Sophie’s pov ;
After the surgery, I lay there feeling relieved but still nervous about the recovery. With this surgery, there was hope that I could finally walk without dragging my leg behind me.
It still felt surreal—two days ago, I had been terrified of what my life would look like, but now everything seemed brighter. I could finally walk like a normal person.
As I lay there, I suddenly felt something cold being placed in my hand.
"A phone?" I gasped, lifting it slightly. It looked new and expensive. I'd only ever seen phones like this in other people’s hands, never mine. My old phone was so ancient and slow, I’d had to deal with spam messages waking me up at night.
Dominic, who stood next to my bed, asked, “Do you like it?”
I nodded, a smile spreading across my face. “I love it! Thank you!”
I held the phone tightly and gratefully. This was more than just a phone. Sir—no, my husband—had done so much for me. He had taken care of my surgery, ensured I didn’t lose my university spot, and now, he had given me this phone. I knew it was one of the latest models, something I could never have afforded myself.
I bit my lip, unsure how to express everything I was feeling. “Sir, you’re so kind to me,” I blurted out before I could stop myself. He had been nothing but good to me. How could I ever repay him?
“I still have things to take care of,” he said, brushing off my compliment. He was always so stoic, so hard to read. “If you need anything, ask Aunt Rosa or the assistant. My number is saved in your phone if there’s something important, but…” He paused. “Try to call me as little as possible.”
I nodded, my heart sinking slightly. He didn’t want to be bothered by me. I understood that. This was a marriage of convenience, after all. He didn’t see me as his real wife, just an a duty. Still, I couldn’t help but feel a small pang of disappointment.
“Of course,” I said quietly. “I won’t disturb you.”
He gave me a curt nod and turned to leave, and as the door clicked shut behind him, I let out a long breath. The room felt emptier without him, but I didn’t have time to dwell on it. The nurse helped me set up the phone, transferring my contacts, and I quickly asked her to leave me alone.
I stared at the phone in my hand, wondering how to use the voice command feature. I wasn’t very tech-savvy, but it didn’t take long to figure out.
“Call Jenna,” I instructed, and within seconds, the phone rang.
“Sophie!” Her voice was bright and cheerful. “You’re calling me already! Does that mean you’re better?”
“I just had surgery. The doctors said I’ll be walking normally soon, but guess what? I got a new phone! It has a voice command, so I can just tell it what to do.”
“You got a new phone? Who bought it for you?”
I hesitated, glancing down at the sleek device in my hand. “My…my husband,” I said shyly.
There was a brief pause on the other end, and I could almost picture her raising an eyebrow. “Your husband, huh? He’s more thoughtful than I expected! What does he do for work? And what does he's like in person?”
“I think he works for the Williams Group,” I answered, unsure of the specifics. I still didn’t know much about Dominic, other than the fact that he was well-connected and successful. “But I don’t know what his personality…yet. Sometimes he's cold and sometimes he's really nice and kind.”
She laughed. “You don’t even know what your husband is like! Aren’t you obsessed with kind people? What if he’s not kind?”
I chuckled softly, shaking my head. “It doesn’t matter. Even if he’s not kind, I’ll still be grateful. He’s done so much for me. I’m not someone who forgets kindness.”
That much was true. Dominic—whatever his reasons for doing so—had given me the chance to live a better life. I would always remember that. Whether or not he cared for me, I would be loyal to him.
Jenna sighed. “You’re too good, Sophie. I’m glad you’ve found someone to take care of you, though”
We chatted a bit more about her university life, and I learned that the school had assigned me a dormitory. I smiled to myself, already imagining what life would be like once I moved in—though Dominic had said I’d live in his house. I still couldn’t quite believe that.
After we said our goodbyes, the phone buzzed with a notification. I frowned, unsure how to navigate the screen, and called for Aunt Rosa to help me. She came in and quickly added my roommate’s contact details, smiling kindly as she handed the phone back.
I was pulled into a group chat with my classmates, though I quickly realized it might not have been the best idea. The chat was buzzing with rumors about me.
