With John now gone, Zack finally settled down in his new, spacious and well-furnished office, with the windows overlooking the busy city.
Not only were the computers and furniture latest, but the office even had a fridge containing all sorts of drinks, a coffee machine and then a snacks cabinet. Zack had just sat in his comfy chair when a knock came on the door, and he gave permission for the person to enter. The door opened and a young man walked in, seemingly in his early twenties, and he had a goofy smile on as he awkwardly walked towards Zack. "And who might you be?" Zack asked the unfamiliar face. "I am Nicolas Coleson and I will be your secretary slash assistant from today on," the guy introduced rather excitedly. "You look too happy for someone who got assigned to work for someone like me," Zack noted. "Well, even though you are a hit or miss, a college dropout like myself could never imagine I would get to the top so soon from being a mere clerk," Nick said, and Zack's mouth dropped open. "I promise I will assist you to the best of my ability, and we will show them all that you are a hit!" At that point, Zack wasn't sure what to be more surprised at. "Did you just refer to me as a hit or miss? How would you know about something like that?" Zack asked him. " The meeting had only ended a few minutes ago, so how did this guy and the others know to use that word to describe him? "Oh, it's on the company's online group," Nick said, taking out his phone from his pocket before scrolling a few times and rushing to show it to Zack. "See? It's posted here on the dashboard." Zack took the phone from Zack and read the post on the dashboard. 'Nepotism at its best. Executives agree the company's latest hire (heir) could either be a hit or miss.' Zack read the post and below it were comments. 'Come on, he is a direct heir of the chairman, I am sure he will do a fair job.' 'I bet his ass is going to fail to make it really soon. Wanna bet?' 'I heard his name is Zack' 'I saw him this morning. He is so handsome!' 'I think I know that name. He used to work here. But I heard he got into drugs.' 'I worked with this guy. Such a waste of talent when he stopped working here' 'Two heirs in one company? I sense a RUMBLE!' 'Who wants to bet who will be heir' 'You guys are so stupid.' Don't you know he is the only son of the vice chairman that died some years back?' 'Really? I had never heard of that. What happened?' Zack didn't feel the need to continue reading the comments and handed Nick his phone back. "The whole place is buzzing as the news is all over the place." "I see," Zack managed to say, to which Nick nodded. "So you said you were a college drop out?" "Ah, um. That was a mistake I made out of excitement," Nick rubbed the back of his head, embarrassed. How worse could it get? Zack thought to himself. "Just, go do what you have to do," Zack waved for him to leave. All of his confidence and excitement went out of the windows as he dragged himself out of Zack's office, only for him to come back later, with a stroller carrying a ton of files. "This is what we will be working on," Nick said to Zack. "Alright, you can go now," Zack told him. "Is there anything I can help you with?" Nick asked. "No, I'm alright. I will call for you when I need you," Zack said, not paying attention to Nick. "Yes sir," Nick's head hung down in defeat as he turned to leave. "Wait. On second thought," Zack said, and Nick turned back with all of his excitement, which only faltered with Zack's next words. "Prepare a cup of coffee. Make it light. You can do that, right?" "Yes sir," Nick replied, defeated. * Chris paced around in his office biting the tip of his thumb. The door opened and a woman entered. "I have assigned him a secretary just as you wanted and just now, Mr. Walker had him moved to an office on this floor," Zelda, Chris' secretary stated, and Chris stopped pacing. "That b*stard. Only a day here and he already has Mr. Walker on his side. And what else? Now they expect me to hand over this important project to him," Chris said frustratedly. "Mrs. Vaughn just called to make sure it was handed over to him." "I am never giving it to him!" "Sir, I understand your frustration, but the chairman," Zelda reminded him. "Instead," Chris turned to his secretary. "Get a bunch of useless stuff for him to work on. Something even secretaries wouldn't want to work on." "Yes sir," Zelda nodded and excused herself. If there was anything Chris liked about Zelda, it was her efficiency. He only had to say a few words for her to understand what he meant. Just then, Chris' phone rang in his pocket, and when he took it out, he saw a familiar name before answering. "What do you want?" Chris said brusquely. "Come on Chris, I thought we were more than that?" the person on the other end said, his voice light and humorous