DASHIELL
I twirled the pen in my hand as I went through the lists for the summer gala. A knock on the door interrupted me. Lilith walked in with a smile, holding a mug of coffee in hand as she strode over to me. “Hello, Darling.” “Oh.” I blinked, smiling as I got up from my chair. “Hello, sweetheart. How was your trip?” I stepped around the table, to her side. “I'm not happy, you realise that, right???” She dropped the coffee on my desk before turning to confront me, pouting. “Why?” Puzzled, I watched her walk over to me and wrap her hands around my waist. She placed her head on my chest and peered up at me. “Why didn't you call me during my trip? I was expecting your calls, you know?” She pursed her lips, sulking like a kid. “Oh, that?” I smiled as I removed some strands of hair from her face. “I figured you were busy, which was why I didn't call.” “Busy?” She removed her head from my chest and stepped back, frowning. “How busy could I have been not to pick up your calls?” She asked, folding her arms. “Come on, darling.” I closed the distance between us and hugged her. “Don't be sad, okay? You are back, and that's all that matters. The past is… Well, it's history.” There was no use telling her I spent the entire week acting like the best dad in the entire world — to my baby, of course. “Promise you won't do it again?” “I won't.” Breaking from the hug, I took her hand in mine and led her towards the couch, careful so she didn't step on her gown, which was sweeping the ground. I made her sit on the couch before I sat next to her, smiling. “So, how was your trip?” “Good, I guess.” “How are your parents?” “Good.” She smiled, sitting up. “They asked of you. Mum was wondering when you will come to visit. You know, I told them of your proposal, and they were thrilled about it. Dad can't wait to meet you.” She looked excited about that, and I felt bad, knowing I would make her sad with my response. I rubbed the back of my neck and nervously smiled at her as she told me about her trip and all that happened on her way there. “Dash?” She frowned. “Mmm?” I blinked, wondering why she called my name. “What's it?” “Why are you silent? Are you okay?” She placed her right palm on my forehead, frowning. “I'm good, it's just….” I puffed out a breath, trying to think of how to break the news to her. I knew it was time to tell her the wedding I promised wouldn't work. At least not for the next nine months. “There's something I have to tell you,” I started, my tone grave. She must have noticed how serious I looked because she placed her hand over mine as she stared at me. Her expression was one of fear, almost like she could tell what was going through my mind at that moment. “What's it?” Her voice was almost a whisper. “Nova is pregnant,” I dumped the bombshell. “What? Impossible!” She got up from the couch. “How… Didn't….” “It happened.” I peered up at her. “I found out a week ago before you travelled and —” “Why didn't you tell me?” She asked, interrupting me. “Was this the reason you didn't call?” “No, that's not it.” I got up from the couch and took her hand in mine, peering into her eyes. “I wasn't lying when I told you why I didn't call. As for Nova being pregnant, I didn't tell you about it, so it wouldn't affect your trip,” I explain, hoping she would understand my reasons. I watched her take a deep breath, waiting for her to say something, but she didn't. She kept silent for some minutes as she glared at me. I couldn't tell what was going through her head because she kept her expression hooded. “Lilith?” “What about the divorce? You are going through with it, right?” She peered at me, waiting for my response. “Not at the moment” I responded, letting go of my hold on her. “Why?” She stared at her hands before her gaze lifted to my face. “You promised me, didn't you?” Though her expression was neutral, her voice gave her thoughts away. She sounded like she was about to cry. “I'm sorry,” I apologized. “She has my baby in the womb. I can't do it now. Not until she gives birth.” “What if me, then? Are you going to dump me all because of that?” She demanded, glaring at me. “Are you willing to forget about me just because she's pregnant?” She closed the distance between us. “If you want kids, I can give you as many as you want. I'm a fertile woman.” "You are still the one I love, Lilith." I placed a kiss on her left cheek. "She's just a surrogate for me. After she gives birth, I will take the kid and kick her to the curb." "Really?" She peered up at me, pouting. “Of course. I just have a request for you.” “A request?” “I still want to make you the mother of my kids. Can you wait until she gives birth? I will divorce her then, and make you my wife,” I promised. “Why not now?” She demanded, frowning. “Because I can't. Have you forgotten about the will I told you about?” I reached towards her to caress her left cheek. “All I ask is just nine months. After she gives birth, I will break up with her and marry you. Then you can take care of the kid with me.” I had thought about that and mulled over it for a week before I arrived at this conclusion. She looked as if she wanted to argue, but she didn't. Instead, she nodded with a smile. “I will stay for you then.” “Thank you.” Smiling, I hugged her. “Thanks for understanding me.” “Anything for you, darling. Anything for you.” She hugged my waist tight. “It's just nine months of my time. I will wait for as long as you ask me to.” "No, I won't make you wait for that long." I placed both hands on her cheeks and made her look up. "We will still be together until she gives birth, okay?" "Mmm!" Nodding, she smiled before leaning in