DAWN
"Come on, do it!" Leslie clears her throat while she crosses her hands on her chest. "You can't be a single lass forever.""What?" I eye her suspiciously. "Why would I say 'yes' to meeting some stranger from a social media messenger?""Well, he slid into your DM's, didn't he?" She stares at me with an evil smirk. "Don't you think it'd be nicer if you could get some ass?""Just look at your bad mouth." I point to her face and scoff like a pre-schooler. "How did your mom let you grow up with such a nasty mouth? Do you think I'll meet someone for the first time and then bang them?""Calm down, Dawny!" She puts up her hand defensively. "If you don't like him, you can just walk away after the date." Then Leslie rolls her eyes. "It's not like I'm telling you to get married to the man." She picks up my phone, sitting near my laptop on my work desk, and holds it up in front of my field of vision, gesturing with her eyes to unlock the screen. When I don't move an inch to do anything about it, she reaches for me and grabs me by the waist. "Don't be such a drama queen, Dawny. You never go out on any of the blind dates I set up for you, and now if you don't go out and meet this man, what chances do you have of ever getting married?"I squirm under her hold but try to do it as gently as possible, considering my best friend had just announced that she has been pregnant for the past two months. Bad luck for me because in response to her pregnancy announcement, I spit out the fact that this guy from this random app wants to take me out on a date tonight.Fuck me."What if he tries to get me to go on more dates with him?"She lets me go and pulls up my phone to my eyesight again. Exhaling a breath, I give in to her persistent demand and unlock the screen. I scroll on my phone screen with a reluctant thumb. Then I finally open the chat screen for my best friend to catch a glimpse of the guy who is even remotely interested in inviting me to a spontaneous rendezvous. The moment I hand over my phone, Leslie brings the phone between her palms and enlarges the profile picture on the top of the chat box. And then she squeals, albeit a bit too loudly."If he tries to get you to come on more dates with him, you ought to go. Just look at his muscular abs and that chiselled jaw. Geez! What's wrong with you, Dawn?"Shrugging my shoulders, I sigh again."I honestly don't know. It's just that this man is way too hot for me, you know?" I glare at her. "What if it's a dumb prank? Am I going to be on the next season's episode of Bamboozled?"Leslie walks up to me and pats me on the back a few times to comfort me."Getting pregnant has made me so soft." She moves on to pat my head. "You have got to do something about your low self-esteem, kid. He probably wants to see you in person and maybe bang you, and that's pretty much it." She snorts. "Don't make it more complicated than it has to be, or I'll smack your behind."I smile at that remark."Go ahead, spank me all you want. Should I bend over on the desk?"Leslie laughs."Wouldn't it be better if that hot man did all that spanking to you in bed?" She winks at me. "Ahh, don't pretend like you don't want it.""Do I want it?""Just take it easy." Leslie hugs me. "What can go wrong?" She pats my shoulder. "It's simply a date."I nod."It might be fun."***I stand near the kerb, waiting for the man from the online messenger to appear in the flesh. Exhaling a harsh breath, I adjust the neckline of my dress. Leslie forced me to don the skimpiest dress from my closet, which wasn't that revealing in the first place. It does have a low-cut neckline which makes me anxious about spilling more of my breasts for the world to see than what is decent.Suddenly, I feel a warm hand on the back of my shoulder, and I pivot on my feet to see who it is. It's none other than the guy from the texts. As soon as my eyes fall on him, he smiles big at me. I let my gaze linger on his body as I check him out from top to bottom. He's hotter than his profile picture. A sudden urge of need courses through my veins and settles in the lower part of my abdomen."Hey!" He offers me his hand to shake. "This is me, Kyle.""Nice to meet you, Kyle."He laughs.I feel his laughter in my bones."Nice to meet you too, Dawn." He puts his hand on my lower back to guide me towards the entrance of this expensive five-star hotel. "Are you ready to get some lovely food in your system, Dawn?"Before I can say more, we stroll inside the spacious lobby, where a hotel receptionist at the front desk confirms our arrangements for the night. Then Kyle nods at me, gesturing me to follow him inside the restaurant on the ground floor.I nod, his words sending shivers down my spine. All at once, my nerves feel all over the place. I feel exhilarated and excited for what's to come. Without another word, I fall in steps next to him as we slowly pace around the restaurant, swiftly moving to our reserved table. He looks up at me as he pulls out a chair. I slide into it with a slight nod in his direction."I made reservations since I know the person who owns the place." I arch an eyebrow at the statement. "He happens to be one of my childhood friends.""Oh, that sounds like a close friend."He