“Have you heard? She didn’t show up for the whole semester, but she wasn’t expelled! And now she suddenly get to show up in the middle of the semester. What is she, a princess, who will come and go by her choice!"
“Yeah, I heard she was sick. Convenient, huh?"
“I bet she’s got connections. Must be nice to have rich relatives.”
"God, I hate rich people! First they'll eat opportunities of other students and then think they own the school."
I turned off the phone. They were already gossiping about me. I wasn’t even back in school yet, and I already felt like an outsider. Would they think I was taking advantage of Dominic’s wealth and status?
Next few weeks I has my recovery complete. And I was able to walk normal again.
The next day, the assistant drove me to the apartment near the university after the discharge. The building was modern, clean, and so different from the home I had grown up in. Aunt Rosa showed me around, leading me to a cozy living room with soft furniture and warm lighting.
“This is your home now,” she said with a kind smile. “I live in the room next door. If you ever need anything, just call me.”
"Aunt Rosa, how many rooms are here?" I asked, my eyes scanning the living room. Everything felt so foreign, like it wasn't really my place to be here.
"There are four rooms in total," Aunt Rosa replied as she carefully folded a dish towel. "In addition to the master bedroom and the second bedroom, there's also a study and a children's room."
I paused, thinking it over. "I'll stay in the second bedroom for now," I said quietly, hoping she wouldn't question it.
Her eyebrows raised slightly. "You don’t want to stay with Mr. William?"
The heat rushed to my face in an instant. The thought of sharing a room, let alone a bed, with Dominic made me feel flustered. I had never even hugged or kissed a man before, much less shared such intimate space with someone. The idea alone made me uncomfortable, and my hands twisted nervously in my lap.
“I think it’s better if I stay in the second bedroom for now,” I mumbled, feeling awkward about the whole situation.
There was no way I could just suddenly start living as a 'wife' when everything between Dominic and me was so formal.
Aunt Rosa seemed to understand my discomfort and nodded. "Very well. I’ll take you to the second bedroom."
She guided me down the hall, and I noticed how spacious and clean everything was. Aunt Rosa told me that his grandma had arranged for the extra furniture before I moved in. The gesture was thoughtful, and I couldn’t help but feel a little warmer inside. Dominic, or perhaps his family, had gone to great lengths to ensure my comfort here.
Once in the second bedroom, Aunt Rosa made sure I was settled and then went to prepare lunch. I sat on the bed, still processing everything that had happened. This was my new home, but it didn’t feel like mine.
Not yet, anyway.
Lunch was simple and after I finished eating, Aunt Rosa brought me a glass of warm goat milk.
She placed it carefully in my hands, saying, "Mr. William specifically ordered this for you. It will give you some nutrition."
I glanced down at the milk, feeling a little touched. Goat milk was expensive, and its nutritional value was higher than that of cow’s milk. I hadn’t had much growing up—proper food, let alone something this healthy, was rare in my household.
The fact that Dominic had thought about my health moved me even if he acted cold all the time.
"Thank him for me," I said softly, holding the warm glass between my palms.
I pinched my nose and took a few sips, trying to get used to the taste. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it was a little different from what I was used to. Still, I drank it all, not wanting to waste his effort. He had been nothing but considerate, and I couldn’t let him down.
Just as I was finishing the glass, I heard a noise at the door. My heart skipped a beat.
"Mr. Williams is back," Aunt Rosa said calmly but my pulse quickened all the same.
As soon as Dominic stepped through the door, Aunt Rosa tactfully excused herself and moved to the next room, leaving the two of us alone in the apartment.
My nerves immediately kicked in. I grabbed the hem of my floral dress, twisting it between my fingers as I stood there awkwardly. “Sir," I said softly.
He glanced at me, his eyes briefly taking me in. I was wearing a white dress with little flowers, one of the few things I had left from before the accident.
I had just finished the glass of goat milk Aunt Rosa gave me, and I could still feel a little bit of it on my lips. It felt silly to think about how childish that must have looked. So, I quickly wiped it away.
