LACHLAN’S POV

As I glanced at the Patek Philippe Nina that got me on my birthday last year, I knew my patience was wearing thin. This was the umpteenth time that I was checking the time. If anyone took the hint, they would know I wanted to leave. Badly.

We were going over the quarterly sales forecast update, and each time a word leaves Jeremy's lips, I die. If there was an award to be given to the most boring business meeting, it would be the quarterly sales forecast because why would an entire team of over a hundred professionals loop me in their boring discussion about sales pipeline management and data? I'm the CEO. I should be doing nothing at all!

“Now, we'll move onto the final agenda of the meeting.” Jeremy flipped his clipboard over.

I let out a deep sigh. "Finally."

I looked around the conference room. Everyone was trying so hard not to sleep; their eyes drooped and their faces grew fatigued. I suddenly felt pity for them and wanted to cancel the meeting, but if we don't go o

LACHLAN'S POVI looked between Amelia and Eric, not knowing what to say or do. Eric slowly turned to me and offered a small smile. "Oh, hello there, Lachlan.”There was a gash on his forehead and little bruises here and there. His left leg was even wrapped in a bandage. He looked like someone who had an accident. Amelia, who was sitting right beside him, rose to her feet. “Lachlan, what are you doing here?” Now, that question undid the frozen spell. “Same goes. What exactly are you doing here?” Lilian cut in. “Sir, we heard Sir Truman was in the hospital and...”“I don't pay you to put your nose in my business, so shut up!” I snapped. This infuriated Amelia. “What is wrong with you? Why are you yelling at her?”I pinched the skin between my brows. “Do you even know how scared I was when I heard you were in the hospital?” Her face pinched in puzzlement. “What? Hospital?”“You're in a goddamn hospital, are you not?” I raised my voice.“Don't you dare raise your voice at me?!” Ameli

CASSIE'S POVNina’s smile turned sour, and she crossed her arm over her chest. "You... what's the likes of you doing here?” Normally, I'd expect her to kiss and hug me like we used to, but now we just stared daggers at each other. Things haven't been the same since she stumbled upon me and Chris.I noticed Lachlan watching us with narrowed eyes as though calculating my very next move. The old Cassandra would've retorted sharply without delay, but if I had to prove that I've changed, I’d have to act like it. So instead of yelling back at Nina, I bowed my head and apologised.“I'm sorry if my presence upsets you." Then I lifted my head. “If there's nothing else, I'd best be on my way.”The room was left stunned. I could tell because they stared with wide eyes. Now, I have their attention. Bloody fools.I picked up my purse, ready to leave, but Lach’s mom stopped me. “Come on, Cassie. Don't do that. Don't leave because of us.” She gave me a warm smile.Ah, this one has always been my

AMELIA'S POV I haven't had a nightmare in a while, but last night, I had one. I knew I had a nightmare because I woke up screaming. The odd thing about it was that I did not remember what it was about. I remember Lachlan coddling me back to sleep after that and sleeping next to me. But as soon as I wake up, he's gone. This time he left a white rose and a note: “No matter what happens, I'll never stop giving you these flowers, even if my heart stops beating. Love, your stupid husband.” Normally, I would gush over this note and flower. Strangely, I don't feel anything of the sort. My hand flew to my chest as I contemplated what was happening to me. I was suddenly interrupted by the light ping of my phone. I reached for the bedside table and grabbed it. The screen powered on, and I found a message from the notification bar. I opened it and realised it was a message from Eric. As I read it, my eyes filled. “Hey, sunshine. I call you that because your sun

AMELIA'S POV In Lachlan's eyes, I probably come off as the villain. It was undeniable. I could see it. The hate, the disgust, how he was lost for words for how I've changed. I, too, am shocked at myself. Why am I behaving the way I am? Ah, it must be these pregnancy hormones. The chauffeur pulled up at the hospital. I shifted towards the door, wondering if this was the right decision at all. But when the chauffeur held the door open and extended his hand to help me out, I knew there was no going back. My sandals hit the soft pavement, and I clutched my purse tightly. The chauffeur took a step back and stared at me as though waiting for further instructions. His glassy blue eyes held no emotion, but his hands trembled as though there was something he wanted to say. Mark or Michael, was it? I couldn't remember his name. The company sends us different drivers every week. I could barely keep up with all their names. I sensed his worry and pulled up a bright smile. “I'm going t

