For generations, every summer, wealthy families from New York City invaded New Jersey and overran the eleven towns that made up the Hamptons. Popular for its beautiful beaches and perfect weather. These Hamptonites were like an invasive species that had no natural predators and crowded out and took over everything. The actual residents of the Hamptons, the native species, decided let’s make lemonade out of lemons. Businesses sprouted everywhere to accommodate the Hamptonites’ every whim. Anyone can tolerate just about anything for two months.
The truth was, the Hamptonites and the Townies disliked each other but they had been using each other for so many generations they became dependent. Like a dysfunctional symbiotic relationship. And it turned out they sometimes had common interests that united them. Like their mutual hatred of The Billionaires Club.
The Billionaire’s Club was exclusive and had only two thousand members worldwide. The entry f*e? Be a billionaire. Members of the B-Club had so much wealth it created a gravitational pull and anyone within range was sucked into their Super Nova of alternate realities. A wonderful place where they were entitled to anything they wanted. And in this dimension of privilege, they abused everyone within reach disrupting the delicate ecosystem of the Hamptons.
They really were unbearable and the Bloombards were the absolute worst of the lot.
Celine narrowed her eyes at the pack of billionaire brats who had her cornered against the back wall of the stables. She could hear the horses neighing and stomping on the other side of the wall. She loved the horses they looked after. They were a thousand times better than humans and were the only friends she had. If only she had one with her right now. She could hop onto its bare back and they could ride off and maybe if she were lucky the horse would give Phillip Bloombard a good kick in the.-
“Finally, you are mine.”, Phillip said, interrupting Celine’s thoughts. He was a pudgy short boy with freckles and a wide upturned nose that made her think of a pig. A big sweaty pig ready to be butchered. Refusing to reveal she was scared, the small girl with blue-black hair and green eyes too large for her alabaster face said nothing. “Bring her to me.”, Phillip commanded. Even as a child he never did his own dirty work.
She recognized the two teenagers who came for her. They worked for a competitor. Typical B-Club heir. He hired some locals. What was he going to have them do, beat up a child? Well, Celine was not going to wait around to find out and she put two fingers in her mouth and whistled loud. Startling the entire group.
Thump. Thump. THUMP. The sound of splintering wood was heard on the other side of the wall. Then there was a loud whinny. Celine smiled; these boys were going to get their butts kicked.
Every stable had that one horse. A horse so rebellious that it was unrideable by anyone but one special person. Celine thought it was romantic and loyal, but if the horse loved someone who didn’t own them, then they were abandoned and left like useless junk.
One such horse existed at the Beaumont Equestrian Center and that was Blackie. She named him when she was four, okay? It was a tie between Blackie and Horsy at the time so it could have been worse. Blackie was an angry mean-spirited stallion who only loved two people. The hired man who fed and tended to him, and the tiny slip of a girl who had the same-colored hair as he did.
Nothing could keep him from Celine when she called, nothing.
Hooves could be heard tearing up the earth as Blackie rounded the corner. One of the Baby Billionaires later claimed fire and smoke was coming out of his nose. Blackie snorted and pawed the ground. His nostrils flared as he searched for his little girl and when he saw her cornered on the other side of a pack of humans he whinnied and ran right for the center of the pack, and almost plowed into Phillip Bloombard.
Luckily for him, Phillip was saved by the very girl he was threatening. This girl, who was worth a thousand of him, was brave enough to leap in front of the boy and save his life.
When Blackie saw his little girl about to be run over by him, he managed to stop himself just in time. Huffing and puffing from the exertion. Celine pat his nose hugged him then pushed her fingers into his mane. “Good Boy!”, she said inhaling his comforting horsy smell. She grasped his thick black hair and leaped onto his back.
Once she was securely on his back, Blackie saw fit to rear and threaten Phillip with his hooves, but Celine shushed him and calmed him. With a snort that covered Phillip in horse snot, Blackie turned and walked away with his prize on his back.
This went on for a few years but then one year a new addition was added to the Baby Billionaires. A tall olive-skinned boy with sharp cheekbones and grey eyes. One Sebastian Gale.
Sebastian was a sort of pariah within the B-Club. He came from a family of billionaires, but his family had only recently come into their billions. Old money turned up their noses at new money. Celine noticed that he was not liked. She also noticed he was shy and sensitive and never took part in Phillip’s favorite sport of torture the townie. It was not long before Sebastian and Celine became friends. Which infuriated Phillip.