"Have you finished buying everything?" He asked coldly.
I stiffened a little, unsure of what to say. "Not yet," I replied. My voice sounded stilted, almost mechanical.
Without hesitation, he said, "Let's go. I'll take you shopping." His tone didn’t leave room for argument.
I blinked, a bit taken aback. "Oh, no need," I quickly responded. "Just let Sir Daniel take me."
It made sense for his assistant to take me instead. He's been handling everything for ne all this time. But the moment those words left my mouth, I could feel everything turning into ice.
Dominic's expression hardened. "What did you just call him?" His voice was colder than I had ever heard it, and it sent a chill down my spine.
I froze. His tone was sharp, and I immediately regretted calling his assistant ‘Sir.’ My mind raced as I searched for the right response.
"S-Sorry, I meant Assistant Daniel," I stuttered. My voice was shaky, and I could barely meet his eyes.
"Call him Assistant Daniel from now on," he ordered, the coldness still lingering in his words.
I nodded quickly, not wanting to make things worse. "I understand," I answered cautiously, my heart beating faster.
"Come with me," he grabbed my hand tightly and began to drag me.
Dominic’s pov ;“Come with me,” I placed the empty glass back on the table. I took Sophie’s wrist without a second thought, guiding her out of the room. “I'll take you shopping.”Normally, I have a serious phobia of physical contact, especially with people who get too close, but oddly enough, holding her hand didn’t irritate me. Maybe it was because she wasn’t wearing heavy perfume, just a faint scent of flowers and milk. It was…almost tolerable."Sir, why are you taking me shopping in person?" Sophie asked out of curiosity. Her question caught me off guard, and I felt a twinge of irritation. "Don’t ask so many questions," I said sharply, making her flinch. In reality, I had been pulled away from a meeting, unable to ignore my grandmother's incessant phone calls about Sophie. "She’s your wife, if you don’t take care of her, who will?” That’s what she told me.Sophie’s face fell after my abrupt response, and she dropped her head, clearly disappointed. I clenched my jaw, feeling that fa
Brandon’s pov ;I stood outside the grand garden of William’s mansion. The Williams Group’s sudden withdrawal had sent shockwaves through the business world in London, and our company was now on the brink of collapse.I didn’t know how we had offended Dominic Williams, but it was serious—serious enough to cripple us.Stepping inside, I couldn’t help but feel anxiety and frustration. Dominic’s family had been our strongest ally for years, and now they had turned against us without warning. I was greeted by the sight of Madam, seated gracefully under a pavilion, sipping tea calmly.I approached her respectfully. "Madam, our family has cooperated with the Williams Group for many years. We've always done our part, never stepping out of line. Why has the investment been withdrawn so suddenly?"She didn’t answer right away, her gaze lingering on the teacup in her hands. "I stopped managing the company’s affairs a long time ago. You should ask Dominic about these matters.”I forced a tight s
Sophie’s pov ;That day when Sir left me with that cold glance, I felt like crying. His eyes, usually so distant, had grown even colder, and when they locked onto mine for that brief second, I felt an overwhelming chill seep through my skin. That glance made me feel like I was falling into an ice cellar, and I couldn't breathe for a long time after he walked out of the door. I stood there, frozen in place, my heart pounding in my chest as I stared at the spot where he had just been. What did I do wrong?Did I offend him in some way? I looked down at my skirt. Was it because I soiled my skirt? Did he think I was careless, or worse, slovenly? I bit my lip, fighting back the wave of embarrassment that threatened to overwhelm me. But I like to keep myself clean. But that look in his eyes made me question everything about myself.Aunt Rosa laid a comforting hand on my arm. "Don't think too much. Mr. Dominic must have something urgent at work so he left suddenly."I nodded slowly, but the u
