"One! Two! Three! Again! One! Two! You are bad at this, huh?" Anders commented as he looked at the boy who had just fallen on the ground.

"The moves are too complicated. I also don't understand why I need to learn dancing," Sirius replied while patting his clothes in a try to remove the dust from them.

"It's not just dancing, I told you. These are exercises that will strengthen your body, giving you at the same time flexibility. Watch!" Anders said and took a fighting stance. He first punched the air with a force that was so strong that it even created a sound. He bent down next, making a sidekick and rolling backward over his shoulder before standing back to his feet, all these in a few seconds.

"The proficiency to move your body in whatever means you want to is essential in battle," he continued with a proud expression.

"Wow! That was amazing! You look stronger than Ajamu," Sirius couldn't help than remark with admiration.

"Haha, you are underestimating Ajamu too much. He might fall shorts in technique, but that's because he is younger than me three years. In terms of power, I dare to say he is more powerful than me at his age. If he fixes his mentality, he'll become a terrifying warrior one day."

"It seems that he was truly holding back that day..."

Looking at the boy lowering his head, depressed, Anders approached, putting his hand on his shoulder.

"It's true that as you are now, you stand no chance against him. However, as long as you haven't reached your limits, you have not right to lose hope."

"These are quite wise words. From whom did you steal them?"

"You brat!" Anders shouted with a laugh, punching him softly.

"Although you are right. It's a saying of our tribe."

"I see... In other words, success is not final; failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts, right?" Sirius suddenly said with realization, having received enlightenment.

"Wow! Don't tell me that you just thought of that?"

"Who knows?" The boy answered with a mysterious smile. Naturally, these weren't his words. He had just quoted Winston Churchill.

"You boys seem to have fun. I hope you don't neglect your training!" The boys had to stop joking, though, when the Chief entered the courtyard. At his side was standing Sarah, who was holding in her hands a wooden tray with cups filled with water.

"No, father. I was only teaching him the Dragon Dance."

"Oh? How is he?" The man asked while looking at Sirius with interest.

"Well... It might take some time for him to learn it?"

"Haha! What did you expect, just because you and Ajamu are geniuses, you think everyone can do it in his first time too?" Seeing that Anders didn't know how to answer, the man began to laugh.

"Here, take this, please!" Sarah said with a soft voice as she gave one of the cups to Sirius.

"Thank you," Sirius, without shyness, enjoyed the fresh cold water with a big smile. It was just what he needed on this warm day, especially in compound with the intensive training he had until now.

"I'll bring you more," receiving the cup while blushing, the girl left in a rush.

"She seems to like you. I haven't promised her to anyone yet, what do you think? Are you interested?"

"You... You read too much. We only met a few days ago," Sirius replied timidly.

"Haha, why not? I think you would make a good pair," the Chief couldn't stop his intrigue to tease him, upon seeing him behave shy.

"No... And don't treat her like an object. What she'll do in her life is her own decision," the boy retorted, not being able to restrain his irritation. He had noticed before how the people here discriminated against women, a kind of treatment he couldn't accept, nor he wanted to.

"Shut up, Astar! Father, I apologize for him, he doesn't know what he says," Anders hurriedly kneeled, his face pale.

"Stop, idiot! Have you forgotten my teachings? A Dragon from our tribe is never allowed to kneel to anyone," the Chief reprimanded him angrily before turning his attention to Sirius. His expressionless face truly scared the boy, making him regret his recklessness. The person in front of him wasn't anymore the kind man who had taken over his training. It was the sole leader of the tribe, the most influential person here after the Great Shaman.

"Do you know what is the punishment of disrespecting the Chief of the tribe?" His deafening voice made the boy feel like the time had stopped. Every second that passed seemed like an eternity, while an unbearable feeling of nervousness started to overwhelm him.

"It's death! That is how much power my position holds. Not even the Great Shaman would go against that decision. Take this lesson to your heart, and be more careful next time."

"Wha... No, I sincerely thank you for your mercy," Sirius quickly restrained his fluster, before bowing respectfully.

"Good!" The man nodded while his expression began to soften.

"I know that you came from a different place and that there will be times it will be difficult for you to fall in line with how things are in the tribe. I won't ask you to change your thinking, but I'll demand from you to at least learn how to adapt to our lifestyle, even if you disagree with it. That is also a kind of training for you. If you want to change what you don't like, do it in a way that aligns with our laws."

"Thank you for your kindness, Chief. I am sorry for being impolite," Sirius thanked him again while apologizing for his behavior, but not for his ideals. That was the one thing he would stand firm on no matter what.

"I-Is everything alright?" At this point, even Sarah had returned, holding the cup with the water. She was baffled upon witnessing the tense atmosphere. What could have happened in the several minutes she had left?

"Haha, don't worry. I was only educating the younger generation. I have to go. These geezers will be coming at any time now."

