DYLAN
"You are kidding me, right, Dad?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
This was obviously some sick joke he was playing on me. No need to get worked up. Dad took the newspaper from my hands and read the headline on the front page. A smile immediately formed on his gracefully aging face. He looked somewhat satisfied.
"Well, at least the media did everything right this time around,” he commented before tossing it away on his desk.
My dad then leaned against his desk and put all his focus on me. I was fuming. He motioned for me to sit down and I did so reluctantly. I just needed a simple and straightforward explanation but my dad seemed to have a different plan.
“Dyl, my son, you have to get married," he said softly in his convincing voice.
I raked my hair with my hand trying my best to look calm. I failed terribly at it. I lowered my tie and unbuttoned the neck button. I poured myself a glass of water and gulped it down then looked straight into his eyes.
“What on earth is this drama? Have you finally decided to ruin my life, Dad?"
"I'd never ruin your life on purpose, son. Trust me when I say this was harder for me than you can ever imagine."
"You look damn proud of yourself and pretty calm about this whole nonsense, Dad!"
"This has to happen. Both companies need each other for the future success of the companies. For this to happen there has to be some sort of strong connection plus in the past this has been a tradition of collaborating in projects and lending a hand. Our company will get shares in their successful business and so will their company," he explained, swinging a pen.
"The other major reason is to close off opponents. We will be collaborating on multiple projects this year. We are stronger this way as we can get access to Weston family benefits and so can they to ours. No one will question us as we will be family. You know how some board members react to non family members receiving private benefits. I’m building your future, son."
"I can't get married. You know I can't. I don't mean to disrespect your decision or anything but I will not get married. You could have at least told me before spilling it to the media," I explained to him my thoughts running wild.
"It's not a life commitment, Dylan. One year only."
"One year can screw up my entire life, Dad."
"It won't. You have to go and get ready, son. We have a few hours left," he was avoiding eye contact. He looked calm but his eyes were much of a ruckus than mine.
Benjamin Cameron was my everything. My dad. He had been part of every moment of my life and held my hand through the darkest phases ever.
Losing my mom five years ago to cancer when I was just twenty one was a blow to me because she was my everything. She was Dad's everything.
My mom had the solution to almost every problem in the world. She loved us both unconditionally. It was quite a hard blow for the two of us.
He always did what was best for me and I always tried my best to obey him at all times. This time it was different. This was not just a matter of my heart. Gwen's heart was at stake too.
"You know I love Gwen, Dad. We've been together for two years and I want to be with only her. She'll be my wife. She'll be the mother of my children. Your daughter-in-law, Dad. You already approved of our relationship."
I could feel my heart bleed and beat wildly. Gwen was too perfect and fragile to handle the idea of me marrying another woman. I had promised that I'd marry her come hail come thunder.
"Gwen Carter is the love of your life, that I know perfectly well and I have no objection to your relationship. You can marry her after a year. I made this decision after getting her consent."
"What? You talked to her about this?" I asked, clearly shocked. I couldn't even imagine what she was going through.
"Dylan, you don't have to develop feelings for the Weston bride you'll marry. You just have to be her husband publicly. In private you guys can maybe settle for friendship and live your lives peacefully. This should be easy for you son."
"I'm disappointed in you, Dad. This is not the life I wanted to live," I admitted.
I didn't want to prolong this discussion. Dad had done a lot for me and right now he needed something from me desperately. I could tell he was hurting. I was hurting too. A hell lot. I had to leave his office immediately. I didn't want to say stuff I'd regret.
"I'll be there. I don't want a grand wedding."
"It's a small ceremony so don't worry. Dylan, I'm proud of you and I know you'll respect your wife. I'll let you calm down then we'll talk. Ezra has the details. He will fill you in."
I had nothing to say so I simply stood up and marched out.
I was currently in an emotional rollercoaster. I needed to breathe. I needed to see my baby. I needed to know she was okay. Only she could give me strength to pull through.
I collapsed into my office chair and closed my eyes. I was frustrated. I left the door open. I had to think of the perfect words to tell Gwen. I needed to see her urgently and hold her tight in my arms.
“Hey hey. Guess who's getting married tonight," Ezra said, walking in with his perfect smile plastered on. He had always been the carefree and bubbly type.
I had found more than a best friend in him. He was my brother. My day one.
“Drop it, Ezra. I surely don't need your nagging right now," I told him as he sat across me and crossed his legs.
He looked like he had been busy. “What's up, my man? You look worked up."
"Seriously, Ezra. Is that a question to be asking me right now? I'm about to get married to a stranger here."
"Oh, please. Don't stress about your future bride."