LACHLAN'S POVAmelia's birthday gift was nestled in the breast pocket of my velvet blazer. I decided to give it to her when she returned from the hospital. She and Eric and I are having a good time huh. A bitter laugh escaped my lips and I leaned back in the back of the SUV. Why was she doing this to me? She knows I am irrevocably in love with her and I cannot think when she's distant. If this keeps up, I might need to implant a pacemaker because she was shattering my heart. I leaned forward and the tiny box moved. It was a reminder that Amelia and I were falling apart. Again. How could I fix this?My eyes met Mark's in the rearview mirror and he averted his gaze.I sat up with a heavy sigh. “It’s too late to play dumb. Spill it.”“There's nothing to spill, sir.” Mark chuckled nervously. “Nothing to spill huh? That's why you're sweating bullets and avoiding eye contact.” I replied. This time he looked at me. Gotcha.“I'm not hiding anything, sir.” Mark made a right, easing the car

LACHLAN'S POVThere was a brief knock on the door, and I told whoever it was to enter. “I apologise for intruding.” The female voice said, and I jolted from my seat. Cassie. The mere sight of her infuriated me. “What part of my ‘Back off'? I'm married!’ Did you not understand?”“I'm sorry.” She said in a trembling voice and turned to leave.A familiar scent hits my nose, and I froze. “Wait.”I didn't know if she was still there because she hadn't come into the office. She remained at the door. The scent of spiced chicken and flour tortillas. It couldn't be what I'm thinking about. I held the door ajar and found her standing in the threshold nestling a grilled pineapple bowl in kitchen gloves. I stepped back for her to enter. “One in.”“Thank you.” She muttered. When she entered, she set down the bowl on a napkin on the centre table. “Why did you make me chicken fajitas?” I crossed my arms over my chest. She twiddles her fingers. I could see the Band-Aids latched on each finger.

ERIC'S POV Amelia's smile lights up the room like a giant beam and I find myself falling for her all over again. We were playing Kahoot. Kahoot is basically a game-based learning platform where players answer questions and earn points. In simpler terms, it's a game where you become a temporary genius, a keyboard warrior and a ruthless competitor will shield learning stuff and Amelia was good at it. “Ah, dang it!” I slapped my forehead. Amelia had won for the fifth time. She whooped loudly. “A five time winning streak is no easy feat. Someone should crown me the queen.” I snorted. “You're lucky you won. I went easy on you.” “Aw. He's sad because he lost.” She pinched my cheek. Before I could take her hand in mine, she moved it away. Oh, I was so close. “I didn't lose. The questions didn't make any sense.” I pushed a button by my side and it lifted the reclining bed. Amelia burst into laughter, then moved he to pay for my hair. “Don’t worry. Losing at Kahoot is no

AMELIA'S POVI felt like I achieved something today. Staying in the hospital and enduring the sterile smell of bleach and bandages, talking to Eric and feeding him hospital food, playing the game of Kahoot and having fun… Today was the best birthday I've ever had. While in the taxi, My fingers brushed the emerald necklace around my neck and I smiled. It was Mom's and now, mine. I don't know how Eric found it but I love him for giving it to me. Loved… that's such a strong word. I felt a buzz in my purse and realised my phone was ringing. I missed the call before I could answer. When I decided to check the caller my eyes widened in my head. I got 35 missed calls from Lachlan. Oh my God. “Um… driver , can you go a bit faster?” I told the middle aged man driving the Uber.“I'm sorry, ma'am, but I can't risk it. You're pregnant after all. Wouldn't want anything that'll harm the baby.” he looked at the rearview mirror as he replied to me.Ugh! I gave up. Lachlan would have to wait for me

