What he was telling her was that she had to pretend that she had a relationship with him after his wife died. She and Nicholas lost touch after their one nightstand and when she discovered that she was pregnant, he was nowhere to be found. Then, she met a man and married him. He gave names to the children even though he knew they were not his children.

The aim of this pretension was to convince his father that Roseanne was the mother of his children so they could get the protection of the Hart family. If his father found out that they were Nathaniel's children, things would get more messy. Moreover, it was the best way to prevent Anne's identity too. His father must not know that she was Anne Rose and she had children with Nathaniel.
