Chapter 58

Silk and sequence hugged her curves in a dazzling silhouette. She knew the dress was beautiful, but now that she was out in public, she wished she had selected something that blended into the crowd. She could feel the unwanted attention of lingering eyes like phantom caresses as she strained the slit in her floor-length dress, gliding around the dancefloor in Sebastian’s arms. Celine prayed she wouldn’t twist an ankle; it wasn’t a lack of agility on her part. She was a decent dancer. The concern was Sebastian. He was distracting her.

It started in the backseat of the car on the way to their first event as a couple. He took one look at her and closed the gap between them. “You look amazing, wife.”, Sebastian said.

Celine could smell whisky on his breath. She raised an eyebrow and wondered if he would be a problem. “I’m not your wife yet, Mr. Gale.”

She reached for her seatbelt and fastened it. “Are you going to sit here?” He was inches from her in the center seat instead of the customa

Pushing open a door, Celine stepped onto an open-air hallway with a jaw-dropping view of the Hudson River to gather herself before returning and resuming her role as Sebastian’s latest date. So much depended on this night, and like a portent of doom, Phillip appeared. He was everywhere in everything that concerned her. What did he want from her? How did he know she would be here? It was like he had spyware on her phone or something. But that was crazy. If she couldn’t handle one Phillip encounter, she should quit now. She closed and opened her fists to release her energy and regain her calm. She needed to find her Zen, and nothing worked better than a serene view, like the reflection of the city on the Hudson. How convenient. She took a deep, cleansing breath and let the river's magic calm her racing heart.A disembodied voice spoke from a dark corner Celine had dismissed, “It’s beautiful, isn’t it.”Celine squeaked and turned around and made out the silhouette of a man, then laughed

The car pulled away from the disastrous evening that was their first public appearance as a couple. Sebastian sat in his seat. A rigid and unmoving rock on the outside, but she wasn’t deceived. She could see the heat in his eyes. Eyes that led deep down to the core of him that was currently building in pressure. All it would take was a little mishandling, and he would erupt. But Celine had a few questions, a few hundred questions. Therefore, she would have to risk asking. She had a feeling this strange man, this cousin, who had never existed until today, could be the wild card that rearranged their carefully laid plans and could change the difficulty from moderate to extreme.Carefully, Celine asked her first question. “I didn’t know you had a cousin.” And left it hanging out there, open-ended. Hoping that it would initiate the story that lay behind their encounter with the strange man who approached her in the outdoor hallway.Sebastian gazed out the tinted window, and they sat in si

Celine could see cocktail waitresses passing out shots around the entire VIP room. Sebastian grabbed two from a nearby waitress and handed Celine one. “What is this?”, she asked.Sebastian sniffed his shot. “Kick in the Balls”, he yelled over the music.“Kick in the Balls?”, Celine asked. “Why is it called that?”Sebastian laughed. “Drink it and you will see.”Kim put her arm around Celine and whispered in her ear. “It means you get to kick Sebastian in the balls after you drink it.”Celine burst out laughing. “You’re an idiot.”Kim pulled her in and gave her a sloppy kiss on the cheek. “But you love me.”, she said.Celine put her arm around Kim’s waist and hugged her back. She did love her. “I don’t know if I can keep up with all this.” Celine lifted her shot glass and looked at it. She was worried she would get wasted too quickly and ruin the night.“Don’t worry, Celine. Nothing’s going to happen. I’m here, and so is Sebastian. I know all these guys. They are good men as long as you

*Trigger alert attempted kidnapping. His strength was terrifying. No matter how she fought, he overwhelmed her with ease. Not that she had a lot of options. She was pinned with no wiggle room, held in the vice that was his arms and chest. Only her legs were free, but he was dragging her, and the pain in her toes was unbearable. It was all she could do to get her feet underneath her.At one point, she felt someone try and yank her out of his grasp, and a struggle ensued. He held her with one arm and used the other to defend himself. Celine saw her chance and took it. Struggling, she took advantage of every weakness she found while he was distracted. But he managed her easily, even with one arm. The realization was terrifying.Suddenly, she felt his muscles bunch up, and then he struck and grappled with someone. Her toes were crushed in the melee, and then it was over. He wrapped both arms around her and continued. Where was he taking her? Somewhere away from prying eyes? No. Not that.M

Tonight’s event was for a charity called No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Its mission focuses on tweens and teenagers who get lost in the welfare system. Finding homes for teenagers is difficult. They are a forgotten group that has a high likelihood of aging out of the system at eighteen without finding a family. Statistics for adult teenagers left alone to manage adulthood are devastating. No Child Left Behind believes America can do better.NCLB planned an immersive event at Central Park’s ice skating rink. It was a matchmaking and a fundraising event in one. Pre-screened families matched with foster children could come and have a fun evening drinking hot cocoa, ice skating, and getting to know one another. Simultaneously, the foundation held a fundraising event where new and old donors could watch the match-making magic and open their pocketbooks for a good cause. This charity excited Celine, and she was in talks with NCLB and one of her equine foundations to match abused horses with f

