“I knew!” Gabriel Benson yelled. “ I knew that bitch wasn’t dead! I said it!” He was pacing the living room, half out of his mind with worry.

We watched him. We were too worried to offer any comfort.

We had called the police. They had come, taken the relevant information, and had gotten to work. But not much could be done. Lois was already wanted and had been hard to find. We didn’t think having Jan with her would make it easier. The cops were hoping Lois would contact us and make a ransom demand then they would have somewhere to start.

Fran sat in an armchair red eyed and shaking with fear. I sat on the arm of the sofa. I could have been sitting on a bed of nails and won’t have noticed.

Anna and Justin sat together on the love seat, their faces competing whose would be the whitest. They had driven down as soon as I had called to tell them our suspicions, that Jan had been kidnapped by Lois.
