Hailey wiped her hands with a towel and flicked away the sweats on her forehead. Her eyes roamed over her masterpiece on the huge table inside the kitchen. Plates of various cuisines were spread on the enormous table. And they were all cooked by her.
She hadn't worked this hard for a long time. But this was a special occasion. Kendrick would return tonight. It had been three months since she saw him last. And three months since her marriage to him. When he had walked out on her on their wedding night, nothing could amount to the joy she felt. A month before that, she never knew she would end up being his wife. It was the most tragic thing that ever happened to her. Just one mistake, from a night of painful pleasure, and the next thing she knew was being forced into an arranged marriage. But all would end tonight."Hailey, are you done?" Chloe entered the kitchen. Her eyes surveyed the table and having confirmed for herself, she locked the door and walked forward. "Here, make sure you drop it in each dish," she said and brought out a tiny bottle from her bag.Hailey's hand trembled as she took the bottle from her sister and she couldn't help her hand that wandered to the little bump in her stomach. "Don't worry," Chloe continued in a low voice. "This drug is not fatal, I have confirmed it. It will only make him feel some discomfort and sick for a few days." "I know." Hailey forced a smile. And they had already been planning this for a long time. That way It would be easier to get him to divorce her. Who would like to live with a woman that tried to poison him? But still, she couldn't dismiss the nervousness that crept up in her mind. "And you shall finally get to be with Rob," Chloe added with a sweet smile.Hailey's grip tightened on the bottle at the mention of his name. Rob, her childhood love and her boyfriend. He was the only reason why she was doing all this. He still loved her and eagerly waiting for her to return to him. He had even said that he'd accept the baby, as long as she came back to him. With hands trembling, she uncapped the bottle. After making sure each dish had a drop of the transparent liquid she breathed out a sigh. "Good," her sister whispered with a satisfied grin. "Only a few hours left and you shall become free again." Hailey took off her apron and brushed past Chloe. She didn't need to stay there any longer, otherwise, she might change her mind. As she strode up the stairs, she chanted many words inside her head to assure herself that she wasn't doing anything wrong. Besides, the poison was not going to kill him. Kendrick had left a scar in her life, she was never going to forget. And the fact that he hadn't shown any interest in her after that night. It was only fair. If not for her grandfather finding out and investigating the matter, they would have long forgotten each other as her sister had convinced her to take out the baby. When she got inside her room on the left-wing of the stairs, she paced for some minutes before going inside the bathroom. After taking her bath, she dressed in one of her finest clothes. It was going to be their first time eating together, although she wasn't planning to eat anything tonight. Her long black hair rested on her right shoulder. She dabbed some powder onto her face, and applied to her lips, a rosy lipstick. Then she picked up a perfume.A knocking sound came from the door and a maid stepped in. "Madam, Master has arrived. He is waiting for you downstairs."Hailey's hand paused mid-air before she dropped the perfume. "Th–The foods," she said past trembling lips. "Ma'am Chloe and the other servants are already setting the table.""O–Okay, you may leave." Hailey nodded and the maid bowed and walked out. She turned back to the mirror then her hand wandered to the bump in her stomach. She took in a deep breath and patted her chest, then slipped in her shoes and left the room. On her way downstairs, she took her time to curb any anxiety building up in her stomach. She made her way to the dining area and could feel an intense gaze on her. The servants came inside, from the large door, with huge boxes in their hands, and headed upstairs. Hailey did not need to guess the contents of the boxes, they were all gifts for her. However, she didn't need any of his gifts. The tons he had sent her while on the trip had piled up in her closet untouched. If not for her sister helping her do away with them, she was sure half of her room would be occupied by now. Every luxury in the world could in no way amount to true love, and she firmly stood by that notion. His gaze did not leave her even when she sat on a chair, farther away from him. Kendrick sat at the head chair and most of the food was spread in front of him. His face held no expression. His eyes were just glued to her, as if in a trance. Hailey looked at anything else on the table but him as she fiddled with her hands. She had for so long held her anger and thought she would explode at the sight of him. But none of those emotions came back tonight. They were replaced by something else. No, she didn't need to feel remorseful for someone as heartless as him. He deserved all that was coming to him.Silent hung in the air and none of them spoke a word. Chloe emerged from the kitchen with a plate of dessert in her hands. She settled it carefully in front of Kendrick and sat on a chair to his right."Brother-in-law, Hailey has spent several hours in the kitchen preparing these foods, she wouldn't even allow me to help her. I hope you enjoy it," Chloe said in a timid voice. "Really?" His deep voice made Hailey look up and she found his gaze still on her. His eyes softened and she could even notice a hint of smile on his face."Yes." Chloe nodded. "Hailey is so good at cooking, her skill surpasses everyone else's in the family.""Is that true?" He looked at the plates of food, before giving her his full attention, probably demanding an answer from her.Hailey frowned and glanced away. Of course, she wasn't the only one that could cook in the family. There was no need for her sister to help her enter into his good books."Oh, sister caught a cold last week and has been dealing with a sore throat since then. She can't speak properly." Chloe butted in then stood up. She served him the food and said, "The food will turn cold, Brother-in-law. Hailey has put a lot of effort into it."
