The boy was impatient to hear that distinct melancholic music from the adjacent room, the cathartic melody that was offering him temporary shelter from the unbearable loneliness in the nights. He kept waiting as the minutes passed, staring at the darkness, negotiating with himself if he should stand up and find the reason for the delay. However, he was afraid of the darkness. He was afraid of how it devoured the light, how easy it would be to swallow someone as insignificant as him. That dominating silence that made him feel like he was alone in the world, though, was even more terrifying, it was his worst nightmare. Not able to endure the waiting anymore, he steeled himself and headed towards the room. He was hesitant when he approached the door of his neighbor as he had been cautious about the woman living there. She was a mysterious person, unsociable, always carrying a cold expression and staying alone without giving any signs of life all day. The boy took a deep breath and knocked, but he didn't receive any answer. Realizing that something was wrong, he tried opening the door, which was surprisingly unlocked. A miserable room which conformed with the state of the building from concrete they were currently in welcomed him, but because of the thick darkness inside, he couldn't still find the woman. Step after step, he felt his leg to prod something, turning his attention to the floor. The boy bent down and slowly used his hand to find what was there...

...

...

The bustle around him woke up Sirius from his drowsiness. The spring wind that was blowing through his hair, the soft rustle of the leaves around him, that new feeling of tranquility had been the most excellent lullaby for him. He had lied down on the grass, gazing at the passing clouds, and before he knew it, he had already been in the world of dreams. He believed that if the children around him weren't making so much noise, he could enjoy the whole noon idly like that.

The children's attention also seemed to be on him. They were staring at him, doubtful of what to do, arguing between them for what to decide.

One of the boys didn't seem to like him, Sirius thought, recognizing the hostility in his eyes, unlike the girl that was shouting at the boy while pointing her finger at himself.  As he was considering if he should interfere, the boy seemed not to be able to handle his irritation anymore, gesturing at the gang to leave, leaving the girl alone. It was the first time Sirius experienced such unfriendliness since coming to this world, but the boy wasn't sad; he was too familiar with being treated with coldness and resentment. What perplexed him, though, was the girl's reaction of stomping her legs on the ground and glaring at him like he had done something terrible to her. She even started shouting again, alas pointlessly, as Sirius couldn't understand anything she said at all.

Being forced to listen to her tantrum and not even making sense of why she was so angry with him, Sirius thought that it might have been better to follow the others even if he was unwanted. Fortunately, upon detecting the empty gaze in the boy's eyes, the girl seemed to calm down while the tone of her voice became softer. She seemed to ask him a question, but Sirius could only shake his head, indicating he couldn't understand her. However, not only the girl didn't become depressed upon seeing his reaction; her expression brightened instead.

"Nerida!" She suddenly said with a smile, pointing with her finger to herself.

It was just a simple word, but it was that word that broke through the boy's indifference as if it lightened his world. The language barrier seemed to collapse; the boy could hardly contain his enthusiasm as he replied with a loud voice.

"Sirius!"

...

...

Nerida was a girl half a head taller than Sirius with long blank hair and a captivating pair of green eyes. Nonetheless, she had the average height of the girls at her age, indicating how short Sirius was compared to his peers. Like the rest of villagers, she was also dark-skinned while the tattoos of two small dragons flying toward the skies were decorating her hands. Sirius had long been curious about these tattoos since everyone seemed to have at least one, and it would always be a dragon. Although there were sticking out differences like their size, the number one individual had on his body, or the way of the representation of the dragons, the boy was still curious about the meaning behind them. He started wondering if this mythological creature from his previous world existed here. Since even magic existed, after all, he wouldn't find it strange to discover beasts or monsters he had read in fairy tales before.

"Nerida, these dra-agons a-are?"

As Nerida and the Great Shaman had taken over on teaching him how to speak, Sirius would often proactively ask questions about the culture of his newfound home, their folkway, the way they were living. Unfortunately, since he wasn't proficient yet with the language, he would often miss important details, forcing him to repeat his questions over and over again. Thankfully, maybe it was because he was still a kid, his brain was like a sponge, absorbing every single detail he would notice, allowing him to quickly form a general idea about the mysterious place he had become part of. The answer was far from complicated, though. For the people here from the very beginning, things were simple. Their world consisted of five islands in which the four of them were creating a square around the fifth one. Four tribes were living to each one of these surrounding islands, with their tribe being on the East. That was it, end of the story. Of course, that was Sirius's simplified version after hearing some of their fairy tales and folk stories. His theory instead was that this was an unexplored land with existing continents somewhere in the ocean.

"You still talk like a baby," Nerida commented with a mocking smile before she continues.

"For our tribe, the mighty dragon is not only our God but also our father. Its blood is flowing through our veins, making us strong, unparalleled. The size and the number of our tattoos symbolize the hierarchy in our tribe. The purer bloodline, the more important you are here."

