“A friend?” Harriet asked in a low voice that almost went unheard by the maid. ‘Who could it be?’ She thought and dashed out without waiting for the maid to finish her sentence. When she arrived at the sitting room, she was both confused and angry as she saw Evelyn James, her husband’s mistress, sitting on the sofa with her legs crossed. “Evelyn? What are you doing here?” Harriet struggled to maintain her calm. How could she when she was in the presence of the woman who ruined her marriage? “Harriet! Good to see you! I know you are shocked by my visit, especially with everything happening.” Evelyn said, faking a sad expression at the latter part of her sentence. Harriet was mad! Red with anger and furious. She had barely recovered from the divorce, and now Evelyn was here to do what? Add to her wounds? “How dare you come here? Do you have no shame?!” Harriet nearly raised her voice, but because of her mother, who was upstairs, she controlled herself. “Oh, Harriet. I did not come to fight you. We needed to talk and have an…understanding.” Evelyn held Harriet’s arm and pleaded desperately, her eyes filled with fake tears. “Understanding? What sort of understanding do we need to have? You are my husband’s mistress, in case you have forgotten. You are a homewrecker!” Harriet was shaking in anger. “We are in love!” Evelyn screamed, tears forming in her eyes as she continued her Oscar-worthy act. “I’m sorry, Harriet, but I and Damien love each other. We have always been in love. Unfortunately, he is married, but you must know he doesn’t love you. He never has. Please, Harriet. You must understand.” Evelyn cried, but Harriet stared at her indifferently. She knew Evelyn so well. The lady was only putting on an act. “I never wanted to hurt you. It was never my intention, but love can’t be stopped. Wouldn’t it be better if you put an end to this now? You can find someone else who will love you. Maybe Adrian, since you are already sleeping with him.” Evelyn said, and Harriet raised her hands to stop her but stopped halfway. Evelyn’s words had hurt her deeply. What hurt her more was that she was right about Damien not loving her. “Do all of us a favor, Harriet. Sign the paper. If you truly love him, please set him free.” Evelyn said pitifully. Harriet had no mood for this conversation anymore. She could only look at her in exhaustion. Somehow, it irritated Evelyn, and she became more aggressive. “How many times do I need to tell you? You can’t get it, right?” Evelyn rolled her eyes and changed her strategy. “He never loved you, and we are in love. Why can’t you sign the paper and leave quietly?” Evelyn stressed forcefully again. Harriet didn’t say anything, and she just watched the show coldly. “You think you will win? Still thinking he will change his mind?” Evelyn taunted. Harriet didn’t fall apart as expected but gave her a level look with her arms crossed over her chest. “Don’t you think you are pathetic? Let me tell you. He will never believe you, and I don’t even need to try to make him mine.” Evelyn said spitefully. “So why don’t we see Damien take it?” Harriet held up her phone with a sneer, warning that she could let Damien know all about Evelyn, and Evelyn’s eyes widened in horror. “Get out of my house, now!” Harriet ordered with bloodshot eyes, and Evelyn slowly backed away, but before she left, she heard Harriet say. “By the way, I have already signed the papers. You can have that cheating bastard. You deserve each other, after all. Have a pleasant married life with him.”
