Isabella stood with an unfriendly gaze. “Alright,” Isabella snapped, her voice sharp and demanding. “What the hell is going on?”
Lucy’s heart skipped a beat at the sight of Isabella. Isabella’s sudden entrance had shattered the fragile calm that had settled over the room, and now tension crackled in the air like electricity. Lucy sat up straighter, her eyes wide as she tried to gather her thoughts.
Marie was the first to react, her eyes narrowing as she shot Isabella a disapproving look. “Isabella, I don't… I mean.!” she stammered as she could not get her words together.
“Can someone please help her out?”Isabella interrupted, her voice rising. “What is she trying to say?” She demanded, turning to notice Lucy.
Katherine exchanged a glance with Lucy, who looked pale and exhausted, the weight of everything bearing down on her. But there was no avoiding it now. Isabella wasn’t going to leave until she had answers. And for the fact that she had come around before and met the door locked and now seeing them all inside the room was something that would need some explanation.
The room was thick with tension as Lucy sat still on the mattress while Marie and Katherine stood, their heads slightly bowed, unable to meet Isabella's piercing gaze. The air felt heavy, almost suffocating, as they avoided each other’s gaze, unsure of how to navigate the situation.
Isabella's eyes flicked from Marie to Katherine, then finally settled on Lucy as she expected a response from any of them. She could feel something was off with the silence that hung in the room and her instincts told her that whatever it was, it was significant. She let out a low chuckle, breaking the silence, as her eyes met Lucy’s. There was a defiance in Lucy’s eyes that intrigued her, but also made her suspicious.
“What’s going on? Would anyone tell me something?” Isabella’s voice was sharp, cutting through the tension like a knife. She looked directly at Lucy and Marie, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Where have you two been? I was here before, but your door was locked.”
Marie flinched at Isabella’s words, fear flashing in her eyes. She remembered the exact moment when Isabella had called out to them, and how she had chosen not to respond. She had to do it all because of Lucy's safety. She knew if she had answered Isabella's call, she would be bombarded with questions which she wasn't ready to answer and based on her terms with Lucy, it might have resulted in something not favorable. But now, faced with Isabella’s scrutiny, she felt unsure of herself. Her mind raced as she searched for an explanation that wouldn’t betray the truth, but every word that came to her mind felt inadequate.
Before Marie could muster a response, Isabella pressed on, her voice dripping with suspicion. “And why on earth would you lock the door? You never lock your door. What’s going on? This would be the last time I would ask a question without getting a response… and you know what I can do, right?”
Lucy's heart pounded in her chest as she sensed the rising tension. She knew she had to say something, anything, to diffuse the situation. She took a deep breath, forcing herself to speak. “Isabella… I wasn't okay and I'm just… getting better.”
Lucy's voice was weak, and her words didn’t carry the conviction she had hoped for. She could see the doubt in Isabella’s eyes, the way her gaze seemed to pierce right through her. But before Lucy could continue, Marie suddenly interrupted, her voice slightly shaky but determined.
“Lucy fainted,” Marie blurted out, her words coming out in a rush. “She’s been unconscious for almost a day, and we’ve been running around trying to keep her at bay. That was the reason the door was locked.” Marie took a pause and glanced at Isabella to notice the expression on her face. “I guess when you called out to me and Lucy, I wasn't around and Lucy was unconscious.”
Isabella raised an eyebrow, her skepticism clear and evident on her face. She tilted her head slightly, studying Marie’s expression, searching for any sign of deceit. It was hard for her to believe that was the whole story, especially given the secrecy that looked obvious from their silence and the locked door. “Lucy fainted?” Isabella giggled. “Running around?” she echoed, her tone flat, as if she was testing the words in her mouth. “Keeping her at bay?”
Marie bit her lip, feeling the weight of Isabella’s scrutiny. She had hoped that her explanation would be enough, but the doubt in Isabella’s voice made her uneasy. She glanced at Lucy, who was still sitting on the mattress, her face pale and drawn. Lucy met her gaze, silently urging her to stay strong, but the unspoken plea in Lucy’s eyes only made Marie feel more anxious.