"The Elders?" Anders asked. He already knew they would visit today. It was the main reason why they trained alone today.

"Yes... Now that I think about it, I haven't told you the reason yet, have I? It seems that the Tiger tribe will visit us in two months. You know what that means, right? I expect a lot from you. Ah! And Astar! Don't think that you have escaped from that proposal I gave you earlier. We'll talk about it again when I have time. As for your punishment... How many laps did you do today?"

"S-Six," Sirius answered, terrified.

"Do another six, then. Anders, make sure he'll do them all. Don't help him this time, even if it takes all night for him to finish."

"Yes, father."

"Good!" The Chief left happily.

Is this how he shows forgiveness? How is this different from a death sentence? The boy truly felt despair.

"Sigh! You are so lucky. If you had said these words in the presence of others of the tribe, no one would be able to save you. Be careful next time! I don't think I'll be able to handle the anxiousness again," Anders commented with a sigh. Wasn't that guy supposed to be smart? Why couldn't he see it?

"Thank you, Anders. Making you kneel, I'll never be able to apologize enough. I am sorry!" Sirius shouted with his head lowered. He would never forget how the boy begged for him; the remorse would haunt him for the rest of his life.

"Forget it! As long as you learned your lesson, it's alright. You will be my brother-in-law, after all," Anders joked with a smile.

"B-Brother-in-law? W-What?" Unfortunately, he forgot that there was and another person here. Sarah, who couldn't comprehend the situation, dropped by mistake the cup down.

...

...

"So, you are the one who'll be my husband?" The girl asked timidly.

"It's not decided yet. I'll do my best to persuade your father, don't worry. You should marry the one you want to," Sirius said seriously. He didn't want her to misunderstand his intentions and hate him.

"Hehe, so that's how it is. I see!"

"You understand, right?"

"Eh? Ah, yes! Don't worry! Hehe!"

The boy couldn't understand why she was giggling like that, but since he had cleared his position, everything was fine.

"How is he smart? I only see an idiot. Am I the one who has a problem?"

"Is everything alright?" Sirius, who could hear some mutters turned his attention to Anders.

"No! It's nothing!"

"By the way... What did Chief mean when he said that he has expectations from you?"

"Ah, you are talking about the Tiger tribe's visit," the boy's expression became serious.

"It's a custom here when a tribe pays a visit to hold a competition."

"Competition?"

"Yes, a competition among the younger generation. A fight for our tribe's prestige and honor!"

Not only he didn't like fighting, but he also knew he couldn't contend with other people as he was now."Of course not. You haven't even done your awaking day yet. How can you win against others? The people of the Tiger tribe may not be as strong as us, but they are far from weaklings.""I am not a weakling. It is your power that is supernatural.""Haha, it's because we follow the path of the warrior," Anders commented with a laugh."I-I am sure that Astar will also become strong one day. He is the most determined person I have ever seen!" Sarah suddenly said, having awakened from her daydreaming."It's true that he is not your average person. I have never seen someone as desperate as you. That day is still giving me chills when I think about it," Anders also seemed to agree with the girl, recalling the boy

"Are you alright, boy? Wake up! Do you hear me? Wake up!"The boy slowly opened his eyes as bright rays of light welcomed him. How long had he been dreaming? It was a long nightmare, almost eternal. He was alone, running desperately in the darkness. Everyone was dead. Only he had remained. The sole survivor in a ruined world. Was it a nightmare, though, or the precognition of a possible future? He didn't care. He already knew what destiny held for him, an inescapable trap he couldn't avoid."Did you finally wake up? You like to take your time, eh?"Who was that? The boy turned his head toward the voice, scared, facing the woman who was staring at him. She had short gray hair and a pair of big round eyes. Although her face was young, its harshness disclosed the struggles and the suffering she had incurred, making her look older. It was her! The woman he had tried to help! So, she was alright! He said with a stern voice and gestured to the Great Shaman to follow him.The two men entered the house, whose decoration was simple, having inside only the bare necessities. If there was something that was sticking out, it was the countless heads of beasts that decorated the walls of the building, trophies the Chief had earned during his hunting days."It's been a while, Great Shaman," Juno, who had just got out of the kitchen, lowered her head respectfully."Nice to see you again, Juno. Every time I see you, you look more beautiful.""Don't flirt with my wife, old man. Have some consideration of your age," the Chief commented w

"How many laps you think you'll make today?""All of the ten," Sirius's voice contained confidence this time. He was running like there would be no tomorrow the past two weeks. Today, he truly felt he would finally achieve his personal goal."Where is Ajamu, by the way? I haven't seen him today," the boy wondered. He would see him almost every morning, but because he usually finished far too sooner than them, the two of them rarely talked to each other. However, it was the first time he didn't see him at all the whole day."He woke up unusually early today. Having finished with his training, he went somewhere together with his friends. Why? Did you miss him?" Anders asked while carrying a mocking smile."Yes! As much as he misses me every day," Sirius replied ironically. The two of them were incompatible, like water and fire. The only reason they conversed sometimes was that Ajamu wanted periodically to mock him during the training. Luck