Lachlan's POVI couldn't handle Amelia rejecting me again. The moment I went home, I went straight to my bedroom and began to pack my bags. Maybe, space was what she needed from me. I was done packing and kept my box at the side. In the morning, I would leave for Japan. I had already informed my pilot. The jet was ready and so was everyone. After that, I sat in the bar in the living room, drinking some water. I didn't have the stomach for any more alcohol. I finished and kept down the glass. Almost immediately, I heard the sound of a driving vehicle. I wasn't expecting any guests and the guards knew better than to let anyone into the compound without informing me. I rose to my feet and waited. Just who was here?A soft knock in the door tore through the air and I froze. Was it mom? Nina? Dad?I made a beeline for the door and held it open. Standing before me was the person I expected to show up at my doorstep — Amelia. “Amelia, what are you—”Without a word, she pressed her lips

Amelia's POVI scrolled through my phone, wondering if I should call Lachlan.A part of me wanted to, while the other half told me it was a terrible idea.I sat up on the couch and chewed on my lip. It was late, and here I was, thinking about someone who was probably not thinking about me. I had rejected him most horribly. I'm pretty sure he hates me, and I'm pretty sure he's out drinking and laughing and living while I sit here, questioning every decision I have ever made.I searched for Lachlan in my message app, and I stared at the screen. “Do I apologize for what I did, or should I do it in person?”My finger hovered over the keyboard, and I typed. “I'm sorry.”Then I went to the emoji icon, looking for a sad emoji. I settled for the faceless emoji, but instead of sending it, I sent a kiss emoji.Just like that, I sent it. “No, no, no, no!”Before I could delete it, he had already read it. My phone dropped to my lap and I nearly screamed.Lachlan's POVI arrived with a dry look

Lachlan's POVThe next day, I decided to pretend nothing unusual happened in New York. But every time an employee asked how my vacation was, my mind drifted back to Amelia's rejection, and when that happened, I thought about her.I couldn't focus during meetings. I zoned out on more than one occasion, imagining endless possibilities of Amelia accepting me. One time I imagined I had never treated Amelia horribly in the past and that we were very happy. But rewinding time was impossible.“Sir… Sir!” Clara said it aloud.I blinked twice and looked at her and the sea of confused faces in the conference room.Shit. I zoned out. It was clear from the looks on their faces that they were worried about me. One more second in this room and they'll drown me in questions.I cleared my throat and reached for my phone on the table. The time was a few minutes past 4.“The meeting is adjourned to next Friday.” I pushed back my seat and walked out of the room. I took the elevator to the parking lot

Lachlan's POVThe work came crashing down around me. The kiss… The “Yes”... The happily ever after… Everything was a fantasy… A cruel trick the mind played on me.She turned to leave, but I couldn't call out to her or beg her to stay. I couldn't even move or speak. The ring was still clutched in my hand, and my heart was bleeding deep inside.I looked behind me as she walked away, not even stopping to even stare at me. I wanted to scream for her to stay with me, but she didn't.I rose to my feet and pocketed the ring, feeling absolutely dejected and somewhat dead on the inside.I followed the path she took, walking slowly behind her. “Amelia…”She didn't answer.“Amelia, please…” I whispered again, but she didn't stop.I couldn't let her go home like this. I ran up to catch up with her and caught her wrist. “Amelia!” I believe I raised my voice because almost everyone was staring at us.She passed, but she didn't look at me, but I could feel her hand tremble in mine.God, what the h

Lachlan's POVI ordered room service, and we ate breakfast in silence. As we ate, I couldn't stop myself from staring at Amelia. She looked twice as beautiful as she was before. She finally broke the silence. “Umm… You're looking the wrong way, Lachlan. The food is on the plate.”“Well, that's not the food I see.” I flashed her a grin, and her cheeks turned red. She gave a nervous laugh. “Wow. So funny.”When I saw that she was embarrassed to leave, I pushed back my chair. “Maybe we could go home today!” Amelia announced aloud, forcing me to resume my seat.“You want to go home?” I asked, sitting down. “Yeah…” She looked everywhere except my face. “We… we could just go home, you know…Uh… unwind… Forget about everything for a while.” “My face is up here, darling.” I told her.Amelia lifted her eyes to meet mine, and I smiled. “I thought of that too.”“You did?” She asked in surprise, and now I had the irresistible urge to kiss her.“Y—yeah.” I fisted my left hand, restraining mysel

