ALENA
"Uh, I'm sorry. I didn't know that you were in here. I'll leave," I apologized, nervously turning to leave.
"No. Please come in, Alena," he offered, pausing his game.
He stood up and guided me in then he patted next to him gesturing for me to sit down. He looked friendly and welcoming so I sat next to him making sure there was some considerable distance between us.
I avoided eye contact with him and started playing with my fingers.
"Awww. You are so shy, it's cute,” he gushed tucking loose strands of my hair behind my ear.
My cheeks immediately heated up and I found myself smiling shyly like an idiot. There was a dramatic pause as he stared at me with his elbows resting on his thighs.
I turned to him and saw an amused sparkle in his warm welcoming chocolate brown eyes and then he broke into a smile.
"What?" I asked, trying my best to avoid eye contact.
Who on earth was he?
"You are so adorable and lovely. I think I'm falling,” he murmured in a singsong voice that made me slightly chuckle.
"Gosh. Even your smile is quite a killer," he teased, making my smile brighten up.
It made him chuckle. Wow.
"You must be wondering who I am. Well, allow me to introduce this heavenly masterpiece to you," he said, dramatically tilting his head and raking his hair with his fingers.
"I am Ezra Grayson AKA your husband's best friend but others like calling me his brother from another mother," he introduced himself.
"Well, nice to meet you, Ezra. I'm sure you already know who I am," I tried to sound a little loud.
"Of course I do, Alena. We'll be seeing each other very often this coming year so get ready to be wowed the whole year."
"I really can't wait," I replied, grinning widely.
He was one of a kind. He was carefree, humorous, energetic and generally the lit type. In just a few minutes I could tell he resembled the old Alena. The real Alena.
"So for starters, I'd like to apologize on behalf of Dylan for being a jerk to you. I might not have been there but I know he has been a jerk to you from day one."
“He hates me," I said and sighed.
Ezra scooted over to me and placed his hand gently on my shoulder.
“He doesn't. Dyl is an amazing guy. He is not some cold and uptight billionaire. He is fun, free and generally an amazing human being. Take it from his day one friend."
"I guess I'm just the unlucky one, then."
"No. It's just that you walked into his life at the wrong time."
"I didn't know he had a girlfriend."
"Well, there must have been some miscommunication but we clearly told your family about this and they said you agreed to it, plus Celeste knows that Dyl has been in love with Gwen for like two years now."
"Even though. I just don't get why he hates me. It's not tike I'm disturbing their relationship, right? I mean they are free to do whatever they like."
For the first time in five years I finally found someone I felt comfortable talking to.
“It's just a tough phase. but don't worry, he will come around soon.”
"Well, if you say so," I replied, looking at him and giving him a dry smile. Hands down, he had the die hard for looks.
"And I want you to know that if you ever want anything, I'm here for you, Alena. I'll support you.”
"Says my husband's best friend. Of course you'll always take his side.”
“Well, you are right but I'll take his side if he is in the right and if he is in the wrong, then I'll drag him back to the right. So this is like a win-win situation, you see."
"So you like, cover for him all the time?"
"If you'd like to phrase it that way then, yes."
“How do you phrase it?" I asked, my interest piqued.
"I'd normally say he is a lost cause without me."
"Wow. I wish I had a friend like that."
"You guys can always share me. I'm one of a kind, you know. Confirm."
"Confirmed. You know I wish I was like you," I told him as I turned to face him.
I was suddenly feeling confident and my voice was no longer troubling me.
"Umm. How so?"
"You are a free person and your socializing skills are quite impressive. I try but I can't find my way around socializing with people.”
"Maybe you should start by working on your inner self. Believe in yourself and be very self confident," he encouraged.
I listened attentively as he told me more about believing in myself.
"Don't worry, Alena. We'll work on it."
"Thanks, Ezra. It was nice meeting you. I'm looking forward to an amazing year."
"Trust me, you won't be disappointed. It was nice meeting you too."
At least there was some positivity.
Ezra told me that we'd be having dinner together at a restaurant so I went upstairs to get ready. I had spent the entire day lying in bed. A little bit of fresh air would do.
I settled for a pair of jeans and a cute white sweater. I seriously needed a wardrobe redo since most of my clothes wouldn't be good for going out in public. I barely went outside back at home so it wasn't exactly my fault.
I made it downstairs and joined Dylan, Ezra and Gwen. They were all in casual clothes, at least. Ezra gave me a smile that assured me that I looked fine. The rest did not even acknowledge me.