smiles."What about you? How are you today?""I'm holding up nicely." Then I finally gape at his face since I don't know how to stop myself from looking at his handsome face. "How has your day been?""Pretty nice because I got to meet you." He offers me a confident smile. "You're beautiful."His casual tone while he gives me that compliment makes me almost jump in my seat. My mouth parts and my eyes widen. I straighten my back, sitting up straight because I'm not used to compliments handed to me so freely.I push some strands of my hair behind my ear."Thank you. That's kind of you to say.""No." He shakes his head. "I mean it. You are drop dead gorgeous and extremely attractive."Hiding my eyes from his face, I smile. He speaks again."Thank you for coming out on this date with me." He waits as a server shows up to refill our glasses and take our orders. We both take a moment to order, and then the server disappears towards the kitchen. "To be honest, I thought a beautiful woman like you would have better things to do than going out on a date with me tonight.""Well, I suppose I didn't." I awkwardly laugh. "You clean up quite well." Then I blow out a breath. "I can't say you're not handsome yourself.""Now try saying that sentence without all the negatives."That earns a chuckle from me."Would you like to order a glass of wine?"I shake my hand, waving that suggestion off."I don't think it will be a good idea for me to drink tonight since I make bad decisions when I get drunk." Exhaling a soft breath, I add. "Don't mind me. You can order something to drink for yourself, whatever you want."His eyes gleam in the muted light of the restaurant."Like, what kind of bad decisions?""I tend to kiss anyone when I'm drunk."That remark makes him laugh."That's all the more reason for you to order yourself wine." Then he waves his words off. "Well, I like to wine and dine with the women I date, so go ahead and drink whatever you'd like to drink." He smiles again. "But I'm not making any promises to behave if you suddenly start kissing me."He offers another charming smile from his arsenal, and I feel my cheeks heat up."Well, I hope not to do any of that." I slowly bring the cold water to my lips as I watch the condensation bead on the surface of the glass. "It would be embarrassing for me."He lowers his head with his lips turned down. Then after a moment, he recovers. And says something that knocks my socks off."What would you say if I told you I want to marry you?"My breath hitches and I let out a gasp. My hand flies to my chest as I almost choke on the cold water. I do a double take as my vocal pitch rises as I somehow utter the words."Marry you?"He crosses his arms on his chest, smiling brightly from ear to ear."Yes, please do me the favour of marrying me tonight, Dawn Brooks. I think I fell in love with you the moment I saw you."My fingers touch my throat as I slowly massage the top of my chest. I watch his eyes hook on the motion of my hands as I spread my fingers out in a fan against the breastbone to calm myself down."Don't do that." He smiles. "It's visually stimulating."Taking another deep breath, I clear my throat."This is not the time to pull my leg. What you're saying is quite intense and serious."His face sobers upon hearing that. Placing his hands squarely on the table, he focuses his gaze on my eyes."I'm not kidding. I want to marry you." Then he presses his lips in a straight line, biting at the tip of it. "Would you like to marry me?""We have just met like a few minutes ago. I-I haven't even spent enough time with you to decide what kind of a person you are." Then I fold my arms over my chest. "We haven't even slept together." Shaking my head, I scoff. "How can you even ask me to marry you?"Pulling at his shirt's sleeves, he lets his gaze wander on my body."Let's sleep together then. I'm a pretty busy man. I don't have the time to go on a hundred dates." He sexily runs a hand through his hair. "And it's not like my answer to wanting to marry you will change after a hundred dates." He straightens his back to take a better look at me. "I like you, and the way you were checking me out earlier, I can say you feel the same. And let me tell you, I'm capable, wealthy, handsome, and well-established. Then why shouldn't we get married?"I'm unexpectedly out of words since he's making valid points. I lick my lips, not knowing what to say. I exhale as I come up with something that makes sense at the moment."Let's sleep together first. If it's a good experience, then I'll marry you."Would marrying him on a whim even make any sense? But what do I have left to lose anymore? He smiles optimistically, holding out his hand. I take it, and we both shake on it. After a moment, we break contact."You can bet it's going to be a good experience."I exhale, watching his lips move, wondering what it will do to me in a few hours."Shouldn't we eat first?""It's on you, whatever you decide."What would Leslie do in this situation?Mustering all the courage I have within me, I make up my mind."I'll follow you then to a private room."He rises from his seat, and so do I as I follow him to the front desk area in the lobby.DAWN"Oh, did you see the new CEO? He's so goddamn