[Travis’ POV]
By the time the sun rose, the packhouse was nothing more than a smoldering pile of rubble and lost souls. Around me, those who survived mourned their lost loved ones and shot accusations towards me, insisting that everything was planned by Marissa.
"Alpha," Ace murmured, placing a hand on my shoulder. "All that has been lost has been accounted for. A total of fifty were lost and another twenty are still missing. "
"Right," I sighed, running a hand across my face. The night had been long and emotional for all. I was utterly exhausted, but there was still so much that needed to be done.
Turning, I took in the accusatory glares of those who had survived. Up til now, I hadn’t addressed the attack, but I guess now was as good of a time as any.
"I know what you all think, but I know that Marissa had no hand in this." I began, projecting my voice enough for everyone to hear. "And to prove her innocence, I will do everything in my power to find those responsible." Though I knew who was behind the bombing, I couldn’t possibly say it until I had enough evidence. My damned uncle was well respected among the pack, as was his disgusting son, Gregory. "For now, we will begin collecting the bodies of the dead and set up a proper send-off." I continued, pushing aside my rage over my own stupidity. "By sunset, we will set them ablaze."
Burning the bodies was the only way to go for those who gave their lives for the pack. Sure, some opted for the modern way of burying, but we just didn’t have a big enough grave site for that.
Finished speaking, I began to make my way towards the forest line to wait for Thomas and the others to come back. I could just barely make out their presence drawing closer, but I didn’t feel Marissa with them. By this point, I could only hope that maybe they had a clue as to where she got off to.
However, when they finally appeared, I knew immediately by the looks on their faces that they had nothing. In an instant, I felt my heart turn to stone and my world turn bleak. Marissa had managed to disappear entirely, and with all the time that had passed, the chances of finding her were slim.
"Travis," Thomas said, frowning. "We did our best but..."
"It was like someone was keeping us from finding her." Kim offered, elbowing Thomas. "Don’t beat around the bush, dude."
Nodding, I took in their tired faces and dirt-covered skin. Like the rest of us, they were clearly exhausted, and all that I could do now was allow everyone to rest.
"If you’re tired, there is a cabin a little ways down." I began, motioning towards where my mother's old safe place was. "You’re more than welcome to go there to wash up and get some sleep. We will be sending off the dead later this evening. I don’t know if any of you want to come, but...
"Of course we’ll come." Thomas snapped, cutting me off. "How can we leave you without any moral support?"
For a moment, I was stunned by his words. But soon I felt the side of my mouth twitch in an attempt to smile.
"Thanks." I said, clapping him on the shoulder. "You all have been such a blessing to me and Ma..." Lifting a hand, I clutched my heart as a pain shot through me from just trying to say her name.
"Don’t worry," Kim said quickly, her eyes growing wide. "We’ll find her."
"I know."
Even though I wasn’t so sure that we would, I had to hold out hope that she was somewhere out there just waiting to be rescued. This thought alone was the only thing holding me together.
Later, as the sun began to set, everyone gathered in front of the remains of the packhouse and watched as many pallets that were quickly erected were set ablaze, allowing those that lay on them to begin to burn.
There wasn’t any sound from the crowd, only the heavy sadness of a pack that lost many of their beloved mates. Despite insisting I would find the ones responsible for the attack, I could still feel the distrust of those around me and found myself joining them in their hate.
"Alpha, I can handle this if you want to go." Ace murmured, also noticing the hostility that was beginning to spread.
"No," I replied."If I were to bow out now, it would only make me look worse. I will stay here and I will deal with all of this. "
"Are you sure?" Ace asked, seeming genuinely concerned for me.
"Of course." I sighed. "You can’t handle the pack alone, especially since Chris has still not been accounted for."
"Right."
Growing quiet, Ace turned his attention back to the scene ahead. I was sure that I had managed to hit a sore spot with him in mentioning Chris’ disappearance. Though we all grew up together, Ace and Chris were inseparable since childhood, whereas I only got to know them after taking my position as alpha. I was sure this loss hit hard for him, even if he wasn’t willing to say anything about it.