Isabella’s gaze shifted back again to Lucy, her eyes narrowing. “You expect me to believe that you fainted… for almost a day and had woken up not quite long? And now you're resting? And that’s why the door was locked?” She didn’t wait for an answer, her frustration evident. “This doesn’t add up, Lucy, Marie… don't think you can make a fool of me.”
Katherine, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up, her voice calm but firm. “Isabella, we’re all concerned about Lucy’s health. She’s been through a lot, and she needed rest. That’s all there is to it.”
Isabella turned her gaze to Katherine, her eyes narrowing further. “And you expect me to believe that too? There’s more to this, and you know it. I can see it in your eyes. All of you are hiding something.”
Lucy felt her pulse quicken, panic rising in her chest. She could feel the weight of Isabella’s accusations pressing down on her, and she knew that they were skating on thin ice. She had to think quickly, to find a way to calm Isabella’s suspicions before things got out of hand.
“We’re not hiding anything, Isabella,” Lucy said, her voice trembling slightly. “I fainted and I just needed some time to recover. That’s all.”
But Isabella wasn’t convinced. She crossed her arms, her eyes never leaving Lucy’s. “I don’t believe you,” she said bluntly. “I don’t believe any of you. There’s something you’re not telling me, and if you all don't give me an answer, you will suffer the consequences.”
The room fell into a tense silence, each of the women feeling the pressure of Isabella’s words. Lucy felt a wave of exhaustion wash over her, her body heavy and weak. She knew that Isabella wasn’t going to let this go, and that they were running out of time to come up with a believable explanation.
“Mistress, it's true… you know I've always done everything you told me and I've always followed your order… why would I lie now… Lucy fainted and just recovered.” Marie went on her knees and slightly bowed her head.
Isabella burst into laughter, her voice echoing through the room as she clapped her hands in mock amusement. "Lucy fainted?" she repeated, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, Marie, you said that before and that’s rich! What a story."
Marie’s face paled, her nerves fraying at the edges as she watched Isabella laugh. She exchanged a worried glance with Katherine, who kept her expression steady, though a flicker of irritation crossed her eyes. Lucy, sat still on the mattress, tightened her grip on the sheets, her body tense as she waited for Isabella’s laughter to subside.
But as Isabella’s laughter began to fade, she noticed the serious expressions on their faces. The room’s atmosphere had shifted, Isabella’s amusement quickly drained away, replaced by a cold silence. She frowned, her eyes darting from Lucy to Marie and then to Katherine, trying to decipher what she had missed.
Katherine took the opportunity to speak up again, her voice calm and measured. “It’s true, Isabella,” she said, her tone leaving no room for doubt. “Sir Ethan came to find me. He told me Lucy was unconscious, and that’s the only reason I’m here. You know my quarters are nowhere near theirs. I wouldn’t have come unless it was serious.”
Isabella’s eyes narrowed as she processed Katherine’s words. She knew she saw Ethan with Katherine’s and had been wondering why on earth would Ethan see Katherine privately. Even Katherine quarters were far from where Lucy and Marie , and that her presence here meant something significant had happened. Isabella crossed her arms, her mind racing as she pieced together everything she had observed. Ethan’s unusual concern, Marie’s silence when she called out earlier, Leo’s distracted demeanor—all of it began to make sense.
The puzzle was almost complete, but something still gnawed at her. Despite the story they had crafted, Isabella couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more beneath the surface, something they weren’t telling her. Her gaze lingered on Lucy, who was trying her best to remain calm, though the tension in her body betrayed her fear.
A twisted thought crossed Isabella’s mind, one that made her stomach churn with a dark satisfaction. *What if Lucy hadn’t survived?* The idea of Lucy out of the picture, no longer a complication in the delicate balance of power and relationships within the pack, was oddly appealing to her. It would have been easier, cleaner.
“Is that really it?” Isabella finally asked, her voice softer, almost thoughtful. She glanced at Lucy, her expression unreadable. “You fainted, and that’s why all of this happened?”
Lucy swallowed hard, trying to steady her voice. “Yes, Isabella. That’s all. I’m just… weak right now. But I’ll be fine.”