despite Chris being harsh. "Well it's not like we are friends, so quickly get to it," Chris stated. "It's about your company and I think it might create some buzz. I will send you the pictures. Let me know what you think," the person said and cut the call. A 'ping' sound came, indicating a message. Opening the pictures, Chris was surprised at what he saw as he went from picture to picture, all of them having the same content. Chris couldn't help himself, as he let out a chuckle. "So you had some fun too, didn't you? I guess you weren't so innocent after all." A call came from the same person again and Chris answered it. "This will create some buzz, don't you think?" the person laughed. "You know I can't help it when I see things like this. Some people won't like it, so I'm sure you know how much is needed to keep it quiet, right? You won't want anything to ruin the company's reputation." "That sounds like a threat," Chris snorted. Before the other person could say anything, Chris added. "I am sure certain people won't be happy about it. So, with the right words, it will bring more harm than good." "I will pay you double to publish it on a certain day," Chris said before ending the call, leaving the other person surprised. Chris went over to his desk and pressed the intercom. A few minutes later, Zelda appeared. "You can give him the project." "Are you sure about it sir?" "Why not? I just need to make a few changes to it before that," Chris chuckled to himself. * Nick's excitement soon faded away as he found himself doing petty errands for work that he didn't have to do even as a clerk. From making his busy boss coffee, receiving delivered packages, serving him lunch, and then sitting at his desk all day doing nothing but waiting to be called. And on the third day, Nick finally felt tired. He was so happy when he finally got to work for someone at the top, but now it appeared to be what it was, a punishment. Now Nick found himself working for a boss who is given small tasks such as creating and updating spreadsheets for office expenses, but not inventory sales, filing data and entry to storing old files digitally. If he was any other person, Nick would have started thinking about quitting and getting another job somewhere else, but he barely had enough qualifications to keep working in his current place. Just then, Zelda started approaching and Nic sat upright. As he tried to pretend to do something important, he realized there was no important paperwork on his desk. Zelda stopped in front of his desk, looking down at him with contempt. "How may I help you?" Nick asked her. Zelda dropped a file on his desk, and it landed with a thud. "Give this to your boss," having done that, Zelda turned and left. "I bet it's another useless file," Nick said to himself before picking up the file. He got up and went to his boss' office. He knocked on the door twice before entering, to find Zack, as always, buried in his work. Zack didn't look up from his work as Nick went over and placed the file on top of the heap of other files. "You have a new one sir," Nick tried to call for his boss' attention. "Alright. If that is all, you may go," Zack said, still not looking up. "Sir, I would like to help you," Nick stated. "I am fine. You can just get me an energy drink from the fridge..." "I don't want to do things like that anymore!" Nick exclaimed, shocking Zack, who finally looked up from his papers. "Sir, please. Let me work with you," Nick dropped on his knees. "I may not have much to show on paper. But I swear I have what it takes. I don't want to get paid for anything. I know for a fact that no one here roots for you as much as I do. So please, no matter how small, don't let my abilities go to waste and let me help you achieve your potential." "Get up Nicolas," Zack ordered him. "Nick, you can call me Nick." "Alright Nick. Grab a file and let's work on it." Nick's face brightened up as he stood up and picked up the nearest file, which happened to be the file he had brought in. "What is this one about?" Zack asked him and Nick went through the file briefly. "It looks like a proposal between Gabrielle's holdings and the Vaughn enterprise," Nick flipped through the pages. "Let me see that," Zack extended his hand and Nick handed him the file. A frown appeared on Zack's face as he went through the file, realizing what it was. "Thanks to you, I was able to get to this on time," Zack commented, and Nick felt proud of himself. "Looks like there is already a meeting scheduled in a few days' time. Let's get to working on it now." "Right away, sir!"The sound of clicking heels resounded through the large office as she entered, and the smell of her perfume greeted the workers. Some of them turned their heads towards her, greeting her with polite smiles.Kimberly answered back with the same