Chapter 3

The wine glass wobbled in her hand and a single red drop splashed onto their pristine white carpet in solidarity with the single tear that betrayed Celine and ran down her cheek. No longer able to keep her emotions at bay she asked, "How long have you been cheating?"

"I have never cheated on you.", Phillip said staring directly into Celine’s eyes. Celine’s eyebrows rose sharply, and she blinked heavily a few times.

"Pardon?", Celine asked surprised by his denial.

I never cheated on you.” He repeated as if she was slow and hadn’t understood him. He pursed his lips. “It was just sex. Celine, I don't love anyone but you. Look, I am sorry you had to see this. Especially tonight of all nights, but I am a man with needs.", he said nodding as if he was a third person agreeing with himself.

Heat rose swiftly like a torrent throughout her body and fueled her next words. “A man with needs? What more do you need? We have sex every day. Have I ever told you no?” Leaning forward she continued. “I have done every demeaning thing you have ever asked me to.” She shuddered and felt a flush of shame. “What was it that you needed that you were not getting? You say you love me. Where is that love? You don’t even feel remorseful. Who are you?”

Phillip didn’t bother to respond and despite her best efforts, the tears came. She asked another pivotal question. "Has…has this been going on throughout our entire marriage?"

"Yes.", he said, so matter of fact.

Gasping for breath, Celine put her hand back over her heart. “Why did you marry me if you wanted to have other women? Why pretend to make a vow that you were never going to keep? You could have been free to do what you wanted. Had whoever you wanted. Why go through the bother of seducing a seventeen-year-old virgin and marrying her only to cheat the entire time?”

Phillip leaned forward his eyes flashed, and he smacked his hand on the coffee table, “I married you because you are mine, Celine. You belong to me. And I loved you. I still love you. I told you, what I did with those other women was only sex.”

Exhausted, Celine didn’t want to know anymore. She didn’t want this ugliness mixed up with her thoughts about her mother. Her voice was raspy as she pled with him to get to the point. “I’m so tired Phillip. Too tired to argue anymore. You know very well, what you have done. For once, can you be honest and speak plainly.”

Phillip rested the tip of his index finger over his lip and tapped his finger while he thought. What he said next, was probably the only honest thing he had ever said to her. “Aside from the unfortunate time and the location, the problem we are having is your perception of the roles of men and women. Men have urges, the need to procreate. Some of us deny ourselves, but most of us act on them.”

He leaned back clearly comfortable with his beliefs. “Women don’t understand this and when a man finds a woman that he loves, he wants to cherish and protect her. Therefore, we are discrete, so we do not hurt her.”

He leaned forward again, and his voice became soft and irresistible. She saw his hand twitch to touch her, but he restrained himself. “I know I have hurt you. I know I should never have brought someone into our bed. I have never done that before, and I never will again. That I promise you. But I would be lying to you if I said I will never have sex with someone else, and now that you know I am not going to insult you by lying.”

Stunned, Celine could only gasp out a sob. He was completely deluded.

“In light of the loss of your mother, I think we should table this. I don’t want to add to your grief. We can talk about it more if we must, another day.” And just like that she was dismissed and he looked down at his phone.

“Did you block a car in the parking lot?”

She forgot all about that. So, it was his mistress who was in her spot. Celine nodded. “She can wait. It’s the least she can do.”, Celine said angry that he thought the conversation was over.

“That’s not reasonable is it, Celine? You were the one who chose to box her in and now you want to leave her there, indefinitely?”

Celine barked a humorless laugh through her tears. “You are the one who chose, Phillip. Chose to let some whore park in my spot,” her voice rose, “chose to bring her into my home,”, She gulped, trying not to sob., “Then you chose to screw her in our bed.”, she yelled, “And for the last six years, you chose to destroy us over and over again.”

Phillip shook his head and sighed. Like he was disappointed in her. “I will be back momentarily. If you feel the need to continue our conversation, then I would ask that you make an effort to calm down.” With that, he grabbed her spare keys and went downstairs.

Of course, she followed him.

