"Don't ever call me again!" Emily yelled as she got out of a car belonging to a guy who turned out to be the worst date ever.

He had offered to give her a lift home in his Mustang, but instead of driving he seemed more focused on sliding his hand under her dress.

Emily was not looking for a serious relationship, but she also didn't want some average one-night stand with a guy who seemed interested in her only in the sense of her being a warm female body.

The wind blew cold, slapping tiny drops of rain onto her face. She did not regret escaping from that creep's car, but now she had to walk home. She was in the middle of downtown Vancouver, and it would be nearly impossible to catch a taxi. She walked quickly to avoid being stopped by other smarta**es like the guy whose car she had just jumped out of.

It's not like she had extremely high expectations, Emily thought moodily as she walked past drunk and excited nightclub goers. She wanted what every girl in her twenties probably wanted: someone she could have some laughs with, who liked her personality, who made an effort... and she wouldn't mind if he good in bed. Why was it she only met men who were either obsessed with her or just wanted to use her for sex? Was there no happy medium?

And speaking of men who were obsessed with her, who was that tall figure walking behind her?

No... it couldn't be. This night had already turned out disappointing, and there is no way it could get worse. She was just being paranoid. Josh wasn't here. He was miles away.

The echo of her high-heeled boots grew louder as she left the towers and clubs of downtown and began to cross the long bridge that stretched across the bay.

She looked back just to reassure herself that it wasn't Josh following her. She nearly lost her footing.

It was him. The boy she thought was cute when they were in high school, but now five years later did not seem so cute anymore because he never stopped following her. She recognized his spiky hair and slightly hunched posture.

Emily tried not to panic even though her heart rate sped up to what seemed like a million beats per minute.

She was already on the bridge, and she decided to cross it. Maybe Josh wouldn't approach her this time. If she could just keep walking at the same pace, it would be fine.

Some drunk girls ran past her, giggling loudly. She looked back again, and this time it seemed like Josh was catching up to her. Had he been waiting, watching her all this time just to catch her alone?

He had never been violent yet, but Emily suspected he could snap once he finally realized she was not interested in him. No matter how much she tried to avoid him, he never seemed to get the message.

If only she could have caught a taxi, she would have been halfway home by now, but none of the yellow cars passing by had their light on to signal that they were available.

Emily really did not want to talk to Josh. Maybe even riding in the creep's car would have been preferable. There was something so frustrating about the way Josh wouldn't leave her alone, wouldn't take no for an answer.

Her anger drover her on to walk faster. Josh made his way onto the bridge and was getting closer. She could almost make out his facial features in the yellow overhead lights.

Even if she ran now, she might not be able to get away fast enough, but anyway she hated the idea of running. She was so tired of feeling like the frightened victim. There had to be another way to deal with him.

Then she saw the lone man standing in the middle of the bridge, looking out over the water, and a brilliant idea struck her. At least she hoped it was brilliant.

About as tall as Josh but with a broader frame, this man looked like he could kick some a**. Not that he would have to do anything. Just the sight of him alone would probably scare Josh away. Men seemed to respect other men more than they respected women. Once they saw that a woman was 'taken' they would usually back off.

The man did not react when Emily stopped beside him, so she touched his shoulder, acting as if they were old friends. His fashionable wool coat was actually really pleasant to the touch.

"Hey, great to see you!" she said, making big gestures that Josh would be sure to perceive even from a distance.

When the man turned towards her, the look of unbearable pain and despair in his eyes actually frightened her for a moment. She had rarely seen anyone look so vulnerable, and she realized she must have caught him deep in thought or completely consumed with his suffering. The beauty of his eyes, green with just a hint of blue, stunned her almost as much as his anguished expression.

It seemed a contradiction that such a remarkable-looking man should have such a terribly sad gaze, his dark brown hair speckled with raindrops and his long lashes unmoving as if he was too tired to blink. She almost forgot about Josh as she grew mesmerized by the stranger's handsome face.

The man didn't say anything as he looked at her, probably still deep in his own world. Emily wasn't sure if he was just crazy or on drugs, but at this point she had few other options, and she tried to press on with her plan.