Then Celine began growing up and the pretty child with long black hair ivory skin pouty lips and green eyes became a stunning teenager. Five feet and six inches of long elegant curves. She had a sensual face and eyes that made you think she knew a secret. And she held herself tall and moved with a natural grace and presence that attracted attention.
That summer she attracted a lot of pursuers but none more determined than Phillip and Sebastian, who competed for her ruthlessly.
“Sh. Be quiet, they are coming.”, Celine said, she could hear Phillip and his gang getting closer.
Sebastian was distracted from his looming danger. “Celine. I think Daisy is going to kick me.”, he whispered. Sebastian was crouching behind Daisy and at risk of being kicked by an annoyed horse.
Sighing, Celine peeked down the length of Daisey and sucked in a breath when she saw Daisy had one leg lifted, ready to kick. “Come over here, there’s room.”, Celine whispered.
Daisy nickered as if she agreed. The two friends smiled at each other from across the stall and Celine distracted Daisy with a nice scratch. Soon they were standing together in the corner. Celine against the wall and Sebastian standing behind her. Both were peeking through gaps in the stall.
“Midget.”, Sebastian whispered. Celine elbowed him in the ribs and giggled when she heard him grunt.
Then Phillip entered the stables looking for Sebastian. He didn’t know where he was, so he yelled. “Sebastian, come out and face me like a man.” Celine felt him stiffen and she rolled her eyes. “How original.”, she whispered and was relieved when she felt Sebastian relax.
Several whinnies were Phillip’s only answer.
Celine covered her mouth to stop another giggle. Just then, Daisey decided to look too, and shoved Sebastian into Celine, making her squeak. The two friends were pressed together tightly in an intimate way that made Celine’s heart race. Daisey didn’t care, she was curious. She stretched her neck until her nose reached the top of the stall and took big drafts of air through her nostrils.
“It’s Daisy.”, Sebastian said.
When he spoke, Celine was acutely aware of his scent, the sweet perfume of a teenage boy and his horse. She wanted to lean into him but freaked out and tried swatting at Daisy to get her to move. “Can you give me a little space?”, Celine asked.
“You’re going to have to ask Daisy.”, Sebastian said. She could hear that he was smiling. She tried to swat at Daisy again but only grazed her. Celine began wiggling, trying to turn around. “Celine.”, Sebastian said. “Celine. Stop. Celine.”, Sebastian whispered desperately.
“What?”, Celine hissed, annoyed that she could not escape being pressed up against Sebastian and the way it made her feel.
“What are you trying to do?”
“Get Daisy.”, Celine said still trying to whack the stubborn horse. Then she realized they were chest to belly, and she looked up. Sebastian’s face was too close, so close she could see a bead of sweat trickling down his neck.
“Hey?”, Sebastian whispered, looking down at her, his eyes dreamy and unfocused. Using his thumb, he brushed away the wild hairs that escaped her ponytail and were stuck to the pulse point on her neck making Celine shiver. His eyes moved from her neck to her mouth. He dipped his head down and she could taste his breath. Celine tilted her face and closed her eyes.
Sebastian disappeared that summer without a word. Two years later Celine married Phillip. After six years of marriage on the day her mother died, she discovered her husband and his mistress screwing in their conjugal bed. Phillip confessed that he was a serial adulterer but only loved her. Even that was a lie because five minutes later she saw him tell his mistress that he loved her. And if that was not enough, Sebastian Gale was there and saw it too.
After six months of healing and recovery, Celine was ready to face Phillip, to sever their relationship if she must. If only Phillip would show remorse and a willingness to change. She would work with that. Based on how he was leaning back in his chair glaring at her across a conference table flanked by his attorneys: she didn’t think there was much hope. This was his last day to atone because after today there would be no second chance.
So this chapter was a bit of history and background and it left me with lots of questions. Where the heck did Sebastian go and how did Celine ever end up with Phillip? We get a clue about Phillip in the next chapter. Please comment. I love to hear your thoughts and questions. I am excited to know what you think.