Isabella’s gaze hardened as she looked at Lucy. *Weak,* she thought. *Of course, you are. But why couldn’t you have stayed that way?* She sighed, her fingers drumming against her arm as she considered her next move. There was nothing she could do now, nothing she could say that wouldn’t come off as paranoid or spiteful. Yet, the seed of doubt had been planted, and she knew it would grow.
She finally let out a long breath, her demeanor shifting back to something more neutral. “Well, I hope you get better soon, Lucy,” she said, her voice carrying a faint hint of insincerity. “We can’t have you fainting again, can we?”
Katherine and Marie exchanged a quick glance, knowing Isabella was far from convinced but relieved that the confrontation seemed to be winding down. Lucy nodded weakly, forcing a small smile, but she could feel the coldness in Isabella’s words, the unspoken threat lingering in the air.
Isabella tilted her head, studying Lucy for a moment longer. “Just… take care of yourself, okay? I’m sure Ethan and Leo wouldn’t want anything bad happening to you.”
Lucy hesitated, her thoughts swirling. *Is she seriously telling me to take care of myself?* Lucy thought bitterly. *As if she actually cares.* She knew better than to trust Isabella’s sudden interest in her well-being. The resentment between them was no secret, fueled by Isabella’s jealousy over Leo’s attention toward her. The idea that Isabella would genuinely care about her condition was laughable.
But even as these thoughts churned within her, Lucy knew she had to respond. She couldn’t afford to let her true feelings show, not with Isabella’s calculating eyes fixed on her. Forcing herself to remain calm, Lucy finally nodded, though her voice was hollow. “Don’t worry about me, Isabella. I’ll be fine.”
Isabella chuckled softly, the sound more mocking than amused. “Good. You’ll need to be,” she said, her voice carrying a subtle edge. “Both you and Marie should get ready for tonight’s work. We don’t want anyone slacking off.”
*”What does she mean by getting ready for tonight's work?... Was she deaf and could not hear what we've been saying to her”* Lucy's stomach twisted at the command, the weight of it pressing down on her. She had barely regained consciousness, her body still weak, and now Isabella expected her to go back to work as if nothing had happened? *”How could she?”* Lucy wagged her head to get the thoughts off her mindIsabella’s gaze shifted to Katherine, who had been standing silently by Lucy’s side. “Katherine,” she said sharply, “are you done with your job?”Katherine hesitated only for a moment before tilting her head slightly, a gesture that signaled her answer. No, she wasn’t done, and at that instant Isabella’s impatience became palpable.“Then what are you still doing here?” Isabella snapped, her voice cold. “Get back to your post. Now.”Katherine’s response was immediate. She nodded quickly, her movements sharp with urgency, and without another word, she turned and left the room. The
Lucy stood, still frozen on the spot as she pressed on with her gaze on Leo. For a brief moment, the world seemed to narrow down to just the two of them, the distance between them feeling simultaneously too far and too close. The connection grew stronger as she watched him, like it's pulling her forward like an invisible thread connecting them. But within a split second , she wagged her head and grunted as Leo wasn’t alone. Just behind him, Ethan stood with his arms crossed, his expression unreadable. Their eyes met for a fleeting second, but Lucy looked away. Isabella was also there, her presence, a figure that portrayed resentment. She took a glance at Leo and had her thoughts *Why is he just standing there?* she wondered, her thoughts racing. *Why isn’t he asking about me? Does he even care?*Marie had told her that Leo had been the one to instruct Ethan to take care of her, to ensure her safety. She had clung to that thought in her moments of fear and uncertainty, believing that i
Leo and Ethan met with the guard on the way. The guard immediately bowed his head while Leo watched him. There was silence that hung amongst them, inciting great tension. Leo narrowed his thoughts, knowing he had been missing and instead of him working on the errand his Father had sent him, he was busy doing something else and the guard allocated to him would be wondering what had happened and where he had been. Leo sighed deeply but kept mute, knowing that the guard was already curious as to where he had been. The guard, still a bit uneasy from having lost sight of Leo earlier, broke the silence first."Leo, I searched everywhere for you, but you vanished. I was starting to worry," the guard said, his voice a mix of concern but relief, since he found him already.Leo glanced at the guard with a smirk, trying to lighten the mood. "I needed some air. Can’t have you following me everywhere, can I?" Leo shrugged and took a brief look at Ethan so he would give away some expression to sup
