"Hello, Zack. Long time no see."
Mr. Walker, a man in his early sixties, looking immaculate in his striped suit, his grey-tinged hair stylishly pushed back, walked in, then looked around at the tiny storage that was supposed to be Zack's office. "As if finding you wasn't hard enough, I come to this," Mr. Walker said, looking at Zack. "What do I say? Welcome to my humble office," Zack said plainly. "Humble would be a compliment," Mr. Walker grimaced. "Even though you are starting from scratch, I must say that this place is kind of far-fetched. Does someone have a grudge against you or something?" "Please state your business here. As you can see, I have a lot going on for me right now." "Ouch!" Mr. Walker faked offense. "Given our history, you must not be happy to see me here. But as someone who has been your mentor for years and only wishes the best for you, I must say that this is an embarrassment. But I guess you can't be lucky twice." "I doubt. You must be happy to see me like this." "Come on, Zack. We were almost family." "And you made sure that didn't happen," Zack said bitterly. "I am sorry things happened that way. But I can only wish the best for Madeline. Aren't you going to ask about her?" "I don't see no need, since I don't have anything tying me to her." "Madeline is fine. Doing her PhD at the moment. She is currently in Thailand on a project and will be back soon. I'm sure she will be happy to know that you are back. But that aside. I just came to tell you that I am rooting for you. And good luck at the meeting," Mr. Walker said before leaving. Zack let out a sigh, relieved that he no longer had to share the same space with the man. And to think that Mr. Walker was someone he looked up to and admired for a long time. Zack checked the time on his wristwatch. It was 9:10am, which left him only about forty minutes to go through the synopsis and less than ten minutes to get there on time. Even though it was something Zack was good at once, he couldn't help but feel helpless to be suddenly reintroduced back to that kind of work again, but steadily, started to get the hang of it. * Zack arrived at the meeting area right on time when everyone was getting settled. The meeting included the executives, high position holders and major shareholders. When he entered the office, Zack was met with silence as everyone's eyes went towards him. Zack's eyes swept the entire room as he went to his seat and sat down. No one talked to him or tried to acknowledge him, which was so much different from how things used to be. Back when he was believed to be the heir, everyone would rush to introduce themselves and talk to him, trying to get on his good side. But now, for those who knew him, no one wanted to waste their time when he had nothing to offer. And for those who didn't know him, seeing the confident aura he exuded walking in, they turned to those beside them, asking for information only to be told he was no one important. Zack locked eyes with Mr. Porter, who quickly looked away. The man in his early forties who had always flattered and brown-nosed him, now ignored his entire presence. Just then, the doors opened and everyone looked towards it and right then, Chris walked in and the entire mood in the hall changed as everyone tried to get acknowledged by Chris. "Good morning ladies and gentlemen," Chris said charmingly. "Sorry I'm late, something held me up." "Good morning Mr. Vaughn." "Morning Mr. Vaughn." "How are you doing?" "I knew something was up," Mr. Porter laughed, clapping his hands. "Something was wrong with my watch. I came too early, apparently." "Oh, come on Porter," Chris walked over to him, clapping the man on the back. "I know you will always have my back," Chris added, and Mr. Porter looked pleased with himself. "You work too hard for this company," Mr. Sicily commented. "At this rate, you will start growing some gray hair sooner rather than later. You should think about settling down," Mrs. Hartley, an executive joked, making Chris laugh. "Come on Vanessa, I am still in my prime," Chris replied. "You really should consider getting yourself a partner. I am sure a lot of girls will line up just to have a chance," Mr. Sicily stated. "But our Chris isn't going to date just anyone. It has to be someone of his class," Mrs. Hartley stated. "Oh come on, you guys flatter me," Chris waved his hand to himself. Just then, his gaze fell on Zack, who was busy flipping through the file, still trying to get the hang of it. "Oh my god Zack!" Chris said almost excitedly. "You are here. I wasn't sure you were going to make it. I almost thought you would change your mind at the last minute and go back to your job at the restaurant," Chris smiled, walking over to Zack and standing beside his chair, putting his hand around Zack's chair. "You don't have to worry about me. Because I have already made up my mind," Zack said firmly. "That's too bad. I'm sure Mr. Alfred will miss you." "He would do just fine without me." "Then," Chris scrunched down so that his head was at level with Zack's, and then he said in a whispered tone. "Did