Dylan was driving with Gwen on the passenger's seat next to him. His hand was on her thigh the whole drive.
We finally made it to the restaurant after a long drive of watching cute couple fights over silly stuff and Ezra trying to distract me.
The entire restaurant was empty. I guessed they had booked the whole place. We sat at our table with Ezra and I facing Dylan and Gwen. I was beginning to get sick of their cuteness.
We were going through the menus with the rest sipping red wine which we had been served when we heard the clicking of heels. I shot my head up and saw a brunette parade towards us. Everything about her screamed trouble.
I noticed that everyone around the table quietly groaned as the entire mood took a three hundred and sixty degree turn. She joined the table and sat next to Dylan, immediately clinging onto his arm then she grimaced at me.
"Dyl, baby. How are you?" Her voice was really disturbing.
“Crystal, what are you doing here?" Dylan asked, his brows furrowed.
"Are you giving me a cold shoulder because of her?" she glowered, rolling her eyes at me and it was as if they would pop out of their sockets.
"Your presence here is not needed. Leave, Crystal," he cautioned. The tension was thick as the veins in his neck were standing out. He looked mad.
"Dyl..."
"I said leave!" he bellowed, freeing his arm and causing Crystal to jump back.
She furiously stood up then and snatched a glass of red wine from Dylan. The unexpected happened. She ruthlessly emptied the contents of the glass on my face and the liquid ran down to stain my sweater. I closed my eyes immediately. I didn't want to see anyone's face. The humiliation was way too much and the silence was killing me.
I stood up on impulse and ran out as fast as my legs could carry me. I just wanted to run away from everything. Run away from the world. I did everything I could to make sure no one was following me and if anyone was, then they would never catch me.
After a lot of running, I found myself in a park. It was quiet and empty. Perfect. I fell into a disheveled heap and felt hot tears prick my eyes. I was about to break down when a voice interrupted me.
"Are you okay?" an unfamiliar voice asked.
“Just… just leave me alone, please.”
I didn't want to look back at him.
"Do you need a hug?" he asked.
“I said leave me alone!" I shouted.
Whenever I was mad, my voice came rushing back to me. I couldn't control it which was why I preferred staying quiet when I was mad. I suddenly felt someone hug me from behind. The hug was sudden and warm. It was something I had been yearning for for years. My tears involuntarily poured down my cheeks like tiny rivulets. I cried my heart out like a baby with no limits. I needed it.
After a while of sniffling and sobbing, I felt better. I stood up and so did the stranger. I looked up at him. He was taller than me with glorious features.
"I saw you running across the street and thought I'd help. Are you okay now?"
"Yes. Thank you.”
"Sometimes life's a mess. But hey, crying is totalty normal and we need it," he said gazing at the stars.
I was shivering so he took off his coat and offered it to me. I rejected it but he insisted.
“Who are you?" I asked out of interest.
"Don't worry. We'll meet again soon, Alena Cora Weston Cameron," he replied casually and then he left the way he had come. Mysterious. Weird.
I saw a familiar car pull by and Ezra and Dylan bounced out. They both looked concerned and I felt important.
"Alena! Are you okay?" Ezra asked, worriedly grasping me by the shoulders.
“How did you find me?"
I had made sure to go via complicated routes so that they would have a hard time finding me. I was impressed.
“Dyl got an anonymous message that you were here. Are you okay?" His kind face was laced with concern.
"Can we go home? I don't feel like talking right now."
"Sure, Alena," Ezra replied then he went on to open the door for me.
I was about to move forward when Dylan gently grabbed my arm.
"I'm sorry, I mean it," he said.
DYLAN"Is everything in place, Ezra? Everything has to be perfect," I asked Ezra, patiently checking my watch momentarily. "That's like the fifth time in a row you've asked me that obvious question, Dylan," Ezra replied, putting his hand on my arm. "Everything is perfect and everything will go according to plan. Your dad, Mrs. Weston, Celeste, Steve and other relatives are handling the guests,” he reassured me. "And Alena? When will she be done? It's been like three hours since they started dressing her up." "Oh, c'mon. She's the bride. She has to look exquisite so they are putting their maximum effort into it. They should be done in fifteen minutes." "Fine. I guess I have to wait then.” "I'll head to the ballroom. All the best, Dylan. If you need anything at all, I will make sure I'm in sight at all times.” "Sure, Ezra. See you around." Ezra disappeared down the hallway leaving me all alone in the hallway. I was nervous but I made sure to maintain a neutral facial expression.