"Anyway, I intend to find us a new place to live by tomorrow." I continued, setting my determination to begin to rebuild this pack from the ground up. "Be sure to let everyone know they have a day to collect their things from their homes. We will all be staying together until the attackers are found. It is too fucking dangerous to be living separately for the time being, understood. "
"Yes, sir." Ace saluted.
Satisfied that my orders would be fulfilled, I turned to where Thomas, Kim, Sarah, and Simon stood. As their curious gazes met mine, I took a deep breath and strolled over.
"What’s up?" Thomas asked, eyeing me suspiciously. "You look like you’ve got something interesting to say."
"I know that all of you seem to like life on your own, but I have a favor to ask." I began, deciding to jump right in. "Will all of you join us in relocating?"
"Join you?" Kim repeated, raising a delicate eyebrow. "What exactly do you mean?"
"I mean," I said, preparing myself for whatever their response may be. "Will you be temporary members of my pack?"
"Temporary?"
Turning, I felt my eyes grow wide as I took in a very ragged-looking Max. With everything going on, I didn’t even think of him, but here he was limping towards me, looking like he had been through hell.
"What happened to you?" I asked, eyeing him. "Were you buried in the rubble?"
"No," Max responded, frowning. "I chased after those bastards, but they got away."
"Aren’t you blind?" Kim asked in confusion.
"I still have my innate wolf senses." Max pointed out. "Anyway, that isn’t important right now. What is important is that I watched Gregory and Davison climb into a helicopter and leave. "
"Are you fucking serious?" I growled, drawing the attention of those closest to us. "So they could be anywhere by now!"
"Seems we will have to search the entire world." Max sighed. "I hope you’re ready for the long haul, cuz. Because this battle isn’t going to end anytime soon."
Two Month’s Later[Marissa’s POV]The world blurred around me as I ran as quickly as I possibly could. Strange creatures were chasing me, wanting to use me as their next meal. Despite knowing that I could probably take them on, I found myself unwilling to risk the child within me. I needed to protect it with everything I had. I couldn’t let it be killed. It was the only thing helping me remain sane.Since waking up in a clearing with absolutely no memories of anything before that moment, I had struggled with remaining in control. Some days were harder than others, but up to this point I managed to keep the dark from taking me completely. However, now I found myself the prey of strange beasts with skeletal heads and decayed bodies. I didn’t know how they managed to find me or what they wanted, but no matter how quickly I ran, they kept up their chase.Panting, I chanced a glimpse to find the creatures becoming dangerously close. I needed to hurry, but I was afraid that shifting now wou
Two Years Later[Travis’s POV]I walked slowly up the path that led to the large, metal prison that had become home. Stopping, I stared up at its cold exterior and found that it matched my interior perfectly. Two years had passed since that night, the night that changed my life forever. Since then, despite searching high and low, travelling across the world more than once, and even seeking the help of the most expert of hunters, there was no sign of her. It was almost like she had fucking never existed to begin with. Hell, if her parents didn’t visit regularly to ask about my findings in regards to her, I truly would have thought that I imagined her this whole time."Snap out of it." I huffed, shaking my head and beginning to move once more. "Standing here thinking about her isn’t going to make her appear."Trying to ignore the pain that was beginning to radiate through me, I leaned down and put my eye to the advanced system lock that only allowed those it recognized in. Once the robo
[Travis’s POV]"Here’s your latte." A waitress who was being much too friendly announced, "Is there anything else I can get you?""Uh-hum." I bit back the laugh that wanted to escape as my eyes took in Kim’s pursed lips and clearly narrowed eyes that were hidden by large sunglasses. "Did you forget my drink?""Oh, I..." the waitress stammered, clearly seeming uncomfortable. "I’m so...""Sorry," Kim chirped, flashing her teeth. "Then get to it!"I watched as the waitress quickly scurried off, leaving just Kim and I at our table. Letting out a chuckle, I met Kim’s amused gaze. After Thomas’ news, we had agreed to come to town the following day to keep an eye out for Marissa. Apparently, she had appeared in this area multiple times in the past few weeks. I could only hope that today was one of the days that she showed."You know, if Marissa saw that, she’d beat the shit out of you." Kim pointed out now, causing my light-hearted mood to crumple completely. "Oh, whoops.""It’s fine." I sig