you like your office this morning? I thought nothing would do you more good than a reality check." Zack put up a smile, surprising Chris. "And it did me a lot of good. It reminded me how much harder I needed to work. All thanks to you." "I am glad you liked it, Cous," Chris grimaced, before quickly masking it with a grin as he looked up at the rest of the people who were pretending not to observe them. "Everyone, have you met my cousin? This is Zack. I am not sure if anyone of you know him. He is sort of the Cinderella of our family," Chris boasted. Under the table, Zack clenched his fists, trying not to give Chris the satisfaction of reacting the way he wanted. "He is your cousin? No wonder he does look familiar," someone stated. "He is good-looking too." "He must be new here. I didn't know you had a cousin." "He must be a distant cousin then." "Actually," Chris said in a lower tone this time. "My cousin used to work here before me. But due to some personal crisis, he decided to have a taste of ordinary life, but rest assured, after five years, Zack is finally back with us." "No wonder we didn't know him." "Even though Zack is barely a manager at the moment, I humbly appeal to all of you, to please treat him kindly," Chris said, putting his hands over his heart for emphasis. "Oh come on Chris, you are too kind," Mr. Porter stated, wiping away fake tears. "Certainly we can do that much for him." "I am sure that your cousin is here," a voice spoke out, while looking straight into Zack's eyes, and it was none other than Mr. Weston, a strict man and someone Zack knew. "Can prove himself worthy of what you are asking." Chris was about to reply when the door opened and Mrs. Vaughn, the chairman of the Vaughn enterprises walked in, with Mr. Walker, the vice chairman right beside her. Chris quickly went back to his seat and sat down. "Morning everyone," Mrs. Vaughn greeted her, walking towards her seat. Mr. Walker pulled her seat for her, and after she sat down with a gentle 'thank you', Mr. Walker went to take his own seat. Mrs. Vaughn, her stern gaze turned towards everyone who had sat upright in their seats out of respect. "Sorry for coming a bit late. I wanted you all to familiarize yourselves with my grandson. Zack?"As the meeting went on, Zack listened attentively to what everyone had to say, mentally making notes. Everyone, including Chris, had a thing or two to say, and after an hour and a half, the meeting was finally concluded."Now before we go," Mrs. Vaughn brought everyone's attention to the sore topic once again. "As some of you here know, Zack once worked here, and he had such great potential, and that is why I didn't hesitate to bring him back. But the consequence of his past decision is that he only gets to start all over again. His presence here is merely formalities to introduce him back here. Some of you here have worked with him, and some of you have heard of him, I am sure. So what do you think about this old woman's decision?" Mrs. Vaughn said authoratively, although her last question made it sound like she was asking for their suggestion. The room was quiet for a second, with everyone processing her words and unsure how to attempt to answer her tricky question."How could we po
With John now gone, Zack finally settled down in his new, spacious and well-furnished office, with the windows overlooking the busy city. Not only were the computers and furniture latest, but the office even had a fridge containing all sorts of drinks, a coffee machine and then a snacks cabinet.Zack had just sat in his comfy chair when a knock came on the door, and he gave permission for the person to enter. The door opened and a young man walked in, seemingly in his early twenties, and he had a goofy smile on as he awkwardly walked towards Zack."And who might you be?" Zack asked the unfamiliar face."I am Nicolas Coleson and I will be your secretary slash assistant from today on," the guy introduced rather excitedly."You look too happy for someone who got assigned to work for someone like me," Zack noted."Well, even though you are a hit or miss, a college dropout like myself could never imagine I would get to the top so soon from being a mere clerk," Nick said, and Zack's mouth d
The sound of clicking heels resounded through the large office as she entered, and the smell of her perfume greeted the workers. Some of them turned their heads towards her, greeting her with polite smiles.Kimberly answered back with the same energy, feeling on top of the world.Dressed in a black leather skirt and red blouse that matched her red lipstick, Kimberly swayed her head to the right, her curly brown hair moving with the same motion.Satisfied with herself, Kim went to her seat as the head of the office and sat down and soon after, some of her team members started submitting their files.Kimberly collected the files and assured them that she would look over them. After that, she called some of the members who had already submitted their files and showed them what needed to be corrected and when to resubmit the files.Having finished doing that in two hours' time, Kim went through her desk, looking for a particular file but which was nowhere to be found."It has been two wee
