Chapter 11: Chance

Emma’s pov

“Well, it seems like you have a hole in your heart,” the doctor said.

“A hole, like an actual hole in my heart?” I asked him and he nodded.

“Usually, such things aren’t that big of a deal. But yours got bigger over time, it could be because of stress, grief or even a broken heart,” he said.

“Well, that sounds bad,” Daisy said and then looked at me.

“So, what do I need to do? Surgery or medication? What are my options?” I asked him.

“Surgery is the only option in this case,” he answered, and I nodded.

“The risks, how high are they?” I asked the doctor.

“About 60% ma’am, and we will have to perfume the surgery as soon as we can,” he said, and I frowned at this.

“If I wait for some time if I wait for about two months. Will it be too late?” I asked him.

“Actually, it might not be fatal but if you wait for two months then the risks might just go up,” he answered.

“Why do you want to wait? It’s 60% chance which means that you will make it out alive,” Daisy said, and I looked at her.

“But it’s also a 40% chance that I might die,” I said and then looked at the Doctor.

“I will be back tomorrow, is that alright with you? I need to think things through,” I said, and he nodded.

“Not a problem,” the doctor said and as I was walking out Daisy held my hand.

“What are you doing? Why did you say you need to think about it? You need to get that surgery as soon as possible,” she said.

“And I might die, what about Lily?” I asked her, and she frowned.

“You aren’t going to die,” she said, and I chuckled.

I know my luck better than anyone really.

“Can you call Sam and ask him to bring the kids?” I asked Daisy and she looked at me confused but nodded.

While she was calling Sam I booked us a place to sleep.

I thought of calling Maddie, but I couldn’t find the courage.

I didn’t contact her for years and calling her now out of the blue wouldn’t be right.

Plus, she has probably changed her number already.

When I was done I looked at Daisy who didn’t say a word for some time.

We got to the hotel and waited for the kids while I sat down and thought about it.

“I have created a trust fund for all the kids. Jamie, Rose and also my Lily. I have a cabin, I bought it a few years ago. Of course, it will go to Lily, I have some life savings. You can use those to take care of Lily on my behalf,” I said, and Daisy looked at me.

“Nothing is going to happen to you,” she said, and I frowned.

“I am scared Daisy, what if something does happen? My Lily will be left all alone in this world. She would be an orphan,” I said, and Daisy shook her head.

“Technically no, she wouldn’t be an orphan,” she said and then looked at me.

“Her father is still alive, and he is one of the richest man in the world. Your daughter is an heiress,” she said, and I shook my head.

“No, she is not, my Lily is not an heiress. She is my daughter, she is Lily Cooper,” I corrected her, and she shook her head.

“I don’t know what happened between you. But he recognised you by scent Emma, by scent,” she said.

“I saw the longing in his eyes when he was holding your hand. I saw the pain in his eyes as you ran off. It’s the same pain and longing in your eyes as well,” she said, and I chuckled.

“What’s the use? I might die,” I said, and she sighed.

“And Lily? Don’t you want the poor girl to know her family? Don’t you think that she deserves to know her father?” she asked me.

“He thinks that she is someone else’s daughter. I explained it to him time and time again that I didn’t cheat, and he didn’t believe me,” I explained to her.

“So, your daughter is going to suffer because of your stubbornness?” she asked me.

There was a knock on the door, and it was Sam bringing the kids.

“Thank you so much for driving them here,” I said, and he just shrugged.

“It’s alright, I should drive back now so I can get there before nightfall,” Sam said.

I looked at the time and it was almost nightfall.

“Are you sure? You can just stay for the night and share a room with Jamie,” I said, and Sam looked at Daisy.

“Yeah, Uncle Sam please stay because I don’t want to sleep with women,” Jamie said, and we all just glared at him.

“Okay, just for tonight,” Sam said.

“Yes, we will be leaving together tomorrow anyways,” I said, and Daisy looked at me.

I don’t have time for this.

We will go home, and I will spend some needed time with my daughter.

Maybe I will take her out of kindergarten so we can bond for some time.

Travel a bit with my daughter and prepare for the worst.

I need to buy presents for her every birthday and graduation.

“Mommy, are you going to take me to the museum?” Lily asked and I nodded.

“We are going to watch the movie you want to see. We are going to do everything you want,” I said, and she smiled.

“Thank you so much Mommy,” she said as she hugged me.

We had dinner and the kids fell asleep while I looked outside the window.

“This city has changed so much, but still feels the same,” I said.

“Someone framed you, don’t you want to know why?” she asked me.

“How will knowing change anything? It can’t bring back the 6 years that we lost,” I said, and she started laughing.

“I feel sorry for you,” she said, and I looked at her confused.

“You might die, and you know it. Had I known that my husband was going to die. I would have held on tighter to him and hugged him like there is no tomorrow,” she said.

“I would have loved for my kids to see their father and say goodbye,” she said and started sobbing.

“Don’t deny the people who love you the chance to say goodbye. And don’t deny your daughter her father’s love,” she said.

What does she want me to do?

Does she want me to force myself into his life after all these years?

What should I do?