"I'm not worried about her obviously. It's just that I… I”
"Dylan, you know I have your back, bro. I know Gwen is your major concern right now. I already did the job for you."
I shot my head back up and opened my eyes. "You did? How so? Did you see her? Is she okay? Was she crying?"
"Woah woah, bro. Damn you are so freaked out right now. Don't worry your bestie is right here. So, your dad came to her apartment last night," he began playing with the ring on his finger.
"What were you doing there?"
"I drove her home from her shoot. You weren't answering your phone so she called me and I saved the day," he looked proud of himself. He just had to make me feel it with his dreamy tone.
"When will you get into the details?"
"Right. Your dad came around 8 and laid out the issue at hand. I won't lie to you, Dyl, Gwen was shattered but she was strong enough to pull through the conversation."
“She cried a lot right?" I asked the obvious. I could see her beautiful face in my head, tearstained.
"Yup, buddie but after your dad left. He's really a nice man, you know. He was good with her and assured her you'd always love her. After he left she broke down and cried her eyeballs out. Man, she loves you a lot. I held her hand through it all, comforted her and told her words I knew you'd say. I then ordered her favorite pizza, ate some ice cream, watched a movie then she fell asleep comfortably in her bed. She was good this morning and left for another shoot out of town. She said she would call you and made me promise I would see to it that you were okay and coping well. Confirm I'm doing a great job."
What would I ever do without this psycho?
I took a deep breath as Ezra poured a glass of wine. He handed me one and poured one for himself.
"You are amazing, Ezra. Thanks. For everything," I really meant it.
"Don't embarrass me like this, Dylan. What are friends for anyway."
"Yeah, right."
"But hey, you still have to pay me back for all the times I've covered up for you plus writing your homework in high school."
"Well, hello. Who helped you get through all your break ups back then and survive through your nightmares. Not to mention holding your hand in the dark in case there was a monster somewhere out there?”
"Going back to kindergarten now, are we? Should I start?"
"Save me, please. Some memories are way too embarrassing," I chuckled thinking of our crazy memories. We had come a long way.
"Now that you are in a better mood let's address the elephant in the room."
"Right. Let's get it over and done with. Who is this Weston bride? Tell me you did some research."
"Um, yeah. I spent my entire night looking into the Weston family. You know Lynette, Steve and Celeste right?"
Of course I knew them all, especially Steve. We had worked on some projects together plus we were in the same class in high school.
As for Celeste she happened to be friends with Gwen. We were together in high school plus now they were both signed under the same modeling agency. We had met a couple of times before. One awkward thing would be having Gwen's best friend as my wife.
"Allow me to read your thoughts. It would be awkward marrying your girlfriend's bestie, right."
“Bingo,” I replied, snapping my fingers.
"Awkward is fortunately out of the picture although in your case I'd prefer the awkward."
“Enlighten me."
"It's not Celeste you'll marry. It's the youngest Weston. Alena Cora Weston," he filled me in, refilling his glass.
"Who's that? I've never heard of any other Weston apart from Steve and Celeste."
"Right. I was shocked too. Well, she exists and she'll be your bride.”
"Well since she is a Weston at least I won't get stuck with some socially awkward freak who has to be taught how this world works."
At least, right?
"Eh, I wouldn't be so sure. She's the unpopular one. According to some sources she barely speaks."
"That's a good thing for me."
"She has no social life. She's been described as boring, plain, Weston unworthy, etcetera etcetera. Some sources give positive remarks too."
"Don't tell me I'm about to get stuck in some boring marriage. She doesn't sound like my type at all. I bet we can't even pass for friendship."
"Wait until you meet her then judge later."
"Is she cute?" I asked, making us both laugh. It was like our cliché phrase from high school.
"See for yourself, Dylan. Personally, I think she's fine,” Ezra said, handing me his cellphone. If she was just fine then it meant she wasn't anything close to Gwen.
The girl in the photo was sad. She looked young and innocent. She wasn't my type. I had no hopes of us ever getting along.
Everything came crashing back. All the stress and depression of this unwanted marriage. My mood changed.
"That's an old photo, Dylan so don't judge using that one. There isn't much about her on the internet. Maybe she is better in person. Give her a chance."
"We just can't be."
"If that's what you want, fine. You can always change your mind. Time's ticking, buddy, let’s go."
I hated this. I hated her. Why did she have to come into my life? She was an unwelcome change in my life.