"I'm sorry," she said, "could you do me a really big favor? I need you to act like you know me. There's a guy following me. Please?"

The man didn't say anything for another second that seemed to last a lifetime. Then his eyebrows drew together in a look of distaste, and Emily thought he was going to tell her to go away and stop bothering him. She couldn't blame him, really. This city was full of con artists who tried to "seek help" from strangers, usually to get money or to trick them into giving away personal information.Suddenly she felt the touch of a soft leather glove on her fingers. He took her hand!"Of course," said the stranger, his voice hoarse. "I hate creeps who follow women to intimidate them.""You don't know the half of it," Emily said, feeling instant relief, not only due to his help but also his sympathy for her situation."Is it the guy in a long jacket with spiky hair?" he asked, looking over her shoulder.Emily nodded. "Is he coming closer?" She couldn't dare to look. It would be better to pretend she didn't even know Josh was here. It would make her date with this guy seem more realistic,

The restaurant was called Mangiamo, and Emily had heard it was one of the best in the city. She caught a glimpse of fine crystal glasses and classical paintings. It looked so tempting. The only problem was, she was a junior designer, not a millionaire. "Uh... do you mind if we choose something simpler?" she asked. "This is way out of my price range.""Do I not look like a man to you? You would insult me if you even mention paying," Byron said sternly. Well, that was quite a difference between him and the date she had earlier, who had been happy to split the bill with her, even though it was a first date and he might have at least tried to impress her by attempting to pay the whole thing. "But it's 1 am already; it's closing," Emily said, noting the restaurant's hours clearly written in the front window. "Not if I can help it," Byron said calmly, "Come on, Emily Danzi. I need a real Italian's opinion on the food here."There were only a couple of customers inside, and they we

"Let's not talk about him anymore," Emily said. "He's a pathetic human being." If Byron had any more compliments, she was hoping to hear those. "You're right," Byron said. "Tell me what you like to do."Emily was feeling a little tipsy, and she happily began to list off all the things she liked."I like designing hair clips, walking dogs," she began."Me too," Byron said. "I like dogs. I don't know how to design hair clips."Emily laughed, accidentally spitting out small bits of food as her fork clattered to the floor. When he said she was unforgettable, she hoped it wasn't because of her bad table manners. Byron seemed unfazed, and he simply called Amadeo over to bring another fork. They went on talking long after they finished their food. In her tipsy mind, Emily wondered how an amazing man like this was still available. He wasn't wearing a wedding ring. But of course, she couldn't assume he was single. He might still have a girlfriend. Whatever it was, she didn't want to k

When Emily woke up the next morning, the events of the previous night seemed like a figment of her imagination. The date with the rich business guy was nice, though. It made her smile as she got out of bed and hurried to get ready for work.In the sobering light of day, she decided it was for the best that nothing futher came of it. Byron may have been charming and heartstoppingly handsome, but his mood swings were not a good sign.Emily grew less and less starry-eyed when the reality of Josh being in town sank in. She didn't know if he was here on a visit or if he had decided to move here just to stalk her, but it was a good idea to report him to the police, or at least get some advice. When she got to the office, she looked for her friend Pam, who worked in sales. They were old university friends, and Pam knew all the details of Emily's life. She would probably love to hear about last night, but sadly she was away at a sales meeting.Emily already knew Pam would be telling her t

Instead of finding the fire exit, Emily nearly ran right into Gordon, the company's assistant manager. "Ah, Emily, I was just looking for you," he said, not even noticing that she was crying and panicking. "I'd like you to correct a few things in the last prototype.""I can't right now," she said quickly. "Sorry, I have to go."But it was too late. Josh appeared on the scene."You think acting like a pea-brained party girl makes you look cool?" he shouted. "Well, it doesn't!"Emily turned away and tried to find somewhere to hide. The assistant manager looked at her, then at the raving man who was invading the office space."I hope you're happy!" Josh went on, "You've made me come all the way here!" He grabbed a chair from the nearest cubicle and threw it against the wall. A few people screamed, while others ran from the room."Young man, please leave the office immediately!" the assistant manager said, trying to look intimidating. Emily finally caught sight of the exit. S

