Sophie’s pov ;
The assistant drove me back to the hospital, and I stayed quiet. I didn’t want to cause any trouble, so I kept my thoughts to myself. I noticed his eyes glancing at me through the rearview mirror, and after a while, he started a conversation.
“Did you just start college this year?”
“Yeah,” I nodded. “I started late, so I’m only a freshman now.”
I had always been good academically, but my parents didn’t want me to continue my studies. They expected me to stay home and take care of my younger brother. Twice they forced me to drop out.
But despite that, I wasn’t stupid. I knew that if I didn’t finish my education, I wouldn’t have a future. So, I fought my way back, enduring all the challenges. Finally, I got into my dream college—though I was delayed by two years.
Once I regained my ability to walk normally. I hoped to return and finish what I started.
I glanced at the assistant. “Please let the sir know that after I recover, I’ll voluntarily divorce him. I won’t be a burden to him.”
The assistant raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. “Hmm? Why do you call him Sir?”
I blinked, a bit confused. “Isn’t that what you and everyone else call him?”
Everyone referred to him like that. It's as if it's his first name.
The assistant chuckled softly, almost amused. “Ms. Sophie, you’re quite innocent.”
I didn’t know why he was laughing.
Just as we were about to arrive, my phone rang loudly, piercing through the silence in the car. I panicked, fumbling to get it out of my bag, feeling my face heat up with embarrassment. I covered the receiver with my hand.
“Sorry, I can’t adjust t-the volume on my phone.”
The assistant glanced over, and I saw him noticing my old, cracked phone. The screen was barely functional, and I had to search carefully for the answer button, trying not to crack it more. The ringtone was so obnoxiously loud that it could wake the dead.
Finally, I managed to press the answer button, and immediately, my mother’s harsh voice screamed through the speaker.
“You’ve grown wings, haven’t you? Staying out all night like this? Where are you? Get home right now! The husband I found for you is here to propose today. Hurry back and let him see you!”
I suppressed my sadness and asked, “What husband? The 45-year-old man without a leg?”
My mother’s voice came back dripping with sarcasm. “Don’t forget, you’re fucking crippled now! It’s a miracle someone even wants you, and you have the nerve to be picky? Who the hell do you think you are, some kind of princess?”
Before I could respond, I heard a disgusting man’s voice through the phone: “A college student for only £20,000? You’re not trying to scam me, are you? Can she even give birth? If not, don’t expect a single fucking penny from me.”
My mother’s tone shifted quickly, becoming sickly sweet as she tried to assure him, “Oh, don’t worry. She’s a virgin, I swear. She’ll give you a fat, healthy boy in no time.”
“Good,” the man said with a laugh that made my skin crawl. “My parents have been dying for grandkids. Two in three years will be perfect. A young thing like her should be quite…energetic in bed.”
My heart shattered at that moment. My own mother was selling me to this vile man like I was nothing more than property. If it weren’t for Dominic, I knew they would have dragged me back home and handed me over to that disgusting man to bear his children.
Clutching the phone tighter, I said firmly, “Mom, I’m already married, and I’ll never come back.”
I wasn’t going to let them sacrifice me for their own gain anymore.
“What? Married? To whom? When the hell did this happen? Why don’t I know anything about it?” my mother shouted, furious, but I didn’t care anymore. “This fucking ungrateful bitch! I raised her for nothing! Ugh!”
In the background, I could hear my father’s voice, calm and indifferent as always. “She said she’s married?”
“It’s bullshit,” my mother snapped. “She’s crippled! Who the fuck would marry her?”
The man spit out his frustration. “You fucking promised me a virgin! If she’s already been ruined, don’t expect a single cent of my money!”
My mother scrambled to reassure him, her voice dripping with that same fake sweetness. “Don’t worry! That stupid girl is as obedient as a dog. She’ll be back within a couple of days with her tail between her legs. Once she does, I’ll send her straight to you.”
Without another word, I hung up.
By the time we arrived at the hospital, I could barely hold myself together. As soon as I got out of the car, I crouched down on the pavement, tears streaming down my face. I couldn’t stop them.
The assistant handed me a pack of tissues, his voice gentle. “Ms. Sophie, please don’t cry. A family like that isn’t worth your tears.”
I handed him my phone. “Can you block my parents’ numbers for me? I don’t want to hear from them anymore.”
I couldn’t deal with their cruelty any longer. I had finally escaped, and the last thing I needed was to be dragged back into that nightmare.
