“Run Lily, run!”
The voice called from the distance. Lily stood by the side of the beach, twirling and turning, searching and seeking the direction of the voice. “I can’t see you!” Lily called out. The voice was oddly familiar, but Lily struggled to recall whose voice it was just as she struggled with finding the owner of the voice. “Run! Lily please, run!” The voice called out again, more urgently this time around. Lily looked around frantically, her breathing growing faster and faster. She looked at the large body of water and the waves slapping against the tides. Lily stared in horror. “Take Joe and run as fast as you can!” The voice urged, pulling at Lily. Then it dawned on Lily; it was the voice of her mother. She would never have figured out the voice if she hadn’t mentioned Lily’s brother. “Mummy!” Lily said and ran towards the water. She was certain now that her mother’s voice was calling her from the heavy tidal waves. “Don’t come any closer!” Her mother’s voice became stern and stoic. “I told you to take Joe and run! It is dangerous out here,” she said. But Lily did not listen as she continued to walk towards the water. She did not understand why her mother was playing hide and seek with her. That was a game only she and Joe played when they were bored. “Can you come out already?” Lily asked. The waves continued to slap against the tide and in the distant, Lily could see the waves overturning; and it called unto her, dangerously. Or maybe it was her mother that was calling unto her from deep into the water, she could not tell. Her parents always went diving sometimes. It was not an ocean as big as this one, Lily was sure, but it was an ocean all the same. She had always wanted to join them, but her mother had always vehemently disagreed. So maybe today was Lily’s lucky day. “Get back!” Her other yelled at Lily at the top of her voice. “No,” Lily countered. “Not until I see you and dad,” Lilly said. “Take Joe and run, otherwise the waves will swallow you up!” Her mother’s voice began to plead urgently this time around. Lily turned around and looked around the large expanse of the sandy beach, and it was deserted and eerily quiet, except for the occasional sounds the waves made. Lily remembered being here earlier today when Christopher had practically kicked her out of their hotel room, and she also remembered seeing a couple of beach lovers in bikini’s and shorts. She could not understand why it was so lonely and empty, and dark. Didn’t she leave the beach almost immediately after she came? Yes, she definitely did; when those ladies had accosted her. Hadn’t she had dinner in the balony of their suite and turned in for the night? Why was she here again? Lily realized now that she hated the beach. She hated pools and ponds and any body or gathering of water, so why did she come back to the beach when everyone had deserted it. “Take Joe and get away from here!” Her mother’s calling voice jolted Lily back from her train of thoughts. Oh yeah, she was back because of her mum, but as Lily looked around the beach for the second time squinting her eyes to grasp everything her eyes could catch in the illuminating darkness, she did not find Joe. “He is not here, mum,” Lily turned back to the flapping tidal waves and informed her mum. “Did dad take him diving today? I have always known he would take Joe first before me,” Lily whined. “You are not listening, Lily! It is very dangerous to be out here. Take to your heels now!” Her mother urged, but something stronger was calling unto Lily. It was the tidal waves. Lily took further steps towards the ocean. Her feet stepped on the wet sand, and she waited for the water to come to her again. “No, mum,” Lily found herself disobeying her mother. “You have always been stubborn and belligerent, and your stubbornness have caused us our deaths. Now we are living in pain and agony as a result of it,” Lily’s mother said bitterly. Then it came to Lily; the fatal accident, and she began to cry profusely. “It was an accident!” Lily yelled and her voice echoed deep into the night. “I miss you both!” Lily cried. “You cannot miss us, we are gone forever…” her mother’s voice faded away. Lily reached out, as though she could grab it, but it was like the wind, and it was gone. She cried and cried, allowing her tears to fall to the ground and mingle with the ocean. As Lily opened her eyes, she saw her father’s battered body, drenched in blood, gasping for life. Lily screamed and wanted to run back, but it was too late for her now. If only she had listened to her mother and ran. The waves came rushing like a fiery wind and before Lily could take some steps backwards, it engulfed her and dragged her into the ocean. Lily had never been a good