Lucy and Marie worked in silence, their brooms scraping the dust-covered floor of the room meant for Aiden. The air was thick with the scent of neglect, cobwebs clinging to the corners like the room had been forgotten for years. They swept and scrubbed, the grime gradually giving way to a cleaner, fresher space. The old wooden floors began to gleam under their efforts, and the room slowly transformed from a forgotten corner of the pack house into something worthy of the Lycan Prince.Lucy sighed, a loud whisper that echoed in the room. Marie nodded her head. “We're almost done,” she said with a rasped breath. Lucy smiled agreeing with Marie. “I really need a good night's sleep after this, not awaiting Aiden's arrival.” Lucy yawned, trying to cover her mouth with the back of her hand. Marie rushed to her in an attempt to shut her up. Lucy discontinued from yawning, her hand hung in the air as she furrowed her eyebrows trying to catch a glimpse of Marie's action. “Marie, are you okay
Isabella barged into the room, her presence immediately instilling fear. Instinctively, both Lucy and Marie scrambled to their feet, their hearts racing with a mixture of fear and surprise. Isabella ignored them both as her eyes caught the view of the room. Her eyes swept across the room, taking in the sight of their work. She nodded her head and clapped her hands slowly, a satisfied smirk played on her lips as she observed the clean and well swept room. “Well, well, well,” she drawled, her tone laced with a hint of mockery. “It seems you two have actually done something right for once.”Lucy and Marie exchanged a quick glance, both unsure of how to respond. They stood silently, waiting for whatever command Isabella would issue next. The tension in the room was palpable and Marie could feel her heart pounding in her chest. Marie brushed her shoulder against Lucy's. Lucy glanced at her as she noticed the gesture on Marie's face, a sign that tells her to bow her head. Lucy nodded but d
Lucy's feet came to an abrupt stop. There he was–Leo. He was walking down the hallway, dressed in a fitted black jacket and jeans towards Lucy. Lucy mused, and could only stare while Marie followed the direction of Lucy's eyes to see what had stopped her from moving. Lucy watched as Leo walked, his presence which seemed to command attention without effort as everyone bowed as he walked past them. His stride was confident, each step deliberate, exuding the natural authority he carried as the Alpha's son. The fitted black jacket he wore clung to his muscular frame, the fabric emphasizing the sharp lines of his broad shoulders and chest. The deep black color contrasted against his skin, highlighting his powerful build. His jeans fit him perfectly, completing the look that radiated a minor casual dominance and raw masculinity. His hair, dark and slightly tousled, fell effortlessly across his forehead, giving him an air of careless perfection. As Leo walked closer, time seemed to slow fo
Leo stood at the front of the main gate, his posture straight and commanding, as though he were a living statue carved from the stone of authority itself. His hands were clasped firmly behind his back, his eyes fixed on the approaching figure. Beside him was Ethan, who stood with an equally serious demeanor, his sharp eyes scanning the scene with a mixture of scrutiny and concern.Behind them also, a contingent of guards maintained their positions, their expressions betraying nothing but readiness. The air was tense with anticipation, each member of the pack aware of the significance of the visitor about to arrive.Isabella soon emerged from behind them, her presence purposeful. She stood at first on a spot but soon maneuvered to Leo side, her gaze immediately drawn to the distant figure on the horizon. As she took her place next to him, the space between them felt charged with unspoken emotions. Her heart fluttered nervously, a blend of excitement swirling within her. Her affection