ALENA"Smile, Cora. This is your moment," Steve whispered into my ear as he walked me down the aisle. Nervous was an underestimation of how I was feeling. My palms were sweaty, my knees were trembling and my face was burning. I wore a gorgeous mermaid dress that was obviously a designer dress. It must have been Celeste who picked it out because everything was her taste. I had put a lot of effort into my looks for the first time in forever. I hoped it was at least fine. I dreaded this moment. I had always dreamt of my dad walking me down the aisle but fate had had other plans. At least Steve was there. I knew deep down he still had a soft spot for his younger sibling. We finally made it to the altar and there I was standing next to my would-be husband. Maybe I missed the moment but he hadn't looked at me even once. His face was glued at the priest and he didn't look that happy. Heck, he didn't look happy at all. Despite all that, I was still amazed by how effortlessly handsome he
ALENAMy tears finally gave in. He was hammering my heart. This was nerve wracking. “What… What is going on? I've never met you before but you seem to have something strong against me." "You just had to come into my life the moment when everything was beautiful. You actually seem happy with this arrangement." "Did I ruin something precious to you?" "Yes. Yes you did! I can't be with the love of my life right now because of you. She is my everything. My world. I wanted her to be at the altar with me. I wanted to say wedding vows to her." "You have a..." "Yes, I have a girlfriend, and I'm not ending things with her. If anyone has the right to be my wife then that's her." Adrenaline flooded my veins. He was in love with another woman? By the looks of it this wasn't just some ordinary love. He was head over heels in love with this woman. His eyes were now sad. I could see the intense pain and sadness in his gorgeous eyes. The fact that I was the cause of this pain stabbed my pou
ALENAFinally there was some peace and quiet after two weeks of constant chattering, long sessions of ‘how to do this and that' and all the drama. We only had one night till the wedding reception which would be a grand affair so everyone left the house to give us privacy. This was not just some ordinary wedding reception. A billionaire from the Cameron family was getting married to a Weston. It had to be a wedding reception that would make history. It was belated but for the sake of tradition we had to have it and make things officially official in front of everyone. I had to be taught literally everything from scratch because according to my mom, she wouldn't like being embarrassed in front of all the reputable people that would be present. I had come across Dylan a couple of times downstairs and in the hallways. He had not looked at me even once and whenever I tried to speak to him he just left me there looking stupid. He was very busy with the preparations. Everyone was. I won
ALENA"Uh, I'm sorry. I didn't know that you were in here. I'll leave," I apologized, nervously turning to leave. "No. Please come in, Alena," he offered, pausing his game. He stood up and guided me in then he patted next to him gesturing for me to sit down. He looked friendly and welcoming so I sat next to him making sure there was some considerable distance between us. I avoided eye contact with him and started playing with my fingers. "Awww. You are so shy, it's cute,” he gushed tucking loose strands of my hair behind my ear. My cheeks immediately heated up and I found myself smiling shyly like an idiot. There was a dramatic pause as he stared at me with his elbows resting on his thighs. I turned to him and saw an amused sparkle in his warm welcoming chocolate brown eyes and then he broke into a smile. "What?" I asked, trying my best to avoid eye contact. Who on earth was he? "You are so adorable and lovely. I think I'm falling,” he murmured in a singsong voice that made m
DYLAN"Is everything in place, Ezra? Everything has to be perfect," I asked Ezra, patiently checking my watch momentarily. "That's like the fifth time in a row you've asked me that obvious question, Dylan," Ezra replied, putting his hand on my arm. "Everything is perfect and everything will go according to plan. Your dad, Mrs. Weston, Celeste, Steve and other relatives are handling the guests,” he reassured me. "And Alena? When will she be done? It's been like three hours since they started dressing her up." "Oh, c'mon. She's the bride. She has to look exquisite so they are putting their maximum effort into it. They should be done in fifteen minutes." "Fine. I guess I have to wait then.” "I'll head to the ballroom. All the best, Dylan. If you need anything at all, I will make sure I'm in sight at all times.” "Sure, Ezra. See you around." Ezra disappeared down the hallway leaving me all alone in the hallway. I was nervous but I made sure to maintain a neutral facial expression.