Celine ran down the stairs. Out of breath, shoeless, and with runs in her expensive stockings. She peeked out the heavy door on the subterranean level where she left her car. She could see Phillip walking, with his back to her. She started to follow him, and then her phone buzzed. She ducked behind a pillar and looked at her phone. It was Kim, waiting to be let in.

Shoot!

Kim would have to wait. Celine wanted to see for herself what he was like with, that woman. Weaving and ducking behind cars like a maniac, Celine got as close as she dared and watched.

“Phi Phi. How long were you going to make me wait?”, the pouting blond asked.

“I’m sorry darling, but I’m here now. Let me move the car for you.”, Phillip said obviously used to this kind of banter with his mistress.

“Our whole night is ruined.”, she whined, and she pushed herself into his arms and snuggled into his chest turning a mournful face up to him.

“Did you get into a lot of trouble?”, she asked.

“Nothing for you to worry about.”, he said smiling down at her with a relaxed face.

“I shouldn’t have come here. It’s all my fault. I feel really bad. I just wanted you so much.”, she said.

Phillip kissed the top of her head and pinched her nose. Celine almost fell over on her butt. She had never seen a cutesy Phillip it was only passion dominance and obedience for her. Then they kissed and Celine covered her mouth to quiet her sobs and looked away.

Right into the eyes of a tall broad-shouldered man. He was standing by his car adjacent to her. His keys hung loosely in his hand. He was looking at Celine with a sad frown and then looked at Phillip and his face contorted with fury. Oh no, she knew him. He looked a lot different now, but she was sure it was Sebastian. The man she should have married. Of all the people to witness her humiliation.

She looked back at Phillip. She couldn’t think about Sebastian right now.

“I love you, Phi Phi.”

“Love you too baby.” Phillip opened the door for his mistress, and she got in. Then he got into Celine’s car and pulled out of the way.

That was the straw, the end of her limit. Celine had reached the border of her sanity. He said he loved her. So casually like they said it all the time. They were in a relationship. They were in love. The kind of love she had always longed for. The kind of love he never gave to her.

There was nothing left for her here. Grabbing at her chest Celine gasped for air. Within a few hours, she had lost her mother and her husband and discovered that her entire life was a lie. No longer caring if she was seen, Celine stood and staggered in the direction of the penthouse.

Lotus Seraphim

Who do you think the mistress is? Do you think Phillip loves her or is he playing her too? Or, is she playing him? I kind of feel like they deserve each other. And who is Sebastian? Dum Dum Dum!!!!! Don't forget to comment. I love to hear your thoughts.

Tension summed up the mood in the conference room. Even the way they were seated was adversarial. She and her lawyer owned the real estate of one side of the conference table and Phillip and his attorneys lay claim to the other side. Celine thought it was childish, but so were the men in the room with her.To her left was the projection of a PowerPoint presentation stating Bloombard v. Bloombard. This was what her marriage amounted to now, how sad. She met Phillip’s eyes. He was seated across from her. It was the first time she had seen Phillip since the night her mother died, and since she entered the room, he hadn’t taken his eyes off her. He looked how he always looked, disinterested. They were meeting to discuss the divorce settlement. She dreaded this meeting. After her divorce, Celine sat down and started a list of new rules. She learned her lesson. She was never going to make the same mistakes again. She wrote her first rule. Rule #1 No fraternizing with the Billionaires. Never ever fall in love with a billionaire. Over the months, she added things to the list. She was going to learn to cook. Become financially independent. Stop pleasing everyone. Wait until thirty to have a family. Read more books. Speak her mind. The only one she practiced, thought about and was determined to follow was Rule #1.“Come on. Please! Come with me. Are you afraid of running into Phillip?”, Kim asked. Celine rolled her eyes, she took the phone away from her ear and looked at the time. Kim’s voice was inaudible and for a second, she considered walking away. If it would get her out of this party, she would do it. Celine put the mobile back to her ear. Kim was still talking. “will have fun and I don’t want to go alone. Please. Please. Please. Please. Completely unprepared for her assault Sebastian did not get his arms up in time to stop Celine from smashing her face into his chest. A sudden remembrance of being in a horse stall burst like a bubble in her mind and made her even more flustered. He still smells good, she thought, but more masculine. Much more masculine.“Celine?”, Sebastian murmured. Was it her imagination or did his voice sound…husky? Recalling her surroundings, who this man was, and Rule #1 Celine leaped like a frightened feline straight back and into the table. She heard glasses rattle and Kim gasp. Her face immediately turns bright red.She can’t look up at him. He already had her so frazzled that she feared what she would do if she actually looked into his grey smokey eyes. “Sebastian.”, Celine said still looking down. Realizing that she looked like some submissive doll she forced her eyes up but looked past him. “I was just leaving, but it was good to see you.” Celine stepped to go around him, but Sebastian lean