At the office, Kimberly stared into space, her eyes bloodshot and barely blinking."Excuse me. Hey. Miss Wells? Are you alright? Boss," Noah called out to her, but even her favorite title was not enough to bring her out of her thoughts, until Noah banged on her desk and she almost jumped out of her seat, startled.Kimberly blinked before looking at Noah who was looking at her, concern clearly written on his face."Are you okay boss?" Noah asked once again."Oh yeah. I'm fine. Totally. Why do you ask?" Kimberly asked, staring at him."It's just that, I have been calling out to you for some time now. You look like you haven't slept a wink for the past week," Noah commented, and true to his word, Kimberly did look a bit disheveled. She no longer looked as neat as she used to be when she first became a manager."Oh, I've just been really busy is all," Kim shrugged it off. "I'm the boss here, and we've already sent our proposal to the best company out there. I'm just hoping they respond to
Rose's POVI woke up to the feel of fingers slowly running up and down my bare back. The light strokes sent chills down my spine and I could feel a hot breath over my spine. My head buried deep in my pillows, I didn't need to open my eyes to know who it was. It was none other than the guy I picked up last night."I know you are awake babe," he said in an alluring voice, which was followed by a hot breath fanning my ear. I raised my head and opened my eyes slowly, only to be greeted by the streaks of sunlight filling my room, making my head throb, and I shut them close as I sat up and rubbed my head with two fingers while I used the other hand to pull the sheets to my body, covering myself. The guy, whatever his name was, spoke again, bringing me back to the reality of my decision last night, which was a result of taking a few drinks."Good morning babe," he purred into my ears, and I could tell by his freshly sprayed cologne and minty breath that he was trying too hard. "Ready to go d
Third person POVZack placed his long legs on the coffee table, one on top of the other, as he pressed his phone. As Zack surfed through the internet reading the news about the market and stocks, mindlessly looking at what he deemed important to his person and scrolling over what he didn't need to concern himself about, especially gossip, one would easily mistake him for the owner of the fancy restaurant he was in and the staff room to be his personal office if not for the waiter's uniform that betrayed him.The uniform consisted of a white dress shirt, a black bow and black slacks. With his tall legs, slim waist, broad chest and styled but messy dark hair, one could mistake him for a model.Zack checked the time, and it was 6:50pm at the moment, meaning his break would end in about ten minutes. In two hours, he would be heading home after an eight-hour shift that started at 1pm. Zack checked the date on his phone and he let out a deep breath. Tomorrow would be his third anniversary w
Back in the lounge room, Chris handed Zack another towel which Zack used to rub his wet but now clean hair.Zack had taken a shower and changed out of his work clothes into simpler clothes, which consisted of a white tee and blue jeans."You will have to take a proper shower after getting home. I think it would take a few days for the smell to get off," Chris complained. "Who orders food like that anyway? Can you believe they made a soup out of garlic?""How am I supposed to continue working smelling like this? And I was hoping Emilia and I would get to eat dinner together ," Zack grunted in annoyance. He smelled the dampened towel which now smelled of garlic before throwing it on a nearby couch and, using his fingers, tussled his hair."I could never understand why people cheat on their spouses. Especially the ones they made vows to," Zack shook his head. "Because it's fun?" Chris grinned."It's my fault, the whole scene that was caused, and what my wife did to you." A voice came, ma
"Babe," she patted her boyfriend on the chest to bring him back to reality. Her boyfriend turned his head towards the door and saw Zack standing there in shock while Emilia hurried to cover herself up.His lips lifted into a slight smirk as he got off the bed and Zack caught it. "Looks like the boyfriend is here," he whistled, slowly getting off the bed and going for his clothes. Not only was he on top of his girlfriend in his own house. This man was definitely mocking him. At that moment, Zack's rage overwhelmed his feeling of betrayal, taking over all his senses. He didn't hear when Emilia called out to him as he headed towards the man who was buckling in his pants. The man did not notice and was only made aware of lackluster fury when a punch landed on his face. "Oh my god no! Zack, stop!" Emilia called out to him, but he didn't hear as he went in for another punch. "No, stop!" Emilia stopped him by holding onto his arm. She had already slipped on a dress."Stop doing this please.