Amelia's POVThe smell of food interrupted the dream I was having, and I stirred awake.I rubbed my eyes and sat up only to see Lachlan walking towards the bed with a tray of food. My heart skipped a beat. “Lachlan?”“Morning, beautiful.” He set down the tray next to me and plopped down on the bed next to me. I noticed a white flower and note ona the tray. The family sight made my heart flutter. Ife just like before. He still hasn't forgotten. “You did all this for me?”“Yeah. Do you like it?” Lachlan asked, tucking a stray hair behind my ears.“Like it?” It had been so long since he'd done something like this. I was surprised and happy all at once. I smiled and blushed. “I love it.”I picked up the note and read it. Warmth rushed through me, and my cheeks were flushed with heat. I had missed this too, a,nd I'm sure he had too.I, had even forgotten last night's little “argument.”“Thank you, Lachlan.” I beamed him a smile, and he palmed the back of his neck. His cheeks were red, a

Lachlan's POVMy mind keeps drifting to when Amelia hid the bag from me. Clearly, there was someone else. Someone else she clearly didn't tell me about. Well, why would she? She's an adult and has every right to do whatever she wants. I heaved another sigh and reached for the 5th glass of tequila shots. These shots soothe me more than any therapist I've ever been to.As I brought the alcohol to my lips, I heard a familiar voice behind me.“Ah, I see you escaped too.” said the voice.I looked around and found him—Duke. What was she doing here?He walked up to me and gave me a nod. “I didn't know you drank alone.”I refocused my gaze on the tequila shot, suddenly feeling too ashamed to drink, so I used it in my hand instead.Duke plopped on a stool beside me. “Well, I want to let you know that you have my gratitude.”I looked at him, puzzled. “Gratitude?”“Well, yeah.” Duke tossed a dollar bill on the counter, and the barman passed him a bottle of wine and a champagne glass. I guess he

Amelia's POVI was about to down my fourth glass of wine before Lachlan took it from me.“We don't want you drunk before dinner, do we?” He whispered gently in my ear, and I giggled. My head felt heavy, and the room was spinning. “Oh.”I felt Lachlan's arm around my waist, and he pulled me close to him.“Careful or you'll miss your step.” Lachlan whispered behind my ears, and I felt my toes squirm in my heels.“Oh.”“The champagne here is amazing.” I heard the Duke say this to his wife. Then Lachlan let go of me. I wanted his hand around me again. Before I could call for him, Eloise took my hand. “Amelia, you have a secret, don't you?”I sobered up immediately when I heard that. “S—secret?”Then I turned to Lachlan. Did he tell them that we were divorced?“Yes,” Eloise smiled. “You just tell me. What's your secret… to stay so young?”“What?” I was stunned.“Yeah.” Then she gave my arm to Lachlan. “Don't you feel how smooth it is?”“It is,” Lachlan smiled. “She takes care of herself.”

Amelia's POVWhen Lachlan left the house, I felt a bit disappointed. I had wanted him to stay. “Are you okay, Amelia?” I felt Rebecca’s hand on my arm, and I flinched.“Yes, of course.” I shot her a smile.“No, are you hearing the baby? He's crying.” She said with alarm.“What?” I yelled. That was when I heard it—a faint cry coming from upstairs. “Oh shit,” I bolted upstairs. “Thank you, Rebecca.”I raced upstairs to the nursery, where I found Bailey cradling the baby in her arms. “Where have you been?” She mouthed to me. “Downstairs.” I mouthed back. “My mind took a little detour.”She rolled her eyes and shooed me away from the room.I walked downstairs and slumped on the couch.“Are you okay?” Rebecca looked up from her phone. “No.” I said it with all honesty.“What's wrong?” She asked, palming circles on my back. “The baby?... Stress?... Both?”I heaved a sigh. “I wish.”“Then what is it?” she asked. Then she paused before she continued. “Is it Lachlan?”I felt my heart skip
