[Atticus]
Laz records the results, documenting this decision in the meeting log and we move on to the next element of the game--choosing the method. As last year’s winner, I get to choose.
“I thought we’d go a bit ‘old school’ for this year’s game,” I announce as I stand and pull an old deck of cards from the pocket of my jacket. “My father told me about this one year where he just picked 7 random cards from a simple deck, labeled the cards with a word related to the theme, and then everyone picked a card. Because there are always seven of us, they’d try to pick a theme that had seven options. One of their favorite themes was a game they called the ‘Seven Deadly Sins.”
I separate out 7 cards and a pen. Laying them out before me, I write a sin on the top of each card, putting “LUST” on the ace card and going in order from there.
“Just like in previous games, our actions will be scored by the other 6 Legacies based on a simple point system.
I pause, to make sure everyone understands before I continue.
Shuffling the 7 cards in my hands over and over again, I walk around the table, holding the cards out in a wide fan. “No trading, no changing your mind. Once you pull a card you are committing to using this card as the focus of your attack. Agreed?”
Everyone around the table nods in agreement. Not a single hand is raised to question this decision.
“Think of yourselves as champions for the sin card that you pull. The rest of us will be watching to see how well your attacks match the sin you are representing and score you accordingly.”
I shuffle the cards one last time and lay them out in a fan in the center of the table, all cards facing down. Starting with Evie and moving clockwise around the table, one by one we each pick a card until there is only one left, which I pick up and hold tightly to my chest.
Once all the cards are chosen, one by one, each of the seven announces their cards in the same order they were chosen.
Evie is Wrath
Veronica is Envy.
Lazarus is Greed.
Madison is Pride.
Zephyra is Sloth.
Simon is Gluttony.
Which leaves only one card for me.
“Lust,” I announce as I hold my card up for everyone to see. It is the ace of spades. Ace, just like my nickname. I almost want to laugh at my good luck. Playing the lust card against Liliana Adare will almost be too easy.
“I guess I’ll pretend to be her boyfriend this year,” I grin and shrug. Everyone starts to chuckle, except for Evie who is so angry that her body is shaking as her face turns red, then purple.
“You…you…CAN’T!” Evie explodes, her emotion bursting forth and spilling over as she loses it. “This was a setup! You wanted to date her this whole time! Admit it!”
“Now Baby, hold on…” I try to calm her but she pulls away from me.
“NO!” she shouts. “I can’t believe a single word you say! Ace! Seriously, you pulled the ace card. Of all the cards you get that one? This is some grade A bullshi…”
“But you’re the one who suggested Lily in the first place,” I argue, interrupting her rant. “How would I know that you’d pick Liliana?”
“After your display this morning?” she scoffs and then turns on the rest of them. “Were you all in on this too? You were all awfully nice to her this morning…”
“It’s just a game,” Simon rolls his eyes. “Chill out Evie. You’re boring when you’re angry.”
Evie looks like she is about to crawl over the table, grab Simon by the collar, and hit him repeatedly. So I stand between them, my arms outstretched.
“There is no secret plan, Evie,” I promise her. “It’s just a coincidence. Besides, none of this is real. You know that. It’s all just a game.”
“ARGH!!!” she screams in a fit, she runs out of the room slamming the door in her wake.
Sighing, I take a deep breath and follow her.
I find her leaning against the wall of the hallway just outside the library. She has sunken to the ground, her head on her knees, sobbing quietly.
“Hey, Evie.” I pat her on the shoulder. “It’s going to be okay.”
“No it’s not,” she argues through her tears.
I sit down next to her on the ground and wrap my arm around her shoulders, pulling her into my chest. She melts into me, sighing.
“Don’t worry Baby Doll,” I place a quick kiss on the top of her head. “You know you’re the only girl for me. Besides,” I add with a sly wink, as she looks up “think of how much fun you’ll have torturing her every time she looks in my direction. The rest of us might need to play nice to make our plan work, but you’ll be able to hurt her for looking at me all you want. You pulled the wrath card,” I remind her.
Her pout twists into a smile as she thinks about all the ways she could make Lily suffer.
“So are you ready to do this?” I coax her playfully. She smiles and I know I’ve won. We walk back into the room, hand in hand.
The games have officially started.