[Marissa’s POV]"What were you doing?" Davison demanded, slamming his hand on the wall behind me. "Why didn’t you kill him on the spot?"I eyed the hand that was now resting beside my head while trying to keep my anger in check. I knew something about that man was different, but what was it and why was Davison so angry about me meeting him?"Who is he?" I asked slowly, meeting Davison’s dark gaze. "It seems that you really dislike him."Remaining silent, I took in his expression as he considered my question. For a second, I could have sworn there was a flicker of something in his eyes, but before I could figure out what it was, it was gone."That doesn’t matter." Davison huffed, taking a step back. "Just remember, the next time you see him, kill him.""Right."Nodding, I found my mind wandering to the man in question. Something about him and the way he felt when we touched seemed so familiar, but I didn’t know why. Was he someone from my past? Or was I just overthinking this? Either w
[Travis’s POV]A string of profanities escaped me as I continued to stare at the spot where Marissa had just been. How in the hell was it possible that I just had her within reach and she was once again gone? This was some sick twist that fate had dealt me, and I wasn’t a fan."Travis," Kim murmured, coming up beside me. "We should head back and inform the others of what happened.""Mmm."She was right; I couldn’t just stand here feeling sorry for myself over what happened. I needed to come up with a game plan. If Marissa had appeared here once, there was a good shot she would come again. I just needed to get a feel of her schedule so I could be in the right place at the right time."Right," I huffed, beginning to move. "Can’t let this get me down.""That’s right!" Kim chirped, beginning to skip behind me. "That’s the big guy I know.""Could you stop calling me that?" I sighed, feeling a twinge of annoyance at her nickname for me. "Nope." Kim giggled. "You’re big guy and will always
[Marissa’s POV]An odd chill raced down my spine as I stared straight ahead at the black car that was pulling up in front of us. I could only assume by Davison’s sudden perking up that this was the person that he had been waiting for; the very important guest.I bit back any questions I may have had about the identity of this person to have even the mighty Davison on edge. and waited with baited breath as the car came to a stop.Slowly, the front passenger side door opened and a man dressed in a black suit with black sunglasses hopped out. Making his way around, he stopped at the back driver's side door and began to open it, allowing a large man dressed in all red with a pencil mustache and bushy brows to step out.Letting out a yawn, the man looked around the area until his eyes met Davison. Immediately, his bored expression changed to one of excitement as he opened his arms wide and let a broad smile spread across his face."Davison!" He boomed, beginning to move forward. "Oh, how l
[Marissa’s POV]I held my breath as Davison considered Xavier’s request. If that bastard turned around and agreed, I would turn this whole fucking mansion upside down. It was one thing to use me to get revenge on someone, but another thing entirely to give me away as a prize."We will discuss this again after I’ve managed to achieve my goal." Davison said slowly, keeping his gaze fixed on Xavier’s.At his words, I released a breath I didn’t realize I was holding."Fair enough." Xavier shrugged. All serious conversation died down after that and was reduced to simple small talk as the two men ate their meals and drank. Once it was over, Xavier insisted that he needed to head out for other business, and I was finally allowed to leave, as I had another mission to handle for Davison. According to him, if I failed again, he would be sure to throw me in the hold for a week, meaning that I couldn’t fail. I could only hope that I didn’t end up running into any distractions like I had the last
[Marissa’s POV]I braced myself as the hunters began to make their way towards me. Behind me, I could hear Travis let out a growl as a powerful aura erupted from him. I had to admit, it was impressive. I hadn’t felt anything that strong, not even from Gregory or Davison."Stay back." Travis hissed, grabbing my shoulder and giving a tug. "I’ll handle these guys.""No," I shot back, shaking him off. "I’m not some damsel that needs your help."Extending my claws, I surged forward, leaping out of the way of an arrow that threatened to pierce my chest."Nice try." I beamed, grabbing the hunter's weapon and pushing it into his chest. "I’ll take this." I continued as he bent over to gasp.I yanked the weapon from his grasp and brought the butt of it down between his shoulders, sending him sprawling. Pulling the trigger, I let an arrow land in the back of his head, sending blood and brain matter splashing onto my clothes and the floor. Not wasting any time, I turned and aimed for another, lan