"How d-do you know who is important?"

"It's the awakening day, the day that destiny reveals itself in front of you, showing your path in the future."

"I-I don't understand..." Sirius replied with a melancholic smile. He couldn't accept empty words like destiny or fate. Only the circle of creation and destruction was unbreakable in everything, Sirius didn't have doubts that this rule applied to this world too.

"You are not only weak but also stupid," the girl commented with a sigh.

"T-Then, are you strong, Nerida?"

"Of course! I am the strongest among the other children in the tribe. I will become a great warrior one day, a mighty dragon flying towards the skies. Don't worry! I'll protect you from the others that look down on you." Nerida boasted, puffing up with pride.

"W-What about the others? They d-don't talk t-to you." Sirius wanted to ask her about her relations with the other children, remembering how she argued with them when she tried to defend him.

"Ajamu, that idiot! Even if he is weaker than me, his destiny is greater, more so since he is a boy. He is the leader. If he doesn't like you, no one has the right to like you too."

Didn't that mean that Nerida went against the hierarchy to defend him? Her actions moved Sirius. She even helped him to adapt faster to his new lifestyle.

"Nerida, you are kind!"

"Haha, of course, I am. Father always said that when you are powerful, you can be kind," she answered with a hearty laugh, his comment making her happy.

"If you are powerful, you can be kind?" The boy asked with doubt.

"Isn't it obvious? You can take care of others only when you can take care of yourself. This is the way of a dragon."

Sirius closed his eyes, trying to process her words. He could feel there was a deeper meaning behind them, but he didn't want to spend too much time overthinking things. He had after all his own answer.

"Then, I am definitely not a dragon. Because for me, only when you are kind, you have the right to be powerful."

That was his answer, an answer that originated from the tragic history of his previous world, witnessing the consequences personally when power was in the wrong hands.

It was getting dark, and Sirius knew that the Great Shaman would wait for him for dinner. He was about to bid goodbye to his friend and return, but her voice suddenly sounded, her tone emotional.

"You! You spoke normally!"

What is magic? A desire? A dream? Or maybe an illusion? Sirius had read many versions of stories about that fantastic power back on Earth, but it was undoubtedly a natural phenomenon in this place. He could feel that invisible energy from the very first time he arrived here, even detecting its existence in the air, in the water, in the ground."I know what you are thinking, but it doesn't exist everywhere, and the energy isn't inexhaustible either. You probably shouldn't have noticed yet since you haven't left the village, but when you enter someday inside the forest, you might feel that it starts to thin out. It is also possible to consume the entire magic of an area, though it should refill again soon. Although finding a place with no magic at all is rare, places where that energy is scarce still exist, so you should be careful and not depend on it wholeheartedly." The Great Shaman lectured the boy with a stern voice. He honestly didn't want Sirius to learn magic yet

  • The Brightest Star   A new day

A warm sensation, as well as the feeling of touching hair, the boy jerked up panicky from the floor with drops of cold sweat flowing from his forehead. He hurriedly left the room and returned, holding a lightened candle in his hand that brightened the room a little. A woman was lying face down at its center, surrounded by scattered opened books, a sight that almost made the boy drop his candle. She is alive, he thought as he checked her breathing, putting the candle on the floor and trying to raise her and put her on the bed. He was exhausted, though. Carrying the woman until the bed, he could hardly keep his footing, collapsing, in the end, on the bitterly cold floor. No! I have to get up!However, his body wouldn't listen to him. He was devoid of strength."I have to get up! I have to get up..." He kept on muttering as his eyelids began to close......."Wake up, sleepyhead! It's alread

  • The Brightest Star   A new beginning

It was around 490 BC when the Athenian army, aided by Plataea, blocked the numerous soldiers of the Persian Empire at Marathon. Later, it would be recognized as one of the most critical fights of ancient times. The first reason was that Athens' victory gave time for the Greeks to prepare for the imminent invasion of the Persians. Secondly, because if the Athenians hadn't won, then no one could have stopped this mighty army in the whole of Europe at that age. As the General of the Athenian army, Miltiades realized that they would win the fight during the battle. He assigned Pheidippides, one of his soldiers, to announce their victory to Athens. The same man was tasked with requesting Sparta's help, running around 250 kilometers in two days and then returning, adding another 40 kilometers to reach the battlefield from Athens. Although he was a professional long-distance runner, he died, in the end, from the exhaustion during his victory announcement to the magistrates in session. Insp

"One! Two! Three! Again! One! Two! You are bad at this, huh?" Anders commented as he looked at the boy who had just fallen on the ground."The moves are too complicated. I also don't understand why I need to learn dancing," Sirius replied while patting his clothes in a try to remove the dust from them."It's not just dancing, I told you. These are exercises that will strengthen your body, giving you at the same time flexibility. Watch!" Anders said and took a fighting stance. He first punched the air with a force that was so strong that it even created a sound. He bent down next, making a sidekick and rolling backward over his shoulder before standing back to his feet, all these in a few seconds."The proficiency to move your body in whatever means you want to is essential in battle," he continued with a proud expression."Wow! That was amazing! You look stronger than Ajamu," Sirius couldn't help than remark with admiration.