hot." Julie, my colleague who sits at the desk next to mine, tries to get my attention while I stare lazily at my computer screen. "You should see him, Dawn. Your jaw will literally hit the floor.""So, that's the new guy, right?" I ask without looking up. "The new head in the management? Why did they change the old CEO? He was kind of nice. Disagreeable, but nice.""Well, the old head in management got caught redhanded embezzling millions from the company, but he did it quite smartly over the period of five years, so the chairman of the Waugh Industries decided to move him to a different sister company." She bares her teeth as she smiles. "It was a quick move to keep matters hush and utilize his talents for free till he pays back the company every cent he owes." Julie shakes her head, rubbing the tip of her nose. "I've also heard that it was an inside settlement, and he agreed, so he doesn't go to jail.""I can't believe it." I lick
DAWN"Well, what was that about?" Julie paces around the room and then steps next to me, setting the two cups on the table. "He looks like he knew you or something. He stood right there in the middle of the office and watched you for like a minute, I swear." She points at the space between the desks and the door. "Do you know him from somewhere, Dawn?"Pulling the mug by the cup handle gingerly towards me, I shake my head."I don't think so." Then I present my opposition to the idea with more zeal. "Of course not! What business do I have to rub elbows with the firm's CEO? I got to be crazy or something in the head for even entertaining the idea.""Geez. Calm down." Julie rolls her eyes. "I was just asking, Dawny. You don't have to take everything I say to heart.""Oh, okay, fine," I add in a dismissive tone, and Julie takes the hint. "I got to concentrate on work. Fiona needs these graphics in like an hour or two."In the back of my mind, I turn the idea of Kyle knowing me from somewh
DAWNI punch the send 'button' on my email, and it sends the folder with the newly designed graphics to the team lead, Fiona's business email. She needs the folder for the afternoon meeting. Just processing the thought of showing up to the business meeting in the back of my mind, knowing that Kyle will be there, sends shivers down my spine. Why did he have to work for my company?Well, scratch that. Why did I have to work for his firm? Why couldn't I have found a better job elsewhere? And why does my new husband also have to be my new boss?As I'm busy formulating these thoughts in my head, Fiona knocks on my door, putting her steely gaze on me. My eyes snap from my computer's screen to meet hers."What's going on, Dawn?" She clears her throat. "Didn't I ask you to go and see the new CEO soon?" Then she shakes her head, looking down at me as she crosses her arms across her chest. "What are you going to do about your bad memory? I had reminded you to see the new CEO in his office for a
DAWNDriving home in my car, I have thoughts spinning in my mind. Was marrying Kyle such a great idea? What kind of husband would he be to me?Have I made some mistake marrying a stranger without knowing much about him?Taking the next U-turn as I pull the car up a deserted lane that connects to the highway, I sigh. Kyle had sent me messages after the meeting to invite me. He wants me to come to see him at his home tonight. Moreover, Kyle's words give me a feeling about him wanting to get to know each other better since, in his messages, he asserted that I should stay the night and give this marriage a shot. And like a fool, I replied to his messages while I saved his home address when he sent it to me and looked it up on the online navigation maps. Then I sulked for another hour at my desk before leaving for the night. Now, I'm taking the highway which leads to the house on the outskirts of our city.Maybe I should follow his lead. And give this thing a try.Even if it irks me that h
DAWN“And I’m sorry.”His words grip me with surprise a third time this evening.“What are you sorry for exactly?” With my harsh words, I put my eyes on the floor because I don’t know how to face him. “I just want to know why you are apologising to me.”“Let’s just say that my harsh attitude and how I go about things have been far from appropriate.” He gazes at me with fierceness in his eyes. “I don’t want you to think I don’t care about you or you aren’t important to me. It’s just that things happen at work, and I can barely control everything.”“I can understand that.”He glances at me expectantly.“Can you?”I bob my head a few times, weighing his words in the back of my mind.In a way, I do understand how he feels. And where he's coming from in this situation since he’s also the head of an organisation? There are so many things at play here.He must be troubled about his private life making the rounds in the company. The legitimate fear of his employees spending their free time te
