I was sitting in my favorite outdoor café waiting for Gina. She had called me this morning and asked me to meet her here. It had sounded urgent.

I smiled as my mind went back to two weeks ago, at Fran’s birthday party. No one has expected the proposal. It had been so sweet and Fran had been in tears when she’d said yes.

“Jan!” I was a little startled as Gina sat down at my table.

“Gina, what is it? What’s wrong?” I asked, “You sounded excited and-“

“I am excited.” She put her face in her palms.

“What is it?”

“I should have asked to meet in a bar. I need alcohol.” She mumbled.

I was a little puzzled. I knew her enough to know she was very excited, but I didn’t know if it was over something good or bad.

“Spill Gina, what has gotten you into this state? Did you get a promotion? Or lose your job?” I asked.

“No!” She held out her hand in front of me. My hand flew to cover my open-mouth, and stop my squeal of excitement at the diamond engagement ring