swimmer, because she never had the opportunity to learn, but she flapped her hands and legs, struggling to stay afloat. “You can’t survive. You won’t survive it this time,” a dreadful voice whispered into Lily’s ears in the depth of the ocean. “No, I have to survive. Joe needs me. I am all he has!” Lily begged, but water and more water rushed into her mouth, making their way to her lungs. Lily struggled and struggled, but the waves pulled stronger. They were stronger and firmer than anything Lily had ever known. “Let me live for Joe! I owe it to my parents to protect him!” Lily cried as she swallowed more water and struggled to stay afloat. Then suddenly, she felt two firm hands grab her, shaking her with fervency. Lily could not decipher whether it was the waves or a human hand, and visions of the gory sight of her father’s battered body in the accident flashed through her mind in quick successions. “Ashley, wake up!” Lily jolted awake like lightening as Christopher stared at her, a look of confusion on his face.Christopher Bridger sat in the balcony and worked on his iPad. If his members of staff could see him now, they would be bewildered; why the heck was he working on his honeymoon?!But this was far from a honeymoon to Christopher. He knew what this marriage was all about and what was expected of him and now that they were not really in the eyes of the public, there was no need pretending to be a couple in love.Christopher wasn’t married for up to three days and he could not wait for the one-year marriage contract to be over so that he could go back to his life and space, but then again, Christopher’s mind wasn’t even fully concentrated on work; his mind was elsewhere. On his wife, Ashley Grander.“What is going on?” Christopher asked himself. It was early morning the next day and he just wanted to spend this time alone, so he had called the hotel service staff assigned to them for the period of their stay to take Ashley out on a tour. In truth, Christopher could not stand Ashley, and h
Lily stood there, shocked and staring at Christopher like a statute. She hadn’t expected to be accosted by him, because with the way he stood, his hands in his pocket and stared at her with a stern look on his face.“Did you hear what I just said?” Christopher asked.Lily blinked and swallowed. She knew that Christopher was not an idiot, and she had not been impersonating Ashley properly. Half of the time, Lily was freaked out of her mind, and she was barely managing to pull by, because everything was nothing like what Lily was accustomed to.“If you fail, your brother will be killed.” The voice of Don Grander rang in Lily’s head again and she knew that she could not afford to fail. Joe’s hearty smiles, and cheerful laughter, and his impeccable skills in the baseball pitch flashed through Lily’s mind and she became weak.Lily already felt horrible about the death of her parents; an episode that would continue to haunt her all the days of her life, and she could not bear to have Joe’s
Aimee Landon walked into the tall building, her high pair of nude heels clicking against the magnolia floor. Her face wasn’t friendly for a fresh day’s start and that was primarily because she had had a rough night.“Good morning, Ms. Aimee,” the secretary greeted cheerily as she came out of the elevator and proceeded to her office.“Thank you,” Aimee said, straight-faced, and walked past her without bothering to be friendly for a bit. Her foul mood was very obvious, but Aimee did not care. She got into her office and shut the door.Barely two minutes into settling in, Aimee received an email stating that the rest of the board members had a meeting in less than thirty minutes; actually, it was reminder email, but Aimee hadn’t prepared for any meeting, and it was totally unlike her.Something was eating Aimee Landon up and it had something to do with Christopher Bridger honeymooning away in Miami.“I can definitely skip this one,” Aimee said disgustingly. Other days, she would be willi
After the confrontation which Lily felt she handled just fine, because Christopher stopped looking at her like a stranger, Lily went into the bathroom and stayed there for an unhealthy amount of time. The good thing was that Christopher would not be bothering her.Actually, he was not bothering her for one of the things Lily had been worried and nervous about; intimacy.“But how on earth am I supposed to keep up with this impersonation and not get caught?” Lily asked herself in exasperation. She turned on the shower so that the sound of the rushing water would be a distracting noise.“I am supposed to be doing my job at the Top Taste Wine shop, not out here in a luxurious hotel in Miami, impersonating a dead man’s wife,” Lily said as tears brimmed her eyes. Each time she had to act or pretend to be Ashley Grander, Lily felt herself slipping away and she hated it, because Ashley held too any unpleasant secrets that Lily doubted she would be able to hide away for long.Lily heard her ph
