Chapter 24

Dad and Janet had already left for work by the time I came into the dining room. I had slept late and woke with a slight hangover.

Fran had breakfast waiting for me.

I felt uncomfortable around her as I remembered what Janet had said yesterday,

“I know the deal you both struck when she caught you sleeping with Tony.”

How did she know? Only one person could have told her, Fran.

Tony and I had always been careful whenever he came to the house. Both of us would sneak away from work in the afternoons and meet here, since it was nearer to his office.

We always used cabs, never our cars. No one was ever at home in the afternoons. Fran most times would be out shopping, and Lois hadn’t moved in yet. The few times Fran had been home, I would tell her I had come to take a nap and didn’t want to be disturbed. I would make sure she was in another part of the mansion before Tony would sneak in.