It was official. She was an idiot. How many times was she going to fall for his fake sentiment? He really had her believing that he loved her the night he saved her from being abducted. What had he said? “We’re calling this off. It’s not worth it. We’ll run away. I’ll leave it all.” Hadn’t he begged her to believe him when he said that he would never let anyone hurt her again? But what did he do? The first time he had to choose between her or Grace, he chose Grace and left her alone to face the woman who had literally burned her life to the ground. The girl spoke, “Are you okay?” Snapping out of her reverie, Celine noticed the girl had taken her to a quiet window seat. She smiled, grateful to her unexpected savior, who flopped into one of the chairs and sighed noisily.“I’m okay.”, Celine said. She sat in the chair next to her and watched the pretty girl stare at the ice skaters with a mix of malice and envy as if they had stolen her lollipop and then kicked her puppy.Sparing Celine

She only fell twice when she skated the rink's perimeter to the secluded spot where Sebastian sat with Grace. By the time she got there, she was so exhausted that she could hardly summon a spark, much less the fire of indignation and anger that had fueled her impulse to give Sebastian a piece of her mind. If she hadn’t needed to skate back the way she had just come, she would have given up right then and there and gone home to have a nice bubble bath. She was here now. What was she going to do? She couldn’t cling to this wall forever. Why hadn’t she just sent him a text like a normal person? She looked over to where Sebastian and Grace were sitting. Sebastian’s back was to her, but she could see Grace, and her eyes were red and swollen. It looked like she had been crying.Sebastian was a sucker for tears. He had probably held her hand or hugged her. He never could stand to see a woman cry. She wanted to punch him in his stupid nose.Suddenly, she realized she could hear them talking.

With a chair, rolled-up towels, and choreography worthy of a Cirque De Sole act, Celine lowered herself into the bubble bath while keeping one leg dry. The doctor had been adamant that she could not get her stitches wet and had prescribed sponge baths. To hell with that. Nothing was going to stop her from getting a bath. So, what if having one leg out of the tub was awkward and uncomfortable, and she had no idea how she was getting out?She groaned in pleasure. She needed this. She could feel her aches and pains melting away, and the cold that had settled in her bones was gone. All that remained was a luxurious cocoon of heat and well-being.Except there was this niggly wiggly annoying memory of how she had acted like a whiny little jealous bitch, got stabbed in the calf by someone’s ice skate, stormed off bleeding everywhere, and then having to depend on Jameson, of all people, to help her.Shit, Celine, get it together. Where was the phoenix that rose from the ashes? Where was the w

Her lips throbbed, and she lifted a trembling hand to her mouth to capture the memory of his possessive kiss. “You are mine now, Celine, and it’s time I claimed what is mine.” And oh, how she wanted to blindly follow him to the bedroom and let him, but nothing between them was simple.“Sebastian.” was all she could get past the emotions. He kissed her tears and gently led her to sit on the couch, where he held her, stroked her, and told her it would be okay. When the tears finally ceased, she shyly smiled at him, embarrassed because she had cried. “Let’s talk,” Sebastian said, letting her go so he could face her. They were silent for a spell, and she waited quietly for him, too afraid to speak. He was so angry when he found out about the contract cancellation. She knew she hurt him, and she didn’t know how to undo his pain or how to proceed.“The day you came to me about a contract marriage, I would have said yes to anything if it meant I could be with you again.” He gave her a wry sm

The door to Sebastian’s office was violently pulled open, and in strode a scowling, red-faced Sebastian with Kevin on his heels. He took one look at Celine sitting on the couch but did not stop until he got to his desk, where he splayed both hands on his desk and leaned forward. “What are you doing here?”Okay. The board meeting did not go well. She knew better than to respond to his snarky question and raised one eyebrow at Kevin, who mimicked a man hanging from a noose behind Sebastian’s back. Shit. What went wrong? Gale Hospitality was over-performing; the hotels and vacation destinations were booked solid and were bringing money in hand over fist. Was it because he had not secured the German hotels? That was because Sebastian needed Heidi Wolf. Gale Hospitality had a weak presence in Germany, and he needed the Wolf family’s established business lines and relationships. So, he was negotiating a partnership. However, a group of executives led by Yuri was undermining the deal. They

A throbbing, dull ache in her hip roused her early that morning, and she woke to the press of Sebastian’s body curled around her back. This was precisely why she did not want to sleep in a bed with him. She sighed happily. She loved everything about it—being his little spoon, warm and cozy, feeling his morning wood pressed against her backside. God, his smell. It robbed her of her reason. If things were different, she would be rubbing her ass against him and enticing him with morning sex. The kind where neither of them was awake as they fused, languidly chasing their climax. Fully waking mid-orgasm, screaming, then clenching and finally shuddering—good morning.Instead, Celine basked in his arms, fantasizing, and when that got old, she got curious and wanted to face him so she could watch him sleep. See his unguarded gentle features and maybe touch him without waking him. She hadn’t forgotten their fight or his harsh words, but it didn’t seem to matter when they were like this. She tu