Dominic’s pov ;The family doctor came over, giving Sophie a brief physical examination and checked her temperature. “Don’t worry, sir. She is fine. She just needs to take some antipyretic medicine and get plenty of rest.”I nodded. “Alright. I’ll ask my assistant to inform the finance department about your bonus.”The doctor waved his hands, flustered, “Oh no, no, that won’t be necessary. You’ve always been too generous, sir.”I ignored his protests. “You’ve been loyal to my family for years. And we reward loyalty.”“Thank you so much,” The doctor bowed slightly before excusing himself.Once the door clicked shut, I turned back to the girl lying on the couch. I had every intention of leaving her care to the nannies, but then she did something unexpected—her hand weakly reached for my sleeve.“Sir…don’t go,” she murmured, barely conscious, her eyes fluttering open for just a second.I paused, irritated. Does she think I’m here to coddle her?“Take the medicine,” I said curtly, pouring
Dominic’s pov ;"By the way, the boy from the Carpenter family came to visit today. He said a lot of kind things about us. I felt sorry for them, especially after losing their daughter, so I gave him a heads up."I clenched my jaw, feeling a wave of irritation rise up. Grandma’s soft heart had always been both a blessing and a curse for me. I understood where she was coming from—having a daughter herself, she couldn’t help but feel pity for the Carpenter family. But sympathy couldn’t erase the fact that the Carpenters had played their part in conspiring against us. No amount of apologies or sweet words would change that.“Grandma, I know you're kind-hearted. But don’t forget, they were willing to plot against you to get to our family.”She hesitated for a moment, clearly not wanting to antagonise me. “Dominic, it was the adopted daughter of the Carpenter family who acted on her own. There’s no need to blame the entire family for her actions.”I could hear the caution in her voice, but
Sophie’s pov ;After recovering, I decided to tell Dominic I wanted to go back to school."I'm afraid if I delay too long, I won't be able to keep up with the course," I explained, feeling a bit nervous. The University of Finance and Economics isn't just any university—it’s one of the top schools in the country, and its courses are known for being intense. Missing too many classes could mean failing, and I didn’t want to fall behind. He gave me a long look. "Are you sure you can go to class? I just heard you coughing."My throat was itching like crazy, but I resisted the urge to cough to show him I was fine. "I can take care of myself now, so I should have no problem going to school and attending classes."He seemed to consider my words for a moment before nodding. “Alright."Relief washed over me, but then I hesitated. "Should I go back to the dormitory?"He raised an eyebrow and smirked slightly. "Mrs. Williams, you want me to come back and stay alone in the empty house every day?"
Dominic’s pov ;I was buried in work, dealing with the endless responsibilities that came with running the Williams Group, when I heard a faint sound coming from Sophie’s room.At first, I thought it was nothing, but then I heard it again—a soft moan, followed by what sounded like murmurs. I stood up, walked to her door, and knocked.“Sophie?”There was no response, only more incoherent words. A strange feeling crept over me. I pushed the door open and saw her twisting in her bed, drenched in sweat, her face pale, as if she was trapped in a nightmare.“No, I won’t go…This is not my home.” She cried out in a hushed voice.I rushed over and grabbed her shoulders, shaking her gently.“Hey, wake up” But she remained locked in her dream. Her forehead was burning, far too hot. Damn it, why was she having another fever? Her body was still recovering from the cold, and now this. It was late—too late to call the doctor again.Though it's fine. I had enough knowledge to manage on my own, at lea
Sophie’s pov ;Sitting quietly in my seat, I could feel the warmth of the sunlight through the window.Despite the warmth outside, the atmosphere in the classroom felt frigid. I could hear the murmurs."Yesterday I thought she was just some ugly girl, but I didn’t expect her to be so pretty.”Another scoffed, "Pretty? If she’s such a beauty, why’s she wearing sunglasses? Of course to show off! Does she think she's a celebrity or something?”I could feel their eyes on me, judging. They weren’t whispering anymore—they wanted me to hear."She’s not a celebrity or even rich. How do I know? I saw her file. She applied as a poor student—three siblings, struggling family. No way she’s some rich kid with connections.""Then how’s she still here, getting all these special treatments? Must be that face, right?"Their insinuations hit me like a punch to the gut. I wasn’t naive. I knew exactly what they were implying."It’s obvious," another one chimed in, "She must’ve gotten close to some big sh