to whisper, "Congratulations on being a father. I'm so happy for you."NOVAI locked the door, and left the house, waving at the security men by the gate as I hurried out. Though Dashiell asked me to let one of them drive me to Mama Kaka's house, I opted to use a taxi. This way, I could walk a little, to exercise before heading over to her house. I had just walked a distance from the house when a red Camaro stopped in front of me. Frowning, I walked past it, humming under my breath. A few steps away from the car, I heard my name.Whirling around, a scowl came over my face when I noticed who it was. Lilith, the bitch. She was leaning on the hood of the red Camaro, twirling the keys in her right index as her gaze levelled on me. I could see the contempt in that stare. She looked like she was sizing me up to know where to start from."What's it? What are you doing here?" I demanded, surprised to see her close to the house. Was meeting Dashiell in the office not enough for her?"Dashiell sent me to pick you up," she said so casually like this was something
“What?” I frowned, furrowing my brows. “What did you just say?” “What you thought you heard.” She stopped a few paces away from me. “Dashiell wants you to get rid of the baby,” she repeated. “Impossible.” Instinctively, I placed my palms on my belly as I shook my head. “That's the last thing he would ask me to do. He will never ask me to terminate my pregnancy. Never.” “But he did.” She walked forward, closing the distance between us. “That's a lie.” “A lie? Why do you think so?” She looked amused, cocking her head to the side. “I know he never loved me, but Dashiell won't order me to abort the pregnancy. If there's one thing he had always wanted, it was a child.” “But not with you,” she hissed. “What the hell are you talking about?” “I think this will prove some facts to you, Nova. Your dearest husband gave his consent.” She brought a piece of paper out from her bag and waved it in my face. “What?” I snatched the note from her and read through it, my eyes widening the mor
DASHIELL I checked the time on my wristwatch, worried. Nova should have been there an hour ago, but she was nowhere to be found. I tried her cellphone, but she switched it off. I even called the house to find out if she was still at home, but was told she left this morning at exactly 9 AM. So, where the fuck did she go to? I paced the floor, troubled as different thoughts went through my mind. I had always been a strong man and prided myself on thoughts of how calm and composed I was in times like this, but at the moment, I couldn't help the fear that gripped me.What if she had met with misfortune on the road and lost the baby? According to the men at home, she left the house alone, without letting any of them drive her. I didn't think it odd because she always took a taxi or had my driver take her to my office. However, it had been bloody hours since she left, and no one was yet to know where she went. “Dash,” Lilith called out as she strode into my office, smiling. She walked o
Five years later BELLA“Ma'am, these are the lists of new projects,” Clara, my secretary, said, passing her iPad to me. “You can check through them for any change you might need us to implement?” “Uhm. this is good.” I went through them, nodding with smiles at my designs. Who would have thought I would one day have an office of my own, and workers, willing to do my bidding? The icing on the cake? I got to do what I love the most. “What of this?” She pointed to the latest design I worked on before sending it to them. “Do you like the finished product? The production team manager seems to think it doesn't rhyme with your drawings.”“It does.” I peered at the jewellery that had finally come to life from the drawing I gave. “Send three of the products to me for the last designs. I need to go through them before I can carry out a positive judgment. Seeing them on screen isn't the same as off-screen.”“Would you like to visit the production site?” She asked, sounding excited. “We can go
DASHIELLStaring at the wedding picture I kept in my drawer, reminded me of Nova. I was searching for a file I kept on there when I saw it, something I had forgotten I brought to the office after I took it down because of Lilith — she hates seeing the picture on my desk. Sighing, I stared at a smiling Nova. It has been five freaking years since she left me. Five years since she disappeared from the country with no trace. At first, I was pissed with her, blaming her for every misfortune, but gradually, it turned to more. Her disappearance not only made me feel betrayed, but it left a hole in my heart. I couldn't tell what it was. Was it anger, or something else entirely? “Darling!” Lilith called out in that shrill voice of hers that always annoyed me.Startled, I placed the picture back in the drawer, before I looked up, forcing a smile so she wouldn't notice what I just did. “What's it?” I stood up from my chair and walked over to her, still smiling. My cheeks hurt from the exerti
"I still don't get you, Dash. Why do you always have something to say whenever I ask you about this? you are always promising me things each time, but you haven't fulfilled them!" She accused me. "Them? What promises did I make that I didn't fulfil?" I frowned, wondering what she was talking about. I couldn't recall ever making promises to her without fulfilling them. I always did."You promised to marry me, Dash. You gave me your words five years ago, but haven't fulfilled any!" "That's —" “Is it because of that bitch??? Are you still thinking about her even after she left with another man??? Is that why we haven't tied the knot? Do you think she would return after all these years?" “Nova has nothing to do with this.” I rubbed my left cheek. “There are things we need to consider. You know I'm still married to her by law. Unless we divorce, my family wouldn't see you as the main wife. You will always be a mistress to them." I tried to make her understand that I was only doing th