Tension summed up the mood in the conference room. Even the way they were seated was adversarial. She and her lawyer owned the real estate of one side of the conference table and Phillip and his attorneys lay claim to the other side. Celine thought it was childish, but so were the men in the room with her.To her left was the projection of a PowerPoint presentation stating Bloombard v. Bloombard. This was what her marriage amounted to now, how sad. She met Phillip’s eyes. He was seated across from her. It was the first time she had seen Phillip since the night her mother died, and since she entered the room, he hadn’t taken his eyes off her. He looked how he always looked, disinterested. They were meeting to discuss the divorce settlement. She dreaded this meeting. She heard when there were hundreds of millions of dollars involved negotiations became bloody. She had no interest in fighting with Phillip and had a plan. A plan she hoped not to use because there was still time to stop thi
After her divorce, Celine sat down and started a list of new rules. She learned her lesson. She was never going to make the same mistakes again. She wrote her first rule. Rule #1 No fraternizing with the Billionaires. Never ever fall in love with a billionaire. Over the months, she added things to the list. She was going to learn to cook. Become financially independent. Stop pleasing everyone. Wait until thirty to have a family. Read more books. Speak her mind. The only one she practiced, thought about and was determined to follow was Rule #1.“Come on. Please! Come with me. Are you afraid of running into Phillip?”, Kim asked. Celine rolled her eyes, she took the phone away from her ear and looked at the time. Kim’s voice was inaudible and for a second, she considered walking away. If it would get her out of this party, she would do it. Celine put the mobile back to her ear. Kim was still talking. “will have fun and I don’t want to go alone. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. I wo
Completely unprepared for her assault Sebastian did not get his arms up in time to stop Celine from smashing her face into his chest. A sudden remembrance of being in a horse stall burst like a bubble in her mind and made her even more flustered. He still smells good, she thought, but more masculine. Much more masculine.“Celine?”, Sebastian murmured. Was it her imagination or did his voice sound…husky? Recalling her surroundings, who this man was, and Rule #1 Celine leaped like a frightened feline straight back and into the table. She heard glasses rattle and Kim gasp. Her face immediately turns bright red.She can’t look up at him. He already had her so frazzled that she feared what she would do if she actually looked into his grey smokey eyes. “Sebastian.”, Celine said still looking down. Realizing that she looked like some submissive doll she forced her eyes up but looked past him. “I was just leaving, but it was good to see you.” Celine stepped to go around him, but Sebastian lean
Why was she always saving things? If she saw a stray cat she fed it. A dog in a hot car and she saved it. Lost children, little old ladies, homeless people. Celine looked down at the grinning fool sitting on the chair and sighed. Now she could add roofied billionaires to the list. What was she going to do with him? She couldn’t leave him here. He was like an innocent lamb. To prove her point, Sebastian started playing with her vintage Hermès Filet De Selle bracelet. It was shiny and sparkly and had a replica of a horse bit. It was a very Celine thing to wear. She reasoned with herself. Sebastian was a celebrity. Especially at one of his hotels. Considering the big event being held at this very moment was hosted by Gale Hospitality, if anyone found him like this, the public fallout could ruin his reputation and damage Gale Hospitality. She needed to hide him and get him to the right people.Decided, she began to act.CelineGuess what I found?KimYour conscience? Are you coming back no
Celine hid in the bathroom fiddling with her dress. Doing her best not to think about her wardrobe malfunction. Or the hateful things she said to Sebastian. Not that she wanted it, but any chance at reconciliation with the famous CEO was gone now. “I owe you nothing. You are nothing. You died the day you disappeared and never came back.” She was already regretting her words.Celine’s head ached, and she felt worn out. She wanted to leave and go home to her safe cocoon, with Dad and her horses. Her phone vibrated.KimI’m waiting for you by the side entrance.CelineComingCeline peeked out the bathroom door, relieved to see no one was in the hall. Crossing her arms she tried to hide the torn dress, just in case she ran into someone. She kept her eyes on the ground and walked as fast as she could without calling attention to herself. It felt like she was doing the walk of shame. A ghost of a smile played on her lips at the thought.“Celine.”, a familiar voice called behind her and she f
Celine was walking away from the construction site of the indoor arena that they were building in her mother’s memory. It had been a dream of her mother’s, to host tournaments at their center.“How did this happen? You said the arena would be ready in time for November’s tournament.”, Celine said tugging on her black braid. Something she did when she was stressed or agitated.“It will be done in time, Ms. Beaumont. We have these kinds of setbacks all the time in this business.”, the contractor said. He smiled and nodded, emphasizing his words.“Yeah, if we give you more money.”, Celine’s dad grumbled. According to the business financial records, the equestrian center could afford it, if nothing unexpected happened. But Celine mirrored her father’s concern.“Before we pay another cent, I need to look at our contract and see who is responsible.”, Celine said. But the foreman’s phone rang, and he stepped away.“What do you think Dad?”, Celine asked. She couldn’t help noticing that her dad