DYLANThe events of the night rolled in perfectly well as I introduced Alena to my relatives and close friends. I liked how she handled my relatives. She was polite and treated them like her own family. Gwen had no time and patience to handle my family. We seriously had to work on it if she was going to be my wife. I noticed that she was smiling. Her beguiling oyster white teeth lit up the room. After a long while of attending to guests we were served some amazing wine. The Westons owned a successful beverage company that produced the best wine, alcohol, juices, sodas, energy drinks and so forth. Their company was worth billions. They were into other industries too like us but that was their major production. "You are doing great. Great job with your voice." "Uhm, thanks. You guys must have really worked hard on this. It's perfect and I'm sure everyone loves it." She was just adorable and it was like she only had nice stuff to say. "You didn't reply me the other day when I apolo
DYLANl slowly opened my eyes when I heard my bedroom door open. Last night had been one of the most tiring nights of my life and I had gotten a chance to retire to bed as late as 4 a.m after dealing with all the post wedding reception drama of clearing up stuff and ensuring that all guests from far away were comfortable in their hotel rooms. I raised my head removing the warm blanket I was covering myself with and looked at the door. All the confusion that clouded me dispersed when I saw Gwen parade in quietly closing the door behind her. "Hey honey," she greeted as she approached my comfortable and huge bed. "Hey baby,” I replied as she crawled onto the bed and pecked my lips. "It's already noon and you're still in bed. You must be exhausted," she remarked. "Yeah. I had a long night last night and I still feel like lying down," I replied yawning and stretching my arms as I sat up. "Security let me in and since I saw no one in the house I headed right up to your bedroom," she e
DYLANI was flicking through the channels on TV in my main lounge when I saw Sophie and Axel amble in with wide grins on their faces and large boxes of pizza in their hands."Hey hey. Someone ordered pizza and we are just on time," Sophie babbled as she dramatically sniffed the air around her with a satisfied grin on her beautiful face. "Yeah, yeah. It's like you have some magical timer that tells you I'm about to have a feast." "And you never go wrong with the toppings either. You are just amazing," Axel added. "Did you just admit that I am amazing?" I asked Axel with one eyebrow raised. “Ummmm, I'm pretty sure I was referring to the pizza," he replied squinting his eye before the two Coopers squashed me between them and placed the boxes on the coffee table. "There is a hell lotta space in this room. Why squash me?” "We just feel like bugging you today and hey. Someone's in a good mood. I see you are like glowing today and smiling too. What's up Dyl?" Axel said pushing a little
ALENAI monotonously browsed through the magazine I was holding as I was buried in a fluffy bean bag.How did I get to be so unlucky?I had a die-hard-for billionaire for a husband who I was currently on our honeymoon with yet it seemed like it was just some ordinary boring period with me, myself, and I.I tossed the magazine away after I came across an article about babies and motherhood stuff. It was like a hard slap in the face. My husband didn't even want to look at me or touch me.How on earth would I ever get that joy of motherhood that I yearned for when I was trapped in this loveless marriage for one gruesomely painful year?I lazily got up and slipped into my fluffy slippers. I dragged myself to the window and looked outside and the sight just made my heart sink way much more.Ibiza, Spain. That one island which was part of my dream destinations. It was the perfect honeymoon destination but only for true lovers not arranged couples like Dylan and I.We had settled into our vi
ALENATears welled up in my eyes, begging for mercy, but he didn't seem to care as he hurtled toward me.So Prince Charming had a beast side that he was going to unleash any moment from now. The thought itself made my heart a jackhammer.Once again fear found me. It spoke to me in its cackling voice, commanding my legs to go weak and my stomach to lurch. My back finally hit the wall and I was trapped. Dylan took one step leaving a small distance between us. I couldn't look at his eyes anymore so I dropped my teary eyes to the floor."L-let me go," I stuttered trying to blink away my tears."I am not even touching you, Princess," he growled. "What do you want from me?"I whispered, closing my eyes.I felt his breath fanning my ear as he moved closer. I could literally feel the heat of his body on my face. I also couldn't miss the fact that he smelt crazy good."I want to give you what you want. You want my love and affection right? You want me to perform my duties as a husband right an
