Collins and his colleague had gone to Fred's mansion to question the maids. The mansion had eight maids in total and three of them were specifically for the kitchen.
"Mrs… Mrs Fairstone?"
"Yes," the brunette who sat across from Collins answered. "Which part of the house do you work in?" He asked, placing the file he held on the coffee table in front of him.
"I'm in charge of the bedrooms upstairs"
"Where were you at the time Mrs Serena's meal was being prepared?"
"I was busy in one of the rooms. Earlier that day, the head maid had informed us that Mr Sullivan's wife would be arriving at the mansion. We were instructed to work extra hard. I wasn't done with my work even after Mrs Serena was found in her room like that".
The other investigator jolted down something in a book and glanced at her. "Then did you see someone? Or suspect someone"
She answered with a straight face," no".
Another maid came to sit where Mrs Fairstone had sat. She was quite short with long blonde hair tied in a ponytail. Collins already knew her name as he already had them investigated.
He asked which part of the mansion she worked.
"The corridors, I clean the floors and every furniture and portraits."
"Ah, the corridors. What were you doing at the time when Mrs Serena's food was being prepared?"
She hesitated before answering," I was kind of in a situation you see … "
" You should tell us everything " Collins cut her short.
She sighed," I had a running stomach so I… I had to use the toilet quite a lot of times. It was that bad"
" Where did you go to do this? "
The maid looked at Collins, stunned " what do you mean where? Is that importan… '' she stopped when Collins gazed at her rudely.
"The 3rd room which is close to the balcony upstairs. I was working close by and I was really going to shit on myself so I had no choice, please don't let the head maid know about this" she said with a pleading face.
Collins completely ignored her plea," balcony? That's quite close to Mrs Serena's room isn't it?"
The maid's eyes widened," what? No.. I mean yes but I had nothing to do with her meal you see. I came out of the room after the meal was delivered "
" I see," Collins answered.
" Then do you have a suspect? "
The maid was taken aback by the question and kept quiet for a while.
" Well, I did notice something "
Collins leaned forward, fully interested in what she had to say.
" That morning, before Mrs Serena arrived and even after, someone kept acting strange. She kept acting out of place so something didn't seem right about her"
" Who's this person? "
She leaned forward and whispered," June"
Collins glanced at the file he had picked up from the table earlier. " June Harrington?"
The maid nodded. "She works on this floor"
"Thank you, you may leave now."
When she left, the other investigator turned to face Collins , "she didn't look like she was being honest though, do you believe her? "
" We'll have to see when we get to Mrs June's turn"
Another maid came in and sat down. She looked worried and tried not to show it but Collins could already see that she was anxious.
"Miss Rosita?" He asked while glancing at her.
"Yes" her voice was almost like a whisper.
"So it's you, the maid who prepared the meal"
Collins now understood why she was anxious. She was a prime suspect.
"Miss Rosita, you prepared Miss Serena's meal around 9am?"
"Yes, yes I did"
" I see, so did you induce poison into it?"
She answered immediately," I'd never do such a thing. I was asked to prepare this for Mr Sullivan's wife so I put all my effort into it. The head maid took it immediately and it was prepared to deliver. I had nothing to do with the poison ", she broke down at the end in tears.
It was quite obvious that this had been bothering her long before now. Her eye bags were signs of her sleepless nights, thinking and worrying about the situation she was in.
The other investigator quickly brought out a handkerchief and handed it to her. She wiped her tears and blew her nose, "I'm sorry, I couldn't just keep it in anymore"
"We understand" Collins answered
"I'm a single mother and my child is really sick. This is the only job I have to feed him and provide his drugs. I've been working here for a while and things have quite been going well for me. My child's still sick but he's getting his treatment. I'm not saying this to get your sympathy really. I just want to let you know that there's no reason I'd do something like that. All I really want is for my child to continue getting his treatment, please believe me"
" I understand you Miss Rosita, but I can only believe you when there's enough evidence to clear your name. I hope you understand that. Do you have a suspect? "
" No I..I was busy in the kitchen, I didn't really notice anything strange before or after the meal was ready"
" Thank you for your time Miss Rosita ".