When the doctor left, the butler made a call, then stood up. Shortly after, one of the guards who had been standing outside the door came inside. He exchanged glances with the butler, before standing at the edge of the bed. The butler let out a sigh and walked out, after glancing at her. Hailey returned her attention to the bed. She wanted to hold his hand again but the guard stopped her. "Sorry, Ma'am. You can't touch Master," he said flatly. Hailey withdrew her hands with a sigh. She kept her eyes glued to the floor and her head will jerk up anytime she sensed him move under the sheet. Several minutes passed by and she was dozing off when the door opened again and the butler walked in, now dressed in a new set of clothes and holding a large bag. He went to the couch and the bodyguard helped him take out boxes of food from the bag. Then he returned with two boxes on a tray and gave her. "I heard from the servants that you didn't eat since last night," said the butler. It was
Hailey stepped forward and tried to hold him. If her grandfather got wind of it, she would be done for."Can you defend yourself that you didn't do it?" Her father demanded and she kept quiet as tears streamed down her face."No. We can't keep you here. You can't stay in this house." The man shook his head rapidly. As she didn't deny, he was now a hundred percent certain. "This is a great crime, and the lawyers might arrive anytime. Leave here immediately."Her stepmother nodded and scoffed. "You are truly heartless, Hailey. You brewed this trouble for yourself and you will face it alone.""N– No, father, please." Hailey shook her head rapidly. How did it come to this? She stepped forward again to hold her father, but was sent down with a hard slap. Her stepmother smirked and also raised her hand to hit her when the door opened and Chloe came running out. "Father, Mother, please don't hit sister, you might hurt her," she pleaded while trying to shield Hailey. "Get away from her, C
His gaze wandered to her stomach and she sighed. Rob still blamed himself for taking her to the bar that night. Who knew she would have wandered off while drunk, and ended up in another man's arms. "I took some medications, I'll be fine." She had gone down to the pharmacy on the lowest floor of the hotel and got herself some drugs. She couldn't afford to go to the hospital as someone familiar might spot her. She would only be safe at this moment with her family. Unfortunately, she hadn't gotten any good news from Chloe yet. Her parents were still mad at her. "Okay, if you say so." Rob stroked her hair and smiled. "Have you gotten the divorce papers?" He asked after some time. Hailey bit her lips and slowly shook her head. If Kendrick got better, he would send her the divorce papers without her even asking. She was sure of that. "I'll get it in a few days," she replied softly. "Until then..." She took his hand and continued."We can't see each other, Rob. I don't want to cause you
Her breathing quickened and she gripped the door for support. He looked so handsome in his black tuxedo, his narrowed eyes fixing her in a heated gaze. Was she hallucinating? There wasn't any sign of the weak guy she left lying on the hospital bed. Every of his being was radiating a formidable aura. And his expression was dark as the night. With both hands in his pants pockets, he stepped forward and Hailey took a step back, her heart drumming heavily against her chest. "Nice house you've got here," he murmured, as his eyes left her and he surveyed the room "W–What are you doing here?" Hailey took another step back, trying to mask her fear. If he had recovered from the poison, wouldn't his next step be to send her the divorce papers through his lawyers? Unless if he was here to seek revenge. 'Oh no.' She gulped. "I could ask you the same question." Kendrick reached forward and caressed her cheek gently with his hand. It sent shivers up her spine and she instinctively move her
Kendrick chuckled and continued. "Our baby is going to look just like you." His finger traced over the tiny outline and his expression softened. "Your eyes, my nose. Our skin color—""No!" Hailey cut him off. Her chest heaving up and down. She didn't want her baby to inherit any of his traits. It would only remind her of him. "That won't happen.""Oh, it will," Kendrick smirked again. "My little one is going to have a lot of our characteristics. And we're going to raise him well, together." Hailey felt like her heart was about to rip through her ribcage. She was so afraid Kendrick was right. How she wished this to be a nightmare. "Please, K–Kendrick," she stuttered and sniffled. "We don't belong together.""Ah, but we do.""No, we don't!" Hailey exclaimed desperately. "I don't care whether or not this child belongs to you! I was forced into marrying you!" "But I do," He whispered, and cupped her cheeks in his palm. "And I don't give a damn about anything else other than this child.