Sophie’s pov :ONE YEAR LATER ;The air was filled with laughter, music, and the sweet scent of flowers as Brandon and Ava’s wedding reception unfolded in full swing. The grand ballroom was beautifully decorated with cascading floral arrangements, twinkling lights, and elegant table settings. Everyone was dressed to the nines, and the atmosphere was nothing short of magical. I stood near the edge of the room, holding a glass of sparkling water, my heart swelling with happiness for my brother and his new bride.Dominic stood beside me, his hand resting gently on the small of my back. He looked as handsome as ever in his tailored black tuxedo, his presence commanding yet comforting. I couldn’t help but steal glances at him, still in awe of how lucky I was to have him by my side.As the evening progressed, Brandon and Ava took to the stage to thank everyone for coming. Brandon’s voice was warm and filled with gratitude, while Ava’s eyes sparkled with joy. They were the picture of happine
Brandon’s pov :As we stepped outside the hospital, my eyes immediately caught sight of an expensive car parked nearby. It was sleek, modern, and screamed luxury. Sophie’s face lit up the moment she saw it.“That’s my husband’s car!” she said, her voice filled with excitement.I raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. “Won’t you introduce me to him?” I asked, trying to sound casual.Sophie blushed but nodded, her cheeks turning a soft shade of pink. Before I could say anything else, the car door opened, and a man stepped out.Sophie didn’t hesitate. She ran to him, her steps light and joyful, and threw her arms around him in a tight hug. “Sir!” she exclaimed, her voice filled with affection.I froze. Sir? My eyes widened as I took in the man standing before me. Tall, impeccably dressed, with an aura of power and authority that was impossible to ignore. And then it hit me—this wasn’t just any man. This was Dominic Williams. My throat tightened, and I choked on my own breath. This was the
Brandon's pov :I stood in the study, my arms crossed, as Rey walked in nervously. She looked around, her eyes darting between me and my father, Jason. The tension in the room was palpable, and I could tell she knew something was wrong."Brother, what do you want from me?" Rey asked, her voice trembling slightly.I didn’t waste any time. "Rey, why is there an error in Bella’s DNA test result?"Her eyes widened, and she stammered, "This... I don’t know either. Maybe the organization made a mistake."I couldn’t help but sneer. "Mistaken? Do you know that if such an institution makes a mistake in the appraisal results, it will face a claim of millions?"In other words, these strictly regulated institutions never make mistakes. Rey’s excuse was flimsy at best."I asked John to do this. Could it be that she..." Rey tried to shift the blame to the servant, but I wasn’t having it."I just asked John and she said that when she went to the café to get a cup, there were two cups on the table,"
Ava’s povI watched as Rey tried to play her little games, but she seemed to have forgotten one crucial detail—Christopher is my biological brother. How could an outsider like her possibly sow discord between siblings who share the same blood? It was almost laughable.Christopher glanced at her indifferently, his expression cold and unreadable. "Oh," he said simply, dismissing her attempt to gain his sympathy.Rey was left speechless, her carefully prepared words stuck in her throat. I hid my smile behind my teacup, taking a sip to conceal my amusement. My brother’s ability to see through people’s intentions was sharper than mine. Even he could see through Rey’s White Lotus act."Mr. Carpenter, I have something to tell you. Can we go out and talk?" I asked, turning to Brandon."Sure," he replied, standing up and following me out to the courtyard. As we walked, I noticed Rey’s anxious expression. She clearly wanted to follow us, but she couldn’t just leave Christopher alone in the room