The next maid was rather an impatient one. She urged Collins to ask her what he wanted, saying she didn't have time for this.
" Whether or not you're in a hurry, you'll have to comply and answer our questions honestly and correctly Miss Manthas "
The maid rolled her eyes and adjusted to sit in a comfortable position.
" So? " She asked
" Which part of the mansion do you work in?"
" I clean the floor and furnitures on this floor"
" Where were you at the time when Mrs Serena's food was being prepared? "
" Does that even matter? " She scoffed," you guys really think everyone's just going to answer your questions honestly? If the culprit was truly amongst us, I doubt they'd be honest you know "
" Well you sound like you know a lot, should we add you to our list of suspects then?" Collins said grimly.
There was a little twitch on her face. " I'm just saying, for christ sake"
" Answer the previous question Miss Manthas" the other invigilator urged.
" I was in the living room right here, cleaning, that's all I did. I had a lot of work to finish since we were on a break for a while when Mrs Serena arrived. We were not supposed to meet or see her"
" Since you work on this floor, you should know Mrs June Harrington right? " Collins asked.
" Of course "
" Did you notice anything about her that day? "
Manthas, the maid , looked confused for a second before she answered," I think you're mistaken, June didn't come to work that day, she was on leave".
Frederick couldn't concentrate. He had been with Serena for days so he had a lot of work to attend to in his office but right now, sitting down on his office chair with tons of files on his desk, all he could think of was Serena in her hospital gown.It bothered him so much that she was in a hospital and because of him also. He ruffled up his hair with his hands as it had become unbearable to not worry about her. He took the telephone on his desk and called Elene, the CEO.Seconds later, a woman in a suit, opened the hinged door and walked in. The sound of her heels echoed in the large office as she walked gracefully towards Frederick. Her red short bob hair bounced on her shoulders as she walked. Her eyes were dark and her skin pale. Her lips were round, plump and covered in red lipstick. She was beautiful in an elegant and bold way. Frederick's face was buried in his hands as Elene reached his desk. She took a good look at his desk and knew he hadn't been working."What has gotten i
Frederick walked back into the ward angrily and Serena scurried behind him. She went to his front and stopped him, making him come to a halt."What were you saying? I think you were mistaken, I wasn't… I wasn't trying to jump off, I mean c'mon, what do you take me for? "Fred sighed and looked away from her gaze," I over reacted, I'm sorry. I forgot how drawn you were to heights like that" he said , trying to avoid her gaze. " It's fine" she answered," just don't come yelling at me like that again " she went over to her bed and laid down." Why did you come back here? I clearly told you I was doing fine with Anika" she said. Right, he literally should have just stayed at the office, he thought as he sighed again." Have you eaten now? " He ignored her question." I have, they suck at making pasta here. I almost lost my appetite but I was too hungry"" Maybe that's because they're used to making classic dishes, not pasta," he said as he came to stand beside her. He silently stared at h
They hugged tightly for a while before releasing each other."My child, I see you're doing fine" her mother said as she placed a hand on Serena's cheek.Serena wiped off her eyes and nodded."How have you been, mother? I'm sorry… it kind of felt like I abandoned you right?""Of course not, I understand that I have laid a burden on you, it's only right that you're working hard""Oh mother, don't say stuff like that"Her mother smiled. "Fred met with the doctor you see, he says I'm doing fine according to the doctor… but I know I'm not" she said, holding onto Serena's hands.Serena glanced at Fred who suddenly felt the urge to leave them alone. After he left, Serena sighed and said to her mother." You'll be fine, mother. The doctors here are professionals. They're very good so I promise you that there's hope, okay? "" How's my little boy doing? "" Troy's fine. I haven't spoken to him for some time now due to some complicated reasons but… " Her mother started to cough. " Is that 'com