Marie felt her breath hitch as her eyes landed on Aiden, her usual composure faltering. She had heard of Aiden's cruelty but seeing him in person was an entirely different experience. All she could notice was his striking presence. But it was his eyes that held Marie captive–icy blue and piercing, like the ocean under a winter sky. They were simultaneously cold and alluring, pulling her in despite the danger they seemed to promise.Marie turned to compose herself, reminding herself that she was here to serve Isabella, not to get lost in the presence of a man who was far beyond her reach. But even as she attempted to focus, her gaze kept drifting back to Aiden. He stood tall, exuding an effortless command that made everyone around him feel small. Marie had never seen anyone so perfectly put together, though she had always admired Leo but Aiden was entirely different. He was so naturally authoritative and she found herself caught between admiration and an unspoken yearning that she kn
The tension in the air was fierce even after the fight had come to an abrupt halt. Dust from the scuffle lingered in the breeze and the faint murmur of the dispersing crowd hummed in the air. Leo's hand was still stiffened in the air as he looked up. All focus shifted to the one who had stopped the fight. Alpha Eric stepped in the training ground, his presence commanding immediate attention. Eric strode forward with long, purposeful steps, his silver edge clock billowing slightly behind him. His guards flanked him, their expressions stoic and beside him walked Ethan. Ethan has been the one to deliver the news of the escalating fight. Ethan's eyes scanned the ground, his sharp gaW noting every detail, from the guards to the pack members.Leo straightened the moment he saw his father approach, wiping the sweat from his brow as he quickly stood to his full height. Aiden, however, didn't move right away. Sitting on the dusty ground, he tilted his head slightly, spitting blood to the sid
The training ground buzzed with tension, the air thick with anticipation as Lucy hurried down the dusty path, Marie trailing close behind her. The sun hung high, casting sharp shadows over the guards and the few pack members who had gathered to witness the spectacle. Lucy's heart pounded in her chest, her feet barely touching the ground as she weaved her way through the throne of armored figures.“Excuse us,” Marie muttered, pushing past a particularly burly guard.Lucy didn't stop, her eyes scanning the clearing until she caught sight of the center. A small crowd encircled the two figures at the heart of the commotion, the tension radiating off them like waves. She stepped forward, ignoring the murmurs around her, and found a spot just close enough to get a clear view. She barely noticed the guards muttering about their presence or Marie's standing slightly behind her. Her attention was fixed entirely on the two figures in the center.Aiden stood in a composed stance, his hands clas
The question struck Lucy like a blow and she stumbled under the weight of it—not physically but emotionally. Her breath hit her and she blinked rapidly, trying to compare herself. Love Leo? The words echoed in her mind, unwelcome and painful.Lucy stared at the ground, her grip tightening on her clothes on either side. She didn't answer immediately. Her thoughts were a mess, tumbling over each other in disarray. Why is she asking me this? Why now? And what am I supposed to say? After a long, tense silence, Lucy finally spoke, her voice measured but laced with bitterness. “Leo rejected me with his own mouth,” she said, each word carefully enunciated, “and he told me to forget about him… and that's what I did exactly. Or, how can you expect me to love someone that doesn't love me, huh?”Isabella raised an eyebrow, her expression a mix of skepticism and disbelief. She gestured with one hand, a small, sharp flick of her wrist, as if physically brushing aside Lucy's words. “You didn't answ
The sudden impact threw her off balance, causing a few clumps of dung to fall from the bowl. The heavy bowl wobbled precariously and she scrambled to steady it.“Oh no!” she gasped, her heart pounding. She set the bowl down hastily, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. Her gaze darted up, her breath catching in her throat as she took in the person she had bumped into.It was Aiden. He stood there, his piercing gaze fixed on her. His swift reflexes had saved him from most of the mess, but a smear of dung stained the sleeve of his dark shirt. He looked at it briefly, his expression unreadable, before his eyes shifted back to her.Lucy's fear spiked instantly, her pulse thundering in her ears. Her thoughts raced, chaotic and panicked. Why him? Of all people, why him?Aiden's eyes flicked to the bowl on the ground and back to her. His tone was calm, yet there was an undercurrent of authority. “Why are you carrying that by yourself?”His question was simple but it felt like a challenge.