Emily may have been unlucky in love, but she was extremely confident about her career. She could always find another company to work for, but first she needed to go to the police. This Josh situation was getting out of control.Just like most of the people at work, the officers at the station were very sympathetic when she told them the whole story. "It's a tough city to live in, even without being stalked by an ex," said the sergeant, a tired-looking woman in her forties. The whole process of getting a protection order would take much longer than Emily expected, and she would have to appear in court to testify. On the bright side, many people had witnessed the incident of aggression in the office. It would likely be enough to convince the judge that Josh was dangerous."In the meantime," said the sergeant, "you could try to think of a safety plan. Have all your most important personal belongings quickly accessible. If you're really feeling threatened, you could move to a women's

As Emily entered her apartment, she rushed to the window to see if the limo was still there. Just like last night, it was already gone. Now instead of feeling a tiny twinge of regret, all she felt was relief. Her roommate Delsie was watching TV and looked a bit surprised at Emily's running around the place."Hey, is everything okay?" she called out."I think so..." Emily said. She had been in survival mode all day, and this latest encounter made her go into fight or flight mode. She tried to calm her breathing. Things were far from okay, but at least they were manageable for now. Also, she didn't want to get into too many details with Delsie, who could be catty at times."You're being a little mysterious there," Delsie said playfully. "Did you meet someone new? You must have got in pretty late last night."Emily looked inside the fridge to see if she had anything for a comforting dinner. On second thought, she was tired and found a ready-made freezer meal instead. She didn't kno

She knew Pam would be outraged when she told her about rejecting the billionaire. Emily felt such a strong current of desire running throughout her frame. It was always the most overwhelming sensation, being engulfed in the torrent of his kisses. It was one of those times when she was reminded how fierce and powerful her love for him really was. Sometimes day-to-day life interfered and made her forget that there was a man by her side who would do anything for her. When he showed how much he loved her, whether it was with grand gestures and romantic trips or simply the way he kissed her, it felt like the rebirth of a love that was too beautiful for words.Holding him in her arms and knowing how much he desired her nearly made her faint every time. It enchanted every single cell of her being, making the rest of the world a mere blur compared to the hot passion coursing through her body."I love you," she murmured as they rested in the sumptuous bed. "Thanks for always being there for me.""You don't have to thank me," he said, gazing back at her with a look fi

A few days later, Emily woke up to a grey and rainy day, but she was eager to get out of bed. It was the day of their trip. Byron was already up, pulling a tight t-shirt over his muscular torso. He looked way too awake for the earliness of the hour."Today's dress code: motorcycle gear," he said, eyes shining eagerly."It's a road trip?" Emily exclaimed."Yes indeed!"They could have flown anywhere in the world on their private jet, but for some reason Emily was more excited about a trip to the nearby mountains, just like they had always done. It reminded her of the early days of their relationship when they swiftly fell in love, and she had fallen in love with everything about this landscape too. And in some ways, not that much had changed."It's going to be a rugged journey," Byron said, "but don't worry, I've prepared some amenities at our destination.""What is that supposed to mean?" she asked."You don't need to pack too much stuff, just your basic clothes."They left t

Byron poured a lot of funds into the construction of the wave pool, and a few months later, it was built and ready for use.The building looked sleek and contemporary on the outside, while inside it was a warm oasis away from the autumn chill.Mandy swam and frolicked in the waves with her friends, stopping only to sip a bit of juice, then she was back in the water for more splashing. The high ceiling allowed natural light to come in through its numerous skylights, giving the space the ambience of a warm beach. The wave pool was definitely a hit. Emily and Byron watched the kids, lounging on deck chairs by the water."It's not quite as relaxing as a real beach, but it'll do," Byron said as the echoes of children's voices bounced around the vast space. Ripples of sunlight reflected off the water and played over his face."The kids don't seem to care if it's relaxing or not," Emily said, observing them race each other in the waves. "But as long as they're happy…""Do you think Man