After staying a while with her mother, they parted ways and Serena was led to the rooftop of the building where she met Frederick, his bodyguards and a jet."Is this jet yours?" she asked as she came to meet him and immediately tsked at herself for such a question. Of course it was his, it wouldn't be hers for christ sake. Fortunately he didn't hear her as he was on the phone with someone. She asked him immediately after he had ended the call, "are we going to fly in this to get home?"" Ah, yes, it's better since we don't want anyone noticing you. Also, there's traffic. "" I see""The pilot will take you home, I'm heading back to the office" Frederick said to Serena as he turned to leave. She immediately held his suit from behind," wh… what do you mean you're heading back? You want me to board this all by myself?" " Is there anything wrong with that? "He askedShe let go of his suit and said nervously," I can't go by myself Frederick "" You're not, you have bodyguards with you if
Collins handed her a handkerchief to wipe her tears. "Miss June, we're going to find May and the person behind this, I'm grateful for your help despite the situation you're in. Where are your kids?""I couldn't bring them with me, it was too risky," she sniffed." I'll speak with Frederick, we'll send security over to them and you'll also be safe here. Until we've solved this, your safety is in our hands"" Do you know where May resides? "He asked" I do know but I doubt she'll be there, I couldn't stop by to check because I feared someone would be watching "" I understand" he said and gave her a paper and pen," write down her address, we'll take it from here Miss June"___________________________________Back at the mansion, Anika welcomed Serena and escorted her to her room.''I shall bring lunch for you soon, in the meantime you should have a good rest", she turned to leave but Serena called her back." Well, I… I was wondering if, uhm, if I could… prepare my meal from now on? "
Not long after May Harrington’s corpse was found, the neighbourhood was polluted with sirens and the building was marked with yellow tapes which had ‘CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS’ written on them..“Was a body really found there?” “Too bad, the residents will have to find somewhere else to stay. I feel bad for them”“It’s about time the old raggedy building gets torn down, who knows what other crimes have been committed there. How do people even live there?”Whispers and murmurs from the small crowd which had gathered from hearing the sirens from two police cars and an ambulance, filled the air. Some stood gazing and gasping when the corpse was transported to the ambulance on a stretcher with a white cloth covering it, while others who seemed to have known or were friends or relatives with few residents of the building, were comforting them. The bag which was also in the room where the corpse was found and the gun which was found on the body, was handed to the CSIs for investigating and a
A knock came from the door, diverting Elene’s attention from the desktop to the large door. “Come in” A lady dressed in office suits walked in with a cup of coffee in one hand and a telephone in the other. She walked towards the enormous glass table which had a nameplate at the rear front. The nameplate had ‘CEO’ and Elene’s full name on it. “Your cup of coffee ma’am”, she said while placing the cup down. “Thank you”,Elene answered as she took the coffee, inhaled the steam brimming out and closed her eyes while exhaling. Nothing like a hot cup of coffee at ‘noon’, she thought. The lady in front of her would probably find her weird but she didn’t care at all. The Lady placed the telephone on the table too while Elene took a sip from her coffee. “ The Te-S company reached out to us again” That old man just won't give it a rest, would he? She dropped her coffee and picked up the phone, “It’s the CEO of F&S company speaking” “yes ma’am, please hold on a minute”, came f