DYLANThe events of the night rolled in perfectly well as I introduced Alena to my relatives and close friends. I liked how she handled my relatives. She was polite and treated them like her own family. Gwen had no time and patience to handle my family. We seriously had to work on it if she was going to be my wife. I noticed that she was smiling. Her beguiling oyster white teeth lit up the room. After a long while of attending to guests we were served some amazing wine. The Westons owned a successful beverage company that produced the best wine, alcohol, juices, sodas, energy drinks and so forth. Their company was worth billions. They were into other industries too like us but that was their major production. "You are doing great. Great job with your voice." "Uhm, thanks. You guys must have really worked hard on this. It's perfect and I'm sure everyone loves it." She was just adorable and it was like she only had nice stuff to say. "You didn't reply me the other day when I apolo
DYLANl slowly opened my eyes when I heard my bedroom door open. Last night had been one of the most tiring nights of my life and I had gotten a chance to retire to bed as late as 4 a.m after dealing with all the post wedding reception drama of clearing up stuff and ensuring that all guests from far away were comfortable in their hotel rooms. I raised my head removing the warm blanket I was covering myself with and looked at the door. All the confusion that clouded me dispersed when I saw Gwen parade in quietly closing the door behind her. "Hey honey," she greeted as she approached my comfortable and huge bed. "Hey baby,” I replied as she crawled onto the bed and pecked my lips. "It's already noon and you're still in bed. You must be exhausted," she remarked. "Yeah. I had a long night last night and I still feel like lying down," I replied yawning and stretching my arms as I sat up. "Security let me in and since I saw no one in the house I headed right up to your bedroom," she e
DYLANI was flicking through the channels on TV in my main lounge when I saw Sophie and Axel amble in with wide grins on their faces and large boxes of pizza in their hands."Hey hey. Someone ordered pizza and we are just on time," Sophie babbled as she dramatically sniffed the air around her with a satisfied grin on her beautiful face. "Yeah, yeah. It's like you have some magical timer that tells you I'm about to have a feast." "And you never go wrong with the toppings either. You are just amazing," Axel added. "Did you just admit that I am amazing?" I asked Axel with one eyebrow raised. “Ummmm, I'm pretty sure I was referring to the pizza," he replied squinting his eye before the two Coopers squashed me between them and placed the boxes on the coffee table. "There is a hell lotta space in this room. Why squash me?” "We just feel like bugging you today and hey. Someone's in a good mood. I see you are like glowing today and smiling too. What's up Dyl?" Axel said pushing a little
ALENA’S EPILOGUE Our black SUV pulled up in Mom's driveway a little late in the afternoon and we all got out of the car. Amelia was snuggled in her daddy's arms, a place I knew was one of her favourites in the whole world and the way he paid enough attention to her and kept her smiling just made their bond stronger.Aidan and Iris were on either of my sides each holding each of my hands tightly as we walked up the driveway to the main entrance. We had all been looking forward to this family gathering for some time now. Spending time together, catching up on each other's lives and just being there for each other was something we all enjoyed. We were a family and meeting up together like this was always a pleasure."Thank you so much, Mommy, for buying me these pretty sparkly shoes and sparkly dress," Iris squealed excitedly, jumping up and down on her feet as we walked, staring admirably at her new outfit. "I feel like a princess," she added, giving me a brilliant smile that revealed
FIVE YEARS LATERDYLAN’S EPILOGUEThey say that you will never truly understand something until it happens to you.I honestly never paid much attention to this saying until realistic things happening in my own life started weighing much on it and opening my eyes to how everything I was once told about this big mystery called life started unfolding before my own eyes and manifesting in my life. Many a time, Dad would tell me about how marriage and fatherhood changed his life greatly for the better and it barely made any meaningful sense to me, but right now in this very moment, bonding with my baby and showering her with unconditional love made it all make perfect sense. There was something inexplicably intoxicating about seeing our precious bundle of joy happy with a radiant smile on her face. That smile had to be the prettiest thing I had ever seen, for it extended deep into my soul and filled me with joy. I couldn't resist smiling back at her with an even brighter smile, placing the
ALENADylan twirled me around, dipping me as he leaned forward closer to me. Staring at the masterpiece of a husband before me, my breathing became shallow and my heart felt heavy in my chest.Dylan pulled me back up into his arms and I rested my head on his chest and let him sway my body as the chorus rolled in. The song twirled like thread around us, the rhythm of our bodies simply passionate and majestic. I was deep in love."Alena, you're the inspiration for this precious song, and I just wanna see your face light up since you put me on. So now I say goodbye to the old me, it's already gone. And I can't wait to get you home, just to let you know, you are...""The love of my life," we whispered together in unison as I joined him in saying some of the lyrics along to the song playing.I was crying. He was way too sweet. I never imagined he'd be able to love me this much and take our relationship to a whole new level.Couples eventually started joining us on the dancefloor. I looked
