Chapter ten

She picked out one of the nicer dresses from her closet– a blue frock-like dress with a pretty pastel pink bow at the waist band. It looked too fancy, she thought and pushed it back into rack, after a minute of contemplation she resorted to a nice black blouse with matching slacks to go with it. It was only a simple dinner meeting after all.

Her doorbell rang and her face lit up in excitement, expecting to see Gloria she ran towards the door and opened it. Immediately her excitement died down seeing who it was.

“Surprise!!”. Oscar and Maya screamed excitedly with their arms open wide to show their enthusiasm.

Evelyn blinked, dazed with confusion, “Wh…what are you guys doing here??”.

“Ouch that hurt”, Oliver chortled as he ushered himself in with his fiancé. Evelyn noticed him place a bottle of wine on her center table, “Maya and I feel sorry for wasting your time two days ago so we thought of spending the evening with you”.

Evelyn frowned, “With a glass of wine?”.

“See I told you that would be a bad idea”, Maya chipped in and brought a package out of her bag, “Here I am, ready to save the day with beef skewers from the halal restaurant down the street”.

This was nice of them, Evelyn thought to herself- wanting to keep her company and right their wrongs, but they were in at a bad time. She was bound to meet with Aiden in a few minutes and was probably going to run late if she wasted any more time.

“Uhh guys…” she laughed nervously, “I know you have good intentions and all of that but I have to be–“

“Oooh someone’s dressed fancy”, Oscar teased as he strode over to her kitchen to get some wine glasses, “Are you going somewhere?”

“As a matter of fact –yes I am”, She replied, “I was about to leave before you guys came in”.

That was a lie. She hadn’t decided on what shoes to wear and her choice of jewelry yet but that could be settled in a couple of minutes if they’d just give her the space she needed.

“Ooh are you going on a date with our handsome boss?”. Oscar hollered from the kitchen.

“What boss are you talking about?”. Maya asked being kept in the dark.

Oscar chuckled softly as he returned with three wine glasses, “He’s just Evelyn’s boss who is obsessed with her”.

“He is not obsessed with me!!”, Evelyn raised her voice in protest and sighed deeply, “ He hates me to be exact”.

“Mmmmh I smell an enemy to lovers plot here”. Maya smirked

Evelyn rolled her eyes as she made her way into the room, there was no arguing with those two when they were teaming up against her. Oscar and Maya were both an unstoppable duo when it came to making their point stand, she picked out one of her ballerina flats and scowled at how monstrous they looked with her outfit–Aiden was going to have to wait longer than she wanted.

“You think she’s annoyed with us?”. Oscar turned to his fiancé.

Maya smiled as she pressed a kiss to his forehead, “Evelyn loves you. You know that more than anyone and–

They were both interrupted by the sudden ringing of Evelyn’s phone which was on the table. It was tagged with ‘Aiden’ as the caller id and Oscar frowned deeply.

“Don’t do this”, Maya warned, “You will regret it babe”.

He didn’t care, Aiden needed to know how much of a piece of crap he was–from bailing on his wife from the airport, to abandoning her on the planned double date at the bar and ignoring her existence all together.

He grabbed the phone and answered the call, “You have got some nerve!”.

Aiden was taken aback by the manly voice which came in from nowhere, he frowned as he took his phone off his ear to confirm if he dialed the right number–it was exactly his wife’s phone number but another man was on the phone with him.

“Who is this?” He asked.

Oscar scoffed loudly, “Don’t call Eve ever again. She’s better off without you”.

Oscar hung up immediately and Aiden couldn’t help but stare at his phone in disbelief. What in the world was going on?!

He was at the restaurant she suggested they’d meet earlier in the afternoon, made sure to arrive early to avoid any limitations or problems and now she was running late. He certainly didn’t want to call, hearing her voice would certainly make her recognize him immediately but he was willing to take the risk.

He let go of his ego, he lowered his esteem to call her, he was ready to put their differences aside as she was the first to extend an olive branch and she embarrassed him like this as a form of repayment?? Sending her lover to threaten him?!.

“Would you like anything sir?” One of the waiters appeared before him.

“No”, he answered and got up, “I’m leaving right now”.