“Of course.” The assistant took the phone from me, quickly blocking their numbers. From now on, they won't be able to reach me.
“Ms. Sophie, try not to bend so much,” he said as I stood up, wiping my face. “It’s not good for your leg, especially with your upcoming surgery.”
I nodded, trying to push the pain down. “Thank you.”
The doctor had already warned me about the risks of moving too much, especially with how fragile my condition was. But after everything I had survived, this was just another hurdle I knew I could overcome.
My nose was red from crying, and I knew I probably looked even more weak than I felt. The assistant glanced at me with sympathy in his eyes, something I wasn’t used to.
Suddenly, a luxury car passed by the hospital entrance, and I noticed a man in the backseat glancing out the window. Our eyes met. He looked shocked, like he’d seen a ghost.
I had no idea who that person was so I averted my gaze. Though I don't know why I felt a strange feeling in my chest looking at that stranger.
Laying back down in the hospital bed, I tried to relax, but my phone rang again. It was Jenna, my best friend.
“Sophie, I talked to the school about your situation, but they’re insisting that a direct relative has to come in to help you retain your student status. Otherwise, they’re going to revoke it.”
My heart pounded in my chest. “Revoke my student status? No! I worked so hard to get into this university.”
If they revoked my status, I didn’t know what I’d do.
“Do you think you could ask your family to help with the paperwork?” Jenna asked, concerned.
I shook my face in frustration. “That’s not possible. My parents never wanted me to go to college. They’d probably tell the school to cancel my admission if they had the chance.”
I knew my family all too well.
Jenna’s voice was full of worry. “What are we going to do? The school is pushing for a family member to show up by the end of the week.”
I wiped my eyes, trying to think. And then it hit me. “Wait…does a husband count as a direct relative?”
There was a long pause on the other end. “Yes, of course, but Sophie…when did you get a husband?”
“This morning,” I whispered, still trying to wrap my head around it.
It all felt surreal—being married to someone I didn’t even know. I didn’t know his full name or his background.
Jenna gasped. “You got married just like that? Are you serious? What if he’s…well, what if he’s dangerous or something?”
I bit my lip. “He’s paying for my treatment. I don’t think he’s a bad person.”
Dominic had already spent so much money on my surgery. If he wasn’t serious, why would he do that?
“What’s his name?”
I thought for a moment. “His last name is William, I think. I’ve just been calling him Sir.”
Jenna sounded puzzled. “William…that doesn’t ring any bells. He’s probably not some super-rich guy, then.”
Jenna came from a wealthy family and knew many influential people. She’d even offered to help me pay for my medical bills, but I couldn’t accept her help. I didn’t want my family to exploit her kindness.
Forcing a small smile, I said, “I’m not expecting to have married someone rich. Honestly, I just want a simple life. As long as the couple works hard, that’s what matters.”
Just then, the door to the hospital room opened, and Dominic walked in.
Sophie’s pov ;I heard the faint sound of the door creaking open behind me, and I quickly ended the call with my friend. My heart raced as I looked up, already knowing who it was before he even spoke. I smiled, probably looking ridiculous, but I couldn't help it. Excitement bubbled up inside me.He stepped closer with his calm face, but there was something in his eyes that made me pay attention to him."The doctors are coming from overseas," he let out. "I’ve made appointments with them personally. They'll perform the surgery in two days. Once it's done, you’ll be discharged."For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. Two days? Was this real? My heart stuttered, skipping beats in a way that wasn’t entirely unpleasant. I swallowed, feeling the excitement building in my chest."And…after the surgery?" I asked hesitantly. "Will I be able to walk again?"His gaze softened as he looked at me. "Not immediately but soon."That was all I needed to hear. The joy surged through me so quickly I almost f
Dominic’s pov ;After leaving Sophie’s ward, I pulled out my phone and dialed my assistant. As the line connected, I glanced back towards the door. Her request was a simple matter, one I didn’t need to personally handle.“Sort out the issue with Sophie’s university,” I said as soon as he answered. “Make sure everything is handled before her discharge. I don’t want any complications.”My assistant hesitated slightly, which wasn’t like him. “Mr. Dominic, I’ll handle it. But, sir, there’s something else…”I frowned, immediately suspicious. “What is it?”“It’s about what happened when we picked her up earlier. There were…incidents with her family. They made things quite difficult.”As he explained the details, my grip on the phone tightened, anger slowly building. I already knew she hadn’t been living well, but I hadn’t realized how miserable her life with her family truly was.I cut him off abruptly. “I understand.”Hanging up, I stared out the hospital window. What kind of parents would