The early days of the sun were faintly breaking through the cracks of the heavy curtains in Leo's room when he pushed open the door. The air inside was still, carrying the faint scent of cedarwood and smoke from the fireplace he hadn't lit in days. He exhaled heavily, shutting the door behind him and moved to the center of the room. He shrugged off his jacket, hanging it on the peg by the wall, before tugging his shirt over his head. The cool air kissed his bare skin, drawing out a soft sigh as he stretched his shoulders. His muscles ached from the night's relentless training—he’d spent hours in wolf form, rubbing and fighting to exhaust the emotions that had been clawing at him since yesterday. But the ache was nothing compared to the battle in his mind.Turning to grab a clean shirt, his eyes caught the faint rise and fall of a figure on his bed. He stilled, narrowing his eyes, his wolf instantly alert. It took only a moment for him to recognize the brown hair spilling over his pil
The words struck her like a blow. She felt her knees weaken momentarily, but she quickly steadied herself, her fingers curling into fists at her sides. How dare he? she thought, fury and disbelief tangling in her mind. He even has the audacity to call Lucy his mate right in front of me. Her composure wavered for only a moment before she regained her footing, glaring at Leo with newfound resolve. “And exactly are you planning to do that?” she shot back, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “She's a maid, Leo. She has no standing here. Why make you think you can claim her? Not when your father is here.”Leo didn't back down. If anything, her defiance only seemed to stoke the fire within him. He took another step forward, closing the distance between them. “Because I'm going to be Alpha soon,” he said, his voice low and commanding. “And when that happens, you'll see. I don't need your permission.”The determination in his voice sent a chill down Isabella's spine. She narrowed her eyes, stud
The heavy wooden door closed behind them with a low cream and Isabella found herself standing in the dim warmth of Leo's room. The space was simple yet deeply personal, an extension of its owner. The air was scented faintly with pine and leather, and the faint bluish light of the moon filtered in through the narrow window. Her eyes immediately fell on the intricate carvings etched into the walls—images of wolves mid-run, trees swaying and the crescent moon. Each one was unique, bearing the unmistakable mark of Leo's careful hand. She stepped closer to one of the larger drawings, tracing the grooves with her fingers. “You carved these yourself,” she murmured, her voice reverent.Leo, standing a few places behind her, crossed his arms over his chest and kept mute, his eyes following her movements closely.Isabella inhaled deeply, her eyes roaming the room. It had been so long since she'd last stood here. She took in the sturdy wooden bed, its frame hand-carved to match the alls, the sta
The hallways were long and the stone floors echoed with the sound of Lucy's soft footsteps as she wandered aimlessly, her mind lost in a haze of confusion and turmoil. Her thoughts kept circling back to the words Isabella had said, echoing in her head like a constant drumbeat.“Aiden's ruthless, cruel… he won't care about you. He's never cared about anyone…”Lucy's head throbbed with the weight of those words, the uncertainty about what lay ahead heavy in her chest. She could barely hold onto the fragments of her thoughts, let alone understand the difficulties that surrounded her.Her temperature had spiked again, and she felt dizzy but that was the least of her worries. She had to focus. I have to get a grip, she thought. I can't let this affect me…But before she could lose herself again, she heard her name—soft, yet urgent—calling out from behind her.“Lucy,” Marie's voice broke through the fog.Lucy didn't respond at first. She kept walking, one foot in front of the other, her min
Lucy blinked, looking up into Leo's familiar face. His eyes were sharp, but there was a flicker of concern beneath his furrowed brow.“Lucy,” he said, his tone softening. “Are you alright?”Her lips parted but no words came out. She felt his hands tightened slightly on her shoulders, anchoring her as she swayed, her gaze fixed on the ground. Her silence gnawed at him, but before he could press further, Ethan, who had been following closely behind, cleared his throat.“Leo,” he began, his voice low but insistent. “You can't be seen like this with her. Especially not by your father.”Leo tensed, nodding his head. “I know,” he replied curtly, glancing at Ethan.“Do you?” Ethan pressed, stepping closer. “Because if your father sees you—”“I said I know!” Leo snapped, his voice echoing down the corridor. He took a breath, his frustration barely contained.Ethan fell silent, his gaze flicking to Lucy, who was only staring but seemed oblivious to their exchange. He sighed. “I'm just trying t
