I kept my eyes on the apartment building, waiting for Katniss' car to arrive, but what caught my attention instead was Mr. Corleone’s car pulling up. As soon as it stopped in front of the building, Katniss rushed out and dashed inside.

I understood why she reacted like that. I felt the same panic earlier when I couldn’t find Giselle. If I, who wasn’t even part of Giselle’s life before this, could feel like my world was collapsing, I could only imagine what Katniss was going through. She’s been with Giselle since the moment she was in her womb.

Then, three more people stepped out of the car—Mr. Corleone, of course, along with Giselle’s nanny, and someone I recognized as one of her teachers. I’d seen that face a few times at the school.

A wave of heat surged through me as I watched how effortlessly Mr. Corleone managed Katniss’ personal matters. But right now, it wasn’t the time for me to get involved.

With the certainty that Giselle was safe, I turned my focus to another issue t

We’ll see whether she’s your child or not. But I’m certain—that brat is NOT yours! So stop acting like she is! I’m sick of watching you play house with her!” She spat the words with venom.I clenched my fists, trying to control the anger surging through me. “I don’t understand your logic, Renata. I’ve already told you—"“Don’t be stupid! You need undeniable proof if you want to claim her as yours! I know your father is breathing down your neck for an heir, but just because she looks like you doesn’t mean anything. You need solid evidence!” she cut me off, her voice laced with frustration.I took a deep breath, trying to keep my voice steady. “You know I need Giselle, Renata. Don’t be like this. You’re being unreasonable. You know the threats my father made. Why are you constantly sabotaging everything?”“If I lose my

Her expression was furious, but her lips were sealed tight. She looked like she had no idea how to respond to Renata’s words, and that only made me more curious about what she would say next.I could sense the internal battle raging inside Katniss—the struggle to find the right words was all too obvious."See? You can’t answer, right?" Renata sneered, her arrogance cutting through the tension like a blade.Katniss finally snapped. "What does it matter to you if Giselle is his child?" she shot back, venom in her voice. "You have no shame. After ruining my life, you come barging back in when you see Giselle."She stormed toward me, her eyes blazing with fury. "You’re the one who refused to believe I was pregnant with your child. Remember how you threw me away like trash?" Her finger jabbed to

I had no idea what she meant, but I couldn’t focus on it because my head was pounding.“Let’s go to the bedroom,” Renata said, helping me walk as my legs felt weak from the throbbing headache.“Here, drink this,” she handed me a glass of water, which I gulped down immediately.“Just sleep,” she insisted.I closed my eyes, but flashes of unfamiliar memories haunted me. “Katniss...” I murmured.“Don’t say her name,” Renata snapped, her tone harsh.“Don’t think too much. Just sleep, and your headache will go away,” she said coldly. I glanced at her, noticing her clenched fists hanging by her sides.“I got memories about her,” I said, confused.“No. That’s just a hallucination,” Renata replied quickly, almost too quickly.“I’ll go to the pharmacy to get the usual medicine for your headaches. Katniss"How could the result be negative? That's impossible! She’s your biological daughter!"I wasn't seeking validation from James, but it felt like a slap in the face. The lie would make them think their accusations from the past were true—that it was never slander. For heaven’s sake!I could swear on anyone's name that I never, not once, slept with another man. I never even stepped foot in a nightclub, or any sinful place to get drunk and lose myself in such a way that I’d end up with a stranger. I avoided all of that at every cost.I was a good wife, a good daughter-in-law. I stayed home, helping with everything my mother-in-law and husband needed. I only ever left the house if they ordered me to.So how could the result be negative now? Why was I getting those accusatory glares again? It was just like before—Renata’s smug satisfaction written all over her face, thrilled that the result aligned with her twisted desires. And James—God, I stared at him for what felt like forever.

And the lies from my family?I stopped dead in my tracks, forcing Renata to stop with me. I carefully peeled her hand off my arm.“What is it? Why are you stopping?” she asked, panic flashing in her eyes.“What Katniss said back there... It doesn’t line up with what you and Mom told me when I came out of the coma.”Renata froze. Her silence said it all.“You’ve been lying to me,” I said, my voice sharp, cutting through the tension.“We’re still at the hospital, James. I was too tired to deal with their drawn-out explanations. My patience was thin, and I wasn’t in the mood for pointless conversation.Emma exchanged a glance with Renata. That look—what the hell were they trying to say to each other with just their eyes? It felt like they were sharing some secret I wasn’t privy to.Emma turned back to me and reached out, stroking my hair. The gesture was supposed to be comforting, but it felt staged, artificial. Still, I didn’t argue. My head was pounding, and I had no energy for a fight. All I wanted was answers. Something told me I’d missed out on a lot, and I needed to know what."Just explain it," I demanded again, my voice edged with frustration. But Emma shook her head gently. JamesAnother period of months passed since that night until a new piece of information altered everything in our lives.Katniss was pregnant. The pregnancy test revealed itself to me as she held it while her hands shook and tears formed in her eyes. “James… I’m pregnant again.”I stood motionless while staring at the bright pink lines that clearly appeared on the test. James Hours pass. I don’t know if it’s still the same day or if thousands of years have gone by since I made that decision. I stand here, staring at the white walls of the recovery room, unable to stop replaying every warning from the doctor over and over in my mind. Each word echoes like a broken record:If we save her, the baby won’t survive. If we save the baby, Katniss may not make it.Those words—those gut-wrenching words—keep pounding in my head.