ALENAI woke up to a stinging and burning sensation in my eyes. I sat up and rubbed my eyes which reminded me of the not-so-pleasant incidents of the previous day. They still hurt from my possibly over-exaggerated crying. After thinking about it over the night, I concluded that I had acted immature.I yawned softly and slipped out of my blankets. The bed was crazy comfortable and I could sleep for the rest of the day but I needed some sunshine.I stood up and was about to go to the bathroom when I saw him. Dylan Cameron. My husband. He was sleeping on the couch with his blanket on the floor. It must have fallen overnight. It made me feel guilty that he was sleeping on a couch that wasn't that comfortable to sleep on and I had a huge bed all to myself.I quietly walked over to him. Luckily, the floor was carpeted. I just didn't want to wake him up. I picked up the fluffy blanket and I just found myself holding it up to my nose.Gracious heavens. Maybe it was me but it smelt like him an
ALENAI opened my suitcase then took out some stuff I would need and I put it in my beach bag. I then went to the kitchen and picked out some fruits and put them in a picnic basket. I made some sandwiches, kebabs, and a smoothie, then I packed them.I also packed some yogurts, fruit juices, and potato chips. I would have fun on my own like usual. We had another bathroom so I changed out of the dress I had worn to impress Dylan but failed miserably at it and wore white high-waist shorts, a turquoise blue bikini top, and a visor.I slung my beach bag onto my shoulder, carried my picnic basket then slid on my headphones.I had a map guiding me to the beach and it was pretty much efficient and easy to use. It took me roughly twenty minutes to get to the beach. It was private and I loved it. I loved having some me time and enjoying my own personal space without anyone judging me.I spread my picnic blanket on the white sand away from the water and put down all my stuff. I applied sunscreen
DYLAN"Baby, you have to wake up now. It's almost noon. Come on, Dyl," Gwen purred as her fingers brushed my hair."Two more minutes. I'll be up soon," I murmured, and I felt her peck my lips."Your dad must be worried about you, Dyl. You have to go home."Oh shit! I quickly shot my eyes open and sat up. I looked around and realized I wasn't in my bedroom. I was in Gwen's bedroom. To top it all off, I was naked. We definitely had sex. I couldn't exactly recall what happened, but I remembered coming to Gwen's apartment after a very long day to talk and ending up getting wasted on wine. The previous week had been hell. The work was too much, as the new collection had just been launched. It was selling well on the market, but we had to work hard to keep it constantly at the top.Every day I left home early and came back very late. I didn't even get a chance to see Alena for the whole week. Nevertheless, she left me notes of encouragement every day on the kitchen table. After work the pre
DYLANI knocked softly at the door, and she opened it for me. Alena was in a plain black oversized tee that covered half her milky thighs and red knee-high socks. Her hair was in a messy bun. Just looking at her caused my thoughts to run wild. She looked so crazy and sexy yet so innocent. Her skin was glowing, and it looked flawless."Hey," she said, looking quite surprised. I noticed how she kept rubbing her shoulders as if they were hurting."Are you okay? What's wrong with your shoulders?" I asked, worriedly lacing my voice."I guess moving the furniture and all the heavy work must have strained my muscles. My shoulders feel kind of stiff, but I'll be fine in the morning.""Let me give you a shoulder massage. It won't take time, and I promise it'll be worth it," I offered, and she slowly nodded. We both sat on her neatly made bed. I took off my shoes and knelt on the bed right behind her, then I started massaging her shoulders. They really were stiff, but as the massage progressed,
DYLANI had just had a meeting over dinner, so I wasn't hungry. I went to the kitchen, and I found Emily there. Just the person I was looking for."Hey, Emily," I said as I placed the envelope I was carrying on the kitchen table.Emily had just finished doing the dishes and was probably about to retire to bed. She was just twenty-two, yet she appeared younger. She was youthful and full of life."Good evening. Let me serve you dinner," she offered politely."No thanks. I already had dinner at work. I'm here to talk to you. Sit down."Emily left what she was doing, and we both sat at the table facing each other. I was exhausted, so I decided to make everything short and precise."Here. This is the money you'll need to complete your studies and write your exams," I said as I handed over the envelope to her."You don't have to keep on working anymore to raise money to complete your studies."Emily took the envelope, and I could see tears well up in her eyes as she opened it and saw all th
DYLANAlena and I walked in silence to my office. I didn't even know what to say to her. She was no longer the woman she was when we exchanged wedding vows and for the period until our honeymoon.Maybe she got fed up with me. She was distancing herself from me. The fact that she was ready to start dating gave me a rude awakening.I just found myself opposing the idea. She was my wife, and I didn't want to share her with anyone else. I didn't want anyone else to get to experience all the cuteness, childishness, and surprises Alena was full of.I couldn't be with her, and at the same time, I didn't want anyone to be with her either. Call me selfish, but sharing her was totally out of the question. She wore red, and she rocked it. It made her stand out, and the way she handled herself naturally was admirable. One of the things I liked the most about her was her relationship with my father. Dad liked her, and so did she. Their conversation was natural, and they were both comfortable with