energy, feeling on top of the world.Dressed in a black leather skirt and red blouse that matched her red lipstick, Kimberly swayed her head to the right, her curly brown hair moving with the same motion.Satisfied with herself, Kim went to her seat as the head of the office and sat down and soon after, some of her team members started submitting their files.Kimberly collected the files and assured them that she would look over them. After that, she called some of the members who had already submitted their files and showed them what needed to be corrected and when to resubmit the files.Having finished doing that in two hours' time, Kim went through her desk, looking for a particular file but which was nowhere to be found."It has been two wee
At the office, Kimberly stared into space, her eyes bloodshot and barely blinking."Excuse me. Hey. Miss Wells? Are you alright? Boss," Noah called out to her, but even her favorite title was not enough to bring her out of her thoughts, until Noah banged on her desk and she almost jumped out of her seat, startled.Kimberly blinked before looking at Noah who was looking at her, concern clearly written on his face."Are you okay boss?" Noah asked once again."Oh yeah. I'm fine. Totally. Why do you ask?" Kimberly asked, staring at him."It's just that, I have been calling out to you for some time now. You look like you haven't slept a wink for the past week," Noah commented, and true to his word, Kimberly did look a bit disheveled. She no longer looked as neat as she used to be when she first became a manager."Oh, I've just been really busy is all," Kim shrugged it off. "I'm the boss here, and we've already sent our proposal to the best company out there. I'm just hoping they respond to
Rose's POVI woke up to the feel of fingers slowly running up and down my bare back. The light strokes sent chills down my spine and I could feel a hot breath over my spine. My head buried deep in my pillows, I didn't need to open my eyes to know who it was. It was none other than the guy I picked up last night."I know you are awake babe," he said in an alluring voice, which was followed by a hot breath fanning my ear. I raised my head and opened my eyes slowly, only to be greeted by the streaks of sunlight filling my room, making my head throb, and I shut them close as I sat up and rubbed my head with two fingers while I used the other hand to pull the sheets to my body, covering myself. The guy, whatever his name was, spoke again, bringing me back to the reality of my decision last night, which was a result of taking a few drinks."Good morning babe," he purred into my ears, and I could tell by his freshly sprayed cologne and minty breath that he was trying too hard. "Ready to go d
Third person POVZack placed his long legs on the coffee table, one on top of the other, as he pressed his phone. As Zack surfed through the internet reading the news about the market and stocks, mindlessly looking at what he deemed important to his person and scrolling over what he didn't need to concern himself about, especially gossip, one would easily mistake him for the owner of the fancy restaurant he was in and the staff room to be his personal office if not for the waiter's uniform that betrayed him.The uniform consisted of a white dress shirt, a black bow and black slacks. With his tall legs, slim waist, broad chest and styled but messy dark hair, one could mistake him for a model.Zack checked the time, and it was 6:50pm at the moment, meaning his break would end in about ten minutes. In two hours, he would be heading home after an eight-hour shift that started at 1pm. Zack checked the date on his phone and he let out a deep breath. Tomorrow would be his third anniversary w
Back in the lounge room, Chris handed Zack another towel which Zack used to rub his wet but now clean hair.Zack had taken a shower and changed out of his work clothes into simpler clothes, which consisted of a white tee and blue jeans."You will have to take a proper shower after getting home. I think it would take a few days for the smell to get off," Chris complained. "Who orders food like that anyway? Can you believe they made a soup out of garlic?""How am I supposed to continue working smelling like this? And I was hoping Emilia and I would get to eat dinner together ," Zack grunted in annoyance. He smelled the dampened towel which now smelled of garlic before throwing it on a nearby couch and, using his fingers, tussled his hair."I could never understand why people cheat on their spouses. Especially the ones they made vows to," Zack shook his head. "Because it's fun?" Chris grinned."It's my fault, the whole scene that was caused, and what my wife did to you." A voice came, ma