"I see... Does that mean that I'll have to participate?" Sirius's voice contained a little anxiousness as he said that. Not only he didn't like fighting, but he also knew he couldn't contend with other people as he was now."Of course not. You haven't even done your awaking day yet. How can you win against others? The people of the Tiger tribe may not be as strong as us, but they are far from weaklings.""I am not a weakling. It is your power that is supernatural.""Haha, it's because we follow the path of the warrior," Anders commented with a laugh."I-I am sure that Astar will also become strong one day. He is the most determined person I have ever seen!" Sarah suddenly said, having awakened from her daydreaming."It's true that he is not your average person. I have never seen someone as desperate as you. That day is still giving me chills when I think about it," Anders also seemed to agree with the girl, recalling the boy

"Are you alright, boy? Wake up! Do you hear me? Wake up!"The boy slowly opened his eyes as bright rays of light welcomed him. How long had he been dreaming? It was a long nightmare, almost eternal. He was alone, running desperately in the darkness. Everyone was dead. Only he had remained. The sole survivor in a ruined world. Was it a nightmare, though, or the precognition of a possible future? He didn't care. He already knew what destiny held for him, an inescapable trap he couldn't avoid."Did you finally wake up? You like to take your time, eh?"Who was that? The boy turned his head toward the voice, scared, facing the woman who was staring at him. She had short gray hair and a pair of big round eyes. Although her face was young, its harshness disclosed the struggles and the suffering she had incurred, making her look older. It was her! The woman he had tried to help! So, she was alright! However, the boy started to feel regret. Why d

He said with a stern voice and gestured to the Great Shaman to follow him.The two men entered the house, whose decoration was simple, having inside only the bare necessities. If there was something that was sticking out, it was the countless heads of beasts that decorated the walls of the building, trophies the Chief had earned during his hunting days."It's been a while, Great Shaman," Juno, who had just got out of the kitchen, lowered her head respectfully."Nice to see you again, Juno. Today, he truly felt he would finally achieve his personal goal."Where is Ajamu, by the way? I haven't seen him today," the boy wondered. He would see him almost every morning, but because he usually finished far too sooner than them, the two of them rarely talked to each other. However, it was the first time he didn't see him at all the whole day."He woke up unusually early today. Having finished with his training, he went somewhere together with his friends. Why? Did you miss him?" Anders asked while carrying a mocking smile."Yes! As much as he misses me every day," Sirius replied ironically. The two of them were incompatible, like water and fire. The only reason they conversed sometimes was that Ajamu wanted periodically to mock him during the training. Luck

Considering that almost the whole village had assembled at one particular place, one had to imagine how especially eye-catching Sirius's and Nerida's performance truly was. And despite the various rumors that were secretly circulating among the tribe's members, not a single person wasn't caught off guard by their sudden display of affection, whether that person was someone overfamiliar with their circumstances like Anders or someone who had no idea what the hell was happening like the Tiger Tribe's Chief, Skar, whose jaw had fallen to the ground. "Oi, old hag, am I dreaming? Isn't that over there my son's bride-to-be with another kid arm in arm?" The diminutive man with the long silver hair whispered to the aged woman beside him in a low voice. The ugly expression on his face, however, betrayed the vexation he genuinely felt. "Are they trying to provoke us? They should be aware of our visit's purpose. I have a bad feeling about this," the woman muttered,

  • The Brightest Star   Meeting(1)

"You are becoming bolder and bolder these days. Have you forgotten you are still a weakling?" Ajamu, from the very beginning, was a bad-tempered and arrogant person who wouldn't shrink off anyone's challenge, much less Sirius's, who he still looked down on. Although he had to admit that Sirius had proved to be surprisingly resourceful in a crisis and that his character had also shown a little promise, that was all, in the end. Except for his luck, his overall ability remained laughable. How could he accept such a person talking back to him like an equal? Had he not saved his life, Ajamu wouldn't just reply in the form of words. Sirius, however, ignored his rival's poisonous remarks. In the first place, the boy hadn't meant to antagonize Ajamu. He couldn't have even if he wanted to. He knew, after all, his own place. How weaker he truly was compared to his peers. This was a world with superhuman freaks that could move mountains with their hands. Sirius, in