Celine’s brain could not prioritize what problem to solve first. The impending darkness, or the strange man who was walking toward her. So, her brain froze; like she was a video game that could not load because two decisions in the code were competing for importance. While she stood there paralyzed, Celine felt like she couldn’t breathe and no matter how large a breath she took, it was not enough to keep her alive. She began gasping big gulps of air, which inevitably led to an ache in her chest. Like someone was pressing a blade to her heart and agony radiated outward like a flower was blossoming under her ribs, unfolding its large petals of pain in her chest. And she feared when it was at the peak of its bloom she would die.Was it possible? To die of fright? When she saw it was Sebastian who approached her and not an apparition, sent by the twilight to speed her toward death, Celine felt relieved. Sebastian could help her. He had done it once before though it was years ago during the
Sebastian’s eyes followed her across the backseat of the luxury car. He looked adorable with his pouty lips and wrinkled brow. Already regretting ruining their moment, Celine wrapped her arms around her middle to stop herself from returning so she could kiss his sad eyes and lick his plump lips. She tried to remind herself of the many reasons that she could not allow Sebastian into her life, but it had little effect on the glamour this man had over her. Damn it. This was why she did not want to see him.“Why are you here, Sebastian?”, Celine asked and flinched. She hadn’t meant to sound that rude. His head tilted and the corner of his mouth twitched up into a lopsided smile. “I wanted to thank you.”, he said. “For helping me.”“Didn’t Mr. Barn’s tell you, that I want to keep things anonymous?”, Celine asked. What was it with billionaires and the word no?The grin faded. “He did, but I wanted to do this. In person. I was surprised when I found out it was you. Because of…”, he stopped th
As soon as Celine saw the two gorgeous men stepping out of the elevator, she realized what Kim was up to and had to fight the urge to turn and run. She wanted no part of Kim’s revenge hookup because that was what this was. Kim was implementing the classic strategy of what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. However, Celine would be lying if she said she wasn’t tempted to see Sebastian and Matteo’s faces when they saw the two drop-dead hotties that had just walked into Sebastian’s penthouse. Maybe there was some merit to Kim’s plan…No, nope, just no. A nice bath and a text message update on the paternity test were what she needed, not a demonstration of large predator mating competitions.Unfortunately, it was too late to run because they were here, and Kim was exchanging cheek kisses. “Hello. Coucou, comment tu vas ?” One of Kim’s hidden talents was that she spoke fluent French, and always had her pick of French hotties. Kim was going nuclear, poor Matteo. One of the men had
They say, “Money can’t buy you love.” but it does buy same-day results of a paternity test, especially if you have a phlebotomist waiting in the hall outside the courtroom to draw blood and a medical courier at the ready to transport your samples directly to a reputable private lab. A lab that was being paid to expedite the paternity test as soon as the biological samples were received. And that was precisely what happened minutes after Grace said, “I’ll take the deal.”Sophia yelled, “What deal.” The Judge beamed at Grace. The bailiff gallantly helped Grace down from the stand, and Jameson looked like a genie had just told him, ‘Of course, you can wish four more wishes.’It was complete chaos as they followed Grace and Sebastian out of the courtroom, and Celine couldn’t believe their plan had worked. But she saw it with her own eyes, and there was no doubt about it. Grace was submitting to a blood draw right there in the hall, behind a portable privacy screen. The next thing Celine kn
After Sebastian’s lawyers finished, Celine thought all there was left to do was watch the death throes of Grace’s case. They had a recording of Grace threatening blackmail, for god’s sake. They should be watching the closing credits on this fiasco of fake paternity, but that was not how the law worked. There were always special circumstances or loopholes to get around or to delay a decision, and all Grace needed was a delay. When Grace’s attorneys began their case to quash the court order for the paternity test, they didn’t even bother to rebut the horrible things she said on the recording. Instead, they argued that Grace had a religious or moral objection to the paternity test.Grace’s attorney painted a picture of her as a devout Orthodox Christian from a family with a long, illustrious history with the Greek Orthodox Church on her mother’s side. In Orthodox culture, there is a lot of emphasis on family reputation and privacy, especially for families with ties to the church and thei