NOVA I didn't know I would meet him this fast. I expected the meeting to happen a week, or even a month after my return, but it happened this fast. It hadn't even been up to 48 hours since I arrived, and I had seen him. Seeing him in the audience gave me different emotions, ones that took a lot of time to conceal. If there was one thing I learned during my five years abroad, it was how to keep my face devoid of any thoughts. I had just concluded my speech and had gone into my private box when he appeared. The last man I wanted to see in the entire world. With Dashiell standing in front of me, it reminded me of the ugly incident that happened five years ago, when he sent Lilith to force me to get rid of my babies. “Nova,” he called out, taking hurried steps towards me.Dashiel hasn't changed that much. He still looked as handsome as he did, five years ago, reminding me of the time I was madly in love with him. Watching him, my heart soared at the sight of my ex-husband in a tailore
DASHIELLMy face clouded in anger at his words, as I took a step towards him, glaring at the idiot that thought to speak. "Who the hell are you to speak to me in that manner?" I demanded."Brion Marshall," he deadpanned, waiting for my face to dawn in recognition, and it did. Brion Marshall owns one of the most famous jewellery companies in the United States. Of course, I know him. He was the man I was to partner with on an upcoming project. "Ring a bell?" he demanded, taking more steps towards me. "I don't care who you are, or who the fuck you think you are, Mr Dashiell James, just get the fuck away from my girlfriend." "Your girlfriend?" I scoffed, regaining from the initial shock I got at the mention of his name. "She's my bloody wife, and we are married. I will advise you to remove your claws from what doesn't belong to you. Because she's mine! Touching her is courting death.” "Yours?" Nova stepped in, glaring as she took his hand in hers, further infuriating me. "I'm not a pr
When I came to, I was lying on a bed. The scent of disinfectant in the room made me realize where I was. I slowly sat up, grimacing at the pain in my arm. I had a bandage wrapped around my biceps, one that was stained with blood. The monitor next to me beeped as if it could sense my discomfort. Wincing, I leaned on the bed as I looked around the empty room. From the looks of it, Ben took me to the clinic I left Brion in. Heaving out a breath, I closed my eyes as images of the last time I was awake assaulted me. A knock on the door interrupted my thoughts. Snapping my eyes open, I looked towards it as it opened and Ben stepped in. “Thank God you are awake,” he said as he walked over to my bed and sat beside me, relief etched on his face. “Welcome back. You've been out for hours.”"Hours?" rubbed my temples, trying to clear the fog. “What of Gabriella?”“Dead. You did a pretty good number on her. The police have agreed to rule it out as self-defence. As she was an offender, it's not
“Where is Dashiell?” I asked after a few seconds, still wondering why she hadn't attacked me. I figured all it would take was a little talk before we get down to business. “Dashiell?” She made a face at that before a knowing smirk took over. Getting up, she glanced towards the stairs, which seemed like it had seen better days. The stairs didn't look like they would last for another year before caving in. Just like the rest of the house, it was dying — most times, I always believed houses were entities. She snapped her fingers and three men appeared from a door behind where she stood, their chest bare, showing off muscles that must have taken years to build. My heart skipped as I gripped the pistol in my hoodie tighter. I knew it was about time for the fight. But I doubt I could take the men on. Gabriella alone? I could. “Do you assume the gun you hid in your hoodie will help you, darling?” She smiled, her eyes crinkling at the sides. "How?" I was dumbstruck by the question. “How
It looked just like the place someone as shady as Zoey would be. As I approached, I noticed the overgrown yard and weeds sprouting through cracks in the pavement. Nature had reclaimed the property, wrapping vines around the porch pillars. I slowed my pace, my senses on high alert. Something felt off. Though Ben's hidden presence reassured me, my heart continued to thud like a bass drum in my chest. I took a deep breath and stepped onto the porch, the wooden boards groaning beneath my feet. The door creaked as I pushed it open, and I called out, “I'm here.” My voice echoed through the empty corridor. At first, nothing happened, until I heard a rather familiar voice asking me to come forward. I looked back at the place Ben was likely hiding in before I fully stepped in and closed the falling door. I shivered as I walked forward, guided by the dim lighting in the hallway before I arrived in the sitting room. A figure sat perched on one of the sofas, the minute I walked in. “Hell
