on the towel.

Her blood was boiling with anger for being looked upon that way, but also because she couldn't give a proper answer the way she'd like to.

But to her surprise, Mr. Reed stopped eating and looked at Alana with flaming eyes, almost as if he could burn her with just one glance.

"Do you have a problem with that?"

Alana coughed a few times, clearly surprised. She was probably expecting him to agree with her and ask Sarah to leave, but he didn't. In fact, Mr. Reed didn't stop there. He continued as if he got really offended by her question."What's wrong with having Sarah dining with us, Alana?" he asked again, his hand tightened so hard on his fork, that his knuckles were turning white. She took a sip from the water in front of her, probably getting herself some time to think of an answer."No, of course not, Victor. You know that's not what I meant. I just…" She staggered for a moment. "I just thought that since we're here, it wasn't necessary for her to feed Benjamin. I mean, we could do it, right?" "Sarah always eats with us," he replied, his piercing eyes still on her. "That's how it is. So if you don't like it, you can leave," he concluded, shutting the case.Sarah was trembling inside, not believing her eyes and ears. It was the first time he stood up for her that way. Life was being very kind to Sarah lately. Her grandmother seemed incredibly happy at the nursing home, being well treated and bonding with the elderly. Whenever Sarah had her day-off, she would take her Nana for a walk in the park, to the movies, or even just read a book to her while enjoying the sun in the garden outside. She missed spending some time with her grandmother, so those days were very special. Nana's health was stable, which alone was a relief for Sarah. She also hung out with her best friend, Brie, who was going abroad for work and would spend a long time away. Her life in the mansion was also going well. She had made friends with a lot of the people that worked there, especially Camila, who proved to be a trustworthy person and a very nice friend.Mr. Reed had relaxed a lot ever since her first day. Now, he didn't pretend to stay at home just to keep an eye on her. He finally trusted her with his nephew, which was a victory.Benjamin was the most special one for her.

The good days without Alana showing up at the mansion went by very fast. When Sarah realized, the woman was back to make her life a living hell. But so far, Alana had only threatened her with empty words and ugly faces. Until now. Benjamin was having his morning classes, so Sarah was enjoying some free time waiting for him to come down to have lunch. The staff was very busy preparing the place because Victor was going to have a dinner to celebrate with his partners, so the mansion had to be impeccable. For that reason, Sarah didn't have anyone to talk to, so she decided to grab her book and go to the living room. But her moment of solitude and peace was interrupted by the only person she didn't want to see at that moment. Or ever."Oh, so you're the only one here doing nothing apparently. Why is that? Don't you know how to do anything else except take care of a silly kid?" Sarah turned so fast that her neck snapped and she bit her lips to suppress her cry of pain. To be honest, her heart was aching much more."That's… That's not true, Mr. Reed. I…" But she stopped herself from saying anything, because he would never believe her words instead of Alana's. She was just an employee of the mansion, while Alana had been the only woman he had been with in years. He had no reason to believe her. He would never believe if Sarah said that Alana did that on purpose just to frame her.She noticed his eyes coming from Alana to the smashed vase on the floor and then to her eyes. Sarah almost collapsed as her legs trembled and failed for a second. Why was she so weak when he looked at her? Why did his eyes have so much power over her? But at this moment, for the first time, she felt he was looking at her in a different way.Victor had always given her tender and kind glances, even though she tried to convince herself that it didn't have a special reason. Since the incident with the vase, Victor did everything in his power to stay away from home, which wasn't that hard for him anyway. He always had things to do in the office and when he didn't, meeting his friends at the club wasn't too much of a sacrifice either. The truth was that he gave a damn about the object. In fact, he never really liked it. It reminded him of his mother, which wasn't a good memory at all. What was bothering him immensely was the fact that he couldn't take Sarah out of his mind.He never cared about women before. He was ashamed to admit that he was the type of man that only thought about women for selfish and lustful reasons. He had his own motives for that, one he never mentioned to anyone.Alana was someone easy to ignore. She was always around when he needed, and even if she wasn't treated nicely, she would always come back and be available for him.Whenever she started to talk and wanted to share anything with him, he'd simply shut his ears and not pay atten

Sarah could not believe her eyes when they arrived at Mr. Reed's country house. It was enormous. It looked a lot like the ranches she used to see in some of her Nana's Mexican soap operas. It had a lot of green; the house itself was too big to even see where it ended, and there was this beautiful garden outside that she fell in love with instantly.Benjamin rushed inside, grabbing his toys and calling Sarah to see his room. She was mesmerized by every single thing. The rustic side of it all pleased her a lot. She loved the city, but she always wondered what would it be like to live in a small town, with nature everywhere. A place where she could take Nana to breathe the fresh air, see the little birds singing outside every morning, and pick flowers from the garden. That was a sight she could imagine herself into. But she'd never have a chance to afford a house in such a place. Especially not one like that. She took some pictures and sent them to Nana before she unpacked her things.Vi