[Marissa’s POV]We continued to run until I could just make out the portal that would take us back to our world. Just as Thomas had intended, we managed to escape, but was it really something to be relieved about?"That…" Ace huffed as we stopped at our exit. "How could someone...""Ace," Travis warned, stopping him before he could say anything more. "Not the time."As he scolded his delta, I could feel his eyes on the back of my neck. Since stopping, I couldn’t focus on anything except for Thomas’ figure slamming into a fully ablaze wendigo. How could he do something so reckless? We could have figured out a way to escape without that!"Hey."Tensing, I slowly turned my attention to Kim, who was standing beside me with an unreadable look on her heart-shaped face."Hm?""We aren’t just going to leave him, right?"Not leave him… No, I didn’t like the sound of that. We all came here together to try to eliminate a threat, and we should all be going home together. But as of now, we don’t k
[Marissa’s POV]I did my best to stay ahead of Travis so that he wouldn’t see the look of worry that I was sure was showing on my face. Though I had promised not to get myself killed, I didn’t quite know what would happen during this upcoming battle, and I was making a promise I had no control over."Hey!"Gasping, I found myself being tugged backwards as Travis’ arm wrapped around my waist, sending tingles of delight through me."What’s up with the avoidance?""Nothing," I responded, keeping my gaze fixed on those ahead of me. "I’m doing no such thing.""Try that on someone who doesn’t know better."Huffing, I looked at our group, which was clearly oblivious to mine and Travis’ back and forth, before wriggling around to meet Travis’ worried gaze. Immediately, I felt my heart clench and regretted my actions, but I was trying to be realistic."Tomorrow isn’t promised."It was the easiest way to describe exactly what I was feeling. No matter how hard we fought, we couldn’t change what w
[Travis’ POV]I watched in horror as Kim and Marissa grabbed hands and leapt forward, disappearing beyond the ledge of the cliff. What the hell did they think they were doing? Were they trying to bring about their own deaths?Cursing, I rushed forward, preparing to jump too, but stopped as Thomas’ arm wrapped around me."Let go!" I growled, unable to control my raging emotions. "I can’t just...""Use your eyes, asshole," Thomas huffed, nodding towards the abyss below. "One wrong leap and your ass is done, can’t you see it?"See it? What the fuck was he talking about?Peering down, I took in the empty space below. There was no sign of Marissa and Kim, nor were there any signs of the damned wendigos that we were hunting. Where the fuck did they all go?"Do you see any human pancakes down there?" Thomas continued, acting smug. "That means that there is something that we are missing, but Marissa and Kim managed to find."Trying to calm my emotions, I began to search the area, trying to fi
[Marissa’s POV]"How much longer are we going to sit here?" I grumbled, shifting positions for the fourth time since arriving. "I can't feel my ass anymore."After convincing Travis to allow me to accompany him on his wendigo hunt, we wasted no time in heading out. With Thomas leading the way due to his tracker background, we made our way deep into the woods until we arrived at a spot that radiated a good amount of wendigo energy.By Thomas’ assumption, this was a spot that they frequented, and the chances of us finding one here were pretty good. We could only hope that this evening they would be out and about. Otherwise, we would have to retrace our steps again and again until we found them.Hoping for the best, we set up camp downwind on the limbs of a tree above to wait."You didn’t have to come," Travis points out, giving me a smirk. "But once we’ve done what we came here to do, I’ll massage your ass.""Who wants you to massage their ass?" I grumped, though the thought of him doin