"Do you like this book?" The woman asked teasingly as she watched with affection at the child holding a huge historical textbook in his little hands. The spectacle of the child reading attentively with a serious expression like he was some kind of scholar was such an amusing and charming image, she thought with a smile. In the end, she couldn't contain herself after being exposed to such cuteness and hugged the bewildered boy from behind before he even had the chance to give her an answer."I thought you would prefer mathematics or physics, but you were actually hooked on history," she commented with surprise as she casually took a peek at the book's contents."I like them more, but I don't have any interest in them," Sirius replied with relief when he managed to retain the book as it had almost slipped from his hands because of the woman's rapid actions."Why not? If anything else, science is the most reliable method humanity has used to

"Please, raise your head! It was just a dispute among children, nothing for an adult to worry about," the boy hurriedly said in shock. The image of a man bowing his head to a child was an embarrassing spectacle, a humiliation that could stain the warrior's reputation considering the importance the villagers were attaching to their honor's preservation."You are the savior of my children. Apologizing for their rude behavior is the least I can do as their father," the man stubbornly continued, as if his words were an indisputable fact.He was a person worthy of being respected, Sirius inwardly thought. Despite being a man of a high position in the village, he didn't hesitate to apologize to him in person, even though he had done nothing wrong, only because he felt he had to do so for the sake of his children. In truth, Drayce's and Melly's attitude towards him wouldn't even be considered blamable in the village's society. He only had himself to blame for not

Sirius leisurely walked around the village in thought, the Great Shaman's words still echoing inside his mind."Beasts born by magic? Isn't magic just another form of energy? How can it create new lifeforms?""I don't know the answer. There are many mysteries in the world we can't explain. Imagine this, however. Our ancestor and father, the Dragon God, is supposed to be a being that didn't come to this world naturally but was born by magic. Of course, I don't mean to tell you that all beings born by magic have equivalent power to our father's, most of them are not even intelligent creatures, but some of them can be quite terrifying. Even I might not stand a chance against them. That's why places with a lot of magic energy can be perilous if you are not familiar with them. The forest surrounding our village is also like that."'I don't understand why I am so surprised. This world already has plenty of things that could be considered

For Sirius, the next several days had been way too exhausting. Because of his injuries, the boy had been forced to neglect his training for more than two weeks. No sooner had his body started to get used to the daily exercise than he encountered Apollyon. Sirius really wanted to express his frustration somehow. He felt as if his whole progress had regressed to zero. And the worst thing of all was the insufferable boredom of training alone. Unfortunately, there was nothing he could do about this. As Anders and Nerida had to prepare for the sparring competition with the Tiger Tribe, they were training these days singly. All the people who would participate in the competition were training feverishly, with Sirius being the only person at his age that didn't really have anything to do. Luckily, Sarah would sometimes join him when she finished her chores early, but as she was also busy helping the village's women organize the welcoming feast, the two barely spent any time together. Dragon Island's forest had always been a place filled with numerous dangers. Although the area surrounding the village could be considered safe thanks to the Dragon Tribe's warriors, even someone with their strength wouldn't venture deep into the forest without making extensive preparations first. Someone had to be strong to survive in that kind of place. Plenty of formidable beasts existed on the island, some of them being so powerful that not even the Great Shaman or the Chief would dare to provoke unless they had no choice. That was why the forest had a rule that all the island's lifeforms were following regardless of their species or strength in order to cross the forest as more peacefully as they could: Move like a ghost, make as little noise as you can."This forest is annoying as always," a diminutive man with long silver hair muttered with annoyance as he pulled his sword from a wolf lying down near his feet. Although she knew that even without the boy's help, her father would probably refuse the tiger tribe's proposal anyhow, she didn't want to take a risk. She wanted to limit the possibility of any mishap's appearance, or the anxiety wouldn't allow her to sleep peacefully in the nights. There were also some selfish desires mixed behind her request, but Sarah judged the boy didn't need to know about them. Although Sirius's words had appeased the worries in her heart about his and Nerida's close relationship, it wouldn't be a bad idea to exploit the situation to discourage any annoying insects that might have strange intentions about the boy. Not to mention that her chances of getting closer to him would greatly improve if she stabilized her position as his fiancee."We are bound to be engaged

Sirius's surprise was genuine and not for an unreasonable reason. Despite meeting with the girl regularly, the boy didn't remember doing anything remarkable that could induce Sarah's romantic feelings. It wouldn't be false to say that the two of them barely chatted at all during his visits to her house. Unless it was what the people call ''love at first sight"?The boy shook his head instinctively upon thinking this. He hardly had any commendable assets compared to the boys at his age. He was weak and timid, completely different from the warrior's paragon idolized in the village. As for his external appearance... Well, after gaining some weight and muscle, his looks had visibly improved. However, if he were to stand beside someone like Ajamu or Anders that looked like the reincarnations of heroes from fairy tales, he would be glad if he would be labeled as just average. If only I were taller,he thought with a pained smile.