"Look! It's him! The boy who slew the beast!""He is so skinny! How did he do it?""Hey, Astar! Come! I have just collected some fruit. You want some?"Sirius wanted to run away as much quickly as he could. On his way to the Chief's house, the villagers would often detect him during their works, cheering him with loud voices, making the poor boy want to hide in some dark corner. He didn't enjoy being the center of attention. The embarrassment wouldn't allow him even to raise his head to look straight. Although it had become a part of his everyday routine since that incident, he couldn't become used to it, despite the fact it had already been a week. It was not that he wasn't proud of his accomplishment, though. He had managed to achieve something similar to David's feat when he killed Goliath. No, his might have been even more formidable. He was only a kid, after all, neither a soldier nor a fighter. However, he still won against a beast

  • The Brightest Star   Returning to the Forest

Sirius was standing still under the bright sun with his eyes closed. His senses sharpened as he began regulating his breathing. The calming song of the cicadas became trenchant; the fresh air of the bush revitalized his mind. The more the boy immersed himself in that addictive feeling of peacefulness, the more he felt distanced from reality. And then his eyes suddenly opened. They were bright, like they were shimmering stars in the dark sky. Sirius took a step forward and punched the air hard and fast. Again and again, his attacks were carrying vivid emotions he had forgotten for a long time. He jumped back as if he wanted to avoid some unseen strike and raised his knee, getting himself into a defensive stance. Although the boy seemed to fight some non-existent enemy pointlessly, Sirius's moves were intense, his face already filled with drops of sweat."How is it?"The boy turned his head to face the girl who had just talked to him. She had long black hair

"Maybe I should explore the area a little?" Sirius muttered as he watched the man disappearing into the darkness. Waiting alone in the wild was too nerve-wracking for the boy who had just experienced a forest's dangers first-hand. Since he had to be patient anyway, Sirius thought it would be better to listen to the man's advice and walk around the place. His eyes scrutinized the surroundings excitedly as if they were trying to engrave the landscape to the boy's memory. Sirius wondered how great was the size of the forest that seemed to spread infinitely. If a forest was so big, how vast was the sea that surrounded the island, then? Despite the fact he had been here for a year, he realized he was living until now in a microcosm, ignorant of the new world he had found himself in. The boy kept on daydreaming while admiring the sight, forgetting about the former worries that were bothering him previously. Unfortunately, an abrupt sound coming from some bushes, similar to on

Considering that almost the whole village had assembled at one particular place, one had to imagine how especially eye-catching Sirius's and Nerida's performance truly was. And despite the various rumors that were secretly circulating among the tribe's members, not a single person wasn't caught off guard by their sudden display of affection, whether that person was someone overfamiliar with their circumstances like Anders or someone who had no idea what the hell was happening like the Tiger Tribe's Chief, Skar, whose jaw had fallen to the ground. "Oi, old hag, am I dreaming? Isn't that over there my son's bride-to-be with another kid arm in arm?" The diminutive man with the long silver hair whispered to the aged woman beside him in a low voice. The ugly expression on his face, however, betrayed the vexation he genuinely felt. "Are they trying to provoke us? They should be aware of our visit's purpose. I have a bad feeling about this," the woman muttered,

  • The Brightest Star   Meeting(1)

"You are becoming bolder and bolder these days. Have you forgotten you are still a weakling?" Ajamu, from the very beginning, was a bad-tempered and arrogant person who wouldn't shrink off anyone's challenge, much less Sirius's, who he still looked down on. Although he had to admit that Sirius had proved to be surprisingly resourceful in a crisis and that his character had also shown a little promise, that was all, in the end. Except for his luck, his overall ability remained laughable. How could he accept such a person talking back to him like an equal? Had he not saved his life, Ajamu wouldn't just reply in the form of words. Sirius, however, ignored his rival's poisonous remarks. In the first place, the boy hadn't meant to antagonize Ajamu. He couldn't have even if he wanted to. He knew, after all, his own place. How weaker he truly was compared to his peers. This was a world with superhuman freaks that could move mountains with their hands. Sirius, in

"Do you like this book?" The woman asked teasingly as she watched with affection at the child holding a huge historical textbook in his little hands. The spectacle of the child reading attentively with a serious expression like he was some kind of scholar was such an amusing and charming image, she thought with a smile. In the end, she couldn't contain herself after being exposed to such cuteness and hugged the bewildered boy from behind before he even had the chance to give her an answer."I thought you would prefer mathematics or physics, but you were actually hooked on history," she commented with surprise as she casually took a peek at the book's contents."I like them more, but I don't have any interest in them," Sirius replied with relief when he managed to retain the book as it had almost slipped from his hands because of the woman's rapid actions."Why not? If anything else, science is the most reliable method humanity has used to