"Can I do it when I'm six?" Mandy asked, not letting go of the idea of being on television."No," Emily said firmly."Can I do it when I'm seven?""No.""Ten?""Maybe." Emily hoped the whole discussion would be forgotten after that many years. She never wanted her child on a so-called talent show which was probably rigged anyway.Luckily, Mandy was distracted by her friend, and the two girls went to play outside."She's so talented," Katie said, "You should take her to a music academy. I'll bet she's going to be a sensation."Emily shook her head. "She's way too young. Please don't get excited. I know it seems like showing her talent to the world is a good thing, but too many child stars have started out on brilliant careers only to burn out as teenagers. I definitely don't want that for Mandy.""You're right, Talent Quest is a bit of a freak show," Katie said, "but don't you want her to at least learn as much as she can to reach her full potential?""She's got all the time i

Emily was so disappointed she was hardly even tempted by the creamy pasta."I promised I wouldn't destroy them," he said, a sly smile playing about his lips, "and I don't intend to. I've even kept Simone around, though in a slightly less senior role. She couldn't be induced to resign. The woman is very stubborn, but I know you don't like us to make enemies…""So you took over the company she was running, and you don't think she'd be mad?""Not as mad as I was when you told me she dropped your products," Byron retorted, "But believe it or not she's actually okay with the takeover. She took off her shoes and collapsed on the living room couch."Lady said the 'f word'," Mandy recalled. Byron raised his eyebrows. "I know I'm not allowed to say it," Mandy continued, "but she didn't know that.""What the heck happened over there?" Byron asked."Ugh! Emily was in a playful mood the next morning. She didn't want to get out of bed, even though she had an important meeting. The date night had ended in a rather passionate episode. Mandy was already asleep by the time they got back home, and they made the most of their time. It was not exactly rare for them to have alone time, but maybe it didn't happen as often as before."You're very giggly," Byron noted. "I thought you'd be tired after last night."He was a bit sleepy but didn't mind indulging her desires when she kissed his face and body all over."Thanks for helping me feel relaxed when I should be nervous," Emily said as she got up to get dressed. "Simone Cather is coming in for a meeting today. I've never worked with her before, but I hear she can be difficult. I'm going to bring Mandy with me to win her over with cuteness."Simone had just taken over leadership of Charmers, the biggest fashion retail store in the country. Emily was able to run some errands while Sylvia gave Mandy her first piano lesson. She was glad to have a bit of time to shop, and Sylvia insisted on not having anyone interfere in her tutelage anyway. Emily wondered how Sylvia would cope being left alone with her granddaughter. She had been out a couple of hours, and she hoped they hadn't killed each other.Contrary to her expectations, the house was quiet when she entered. Sylvia and Mandy were deep in conversation over tea and cookies."Mommy! Mommy!" Mandy ran over to greet her."How was your lesson?" Emily asked."I learned to play piano!""She did fairly well," Sylvia said. This sounded like high praise from someone who was more used to criticizing.Mandy sat down at the piano with very good posture to show Emily what she'd learned. She played Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. It was a simple piece that most kids started with, but Emily was amazed that Mandy played it so flawlessly. She kept up a steady rhythmic accompanimen

Unschooling was a little harder to commit to than Emily had imagined. She knew that there were plenty of learning opportunities for Mandy at home, but sometimes work demands, or just wanting a bit of time to herself made her reluctant to teach the kid.It was early September, and the unschooling had been going on for a week. Emily was working on her sketches in her home office while Mandy watched an educational program in the cinema room. It didn't seem like too much time had passed, but when Emily looked up from her sketch, the house felt unusually quiet. She went into the cinema room and saw that Mandy must have finished her program and dutifully turned the screen off. She was an amazingly responsible child in some respects."Mandy!" Emily called, "Where are you, Mandikins?"An eerie silence filled the large house. Emily checked all the rooms, but her daughter was nowhere to be found. Surely she wouldn't have gone outside all by herself? For a chilling moment, she thought the