She was seated at the table next to Sebastian like they were the reigning King and Queen of Gale Hospitality. At Sebastian’s right sat Heidi, followed by Sophia and John. To Celine’s left was the elderly couple whose daughter was her doppelganger. Directly across was Yuri and his date. The rest of the table was filled with people she did not know.Oddly, Jameson was at the next table over with Grace and her family instead of at their table with his family. What was that about? Were they a couple now? Was he the father of Grace’s baby? She tucked that thought away for later, but her gut was telling her she was right.“Where does your family originally come from, dear.” Mrs. Volkov asked, interrupting Celine’s musings. She tried to remember the stories her grandparents told her about their family. At the time, she had been bored and uninterested in the old-timey photographs of people who were long dead. “My father’s family was from somewhere in France. My mother’s was from Britain.“No

She saw red, and if it weren’t for Yuri guiding her around tables by the elbow, she would have marched over, grabbed Sebastian by the ear, and dragged him off like a naughty child. At least, that was what she fantasized about doing. How could he? It was supposed to be her by his side, not some…some…other woman. Why had he deviated from their plan, and why hadn’t he told her? He probably forgot all about her.Yuri got Celine a glass of Pinot Grigio and a whiskey for himself and sat in Sebastian’s seat to keep Celine company. She found out that Yuri was from Moscow and knew Sebastian from university. She hadn’t told him who she was, but he knew. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to guess. If their publicity or the seating arrangement hadn’t given her away, her watching Sebastian and the scarlet-haired harlot did.Yuri inclined his head toward Sebastian and asked, “Is that who you came with?”She sighed and sipped her wine. Celine was on her third glass and was a teensy-weensy bit tipsy

As soon as they arrived at the hotel, Sebastian was called away to attend impromptu meetings, which left Celine to go to the suite without him. She wandered around, picking things up and putting things down. It was a pretty space with a nice view of the city. It had a small kitchen, and she cracked open a cold bottle of water that she found in the fridge. She wondered what she would do between now and the event and was looking at a menu of services that the spa offered when the bellhop arrived with their luggage. “Where should I put this, ma’am.” Celine snorted. Ma’am, she thought, this guy was probably the same age as she was.“Put these,” she pointed to Sebastian’s luggage, “in the master suite, and these,” she pointed to her luggage, “in the other bedroom.”Celine reached for the spa menu when the bellhop said, “There is only one bedroom in this suite.”Her fingers froze. One bedroom? She needed clarification. “Excuse me?” she asked.“Do you want me to put both sets in the bedroom?

The street outside Sebastian’s penthouse was packed with the hustle and bustle of New Yorkers getting off work. Usually, she liked to spend rush hour seated by a window with a nice cup of coffee, watching the flow of people go by. Far better than joining in the crush of humanity that made her pulse pound and her chest constrict. But today, avoiding what chased her outweighed her fear of crowds, and she looked forward to the obscurity of losing herself in a sea of people. Stepping off the landing, she merged into the current of bodies and let them carry her in the direction of her hotel and hoped one would notice her shame or the hot tears she reluctantly shed.At least, that was the plan. She hadn’t counted on Sebastian’s determination not to let her escape. She screamed when hands grasped her from behind and turned her around. She caught a brief look at his face and saw anger in his eyes. Then he crushed her against his body, encircled her with his arms, and held her while she sobbe

As soon as Celine saw the two gorgeous men stepping out of the elevator, she realized what Kim was up to and had to fight the urge to turn and run. She wanted no part of Kim’s revenge hookup because that was what this was. Kim was implementing the classic strategy of what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. However, Celine would be lying if she said she wasn’t tempted to see Sebastian and Matteo’s faces when they saw the two drop-dead hotties that had just walked into Sebastian’s penthouse. Maybe there was some merit to Kim’s plan…No, nope, just no. A nice bath and a text message update on the paternity test were what she needed, not a demonstration of large predator mating competitions.Unfortunately, it was too late to run because they were here, and Kim was exchanging cheek kisses. “Hello. Coucou, comment tu vas ?” One of Kim’s hidden talents was that she spoke fluent French, and always had her pick of French hotties. Kim was going nuclear, poor Matteo. One of the men had h

They say, “Money can’t buy you love.” but it does buy same-day results of a paternity test, especially if you have a phlebotomist waiting in the hall outside the courtroom to draw blood and a medical courier at the ready to transport your samples directly to a reputable private lab. A lab that was being paid to expedite the paternity test as soon as the biological samples were received. And that was precisely what happened minutes after Grace said, “I’ll take the deal.”Sophia yelled, “What deal.” The Judge beamed at Grace. The bailiff gallantly helped Grace down from the stand, and Jameson looked like a genie had just told him, ‘Of course, you can wish four more wishes.’It was complete chaos as they followed Grace and Sebastian out of the courtroom, and Celine couldn’t believe their plan had worked. But she saw it with her own eyes, and there was no doubt about it. Grace was submitting to a blood draw right there in the hall, behind a portable privacy screen. The next thing Celine kn