“Serena dear,” Anika called, standing outside Serena's room with a platter of food in her hands.Serena opened the door shortly, her eyes widening in surprise at the sight of the delicious spread. It was a collection of her favourite dishes all laid out together. He really didn’t have to do this, she thought.“Thank you so much, Anika,” she said, her gratitude evident.“My pleasure,” Anika replied with a warm smile.“There’s so much to eat that I don’t think I can…” she trailed off as her stomach growled, a loud reminder of her hunger. She hesitated, realizing she was about to say it was too much. With concern in her eyes, Anika anxiously urged her to eat.“ Is he still around?” Serena asked while sitting. “ I want to thank him atleast “Experiencing the taste of Fred’s meal once more filled her with nostalgia. It was a flavor she never expected to savor again. As she indulged, a wave of emotion washed over her—was it happiness? Perhaps it stemmed from her hunger, and naturally, who
It was a beautiful wedding day, set in a charming open area surrounded by tall, swaying palm trees that gently rustled in the warm breeze. The sun shone brightly, casting a soft glow over the small gathering of finely decorated chairs and tables. The decorations were simple yet elegant, perfectly complementing the serene atmosphere. White linen draped gracefully over golden chairs, each adorned with delicate sprigs of greenery and small white flowers, adding a touch of nature to the setting. A golden arch stood at the front, decorated with flowing white fabric and clusters of vibrant blooms in soft pastel colours. The small tables were dressed in light-coloured tablecloths, each holding a single vase filled with fresh flowers, bringing a pop of colour to the scene. Flickering candles were placed on the tables, ready to light up as the sun began to set, casting a warm and inviting glow. Steadily, the guests began to find their seats, creating a cozy atmosphere filled wit
SIX MONTHS LATER “There has once again been a notable increase in the stock sales of the F&S corporation, which is currently in partnership with the well-known Te-Sumi company. The stocks are rising at a remarkably fast pace, and it is advisable for anyone interested to—”The driver lowered the volume of the radio as the passenger he was carrying wanted to make a phone call.Seated behind him was Mr. Te-Sumi, accompanied by another man who was the one making the call. After finishing his conversation, the man turned to his boss, Mr. Te-Sumi.“I believe we don’t need to attend the meeting anymore, sir,” the man said confidently. Mr. Te-Sumi raised an eyebrow, indicating that he was curious and wanted to hear more about this statement.“Mr. Sullivan has finally woken up. With that, there’s no longer a need for us to meet with the board to discuss the idea of bringing in a new chairman,” the man explained, a hint of relief in his voice.Mr. Te-Sumi nodded in understanding. “I see your p
Serena slowly opened her eyes to find herself staring at a bright white ceiling. A delicate chandelier hung gracefully from above, casting soft light around the room. She felt the tightness of an oxygen mask over her face, and a wave of dizziness and nausea washed over her. Confusion filled her mind as she wondered, where was she?It was obvious she was in a hospital ward, the sound of a beeping monitor beside her providing a rhythmic backdrop to her thoughts. She attempted to sit up, but her body felt heavy and unresponsive. What had happened to her?As she lay there, still and quiet, her memories began to flood back. She recalled the terrifying moment when Elene had her in a chokehold, while Frederick desperately tried to save her. She remembered they were talking a lot, but Serena could barely hear them as she struggled to break free from Elene’s tight grip. That was when Elene shot her and she collapsed. She attempted to lift her body once again, but it felt impossible. “Troy?