"Babe," she patted her boyfriend on the chest to bring him back to reality. Her boyfriend turned his head towards the door and saw Zack standing there in shock while Emilia hurried to cover herself up.His lips lifted into a slight smirk as he got off the bed and Zack caught it. "Looks like the boyfriend is here," he whistled, slowly getting off the bed and going for his clothes. Not only was he on top of his girlfriend in his own house. This man was definitely mocking him. At that moment, Zack's rage overwhelmed his feeling of betrayal, taking over all his senses. He didn't hear when Emilia called out to him as he headed towards the man who was buckling in his pants. The man did not notice and was only made aware of lackluster fury when a punch landed on his face. "Oh my god no! Zack, stop!" Emilia called out to him, but he didn't hear as he went in for another punch. "No, stop!" Emilia stopped him by holding onto his arm. She had already slipped on a dress."Stop doing this please.
"Zack, you came back?" the woman rushed to hug him. "You are back home, for good, right? And you are finally going to take back your rightful place," the woman whispered the last part."Nice to see you too after so long, mother," Zack hugged her back."Come on everyone, let's get back inside." Grandmother ushered everyone back in while Zack's mother let go of the hug."Grandma, did you really make us prepare a special dinner to welcome your fugitive grandson back?" Mackenzie, the 21-year-old slender girl with blonde hair said as they all turned to go back inside."That is no way to talk about your cousin, young woman," Grandma scolded, walking towards her family and towards the house, using her walking stick as a support. "And this fugitive son would work in the company to prove himself.""Ohhh! Brother is not going to be happy about this," Levi, the 14-year-old teenage boy with chestnut brown hair, shook his head. "What do you mean? And Zack is the oldest here. So I expect you all to
Third-person POVAs Rose sat at the head of the boardroom, listening to the heads of the different departments in her company tell her the final details of the event that was about to start in two hours' time, she felt an unsettling feeling deep within her."That's good, Mr. Sunshine, well done to you and your team for a great job," Rose complimented the Chief Marketing officer as he finalized his presentation."Thank you, Miss Gabrielle," Mr. Sunshine said with a cheeky grin, a contrast to Rose's Stoic expression as he took in Rose's compliment while the rest of the people in the meeting nodded their heads in recognition of his work.Next, was the Chief technology officer, Mr. Sanders, who continued with his presentation. "... Taking all the efforts brought forward to make this day a success, I would also like to put forward an idea to make our work with our partners more efficient..." Mr. Sanders stated.Rose's curiosity piqued. "And what is that idea of yours?" Rose asked him."I s

As the meeting went on, Zack listened attentively to what everyone had to say, mentally making notes. Everyone, including Chris, had a thing or two to say, and after an hour and a half, the meeting was finally concluded."Now before we go," Mrs. Vaughn brought everyone's attention to the sore topic once again. "As some of you here know, Zack once worked here, and he had such great potential, and that is why I didn't hesitate to bring him back. But the consequence of his past decision is that he only gets to start all over again. His presence here is merely formalities to introduce him back here. Some of you here have worked with him, and some of you have heard of him, I am sure. So what do you think about this old woman's decision?" Mrs. Vaughn said authoratively, although her last question made it sound like she was asking for their suggestion. The room was quiet for a second, with everyone processing her words and unsure how to attempt to answer her tricky question."How could we po
"Hello, Zack. Long time no see."Mr. Walker, a man in his early sixties, looking immaculate in his striped suit, his grey-tinged hair stylishly pushed back, walked in, then looked around at the tiny storage that was supposed to be Zack's office."As if finding you wasn't hard enough, I come to this," Mr. Walker said, looking at Zack."What do I say? Welcome to my humble office," Zack said plainly."Humble would be a compliment," Mr. Walker grimaced. "Even though you are starting from scratch, I must say that this place is kind of far-fetched. Does someone have a grudge against you or something?""Please state your business here. As you can see, I have a lot going on for me right now.""Ouch!" Mr. Walker faked offense. "Given our history, you must not be happy to see me here. But as someone who has been your mentor for years and only wishes the best for you, I must say that this is an embarrassment. But I guess you can't be lucky twice.""I doubt. You must be happy to see me like this.