I got dressed for the operation. We didn't return to the hospital because I didn't think it was necessary. Brion would undoubtedly try to talk me out of my plans, which was why I didn't attempt a return there, not until we had gotten everything sorted. Today, I vowed, would be the day I bring Dashiell back home. He had stayed too long with Zoey. It was time for him to return, to his home, to me and the kids.“Ready?” Ben turned to me, lifting a brow, when I stepped out of the motel I checked into to change out of my clothes. I had a bulletproof vest under a hoodie. To cover my guns, I stuffed them into the pockets of my hoodie, waiting until I got an excellent location to conceal them. “Ready,” I confirmed, adjusting my hoodie to ensure the bulletproof vest wasn't visible. “Well, as ready as I can, for a dangerous mission,” I added with a smile. Though I was feeling as nervous as hell, and it felt like my heart was about to leap from my chest, I acted like I was okay. Yeah, perfectly
Suddenly, I was moving, being pulled towards a police car. Officer Maxwell's hands were still on my shoulders, guiding me into the back seat.As we sped away from the scene, I felt like my world was crashing down around me. My thoughts were all over the place. The drive to the hospital seemed like an eternity. It felt as if someone trapped me in a nightmare, one I was unable to wake up from.As we arrived at the hospital, I saw chaos. Police cars and ambulances were everywhere. People were running, shouting.I felt like I was going to throw up.After parking the car in the only space he could find, Officer Maxwell guided me out of the car. I stumbled, my legs weak. I wasn't physically weak, more like my emotions were getting the better of me. Thankfully, Brion was outside. However, my eyes were drawn to the little ones with him. The tears I didn't know I was holding back rolled down my eyes as I rushed towards them, feeling suddenly energetic. I knelt in front of my kids, hugging th
I complied, lying flat on the ground as the officers approached. They quickly subdued the third man, who was still trying to escape, and took the others away. I laid on the ground, thinking of a way out, until I looked up and saw Officer Maxwell walking over to me with a frown on his face. “Is that you, Nova?” He demanded, closing the distance between us. At his approach, the police officers standing around me made way for him, each watching him intently. He reached down and helped me up from the ground, passing a handkerchief to me so I could wipe the dirt. Smiling, I took it from him and started cleaning the dirt on my body. From hiding behind the bush to lying flat on the ground, I looked like a mess, like I barely survived. “Do you know how dangerous your moves were, Nova? You could have gotten yourself hit?!” He yelled at my face the moment I finished cleaning up. “Why are you so damned reckless??!”“I didn't get killed, did I?” I lifted my shoulders in a shrug, acting like I
“Are you really going there alone?” Brion lifted a brow, watching me get dressed for the assignment. Surely you're joking, right? Are you messing with me? I should have known that was what you were doing.”"Not in the slightest. I am heading out solo. I still have my gun with me, remember? If it turns out to be a trap, I will shoot those damned bastards right in their eyes. He must have found the promise in my gaze amusing, as he chuckled and covered his mouth with his right hand. “Though what you said right there is funny, we can't ignore the enormous elephant in the room. That is far too massive for that. You, Nova, aren't going anywhere without informing the police. I don't want to lose you, and I know the kids don't. We still need you, and —”“You are making this sound dramatic.” I rolled my eyes at him as I checked my reflection in the mirror. I didn't dress up. I just changed my style. Instead of the beautiful flowery gown I wore this morning, it was now a black shirt and blac
My eyes were puffy when I woke up the next morning after a restless night of tossing around in bed. I only slept for an hour, but that was enough for me. I had my bath and got dressed before I left for my kids' room. They were awake already, so I bathed them and helped them brush their teeth before I bought breakfast. After eating, Brion returned to his room to bathe and get dressed for the day, before he met me outside the children's room. I filled him up on everything, letting him know my plans. It was while we were discussing the next step to take that a nurse informed us Lilith had woken up. Brion would have gone with me, but I asked him to stay with the kids as I rushed over to her room. I opened the door and stormed in, resisting the urge to slam the door. Lilith was sitting up on the bed when I arrived. The moment she saw me, her face turned as white as a sheet. “Nova?”“Having sight issues, are you now?” I walked over to the bed, my gaze going on the handcuffs holding her.
We walked up the stairs, our gazes sharp and alert. We didn't want any of the occupants in the abandoned building to know our steps. Ben took the lead, leaving me in the rear. I was scared, thinking of someone jumping from the dark to dig their claws into my chest. The image I got was vivid. It didn't help that I recalled horror movies I watched years ago. The people at the back are mostly the ones who die first. Ben's steps were silent as he climbed, and I tried to keep the same pace with him despite the shivering of my body. I clutched tightly to the gun, pointing it in all directions. The silence in the house was deafening. For a moment, I thought we were frozen in time, walking the stairs of a haunted house. The cobwebs in every corner were the worst. I would have screamed when I caught one with my gun had it not been for the mission. I swallowed back the scream, panting heavily while seeking to remain calm. Did I tell you it was an impossible feat? Of course, it was. I'd seen