Celine was walking away from the construction site of the indoor arena that they were building in her mother’s memory. It had been a dream of her mother’s, to host tournaments at their center.“How did this happen? You said the arena would be ready in time for November’s tournament.”, Celine said tugging on her black braid. Something she did when she was stressed or agitated.“It will be done in time, Ms. Beaumont. We have these kinds of setbacks all the time in this business.”, the contractor said. He smiled and nodded, emphasizing his words.“Yeah, if we give you more money.”, Celine’s dad grumbled. According to the business financial records, the equestrian center could afford it, if nothing unexpected happened. But Celine mirrored her father’s concern.“Before we pay another cent, I need to look at our contract and see who is responsible.”, Celine said. But the foreman’s phone rang, and he stepped away.“What do you think Dad?”, Celine asked. She couldn’t help noticing that her dad

She began gasping big gulps of air, which inevitably led to an ache in her chest. Kim let her keep the long jacket, which made Celine feel ridiculously grateful—a sentiment her ex-bestie, now Archnemesis did not deserve. Still, the simple act of kindness made a difference when she was forced back into the darkness, which swallowed her up in a terrifying, inky void as soon as they closed the door. She took her place, curled up in the corner, feeling the press of the walls, and felt a modicum of relief to have something to cover her nudity. It was a helpless feeling to wait for an outcome, especially one she could not control, that was a race against time. Who would get to her first, Sophia or Sebastian? And had Sebastian even received her message? Had Kim realized her phone had been hacked, or had she assumed the phone had been lost in the scuffle? Would her ploy be discovered? There was nothing she could do about it if it had, as she had already done all she could to influence the outcome, and now she had to wait in the dark to live or to die.In some ways, her ter

When Celine and Kim were in high school, they had perfected the art of sending text messages under the table without looking at their hands. Above the table, they acted like nothing was happening. Below the table, there was a flurry of thumbs. Like a swan’s calm and graceful glide above water whilst below the waterline, there was frantic paddling. That was her plan, but first, she had to get that phone, and it was all she could think about as Kim continued Celine’s origin story.“It took me years to put all the pieces together, and by the time I found proof of who you were, you had married Phillip. Phillip was a problem. He was a paranoid, controlling bastard who believed in having the best security and always had you under lock and key. Sophia was furious when she realized who you were and told me to do anything I could to destroy your marriage. She wanted you to suffer. She wanted to kill you. So, I started fucking Phillip and leaving evidence for you to find, but the bastard was me

“My father killed Sophia’s mother and her brothers?”, Celine asked.“Yup.”, Kim said. She mumbled to herself. “My father killed Sebastian’s grandfather and uncles.”It all made sense now why Sophia hated her so much, why she was against the marriage. Oh god. This was so horrible. If Sebastian knew—how could he ever be with her? That is if she ever got out of this alive.“Does Sebastian know?”, Celine asked.“No. He doesn’t know any of this.”, Kim said and seemed certain.Celine’s heart sank into a painful abyss of doubt and uncertainty. If she lived, her future with Sebastian was over. He would never marry her if he knew the truth, and she knew she could never keep the truth from him. On so many levels, her life would never be the same. Funny, how the fear of dying did not seem as frightening with the knowledge that if she did live, she would be doomed to a life without Sebastian in it. She scoffed at the irony of her situation. But could she believe what Kim was saying? She searched