DAWNAfter the quick but enjoyable hot shower, I put on the pyjamas and tread downstairs to the kitchen. I follow Kyle's cooking noises and the noise of him putting a pan over the fire. The moment I step into the kitchen, I see Kyle perched over an electric stove, stirring some sauce in a big pot.Is he a great cook?Have I randomly lucked into a husband that can cook dinners?Even though I lied and made my intentions for helping him out in the kitchen known, I think I have left out some crucial information from the conversation. The fact is I'm not a great cook.I can barely cook anything more than heating eggs and making the random batch of instant noodles that I can find lying in the back of my cupboard."It smells good.""Does it?" Kyle looks up from the simmering pot in front of him. "I just added some cilantro and thyme to the sauce. I settled on making shrimp pasta." Then he brings the sauce ladle to his lips. "Hmm. . .I think the sauce tastes good.""The dish sounds like a nic
DAWN"How are you finding the pasta?" Kyle pushes the plate of side dishes towards me. I didn't know when he found the time to pickle some fresh vegetables, but he did find time to do that. "Would you like some more of the salad? We have more than enough," he passes me the salad bowl and the pesto dish, "so please help yourself."I wrap another string of pasta around my fork and bring it to my mouth. "It tastes delicious. You were not lying about your cooking skills." My comment earns a scoff that slips easily from Kyle's lips. His reaction makes me chuckle. "And to be honest, I'm eating so well tonight. Usually, I'll munch on any leftovers from the lunch I'll hurriedly cook for myself in the mornings or the night before, and I rarely make salads that look like this." I point to the salad bowl. "My salads are rarely this green or appetising." In my head, the word 'impostor' twinkles in bright neon lights as if it's a beer sign since I'm not talking about the absence of my cooking skil
DAWNI lie there nervously in Kyle's bed with my arms around my head, waiting in anticipation of what's about to happen. I know what he said. But is everything going to be okay between us if we sleep in the same bed? Will we be able to control ourselves? Will he be able to keep his hands off of me?Will I be the person who makes the first move? The question hounds me as I twist and turn under the soft duvet to make myself more comfortable. My nerves flare, and I wonder what spending the night in Kyle's room will be like since I haven't spent a night in a man's bed before. Sleep is still a far-fetched dream since my body feels as if it's on fire with want and expectation.I should have slept in the guest room to avoid feeling like a desperate moron.Tossing again under the duvet to adjust my body to a more comfortable position, I hear footsteps coming towards the room. I abruptly close my eyes to fake falling asleep. Kyle shouldn't know that I haven't had a wink of shuteye since I step
KYLECrossing my hands across my chest, I wait for Neil to bring the car in front of the official building establishment. I am wondering when he's going to get around to pulling the car in front of me. Running a hand across my temple, I massage the sides of my head to massage the nerves throbbing in the right part of my skull.Knowing that I have to deal with my dad tonight is getting on my nerves, and I don't know what to do with it. I have to inform Neil that he's coming with me tonight. I don't know if he'll agree to accompany me.As I'm lost in my thoughts, I see a car pulling in front of the company's parking area and then making its way towards me as I pull on my shirt's wrist. There's a nip in the air, and I somehow feel the cold settling within my skin. I have a lot on my mind, but I also know that I have to just get through tonight. What will my dad think about Dawn? How will he react to this marriage that he doesn't even know about? It's not that I didn't want to tell him, b
DAWN My phone buzzes in my pocket and my hand mindlessly reaches for it. I watch Julie talk to one of our planning team coworkers and she laughs loudly while she playfully nudges the guy on his chest with the back of her hand. She's awfully flirtatious with him today. Is he set out to be her next crush? Julie exchanges a look with me when she sees me staring at them with a confused face. Her eyes offer me a blank look as they tell me to get off her case, so I shake my head and focus on the phone in my hands and the screen gleams before dying down. It looks like I have received texts from someone. When I tap on the power button again, my glowing screen tells me that I have received some texts from Kyle. An instant smile breaks out on my face as I take a step away from our colleagues to read his text in the corner of their office room. Tapping on the messenger chat, my eyes grow wide and my lips part. The smile fades off my features and its place, I reckon fear takes its place. H
KYLE As I flip through the meeting notes Ms Burton left on my table some time ago, a message buzzes on my phone screen. When I pick up the phone to glance at it, I rub my index finger and thumb across the bridge of my nose. What does he want from me? Sighing, I pick up my phone and slide my thumb on the screen, stretching the sides of my neck. Oh, god. Was I supposed to meet him today? Tapping my finger reluctantly on the chat box to access his text, I make a face blow out a series of short breaths when his message pops up on the screen.