ALENADylan pulled me towards him gently but firmly by my waist and he placed his lips firmly on mine, cupping my cheek with his hand. His lips were soft, almost silken against my own. Our lips fitted perfectly as if they were meant for each other. Moving against each other, feeling each other.Warmth blossomed in my chest, sparks igniting. This was beautiful and magical, a dream come true. When we pulled away from each other, the crowd was cheering loudly for us, clapping and everything. We both chuckled, holding hands tightly. We turned and faced everyone. Their cheers grew even louder and more enthusiastic.I could see Mom sitting in front with Benjamin, Steve and Celeste. Ezra was in front on the other side with Axel, Sophie and Elizabeth. Everyone else followed behind them. They all looked happy for us.Dylan and I stepped down from the wedding altar and we proceeded down the aisle. Everyone rose and started throwing confetti at us as we walked out. It was perfect.I looked up at
ALENA"Of course, I will. When can we start making the preparations?"Dylan laughed, pinching my nose. "Silly, I mean today. Everything is already set. You just have to get ready and walk down the aisle.""You're kidding right?""I'm dead serious, honey. Everything's the way you wanted it and mostly your choice. I know this isn't our first wedding, but I want us to consider this our actual wedding because the previous wasn't even one. This time around, I'm marrying you willingly with pride."I laughed, failing to believe this. "How? I can't believe this.""Believe it, baby. We're getting married and this time around the proper way. I've been so excited to finally take you as my wife the proper way and give you the joy you deserve. I want to marry you, Alena.""Dylan, how did you even think of this? Just how?" I asked him, blinking away my tears. He wiped away my tears with his hands. "Because I want to see you happy and make your dreams come true. It's called love, honey. You've drown
ALENADylan opened the door of his car on my side and I stepped out, taking his hand which he had extended politely towards me to help me out. I murmured a polite thank you with a smile on my face as he helped out and closed the door once I was standing next to him.We linked arms and he gave me a small peck on my forehead before we started walking down the pathway that led to the dock of a beautiful lake. There were bright heart shaped lanterns hanging on tree branches and rose petals artistically scattered on the pathway we were walking on. Star shaped twinkle lights were wound around branches and lining the pathway. It was breathtakingly beautiful. It was a beautiful sunset and it felt extraordinarily magical with the water in the lake glimmering beneath the beautiful sky, looking calm and inviting.I had no idea if it was the beautiful weather and scene that added the special magical effect or if it was the exceptional man right next to me, holding me like his entire life depended
DYLANI loved it when she played dirty. I loved seeing that side of her that only I knew. I loved this state where she was raw, untamed and fierce sexy."Naughty girl," I chuckled, smacking her butt firmly. She winced, her lips cracking into a wider smile."If I am naughty, what are you?" she purred, pressing her body firmly into mine. She bit her bottom lip tenderly, looking at me with lust filled eyes."Your sexy husband who loves bringing the naughtiness out of you." I smacked Alena's butt one more time, pressing her body into mine at the same time."Ah," she moaned, throwing her head back. She loved it.I took my spoon and scooped some ice cream onto it. I trailed the spoon from her earlobe down to her throat. She shivered, looking at my hand. "Cold," she breathed."I'll set you on fire," I promised and with those words, I smashed my lips onto her neck, earning a loud moan from her.I held her firmly close to me by her butt as I attacked her neck with deep kisses, soft nibbles and
DYLANShe took her wine glass from me and looked up at me, taking a step closer. "Careful what you wish for, Princess. I want to, I can and I will eat you," I said, closing the small gap between us."Is that a promise?" she asked me, running her finger slowly down my torso. I had been working out a lot to get back in shape. All my hard work hadn't gone to waste."It is," I affirmed, brushing my lips against her smooth skin. "And you know I never break my promises."Alena stood on her toes and she pecked my lips. She held both of our glasses, looking deep into my eyes with her bottom lip between her white teeth. I poured the wine and took my glass from her."What are we toasting to?" she asked me."To us. To our lives, love, freedom and everything we ever wanted that we can proudly say we achieved.""Cheers to that," she said, raising her glass."Cheers." We clicked our glasses and washed down the red wine together in one go. We had a second round and we drank the wine in the same mann
DYLAN"No," she mumbled quietly. She was crying."Show me your face. I want to look at you," I spoke softly."Do I have to?" she replied quietly. She sounded cute and in my head, I could see a cute pout on her lips as she said so. That made me smile."Yes. You have to," I murmured, kissing her temples. Alena slowly pulled away from me and she sat up, facing me. She had tears in her eyes and a few had fallen down her cheeks. I wiped them away using my thumbs."And why is my beautiful princess crying when we're supposed to be celebrating?" I asked her, taking both of her warm hands into mine. I planted sweet kisses on both of them and looked up at her. "I don't know," she mumbled, looking at our hands. "Tears of relief if there's anything of that sort I guess.""You don't have to hide your feelings from me, you know. It's okay to cry if you feel like it. We all express joy and relief in different ways.""Does that mean I can bawl my eyes out and you'll still be okay with it?""Hmmm...