ALENAOver my dead body! I thought as I quickly freed my hand from his and went on to hold Benjamin's hand instead. I looked into his eyes, and I saw disappointment. He looked hurt."I'll come with you, Benjamin. Let's go," I said, and he nodded and led the way.Dylan grabbed my hand and drew me back to him. "Come with me. I won't do anything that'll make you uncomfortable, I promise.""When it comes to Gwen, I don't trust you at all. Have fun with your girlfriend," I answered passionately, then I freed my hand and left him standing there. For the first time in a while, I felt successful and victorious. I was able to stand up for myself and say no. I was also able to see the same hurt in his eyes that my eyes held whenever he did things with Gwen in my presence and was rude to me.He tried his best to mask it, but I could tell. His eyes told me a lot about him. They were like the map of his soul. I wanted to explore his mystery, but I was too afraid to let myself in. I was afraid of g
ALENA"I’m nervous as hell, Axel. What if they hate me? What if they say bad things about me? What if I embarrass both my family and the Camerons?" I fussed as I did the final touches on my make-up."Oh Lord! Will you calm down, Alena? You are going to be great. They are going to love you. You are an amazing human being. Who would even say anything mean about you? You are the sweetest person I know, and you are Mrs. Cameron. Your husband is the boss. He commands respect naturally, and everyone respects him. They'll respect you too," Axel encouraged me.My nerves were getting the best of me, and I needed someone to help me. The first person that came to mind was Axel, so I immediately called him, and I was lucky he answered.I heard a baby cry in the background, and it caught my attention."Oh my God! Axel, are you at work? I'm so sorry if I'm disturbing you. I'll call you later when you are free.""I just finished the night shift. I'm free for the next few minutes. I'm holding a frien
ALENA"Yes, dear," Benjamin replied, brushing my cheek with his thumb. Well well. I guess this isn't so bad after all, I thought.Dylan cleared his throat audibly, and we both turned to him."I thought the contract clearly stated that during our marriage she couldn't date anyone. Her mom emphasized that point."Obviously, my mom thought I'd blow everything up and end up running away for my true love. At least she knew me well."I thought it was unfair after some thought about it. You have a girlfriend, so why can't she have a boyfriend? I'll talk to Lynette. There's no question on this one. She has equal liberties in this marriage as much as you do. Right, Alena?""Yes. That's very true, and I agree with you," I replied lively, and I saw Dylan shake his head."Dyl? It's agreed, right?" Benjamin turned to his son, who seemed to be strongly against the idea."What if she blows everything up? Anything can happen once she's in a relationship with a guy. What if she suddenly wants out?""
ALENAHappiness is like a butterfly. The more you chase it, the more it eludes you. But if you turn your attention to other things, it comes and sits softly on your shoulder. In the past month of my marriage and, basically, in the past five years of my life, all I ever did was search for happiness.I tried to please my family. I tried to make them love me again and be part of their happiness, but in the process, I only got much more broken and sad. With Dylan, I realized that maybe I was trying too much. I put up with all his mood swings and looked forward to his laughs, jokes, and hellos every day. When he didn't give me any of those, I started him just so he could at least talk to me.I wanted to be happy with him. I wanted him to include me in his happiness and respect me. I realized all the effort was coming from one side. Was it even worth it? Just eleven more months, and we'd be strangers. I had plans to go far away and start afresh all on my own after this one year. What would
DYLANShe meant every word she said. She was dead serious. I knew she was very capable. She had nearly run over Crystal before because she threw herself at me. She was very possessive of me. I loved it, but at the same time, I feared her jealousy."You are my only woman, Gwen. No one will ever come between us. You are a good person, Gwen, and I know you will never hurt anyone, so don't say that, okay?" I said, kissing her forehead."Dylan Cameron, it's either you make love to me right now or you let me go. I'm dead serious," she said, brushing her fingers against my lips.I swallowed hard. Irresistible offer, but it felt wrong. Something was stopping me. I had just been with Alena. It would seem as if I had only been using her. I didn't want Alena to feel used. I kissed her neck, willing not to use her."I don't have a condom," I gave an excuse."I'm on the pill," she said, and with those words, we lost our minds.A few seconds later, she was lying on a table, and I was hovering over h