A scoff slipped out from Elene’s lips. “After all these years, Frederick, it really took you this long to remember?”“You’ve changed so much,” he replied, trying to process his memories.“I had to change. It was necessary for me to stay close to you without raising any suspicions. Now, where were we? Ah, yes. I was about to ask you to leave peacefully, or else it won’t just be Serena who gets hurt.”Frederick let out a sigh. “I’m afraid I can’t do that. I can’t leave her.”Elene’s expression hardened, her brows knitting together in fury. “Oh, so you’re declaring war between us right now, are you?”“There won’t be any war, Elene. You need to let Serena go, and we can sort out whatever issues we have between us, like—”But before he could finish, a loud gunshot rang out, followed by a piercing scream from Serena. Elene had shot her in the other leg.“Serena!” Frederick shouted, sprinting towards her despite Elene now aiming the gun at him. Just as she was about to pull the trigger, Fred
After the reunion, Frederick turned to one of the men who had come with him and instructed him to take Dhoti and Troy outside for their safety until he could return with Serena. However, Dhoti was not on board with this plan. “I want to go with you. Serena is still somewhere in here and I can't just leave her behind,” she said, her voice filled with desperation and concern.“Sir,” one of the armed men called out to Frederick, “the rest of our team has arrived.”Frederick nodded in acknowledgment. “Make sure to inform them to carefully observe the entire building. Search every nook and cranny and ensure that everyone is accounted for,” he instructed the man, who then stepped away to communicate via a burner phone.Frederick then turned his attention to Dhoti, speaking earnestly, “I care for Serena just as much as you do– and I love her deeply. You have to trust me, Dhoti. I will bring her back safely.”Dhoti hesitated for a moment, weighing her options, but eventually nodded, albeit re
The room was cast in a soft, dim light, but the entrance remained shrouded in shadows. As the figure who had spoken stepped further inside, the first thing that caught Serena's eye was a striking head of red bobbed hair. That alone made Serena freeze on the spot, confusion setting over her as a sense of realisation and surprise washed her.As the light illuminated the person’s face, Serena confirmed it– Elene. Her eyes widened in disbelief, and her heart began to race uncontrollably. “It’s you?” she whispered, still grappling with the shock of seeing her.Troy pulled his mother closer to him, clearly frightened by the familiar face that had just emerged. Serena noticed his reaction and shot a fierce glare at Elene.“What have you done to my son?” she demanded, her voice laced with anger and fear.Elene simply smiled, a chilling expression that sent shivers down Serena's spine. “Oh him? Well, let me see how I can explain this. We had a little game, and he pissed me off, so I decided t
Serena slowly opened her eyes to the soft sound of a child sniffling, the unmistakable sound of someone who had been crying. The pain from the gunshot wound in her leg was still very much present, and she winced as she tried to push herself into a sitting position. This place was unlike the dark and terrifying environment where she had been held captive before. Instead, it was a small room that felt almost normal, featuring a bed, a lamp casting a warm glow, and a table with a chair tucked into one corner. As she looked around, she realised she found herself lying on the floor next to the bed. What struck her as odd was that she wasn’t tied up in any way, though the pain in her leg already made it impossible for her to escape. Perhaps that was the reason she had been shot in the first place.Once again, she heard the low sniffles and turned her gaze toward the bed. There, she saw a little boy with brown hair, curled up and crouched on the mattress. He was crying quietly, his small
Serena's GPS was being tracked, and Frederick wasted no time in following the signal to locate her. The FBI had already been alerted and were getting ready to offer any sort of assistance to Frederick.Frederick pressed down on the accelerator, weaving in and out of traffic as he sped down the highway, the screen in his car displaying Serena's location. His mind was racing, but he pushed aside any thoughts about who might be behind this or why it was happening. All that mattered was finding Serena before it was too late.Eventually, he arrived at a rundown old road that forced him to slow down due to the many potholes and bumps. The area around him was desolate, a perfect setting for something sinister like a kidnapping to take place. Deep down, he felt a mix of hope and fear, praying that Serena had remembered to take her phone with her and hadn’t left it behind somewhere. That phone was the key to tracking her down in this desperate situation.Suddenly, a figure stumbled into the
Serena pulled up to a deserted road and turned off the engine. Stepping out of the car, she looked straight ahead. This was the end of the road for her. In front of her was a bushy path, and she had no idea where it would lead. This was the path she was meant to take. The strange voice from the call she had received earlier instructed her to walk down this trail until she reached a building. Only then would she be able to save her son, Troy.Whoever had called her was the same person who had kidnapped Troy and Dhoti. They had already released Dhoti, which made it clear that the kidnapper was only interested in Troy. But why? This had to be connected to her in some way, but she couldn't understand the reason behind it.Serena couldn’t help but dig through her memories, trying to recall if there was anyone she had seriously upset in the past. However, no one came to mind. This could only mean that this person was likely connected to Frederick. Perhaps they were Frederick's enemy, and si