[Travis’ POV]Later, I lay in bed with Marissa and Kayden curled up beside me. And as much as I would have loved to just stay where I was, I knew that there was still much to be done in order to achieve the future that both Marissa and I were hoping for. After finishing with Bex’s send off, everyone went their separate ways. Where Ken went with Max and Thomas back to his home to try to gather some supplies for his stay with my pack, Marissa, Kayden, and I came here to shower and then read Kayden a story. After he fell asleep, neither of us wanted to move out of fear of waking him, so we stayed, and soon Marissa drifted off as well. Based on the light shining in the room from the moon, I could only assume it was getting close to midnight and that it was time for me to make my move.Being cautious not to wake the sleeping duo beside me, I slowly climbed out of bed and made my way across the room."I’ll be back soon," I whispered, shooting Marissa and Kayden one more glance before headin
[Travis’s POV]I let my gaze slowly take in all that were gathered before me. All those present were the ones I trusted the most. I was sure there were more rats among my pack, but finding them would have to wait until I dealt with their leader."Welcome," I announced, bringing the meeting to attention. "I’m sure most of you are curious about why I called you here today."Growing quiet, I waited as murmurs began to sound around the table. Most were speculations about what today’s topic would be. Once it died down again, I sucked in a breath and prepared to continue."I’m sure most of you remember the attack on the packhouse two years ago." I began, earning myself a look of shock and confusion from Marissa. Shit, I forgot that she was already gone by the time it happened. It seemed I would have to explain everything to her later. "At the time, I couldn’t place blame on any particular individual because I didn’t have enough evidence."Growing quiet once more, I gathered my thoughts, pre
[Marissa’s POV]Later that day, I walked slowly towards where I had left my father, with Travis’s hand wrapped tightly around mine. Embarrassment flowed through me over what happened between the two of us, and I found myself becoming self-conscious about what others would say when they saw the fresh mark on my neck.As if the universe were helping me along, Kim popped out from around a corner and rushed forward, a look of relief forming on her face."Where have you…" she began, but stopped as soon as her eyes came to rest on my neck. "Oh!" She giggled. "I guess I don’t need to ask after all."Blushing ferociously, I lifted my fingers to my still-tender neck. Fuck, this was about as bad as walking around pregnant. It just screamed that I just had sex, especially since most wolves make it a habit to mark each other during intimacy."Why were you looking for her?" Travis asked, drawing Kim’s knowing eyes away from me. "You seemed to be in a hurry; was it important?""Her father wanted to
[Marissa’s POV]My heart beat a mile a minute as Travis opened his mouth and extended his canines. Despite being scared shitless about this whole thing, I wasn’t about to back down. This was what I wanted. He was what I wanted and I had already wasted enough of our time.Leaning forward, Travis let his teeth glide against my skin while suddenly wrapping his arms around me."W-what are you doing?" I gasped when one of his hands slid down between my legs. "How is this marking?""You’re too tense." Travis explained, sliding his fingers between my folds and beginning to gently rub. "Loosen up, otherwise you will only remember this as something painful instead of what it actually is."Whimpering, I nodded while Travis pulled me closer to him so my back was against his chest. While his fingers continued to slowly work me, his other hand found my breast. Sliding my nipple between his fingers, he began to knead and tweak."Oh…goddess," I moaned, letting my eyes flutter closed. "That feels so
[Travis’s POV]I sat quietly as Marissa let out all the emotions she was feeling. It killed me to see her like that and know that there was literally nothing I could do.In a way, I understood how she felt since I lost my mother too, but I was so much younger than her and didn’t have the opportunity to spend as much time with her as she did."Travis," Marissa murmured, tightening her hold on me."What is it?" I asked."I want you."Confusion rolled through me as I felt the desire that was beginning to build up in her. However, I couldn’t find it in me to refuse her request. If anything, this was an act of desperation to forget what was happening, and who was I to deny her?Nodding, I quickly scooped her into my arms and made my way towards our room, all the while ignoring the curious gazes that were burning holes in my back.Once we were inside, I locked the door and made my way towards the bedroom, only stopping long enough to kick off my shoes."Are you sure about this?" I asked aft