When she heard her voice, Celine burst into tears. She had been rescued. Somehow, against all odds, she had been found. Like a newly born fawn, she stood on wobbly legs and burst into tears. “Kim,” she said, barely able to get her best friend’s name out. When Kim did not open her arms and come to her, she tried to run into her arms, but Kim put her hand out, “Stop.”Confused, she obeyed and did not stop to think much about it. She was filthy, so… She was just so thankful. Waves of emotions overwhelmed her exhausted body, too many for her to contain. So, she stood in place, shaking violently in relief, ready to do whatever Kim told her to.But Kim did nothing to rescue her. She did not smile, offer her the long coat she was wearing to cover her nudity, or even offer her comforting words. It’s strange to have a traumatic event she couldn’t recall. It’s even stranger to have a crippling phobia and not know why. For as long as she could remember, she has been terrified of the dark. It was so bad that her parents took her to a psychologist, where she was diagnosed with PTSD and trauma-related Nyctophobia with panic-induced cognitive impairment. AKA She freaked the fuck out like a cat who got their tail caught in a mouse trap when she was in the dark.According to her parents, this was why. When she was four, they visited a friend’s farm, and she was sent to play outside with Collette. After a while, Collette returned alone, crying hysterically. Alarmed, her parents went looking for her, and when they couldn’t find her, they called the sheriff, and people came from all over to help find her. They searched night and day until a search and rescue dog found her trapped in a crawl space under an old, abandoned shed. When Celine had what her parents called “a fit,” she sometime

When she opened the door to her truck, the interior was covered in a thin layer of dust. The culprit was the passenger window. It was left open a crack over the last year, and while the truck was in storage, it slowly allowed fine dirt to accumulate. She grabbed an old rag and began wiping down the driver’s seat, but the only thing she accomplished was creating a dust storm that erupted in the truck cab, causing a coughing fit. Frustrated with the delay, Celine opened both doors, did a quick clean, and then drove with the windows open until the dust stopped swirling around the cab. After Sebastian fought with his mother, Celine called her dad. He was at the house in the Hamptons with Collette and had taken over supervision of the equestrian center rebuild. Her dad had poopooed her worries about Sophia but allowed John and Jacob to stay in the house with them to placate Celine. Celine burst into Sebastian’s home office, frustrated and seething. She nuzzled, greedily inhaling his scent.“What happened?” he asked. It was his mom. She kept adding people to the guest list, telling Kevin they were essential additions. Every time she did, they had to redo seating arrangements, and now Sophia’s additions were so numerous that they would need to change the venue to accommodate her. When Sophia first expressed an interest in being involved with the planning, Celine decided, against her better judgement, to allow it. Her mother once told her, “All living things reproduce. What we do afterward separates us. Children do not owe us filial love and fidelity for the gift of life. It is something we earn every day.” But she knew that Sebastian’s parents did not prescribe to that gentle philosophy. They believed the stark opposite because not even love was afforded to Sebastian; still, they demanded his obedience in all things.Celine had never met Sebastian’s father. Not even when they were children; it was as if Brandon Gale was more of a legend or a concept than a man. So, she was surprised to see him at their engagement party. According to Sebastian, “He never attended any of my birthdays or milestones. He didn’t even show up for my college graduation. Brandon only had me to procreate his genetic material.”Until meeting Sebastian’s father, Celine would have said Sebastian was a male version of his mother. Now that she met Brandon, she saw some of his features subtly represented in Sebastian, like hi

Tender feelings filled Celine’s chest as she watched Sebastian dancing with Amara. He gently maneuvered the tender youth around the dance floor carefully and thoughtfully, and Celine wondered where he had learned to be so loving and gentle with children. He certainly hadn’t learned from his parents. Seeing how giant Sebastian seemed compared to Amara made Celine laugh out loud. His massive hands dwarfed hers, and he seemed to swallow up her little body in his enormous arms when he picked her up and swung her around, dangling her several feet off the ground—Amara’s ringing laughter brought smiles to anyone within earshot.A sweaty Amara and Sebastian returned to their seats. Sebastian leaned into Celine and kissed her cheek. Surprised, she looked at him. He was beaming, and his gray eyes reminded Celine of the light in a moonlit landscape. He was happy, and the satisfaction of seeing him so joyful gave her a sense of contentment. Breaking their eye contact, Sebastian scanned the table,