But I guess you can't be lucky twice.""I doubt. You must be happy to see me like this.
Zack's POVI stood in front of the huge building, different emotions going through me.I remembered the time I came here as an intern, full of dreams and hopes and how diligently I worked, while making up my mind about the accomplishments I would strive for once I became a full-time employee. Then, of the time I came here fresh off after graduation in a suit and tie with well polished leather shoes and a briefcase. But now I stand in front of this building once again, and I am not sure what I want anymore. How has this place been after all these years? Is it right to come here at all?Chris turned to look at me with a smirk that expressed his calmness at the whole situation, making me realize that I was now the stranger here."Goodluck at the meeting Bro," Chris said with a salute before turning and sauntering into the building as if it was his home, most of the workers greeting him with a familiar smile as he passed by them, and he answered each one of them while acknowledging them.
Third-person POVZack woke up to the loud shrill of his alarm tone.Picking his phone up, he turned off the alarm before sitting up and wiping his face with his hands.Today, Monday has finally come. When Zack will be reintroduced by his grandmother to the company where he will be working in once again.Zack remembered Chris' words when he told him he was planning to resume work. Since then, they hadn't talked much, and in front of the family, the two would pretend as if everything was normal between them.Getting up from his bed, Zack went straight to the bathroom to do his morning routine, after which he brushed his teeth and took a shower.Coming out, Zack walked to his closet and came out wearing a black suit. He was about to start wearing his tie when a knock came on his door.Zack thought without a doubt that it would be his mother, but when he opened the door, he found his sister, Sawyer, instead."Sawyer, hey," Zack said awkwardly."Hi," the girl replied shyly. She was in her
"Hahaha," I found myself laughing instead saying a direct answer. It's not like I had a good answer for her anyway, at least not the answer she would like to hear. "Erin, why are you getting so emotional on such a good day?" I said squeezing her hands and Erin looked at me with a smile and so much hope in her eyes that I wanted to look away. "Come on, let's do our best today. And after work, we can go out like you wanted. My treat."Erin's smile faltered a bit but she nodded anyways. "Okay. I get to choose where we go to.""Sure. Let's get back to work," I said opening the door and we both got out together."You know what?" I said, turning to look at Erin. "I think I need to go to the bathroom real quick. Why don't you go ahead and I will catch up in a few minutes?" I said to Erin."Sure," She answered in a low tone.Without waiting another moment, I rushed in a different direction, going straight to the ladies' room. When I entered. I put the file by the sink and stared at myself thr
Kimberly's POV I gulped the rest of my coffee down, setting the cup by the side before staring at my screen in a blank manner, not sure where to start my work from. "Hey Kim," Erin called out my name and I looked up to find her standing over me with a concerned expression. "What's up with you? Everyone is happy after holiday but you look kind of cranky right now," Erin commented and I sighed. "My sister Em moved in with me, but since she is in her finals, she is being more of a leech. Taking some of my stuff and then coming back home late at night. It seems like she's in a new relationship and not concentrating on her finals which is kind of stressing me out as the older sister," I vented. "Ooh. Must have been hard. Your space is already small as it is. How's your father doing by the way?" Erin sympathized. "Well, he's seen better days," I shrugged it off as if it was nothing although it bugs me every now and then. "But what happened to your sister's boyfriend? I thought she liv