"Please, raise your head! It was just a dispute among children, nothing for an adult to worry about," the boy hurriedly said in shock. The image of a man bowing his head to a child was an embarrassing spectacle, a humiliation that could stain the warrior's reputation considering the importance the villagers were attaching to their honor's preservation."You are the savior of my children. Apologizing for their rude behavior is the least I can do as their father," the man stubbornly continued, as if his words were an indisputable fact.He was a person worthy of being respected, Sirius inwardly thought. Despite being a man of a high position in the village, he didn't hesitate to apologize to him in person, even though he had done nothing wrong, only because he felt he had to do so for the sake of his children. In truth, Drayce's and Melly's attitude towards him wouldn't even be considered blamable in the village's society. He only had himself to blame for not

Sirius leisurely walked around the village in thought, the Great Shaman's words still echoing inside his mind."Beasts born by magic? Isn't magic just another form of energy? How can it create new lifeforms?""I don't know the answer. There are many mysteries in the world we can't explain. Imagine this, however. Our ancestor and father, the Dragon God, is supposed to be a being that didn't come to this world naturally but was born by magic. Of course, I don't mean to tell you that all beings born by magic have equivalent power to our father's, most of them are not even intelligent creatures, but some of them can be quite terrifying. Even I might not stand a chance against them. That's why places with a lot of magic energy can be perilous if you are not familiar with them. The forest surrounding our village is also like that."'I don't understand why I am so surprised. This world already has plenty of things that could be considered

  • The Brightest Star   Demon Species

For Sirius, the next several days had been way too exhausting. Because of his injuries, the boy had been forced to neglect his training for more than two weeks. No sooner had his body started to get used to the daily exercise than he encountered Apollyon. Sirius really wanted to express his frustration somehow. He felt as if his whole progress had regressed to zero. And the worst thing of all was the insufferable boredom of training alone. Unfortunately, there was nothing he could do about this. As Anders and Nerida had to prepare for the sparring competition with the Tiger Tribe, they were training these days singly. All the people who would participate in the competition were training feverishly, with Sirius being the only person at his age that didn't really have anything to do. Luckily, Sarah would sometimes join him when she finished her chores early, but as she was also busy helping the village's women organize the welcoming feast, the two barely spent any time together. At le

  • The Brightest Star   Tiger tribe(2)

Dragon Island's forest had always been a place filled with numerous dangers. Although the area surrounding the village could be considered safe thanks to the Dragon Tribe's warriors, even someone with their strength wouldn't venture deep into the forest without making extensive preparations first. Someone had to be strong to survive in that kind of place. Plenty of formidable beasts existed on the island, some of them being so powerful that not even the Great Shaman or the Chief would dare to provoke unless they had no choice. That was why the forest had a rule that all the island's lifeforms were following regardless of their species or strength in order to cross the forest as more peacefully as they could: Move like a ghost, make as little noise as you can."This forest is annoying as always," a diminutive man with long silver hair muttered with annoyance as he pulled his sword from a wolf lying down near his feet. Since the battle's sound kept on echoing from b

"That's why I want to avoid any possibility of being involved with that guy," Sarah looked with a pleading expression at the boy, knowing her request was quite excessive. Although she knew that even without the boy's help, her father would probably refuse the tiger tribe's proposal anyhow, she didn't want to take a risk. She wanted to limit the possibility of any mishap's appearance, or the anxiety wouldn't allow her to sleep peacefully in the nights. There were also some selfish desires mixed behind her request, but Sarah judged the boy didn't need to know about them. Although Sirius's words had appeased the worries in her heart about his and Nerida's close relationship, it wouldn't be a bad idea to exploit the situation to discourage any annoying insects that might have strange intentions about the boy. Not to mention that her chances of getting closer to him would greatly improve if she stabilized her position as his fiancee."We are bound to be engaged

Sirius's surprise was genuine and not for an unreasonable reason. Despite meeting with the girl regularly, the boy didn't remember doing anything remarkable that could induce Sarah's romantic feelings. It wouldn't be false to say that the two of them barely chatted at all during his visits to her house. Unless it was what the people call ''love at first sight"?The boy shook his head instinctively upon thinking this. He hardly had any commendable assets compared to the boys at his age. He was weak and timid, completely different from the warrior's paragon idolized in the village. As for his external appearance... Well, after gaining some weight and muscle, his looks had visibly improved. However, if he were to stand beside someone like Ajamu or Anders that looked like the reincarnations of heroes from fairy tales, he would be glad if he would be labeled as just average. If only I were taller,he thought with a pained smile.