Sophie’s pov ;After the surgery, I lay there feeling relieved but still nervous about the recovery. With this surgery, there was hope that I could finally walk without dragging my leg behind me.It still felt surreal—two days ago, I had been terrified of what my life would look like, but now everything seemed brighter. I could finally walk like a normal person. As I lay there, I suddenly felt something cold being placed in my hand."A phone?" I gasped, lifting it slightly. It looked new and expensive. I'd only ever seen phones like this in other people’s hands, never mine. My old phone was so ancient and slow, I’d had to deal with spam messages waking me up at night.Dominic, who stood next to my bed, asked, “Do you like it?”I nodded, a smile spreading across my face. “I love it! Thank you!”I held the phone tightly and gratefully. This was more than just a phone. Sir—no, my husband—had done so much for me. He had taken care of my surgery, ensured I didn’t lose my university spot, a
Dominic’s pov ;“Come with me,” I placed the empty glass back on the table. I took Sophie’s wrist without a second thought, guiding her out of the room. “I'll take you shopping.”Normally, I have a serious phobia of physical contact, especially with people who get too close, but oddly enough, holding her hand didn’t irritate me. Maybe it was because she wasn’t wearing heavy perfume, just a faint scent of flowers and milk. It was…almost tolerable."Sir, why are you taking me shopping in person?" Sophie asked out of curiosity. Her question caught me off guard, and I felt a twinge of irritation. "Don’t ask so many questions," I said sharply, making her flinch. In reality, I had been pulled away from a meeting, unable to ignore my grandmother's incessant phone calls about Sophie. "She’s your wife, if you don’t take care of her, who will?” That’s what she told me.Sophie’s face fell after my abrupt response, and she dropped her head, clearly disappointed. I clenched my jaw, feeling that fa
Brandon’s pov ;I stood outside the grand garden of William’s mansion. The Williams Group’s sudden withdrawal had sent shockwaves through the business world in London, and our company was now on the brink of collapse.I didn’t know how we had offended Dominic Williams, but it was serious—serious enough to cripple us.Stepping inside, I couldn’t help but feel anxiety and frustration. Dominic’s family had been our strongest ally for years, and now they had turned against us without warning. I was greeted by the sight of Madam, seated gracefully under a pavilion, sipping tea calmly.I approached her respectfully. "Madam, our family has cooperated with the Williams Group for many years. We've always done our part, never stepping out of line. Why has the investment been withdrawn so suddenly?"She didn’t answer right away, her gaze lingering on the teacup in her hands. "I stopped managing the company’s affairs a long time ago. You should ask Dominic about these matters.”I forced a tight s
Sophie’s pov ;That day when Sir left me with that cold glance, I felt like crying. His eyes, usually so distant, had grown even colder, and when they locked onto mine for that brief second, I felt an overwhelming chill seep through my skin. That glance made me feel like I was falling into an ice cellar, and I couldn't breathe for a long time after he walked out of the door. I stood there, frozen in place, my heart pounding in my chest as I stared at the spot where he had just been. What did I do wrong?Did I offend him in some way? I looked down at my skirt. Was it because I soiled my skirt? Did he think I was careless, or worse, slovenly? I bit my lip, fighting back the wave of embarrassment that threatened to overwhelm me. But I like to keep myself clean. But that look in his eyes made me question everything about myself.Aunt Rosa laid a comforting hand on my arm. "Don't think too much. Mr. Dominic must have something urgent at work so he left suddenly."I nodded slowly, but the u
Dominic’s pov ;The family doctor came over, giving Sophie a brief physical examination and checked her temperature. “Don’t worry, sir. She is fine. She just needs to take some antipyretic medicine and get plenty of rest.”I nodded. “Alright. I’ll ask my assistant to inform the finance department about your bonus.”The doctor waved his hands, flustered, “Oh no, no, that won’t be necessary. You’ve always been too generous, sir.”I ignored his protests. “You’ve been loyal to my family for years. And we reward loyalty.”“Thank you so much,” The doctor bowed slightly before excusing himself.Once the door clicked shut, I turned back to the girl lying on the couch. I had every intention of leaving her care to the nannies, but then she did something unexpected—her hand weakly reached for my sleeve.“Sir…don’t go,” she murmured, barely conscious, her eyes fluttering open for just a second.I paused, irritated. Does she think I’m here to coddle her?“Take the medicine,” I said curtly, pouring