Sophie’s pov :I was sitting on the lawn, still feeling a bit sore from last night’s… activities with the Sir, when I heard a familiar voice call out to me."Bella, I didn’t expect you to be so good at fighting green tea."I turned around, surprised and delighted to see Ava walking toward me. "Ava! Why are you here?"She grinned and sat down next to me. "Luckily, I came, otherwise I would have missed your green tea show."I blushed, realizing she must have seen me earlier, wearing all that jewelry to make a point. Embarrassed, I started taking off the necklaces and rings, putting them back into my bag.Ava raised an eyebrow. "Bella, you look so good wearing it. Why are you taking it off?"I groaned, feeling my cheeks heat up even more. "Don’t make fun of me. I was just trying to piss them off."Who would wear so many jewels out of nowhere? It was way too heavy, and my neck and fingers were already tired. I couldn’t wait to take it all off.Ava chuckled, clearly understanding my person
Sophie’s pov :The next day, I walked into school with an awkward posture, my legs feeling sore and unsteady. I was terrified that someone would notice, but of course, my friends did."Bella, what's wrong with you?" Carolyn asked, her voice filled with concern as she eyed me carefully. My face flushed red, and I quickly came up with an excuse. "It's nothing. I had a leg cramp when I slept yesterday. It hurts a little."Carolyn frowned, still looking worried. "Please sit down and have a rest. You have physical education class later. What are you going to do?"I sighed, already dreading the thought of running or doing any kind of physical activity. "Let me talk to the teacher and see if I can ask for leave."When the teacher arrived, I used my menstruation as an excuse, and to my surprise, she granted me leave. Normally, this teacher is very strict and rarely allows students to skip PE, no matter how unwell they claim to be. But for some reason, she was particularly lenient with me. May
Dominic’s pov :After coming out to pour a glass of water, I couldn’t shake the growing discomfort in my chest. The house felt too quiet, too empty, even though Sophie was just in the other room.I glanced at the clock—it was just past ten. In the past, the little girl would sit on the sofa and wait for me to get off work, no matter how late it was.Even if I told her countless times not to wait, she’d stubbornly stay up, her eyes drooping with sleep but her determination unwavering. She’d always greet me with that soft, sleepy smile, and it made coming home worth every second. But now? She was already asleep.I frowned, the wrinkles between my brows deep enough to pinch a fly to death. Was this what they meant when they said couples eventually lose their passion and become more like family? We’ve only been married for less than a year, and already she’s so… perfunctory with me. What would happen in the future? The thought made my chest tighten uncomfortably. I didn’t like it. Not one
Sophie’s pov :It all started with the rumors on the forum. Someone had posted that I, Sophie, had married a poor and ugly man. Honestly, I wasn’t angry. People say all sorts of things, and I’ve learned to brush them off.But Edwin, my cousin, couldn’t stand it. He was furious. How could anyone call Sir—Mr. Williams—poor and ugly? Edwin thought the people spreading these rumors were blind and stupid. He decided to take matters into his own hands. One day after school, Edwin secretly followed me. When I ran toward the Sir like a butterfly, Edwin snapped a few photos. He posted them on the forum, but to protect Sir’s identity, he only released blurry side profile photos. Still, the Sir’s tall, straight figure and his aloof aura were enough to win over a lot of female fans. The post was titled: Rumors Debunked: Sophie’s Boyfriend is a Handsome Guy! His Net Worth is a Mystery, He is Definitely Not a Poor and Incompetent Man!As soon as the photos were released, the forum exploded. Comment
Rey’s pov :I walked into Amanda’s room, my expression carefully arranged into one of concern. She was sitting by the window, her face pale and her eyes red-rimmed. It was clear she’d been crying. Good. The more upset she was, the easier it would be to manipulate her. I needed her to deal with Sophie for me, and for that, she had to be motivated.“Amanda, what’s wrong with you?” I asked, my voice soft and sympathetic. I sat down beside her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. She turned to me, tears silently streaming down her face. My mind raced. What had happened?“Why are you crying?” I pressed, my tone gentle but probing. “Who bullied you? Was it Sophie?”Amanda closed her eyes, as if the mere mention of Sophie’s name pained her. She didn’t answer immediately, and I felt a flicker of impatience. I needed her to talk, to give me something to work with. Finally, she spoke, her voice trembling. “Rey, tell me, should I not like Dominic? I saw the pictures… he brought that neckl