It is not often that family court law protects the rights of a father, or in Sebastian’s case, the alleged father, except when it comes to paternity. No mother has the right to obstruct a paternity test. It becomes fuzzy if the paternity test is requested during pregnancy. Then the mother can say no—her body, her choice. At least, that was what Grace and Sophia believed. It turned out that Sebastian could request a court order to compel Grace to have a Non-Invasive Paternity Test if he was disputing paternity and Grace was publicly claiming he was the father, thus ruining Sebastian’s reputation and pressuring him into fatherhood.Apparently, Grace and Sophia’s ploy was so unoriginal that laws were already in place to prevent them. After Grace dropped her fake pregnancy bomb at the ice skating rink, Sebastian’s lawyers went to Family Court the next day and got a court date to ask a judge for a court order to force Grace to take a paternity test. Grace was notified of the court date i
It took Celine a great deal of self-control not to pace the length of the hotel lobby. Of all days to be late, she thought as she squirmed in an uncomfortable but aesthetically appealing, overpriced, modern accent chair and reread the same page in her digital book.Today, Sebastian was taking Grace to an OB-GYN of his choosing to get some answers. The first thing he wanted to know was if she was pregnant. If yes, he would ask Grace for the second time to take a Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test to prove he wasn’t the father. So far, when he asked her to provide a blood sample for the test, Grace had refused, stating Sebastian’s accusations were baseless and she would not be humiliated. They fully expected Grace to refuse a second time, and if she did, they were prepared.Celine’s phone vibrated.SebastianHereCeline hurried outside, and Sebastian’s driver, Greg, waited to open the car door for her. “Good morning, Greg.” Celine said, trying to smile through her nerves. How is the n
“Excuse me, what?”, Celine asked. Her heart was hammering, actually hammering so hard that she felt a twinge in her calf and then a burst of warmth. Did she tear a stitch? But she couldn’t be bothered to look because she needed to make sure she had heard correctly because surely, she had not.Looking at Sebastian did nothing to help her stay calm. He looked so woeful. She had seen that look before. When she was in the hospital after the fire, he had come to visit her. That was the day she realized that no matter what she said or how she was willing to fight, he was going to marry Grace anyway. The day she asked if he had slept with Grace. He never did answer her, but she guessed from his dark face and how he wouldn’t look at her that he probably had. She didn’t want to relive that horrible day.“She said she was pregnant.”, Sebastian breathed out.The room went still, and she heard a ringing in her ears. The warm spot on her calf grew. She absent-mindedly touched her calf to see if it
With a chair, rolled-up towels, and choreography worthy of a Cirque De Sole act, Celine lowered herself into the bubble bath while keeping one leg dry. The doctor had been adamant that she could not get her stitches wet and had prescribed sponge baths. To hell with that. Nothing was going to stop her from getting a bath. So, what if having one leg out of the tub was awkward and uncomfortable, and she had no idea how she was getting out?She groaned in pleasure. She needed this. She could feel her aches and pains melting away, and the cold that had settled in her bones was gone. All that remained was a luxurious cocoon of heat and well-being.Except there was this niggly wiggly annoying memory of how she had acted like a whiny little jealous bitch, got stabbed in the calf by someone’s ice skate, stormed off bleeding everywhere, and then having to depend on Jameson, of all people, to help her.Shit, Celine, get it together. Where was the phoenix that rose from the ashes? Where was the w
She only fell twice when she skated the rink's perimeter to the secluded spot where Sebastian sat with Grace. By the time she got there, she was so exhausted that she could hardly summon a spark, much less the fire of indignation and anger that had fueled her impulse to give Sebastian a piece of her mind. If she hadn’t needed to skate back the way she had just come, she would have given up right then and there and gone home to have a nice bubble bath. She was here now. What was she going to do? She couldn’t cling to this wall forever. Why hadn’t she just sent him a text like a normal person? She looked over to where Sebastian and Grace were sitting. Sebastian’s back was to her, but she could see Grace, and her eyes were red and swollen. It looked like she had been crying.Sebastian was a sucker for tears. He had probably held her hand or hugged her. He never could stand to see a woman cry. She wanted to punch him in his stupid nose.Suddenly, she realized she could hear them talking.
It was official. She was an idiot. How many times was she going to fall for his fake sentiment? He really had her believing that he loved her the night he saved her from being abducted. What had he said? “We’re calling this off. It’s not worth it. We’ll run away. I’ll leave it all.” Hadn’t he begged her to believe him when he said that he would never let anyone hurt her again? But what did he do? The first time he had to choose between her or Grace, he chose Grace and left her alone to face the woman who had literally burned her life to the ground. The girl spoke, “Are you okay?” Snapping out of her reverie, Celine noticed the girl had taken her to a quiet window seat. She smiled, grateful to her unexpected savior, who flopped into one of the chairs and sighed noisily.“I’m okay.”, Celine said. She sat in the chair next to her and watched the pretty girl stare at the ice skaters with a mix of malice and envy as if they had stolen her lollipop and then kicked her puppy.Sparing Celine