Dominic’s pov ;"By the way, the boy from the Carpenter family came to visit today. He said a lot of kind things about us. I felt sorry for them, especially after losing their daughter, so I gave him a heads up."I clenched my jaw, feeling a wave of irritation rise up. Grandma’s soft heart had always been both a blessing and a curse for me. I understood where she was coming from—having a daughter herself, she couldn’t help but feel pity for the Carpenter family. But sympathy couldn’t erase the fact that the Carpenters had played their part in conspiring against us. No amount of apologies or sweet words would change that.“Grandma, I know you're kind-hearted. But don’t forget, they were willing to plot against you to get to our family.”She hesitated for a moment, clearly not wanting to antagonise me. “Dominic, it was the adopted daughter of the Carpenter family who acted on her own. There’s no need to blame the entire family for her actions.”I could hear the caution in her voice, but
Dominic’s pov ;Sophie's cheeks flushed a beautiful shade of red as she quickly slipped out of my arms, her defiant voice ringing out, “I learned all this from you.”I raised an eyebrow. “From me?”She snorted, that small, indignant sound only making me want to pull her back close.“If you dare to be mean to me again, I’ll run away and stop being your wife, Dominic.”She said my name, and I felt it like a whisper of something intimate, a quiet plea that made my throat tighten. The urge to pull her back into my arms surged within me, a reminder of just how disarming this girl was without even realising it.I felt my eyes darken as I leaned closer, my voice low and almost a threat. “If you call my name again, don’t even think about going back tonight.”She blinked, innocence mixed with a small hint of curiosity. “Where do I sleep, then?”My gaze met hers, and I let the words slip, heavy with intention. “What do you think?”Her face went a deeper red as she caught my meaning. I could alm
Sophie’s pov ;The moment I placed the strawberry mousse cake on the table, I felt like I was holding something priceless. I'd never bought a cake for myself before, much less one this big.Touching the tray beneath it, I frowned. “Sir, why is a six-inch cake so big? How can the two of us finish it?”Sir sat across from me, his expression impassive as usual. He simply replied, “If you can’t finish it, give the rest to Aunt Rosa. She has children at home.”I smiled, nodding eagerly. “That’s a great idea, Sir. You really do have a good heart.”He didn’t respond, only looked away with an odd expression. I knew that some people thought Sir was cold and distant, but I didn’t believe it. He’d always been so thoughtful, even if he hid it under that serious demeanor.I cut the cake and gave Sir the biggest piece, topping it with the best strawberries. I wanted him to enjoy this as much as I did, and as I took my first bite, my whole mouth filled with the creamy, sweet taste I’d always dreamed
Sophie’s pov ;After I changed into my comfortable clothes, I still felt a strange warmth blooming in my chest.Sir’s words from last night kept replaying in my mind. He’d said no one had the right to judge my body, that he just wanted me to be healthy.A gentle warmth crept over my skin again, like I was wrapped in something soft and sweet. Sir could be so cold and distant, but in his own way, he really cared. I couldn’t help smiling. The next morning, Aunt Rosa handed me a glass of red date soy milk, and I gulped it down with a new sense of ease.“Aunt Rosa, you don’t have to make this for me every morning now,” I said, feeling lighter. My heart was finally at peace; I didn’t need to change myself for anyone.Across the table, Sir looked up from his magazine. I caught a brief smile on his face before he masked it with his usual calm expression.I waved to him, grabbing my thermos for class. “Sir, I’m heading out now. Bye!”“Hmm,” he replied, still cool as always, but I felt his gaze
Sophie’s pov :After I changed into my comfortable clothes, I tried to brush off the odd feeling in my chest.Sir had helped me without so much as a second glance, not even hesitating. Here I was, face burning, hoping for some kind of reaction, and he barely noticed me at all.Not even a flicker of interest. Was I really that unattractive? I flopped onto the bed and grabbed my pillow, punching it with frustration."Stinky Sir," I muttered. "You're the one who's blind!"At dinner, I tried to brush it off, but Sir kept piling food onto my plate until it looked like a mini mountain.I grimaced, "Sir, I don’t have that big of an appetite.""Eat more, you're too thin," he replied, all calm and serious, his black hair still damp, and his face looking as cold as ever. His words hit me like a bolt. Was he saying I was so thin it was...unappealing? Was that why he wasn’t interested in me?I looked down at my body, scrutinizing myself. Sure, I wasn’t exactly curvy, but was I that boring? Embarr