Hailey brought out her phone and started playing with it. She saw a missed call from Rob and she let out a sigh. "I'll break down this door if you don't open it!" Kendrick thundered. Hailey rolled her eyes and scoffed again. 'Who cares if he breaks down the house? It's his own property.'She turned back to her phone and sighed again. What was she going to tell Rob? He must have gone to the hotel. Turning off her phone, she tossed it on the bedside table and sniffed. 'Kendrick that devil.' She chewed on her bottom lip. Was he a masochist or what? How could he still think of wanting her even after what she did? If he liked babies so much, why wouldn't he just go out there and make one with any woman and leave her alone? He had told her that she had been the one that forced herself on him that night, was he even telling the truth? The knocks finally stopped and relief washed over her. But sleep was very far from Hailey's eyes. Her stomach kept grumbling and she tossed and turned on
Besides, Kendrick must have gone to work. She didn't want to see his face. When she left her room and got down the stairs, the servants avoided her like plague. Each kept a distance from her, giving her those weird looks. And the one that served her food as she arrived at the dining table, scuttled away immediately she was done. Hailey sighed and ate her food silently. What did she care whatever they thought of her? They might as well gang up and confront her. Still eating her food, she lifted her head to see the Butler walking in her direction. "Good morning, Madam. I hope you had a splendid night," he stood by her side and said, a smile creasing his slightly wrinkled face. Hailey blinked before she swallowed the food in her mouth. "Y–Yes... I slept well." She nodded hesitantly. Wasn't he the one that kept helping Kendrick bang on her door last night? And if the servants hated her, the Butler was like her number one enemy. What was he up to? "Good!" The Butler beamed. "Master w
Sharelene stood in a corner, watching everything unfold. The family was in a frenzy. She could only see fear in their eyes and hear the fright in their voices.As the staff wheeled Hailey out of the emergency room, a deafening silence fell upon the hallway. And Ken...He hadn't been himself since they came here. He hadn't been himself since a few days back when he learned Hailey was kidnapped. Neither would he speak to anyone, nor listen to those that tried to talk reason into him and advise him to take it rationally. Since a few days back, he was the complete opposite of the man she had met many years ago and had a second chance of getting close to again. The man that would always keep calm no matter the circumstances...He was nowhere to be found. Ken was completely different from that man she knew. In her mind, she'd almost gotten what she wanted... Or more specifically, what her family wanted. But now, staring down at the ring on her finger, it was as if the engagement neve
```````And every day, Kendrick lived in guilt. For the next several months, every minute of his life was consumed by guilt. It took him weeks to gain her mother's favor, and even months to regain her grandfather's. He would come back every day, hoping that her eyes would at least flutter. Her bump kept increasing at an alarming rate. His every day was filled with fear and trepidation. And one day, her eyes did flutter. He was supposed to feel joy, but not at a chance that more trouble loomed ahead. Her pregnancy was due and not a week after that, the babies arrived. His real fear resurfaced at that moment. The fear that they would never be able to hold their bundles of joy together. The fear that he would never get the chance to tell her that he loved her. However, she proved the doctors wrong, chasing away his fears. Now, staring down at the babies, her utmost gifts to him, Kendrick had never felt so much contented in his life. He'd never been able to wipe off his smile sin
***Kendrick paced in front of the Emergency Room. His heart was in his stomach and his hand never left his hair. It was as if she'd been inside there for hours now despite being wheeled in just now.No amount of self-reassurance could calm him. No one attempted to offer him reassuring words even. They've all been in the same dilemma.Her mother wouldn't stop crying and he couldn't find the heart to offer her those words he'd yearned so much to hear. Hadn't it all been his fault? Hailey was pregnant. How was that possible? When they arrived here, it was the first thing the nurses said after taking her vitals. But Kendrick still found it hard to digest.And the fact that the child would definitely turn out to be his only made him more confused. It made him angrier with himself. "Ken, what is going on here?" Rushed footsteps sounded in the hallway and he glanced sideways to find his parents as well as Sharelene. "What are you doing in this place? Is someone wounded?" Asked his f
~~~'Hailey.'Kendrick's hands trembled and his grip on the gun threatened to loosen. Staring up at the balcony where she was being held captive, he fought not to let the rage take over. The rage that became multifold the moment he sighted them dragging her here. Her body was limped. She looked worse than how she'd looked in the video. And an almost similar-looking lady, whose face was cascaded with tears, was being held at gunpoint beside her. Was that her mother? "Don't worry, Mr. Reid." Standing with them were the three shareholders. "She isn't dead yet. But she'll soon be, if you don't follow our commands."Mr. Weimar and the rest. Kendrick's assumption hadn't been wrong. They had a hand in this. "Already, you've broken one of our rules," scoffed one of them. "We thought we told you to come alone. Coming here with your friend is like seeking more trouble. Will Mr. Carter be competent enough to fend for himself?""Shit! Buddy, these stupid old fools are underestimating me," De