DAWNAfter our late afternoon lunch, Julie and I walk in tow to get back to our office room. Fiona has been coming in and going out of our office all this morning as she pleases, trying her best to intimidate us and breathing down our backs. She wants updates about every tiny thing with our new marketing materials, and Julie and I have been whispering about how insufferable she has been about this whole thing. After another discreet meeting with Mr Waugh, about whose details we got to know more from Sophia, yes, she's the person who was talking about my back, told us that Fiona was red-faced walking out of Kyle's office. Fiona's nostrils flared when Sophia tried to ask and more like inquire why Fiona needed a second and clearly a more private meeting with our CEO.Now, Sophia thinks Fiona is the person who is trying to lure Kyle into h
KYLEChewing on my lower lip, I read the email on my computer screen with a raised eyebrow. Fiona has sent mass emails to all the heads of departments, and I have been forwarded that email by Neil. Her email reads like this.Dear Respected Teammates and Colleagues,I think the CEO is trying to make an example of me since I stood up to him, and I need to do better to stay at this company. Can you support me in this process since you were a part of the negotiation he started for me to get a demotion in front of the respected members of this reputed company at the conference meeting earlier?I will cherish your support forever!
DAWN"Good, you're back," Julie declares her words to me as I step into the office room. "You were not kidding when you said you'll be gone for a bit.""I wasn't." I give her a small smile, getting into my desk chair as I suck in a deep breath and release it. "There were things I needed to take care of, so I took care of them." Shrugging my shoulders, I exchange glances with her. "That's it.""Sounds good, Dawn." Julie picks up a stack of files and passes them over to me. "I forgot to give them to you earlier. When Fiona came in to check on you, she brought them with her, and she wanted you to go through all of them by the end of the workday." Stretching her limbs above her head, she yawns. "I have to help you out in sorting the data out too. It's our team lead's orders."
DAWNAs I walk towards the stairway, my stomach flips upside down. A warm need makes itself known as last night's images flash in front of my eyes.I can't stop thinking about him moving between my legs, can I?Just asking myself that question makes my face flush and my eyes warm.I'm glad Kyle is not here.If Kyle was here, I know he would notice I'm blushing.I wonder if he could see right through me.It's not that hard to read me, either. Is it?My pussy walls flutter as my heart throbs against its walls. Why am I feeling like this? It's just Kyle.God, I need to stop feeling this way around him all the time when he's with me.But why do I need him so much?I have no answer to this question either. As I take quick steps towards the stairwell, I finally come face to face with the slightly cracked open door in front of it on my office floor. Opening it slowly further, I peer inside. No one seems to be in the
DAWNWhen I return to the office room, I sit down on my work chair with a plop, exhaling a harsh breath.I have just gotten to work, but it already seems like a long day has passed.Julie looks at me curiously when I turn my desktop computer on, wanting to get a headstart on work, open the attached files on our work messenger and log into my email on my screen. But when I don't say anything for a minute, she bows her head down and focuses on her work."What's going on now, Julie?" I ask her without looking up. "Is there something you want to tell me or ask me?""Not really." Julie shakes her head. "No, unless you want to tell me what happened with Fiona." She wets her lower lip. "Did you run into her or something?""Yeah." Jutting out my lower lip, I nod. "Well, she came into the women's washroom to confront me. Thanks for looking out for me even though you find me cold, rude, and indifferent to your hardships. I got there just in time because of you. A
DAWN"Dawn," the person says in a stern voice. "Are you in there?" The person talks much more loudly this time. "Are you okay in there? It's me, Fiona." Then she pauses. "You can come out right now. I need to talk to you."When I don't say anything, she proceeds to talk into the silence as I sense my tolerance for her behaviour evaporating into thin air when she addresses me again."Dawn. I know you're in there. It's all right. You can come out." She pauses. "You're sick, so I don't want to stretch this longer than it has to be here." When I don't respond in any way to her words, she starts talking again. "Oh, please, for the love of God, you can come out now. I won't bite you." Another pause. "Scratch that. I am worried about you since you are my teammate."My heart beats loudly against my chest. What does she want to talk to me about? Is she for real?Is she acting sympathetic towards me after all this time that has passed where she has done noth