Sophie’s pov ;I know the Sir is strict with me because he wants me to be stronger, to rely less on him, and to start finding my own strength.I don’t want to be that little crybaby anymore, someone who can’t handle even a small breeze. One day, I want to be someone who can stand on her own and face any storm that comes her way.So, when he said in that firm tone of his, “Don’t go to work at the coffee shop anymore.”I knew he was only looking out for me."But, what if I still want to make money?" I asked, feeling a bit sheepish.“I’ll help you find a new job,” he replied. “Somewhere farther from school, so you won’t be targeted by Amanda again.”As usual, he made perfect sense. It wouldn’t do anyone any good if that crazy woman showed up again and caused trouble at the café. The manager there was so kind; it wouldn’t be fair to drag them into this mess.“Okay, thank you, Sir,” I said with a nod. “Next time I pass by the café, I’ll tell the manager I won’t be coming in anymore.”I fig
Dominic’s pov ;I kept my arm around Sophie’s shoulders, feeling the tremor still in her frame.“I…I’m fine,” she whispered, her voice a bit shaky, but she looked up at me with wide worried eyes. “Sir, I called you so suddenly, would it interfere with your work?”Her question took me by surprise. She’d been scared out of her mind, yet now her biggest concern was whether she’d inconvenienced me. There was a softness in her I didn’t see often—almost vulnerable.I kept my gaze on her. “Contact me if you need anything anytime. Don’t overthink it. Otherwise, why did I buy you a phone?”Her shoulders eased a little, and I could tell the tension was starting to fade. But when I turned to Amanda, that tenderness I’d felt slipped away, replaced by an edge of disgust and annoyance.“Sir, she’s the one who came to the hospital before, accusing me of being a mistress,” Sophie explained, confusion and frustration in her voice. “But I don’t even know her.”My eyes narrowed as I looked Amanda up and
Sophie’s pov ;The weekend finally came, and while Sir was busy at the company, I headed over to the coffee shop for my second day of work.Yesterday went so smoothly I thought today would be just as uneventful. But fate had a different plan.Just as I was delivering an order—an iced Americano, a cappuccino, and a slice of Basque cheesecake—a voice pierced through my ears harsh and hostile."Is it you?"Confused, I set the tray down and glanced at the girl across from me. She had her arms crossed, staring me down as if I’d committed some unforgivable sin.Isn't she the popular girl Amanda from university.“Enjoy your meal,” I muttered politely, ready to leave the table. But she wasn’t done. “Wait,” I turned, trying to keep my expression neutral.“What can I do for you?”She looked me up and down, sizing me up as if I were some kind of merchandise on sale. “You're so poor that you have to come work in a coffee shop?”I gripped the tray tighter, trying to stay calm. “I don’t know you,”
Edwin’s pov ;I texted Carolyn about Sophie, I hoped to get some insight into her preferences. She was Sophie’s roommate, after all, so she had to know something.Carolyn’s reply came quickly:"You can ask if you want to, but I have to make it clear that I will never reveal anything involving Sophie’s privacy to you."“No problem,” I assured her. “I just want to find out about her preferences, nothing else. By the way, you and Sophie are roommates, right?”"Yes, we’re in the same dormitory. As for Sophie's preferences…” Carolyn paused for a moment before adding, “She likes to learn, works hard, and is very friendly to people."Not exactly the answer I was looking for, so I pressed a bit. “Do you know what type of boys she likes?”There was a pause before Carolyn replied, “Sophie’s aesthetic is…unique. She doesn’t seem to like guys who are too handsome.”That took me by surprise. “She doesn’t like handsome guys?”"Right. In her eyes, handsome guys are ugly-hearted and rude.” Carolyn ev
Sophie’s pov ;I carefully wrote down today’s date and the costs for the exam and medication in my little notebook.I fumbled with the pen, making sure to add the supplements and nutrients that Sir had been buying for me, even though I didn’t know how much they cost. For someone with an ordinary family like his, all these expenses—especially that eight-digit surgery fee—must have drained his savings and probably left him with some debt.Sir never brings up these things, but I can’t forget. Every little bit of his kindness is etched in my memory, whether he realises it or not.Once I’d finished writing, I tucked the account book into the bedside table and carefully hid it away. I was about to turn off the light when memories of that night crept back into my thoughts.Just once…Will it really only happen once? We only did it just one time. I swallowed, a strange heat flooding me. Is it enough to make me pregnant? But why hasn’t he asked me to fulfil my role as his wife again? Maybe he d