***"Hailey, listen to me!" Rob grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to look up. "This is important, you have to take it."Nothing was more important to Hailey right now than getting away from him. Not only did she fear these drugs he had brought her, but she also feared the way his demeanor had changed ever since he returned with them.Of course, even if Rob was really trying to save her, there was no way she was going to cooperate with him.Yesterday, he'd secretly taken her blood, waking her up. And he returned this morning, looking agitated and somehow angry at her. "Hailey!" Rob's hold became tighter. "You must take these drugs immediately. I can't get you out here if you don't. Please, Hailey." He softened his voice. "Just take the damned drugs, you'll feel better. We both will feel better.""What exactly is wrong with you?" Her mother's voice faded in the background. "Leave her alone, she doesn't want to take them. Please I'm begging you, don't torment her any further."While he
Maniac.Hailey lifted her hand weakly to send a slap across his face, but her hand went limp and fell mid-way."M–Murderer." She pushed his chest. "Just go, leave me alone.""Hailey." Footsteps approached the room and Rob said frantically, "Please hold on." He touched her forehead. "You're sick. I'll get someone to treat you. I'll get you out, I promise."Then he sprang to his feet and left, closing the door behind him. Hailey was left wondering how such lunatics could be left wandering among normal people. She sniffed and waddled back into her mother's embrace. How blind had she been to associate with these kinds of people in the past?And how could she put a stop to these endless noises and intense headaches? She didn't want to remember? She didn't want to recall whatever they had shared in the past. ***'Ken, you have to save me. These strange men have captured me and they won't release me until you come. ...The hours dragged on, and from the tiny cracks in the wall, it seemed night had come. Still in her mother's embrace, Hailey shut her eyes to keep up with that pain.Both hands were wrapped around her stomach and she'd shiver now and then. As much as she'd like sleep to overtake her, it didn't. The exhaustion weighing her down didn't let her achieve that. The exhaustion caused by the aches all over her body. Her head pounded constantly, the voices also became louder each time she was left to her thoughts. Those hallucinations were neverending, and very soon she was afraid that they'd burst out, damaging more parts of her brain.The darkness slowly disappeared and the creaking sound of the door made her aware that morning had come. Another day of torture and pain."Hey, wake up!"Before cold water or anything worse could be splashed on her, Hailey leaned away from her mother's embrace who was also awake."Take your food!" The man burly man threw a food box and a water bottle at them
***"Ken, you have to save me. These strange men have captured me and they won't release me until you come. If you don't come alone, Ken, they're going to kill me and my Mum. They have laid traps for you, Ken—"Hailey was cut shut by a hard slap across her face. Bound to a chair with ropes, cold water was splashed on her face. She licked the side of her lips, tasting the metallic liquid; the only thing that kept her from fainting."Damnit! Woman. I told you to leave the trap part out! Are you deaf or what!?" The man holding a camera in front of her shouted. "Now, let's take another video. You will say everything you were asked to.""Stop wasting your time, Man," the portly man said and walked forward. "I don't think this lady is willing to cooperate.""I told you she's a stubborn one," Chloe scoffed from a corner."Now listen to me, Young lady." The portly man approached her and lifted her chin. "If you keep acting this way, we can't fulfill our promise to you. Give us your cooperation
***"Buddy, this is serious. How could she just disappear into thin air? Is there a chance that they're hidden somewhere in this city?"This city? Probably not. Kendrick had turned the whole city upside down. He'd deployed every force he could think of. They'd searched everywhere; every warehouse, every dilapidated building. There was no sign of them. It had been three days and there wasn't any traces of them. He'd driven to the cemetery that day, hoping more than anything that she hadn't spent the night there. And his prayers turned out to work. Only that, what actually happened was worse than spending a night in the cemetery. The sight of her phone by the cemetery gates was all he needed to know that something bad had happened. She was abducted. And there was still no traces of the suspects. Her sister and that guy. "Damnit! This is all screwed up." Devon paced for a while before sitting on the couch. "You didn't tell me you've taken her back. You never should have allowed her