After a few months, Sarah had finally finished her last college semester. Victor had done everything he promised to do, and she was able to finish everything and even got an internship in one of his friend's company, on her own account especially. Of course they all learned who she was after she got in, but just the fact that she got inside on her own was enough for her.Victor had asked Camila if she wanted to take in the position of Ben's nanny, and the woman gladly accepted. She was already tired of just being a servant, and being his nanny was a much more pleasant chore for sure.Everyone in the mansion was more than used to the idea of Sarah being the new mistress, although she had forbidden them to treat her any differently. She hated those hierarchy rules and she didn't want to continue that inside the mansion, unless Victor objected. But since he had given her all the freedom and authority to do whatever she wanted in the house, she asked the servants to treat her the same way.

After that night, things at the mansion started to get back to normal. Victor had advised the investigative team to gather all the proof they had against Alana so he could take it to the police and do what was necessary for her to pay for what she had done.He had also intensified the security at the mansion and around his family, so things wouldn't get out of his control again. He didn't want to be the type of person that was always surrounded by bodyguards, but he thought it was something he had to learn to deal with from now on. Sarah had also convinced him that Benjamin could go to school, one that had very good references and that took the education and safety of their students seriously. The kid was always accompanied by the bodyguards who would wait for him outside of the building until time of departure. Victor wasn't very sure of this at first, but after seeing how Benjamin's eyes glowed in excitement only by the mention of it, he decided to give it a try. Sarah had advised

Sarah didn't react. She didn't know how. Was she surprised? Was she shocked? It was hard to say. "What?" she managed to ask, but her voice came out as a squeal."That… That… I don't even know what to call her," Victor said, furiously. "I just want to kill her right now. That's all I can think of."Sarah blinked."You don't mean that.""I do." He looked right into her eyes and she knew he was saying the truth. He really had the intention of making justice with his own hands."Victor, you are not this type of person. How could you possibly think of doing something like this?" she asked, her hand shaking with fear. "Can you imagine how I'm feeling, Sarah? If I hadn't put that woman inside my house, in my life, none of this would have happened. We wouldn't have lived that nightmare and we wouldn't have… I wouldn't have…"Victor was struggling to find the words to express himself, but she knew what he wanted to say. Sarah was in the living room that night playing puzzles with Benjamin. That had become one of their habits during her time as a nanny and she loved it. "You're getting better at this, Ben. Well done! You'll get faster than me in a while," she remarked, making the kid smile with pride."My daddy always played this with me," he said, sadness taking over his face. "Now he doesn't spend time with me anymore.""Don't say that, Ben. He's busy with work, but he's always trying to spend some time with you. It's just that… It's hard to be a grown up sometimes, you know? We don't have much time to do nice stuff like play with puzzles and watch a movie.""Why not?" "Because work gets in the way, and we also have more problems than when we were kids," she explained. "Sometimes we wish we could be kids again, you know that?""Well, I want to grow up soon," he replied. "You will change your mind once you get to my age. It's not that fun anymore. Victor was in his office at the company building since very early in the morning, trying to focus on a contract of nearly a hundred pages. His vision was getting blurry and not even several cups of coffee helped him to stay wide awake. His nights had been terrible ever since his fight with Sarah, and the fact that the investigation wasn't getting anywhere was also making him worried sick. He couldn't sleep knowing that whoever was trying to harm his family was still out there, in the shadows, probably planning their next move, while Victor was in the dark, knowing nothing. That made him frustrated and pissed off. He wasn't used to being the person out of control. If being a CEO taught him anything, it was that he liked to be in control of everything, and not being aware of the real danger lurking around made him uneasy."Mr. Reed, can I confirm your meeting with Mr. Flynn after lunch?" his secretary had asked him during some time in the morning. He remembered nodding to confirm, but h

The next few days had been the worst Sarah ever remembered experiencing in the mansion, besides the day she spent worrying about Benjamin when he was kidnapped. Not even when she first started working for Victor it had been so bad like now. After their argument, Sarah barely saw the man, and when she did, which was rare, he made sure to completely ignore her presence. He didn't even look at her direction, like she was invisible. And every time that happened, her heart shrunk to the size of a peanut. How was she supposed to move on, to forget her love for him if she had to see him every day?She also wasn't sure of what he meant by "taking a break". Was he suggesting that they only needed some time apart to make the anger go away? Or did he just not have the courage to break up with her? It was also impossible for Sarah to find some time to talk to him and apologize for her behavior if he didn't allow her to. On top of that, she still had the whole issue with Benjamin's kidnapping in h

He never doubted her for a second, but seeing her with that man made his primitive and irrational thoughts burst out.It was true he didn't trust the man, he didn't even know him. As far as he was concerned, anyone could be behind the kidnapping. He was more than used to people doing things to attack him, so it wouldn't be the first time.