[Lily]The rest of my day was completely uneventful and went by quickly, thankfully.By the time Nyx and I woke for breakfast the next day, everything from the day before felt like a distant memory, something we could laugh about now that we had survived it. “Did you see how her eyes bulged,” Nyx acts out Evie’s face from the morning before and I try not to laugh too loudly as we make our way to the counter holding all of the dishes and cutlery. “I honestly thought she was going to kill you.”“You’d think that the school would have kicked her out by now,” Nyx carefully looks both ways before she mumbles almost incomprehensibly beneath her breath. “Everyone knows she is a danger to herself and others. How she has managed to stay out of prison is a miracle.”“Miracle,” I snort, rolling my eyes. “More likely it was a deal with a lesser-known demon.”Nyx laughs loud enough to make some poor freshman drop his glass of milk.“Sorry,” Nyx winces, feeling bad. Nyx is my best friend, and I lo
[Lily] The first thing I notice is that Evie is absent. Which is probably why there is room at their otherwise full table. Atticus sets down the tray and places our food at the two available spots while the rest of the Legacies shuffle to make room on the bench. This situation is too perfect. Which means something is not right. “Are you sure this is okay?” I ask, looking around to see if Evie is hiding somewhere or peeking around the corner, ready to strike at me for daring to talk to her boyfriend. “What about Evie?” “She had a very long night,” Atticus assures me, his face deadly serious. “Too much celebrating. She woke up feeling sick so we probably won’t see her today.” “Oh, what a bummer.” Realizing that sounded a little cold, I add, “Hopefully she’ll feel better soon.” Veronica rolls her eyes and snorts. She knows I don’t care about Evie. She’s Evie’s best friend, so I don’t expect her to believe me.“So Lily,” Atticus smiles. “Welcome to the Legacy table.”I just sit th
[Lily]By the time I made it back to where Nyx had been sitting, she was long gone. There isn’t even a trace that she has been sitting here. I checked our dorm room, but there was no sign that she had made it back there yet. If seeing me sitting with the Legacies irritated her this badly, there is only one place she would go. And that is exactly where I found her. She is sitting underneath the only walnut tree on school property, a giant of a tree, both wide and tall, it has branches that extend in all directions, creating a large canopy of shade in the summer and a wealth of walnuts in the fall. Once upon a time, the land the school sits on was a walnut orchard with walnut trees in all directions, as far as the eye could see. But they were all chopped down to build this school. They somehow missed this one.Like us, this tree is a survivor.Without saying anything, I take a seat next to Nyx who is on the ground, her head upturned and her eyes closed. Our backs resting against the b
[Lily] I open my eyes. The light streaming through the trees gives Atticus a golden halo that makes him appear angelic when combined with his god-like smile. I would think I’ve died and gone to heaven except that I know better. Heaven has fewer headaches and sore backs from leaning against a tree for half the morning. Maybe he’s a fallen angel? That seems about right. Weren't the first demons angels who fell into hell? “You want me to do what?” I blink at him groggily, rubbing my eyes with one hand while shielding them from the sun with the other. "Have lunch with me," he smiles brightly. "Off campus," he adds with an outstretched hand. Against my better judgment, I let him help me off the ground. "What do you mean, off-campus? We aren't allowed off-campus unless we have special permission for family things or field trips." "I do have special permission," he smirks. "Unlimited special permission." I notice he's still holding my hand so I remove it from his grasp. I don't tru
[Lily] Atticus leans over the door of his car, inching his body closer to mine in what will end up being a real kiss if I don’t move out of the way. So I pop open the door with a hard thrust, hitting him directly in the center of his well-formed abs. You’d think with abs like his it wouldn’t make a dent, but he hadn’t been expecting it, so he wasn’t prepared. Instead, his body made a satisfying “oof” sound of air being pushed from his body as he fell backward onto the compact dirt of the trailhead. “You weren’t serious, right?” I laugh. “Because I’m not going to be blackmailed into kissing you. If you get me arrested, I’ll have no problem telling everyone whose idea it was. Also, I’d rather go to prison than risk Evie killing me because any part of my body touches any part of yours.” “You’re more afraid of my girlfriend than you are of the police?” He raises an eyebrow in mock confusion as he picks himself up off the ground. He knows how scary she is. How could he not? “Aren’t yo
[Lily]“Nyx! Wait up!” I shout as I follow her back into the school. The lights overhead are starting to glow as the sun slowly sets. I hadn't realized it, but Atticus and I had been gone all day.“I can’t believe I was worried about you! Do you know who told me where to find you? Evie! Of all the people in the damn world to have more of a clue about where you were than your best friend, to think it would be that soul-sucking, foul-mouthed succubus girlfriend of his!”Nyx is out of breath as she spins on her heels, stopping her march just long enough to give me a cold, hard look over her shoulder. “By the way, if I were you, I’d start walking these halls with some type of weapon hidden in your jacket because you’re going to need to defend yourself if she ever gets you alone.”“Shit,” I swear, cursing the name Atticus Preston inside my head. He said he had taken care of Lily. He lied. Of course, he did. It was probably all part of his plan. “He told me it would be okay,” I whined and t
[Atticus] I’m not sure why I took our target into the woods. My goal had been to impress her, while also making her feel so overwhelmed and out of her depth that she’d feel like she had no choice but to cling to me like a life raft in a sea of sharks. That’s why my original plan involved taking her to the La Fleur Bluet and then showing off my wealth with a little high-end shopping. The idea was, that once she realized that she had no choice but to depend on me to know what to do and not look like a fool, I’d have her exactly where I wanted her. She would NEED me. Or at least, she would think that she did. Easy prey. But easy also isn’t fun. What is the point of playing a game if it isn’t fun? The reason I wanted her as the focus for this year’s games is because she has been unbreakable. The ultimate challenge. I like a good challenge. And a challenge isn’t a challenge if you know with certainty that you are going to win. So I did something different. I tried to be her frien
[Lily] There are things in this world that I wish I could unsee. The color of Evie’s thong is one of them. I had come out into the halls in hopes of finding Atticus so that we could clear the air between us. I am so confused about what he wants from me. Is it friendship, or is it something else? And then I turned into the main hall and I got my answer. I also found Atticus. Positioned between her legs, Atticus was grinding himself into her, pressing Evie against the wall to the Legacy staircase as she moaned loud enough to wake the dead. It was such a display I couldn’t help but gasp. I had never seen something so intensely primal before. They were not just making out, they were moments away from rutting like wild animals in front of the whole school. Atticus was so wrapped up in his seduction that he didn’t notice me at first, but Evie…her eyes were wide open and she was looking directly at me. So I ran away. I didn’t tell Nyx about what I saw. I simply curled into bed, t