Zack's POVI stood in front of the huge building, different emotions going through me.I remembered the time I came here as an intern, full of dreams and hopes and how diligently I worked, while making up my mind about the accomplishments I would strive for once I became a full-time employee. Then, of the time I came here fresh off after graduation in a suit and tie with well polished leather shoes and a briefcase. But now I stand in front of this building once again, and I am not sure what I want anymore. How has this place been after all these years? Is it right to come here at all?Chris turned to look at me with a smirk that expressed his calmness at the whole situation, making me realize that I was now the stranger here."Goodluck at the meeting Bro," Chris said with a salute before turning and sauntering into the building as if it was his home, most of the workers greeting him with a familiar smile as he passed by them, and he answered each one of them while acknowledging them.
Third-person POVZack woke up to the loud shrill of his alarm tone.Picking his phone up, he turned off the alarm before sitting up and wiping his face with his hands.Today, Monday has finally come. When Zack will be reintroduced by his grandmother to the company where he will be working in once again.Zack remembered Chris' words when he told him he was planning to resume work. Since then, they hadn't talked much, and in front of the family, the two would pretend as if everything was normal between them.Getting up from his bed, Zack went straight to the bathroom to do his morning routine, after which he brushed his teeth and took a shower.Coming out, Zack walked to his closet and came out wearing a black suit. He was about to start wearing his tie when a knock came on his door.Zack thought without a doubt that it would be his mother, but when he opened the door, he found his sister, Sawyer, instead."Sawyer, hey," Zack said awkwardly."Hi," the girl replied shyly. She was in her
"Hahaha," I found myself laughing instead saying a direct answer. It's not like I had a good answer for her anyway, at least not the answer she would like to hear. "Erin, why are you getting so emotional on such a good day?" I said squeezing her hands and Erin looked at me with a smile and so much hope in her eyes that I wanted to look away. "Come on, let's do our best today. And after work, we can go out like you wanted. My treat."Erin's smile faltered a bit but she nodded anyways. "Okay. I get to choose where we go to.""Sure. Let's get back to work," I said opening the door and we both got out together."You know what?" I said, turning to look at Erin. "I think I need to go to the bathroom real quick. Why don't you go ahead and I will catch up in a few minutes?" I said to Erin."Sure," She answered in a low tone.Without waiting another moment, I rushed in a different direction, going straight to the ladies' room. When I entered. I put the file by the sink and stared at myself thr
Kimberly's POV I gulped the rest of my coffee down, setting the cup by the side before staring at my screen in a blank manner, not sure where to start my work from. "Hey Kim," Erin called out my name and I looked up to find her standing over me with a concerned expression. "What's up with you? Everyone is happy after holiday but you look kind of cranky right now," Erin commented and I sighed. "My sister Em moved in with me, but since she is in her finals, she is being more of a leech. Taking some of my stuff and then coming back home late at night. It seems like she's in a new relationship and not concentrating on her finals which is kind of stressing me out as the older sister," I vented. "Ooh. Must have been hard. Your space is already small as it is. How's your father doing by the way?" Erin sympathized. "Well, he's seen better days," I shrugged it off as if it was nothing although it bugs me every now and then. "But what happened to your sister's boyfriend? I thought she liv