Lily knew that she had to do something. When she accepted to impersonate Ashley Grander, she had no idea that Ashley had so many secrets lying with her; secrets that Lily wondered if her parents knew about or not.Hedge had threatened to send the explicit videos to Christopher if she did not call off her honeymoon to go and see him. This was a tricky situation, and Lily knew that she would have to deal tactically with it.“Lily, you can do this. You have been faced with difficult challenges, and you have overcome them,” Lily gave herself the pep talk. “You have got this. You know you are doing this for Joe.”Lily swallowed hard, rolled her shoulders and stepped out of the bathroom. Then she froze.Christopher Bridger stood, backing her, and shirtless. She had never seen him in anything other than his pair of suits. Even since they arrived in Miami for their honeymoon, he had been fully and formerly dressed…well, except at nights. Christopher’s back was wide and very muscular, down to
In less than an hour, Lily and Christopher were already flying out of Miami. “Did you enjoy your seat?” Matilda tried to be friendly when they entered the plane.Lily intended to be friendly to her, but from the corner of her eyes, she noticed Christopher was watching her, and he was boiling with anger, and for the life of her, she could not understand why he was so upset. This wasn’t a proper honeymoon, and Christopher did not even step out of the hotel the entire time, and Lily could not fathom why that was so. So Lily only nodded slightly, and when Matilda realized that Lily wouldn’t be paying her any mind, she left feeling embarrassed. Lily was sincerely sorry to have treated a harmless and friendly person, but there was nothing else that she could do. Lily decided to forget about her and concentrate on what Christopher had told her.“Be prepared to feed the media and paparazzi…”Lily was already exhausted from living Ashley’s life, and now she wondered what she was supposed to
Emily Torres looked at Lily with disdain and shook her head, “I told Grander that you were too chicken for this,” She complained. “Has Christopher found out your real identity?” She asked. There was a flicker of fear and dread in her eyes even though she tried to hide it.Lily looked at her and the first thing that came to her mind was to do tell Emily exactly how she felt. She could not understand how they could only be interested in getting money and taking Christopher’s wealth when they had just lost their only child. Lily knew that the only reason Emily had some sort of fear and dread in her eyes was because she was afraid to lose the money.“I sent you some money,” Lily said with thinned lips. She was equally trying to contain her anger. Lily knew that these people now controlled her entire existence, so she would be careful what she said or did.“As you should,” Emily said. Then she lowered her voice and said, “You know this is strictly between us, right? I am capable of making
By the time Lily left the Grander’s mansion, she had tears streaming down her cheeks. Ever since this whole thing started, she had been trying to be strong, all for Joe, but each day, she was being dragged deeper and deeper into Ashley’s messy lifestyle.Going to Emily had been a huge mistake.Somehow, Lily felt that she would have gotten a different response and approach to things if she had met with Don Grander. Only a few days and she already knew that Emily Torres was a woman who cared for herself alone and no one else. She was not concerned that Ashley was actually dead. It did not move her to hear that Lily was being threatened and blackmailed; the only thing that mattered to her was Lily playing by the books. She was the greediest woman Lily had ever met.Lily allowed the tears to fall freely as she drove to her doom, because going to see Hedge when she already knew what he wanted was heading straight to hell. First of all, Lily was a virgin, so how was she supposed to just giv
Christopher arrived at the company from the hotel in a grand style. He was looking dashing and stunning, and more, he was impressed with what Aimee had come up with in the crunch of time. His company was buzzing with elegance and class, and with everything that had been scheduled to happen tonight, Christopher had no doubt that it would be a successful night for him. The papers he would use in sealing the best deal the company had ever had was with him. However, Christopher was troubled. In all honesty, he had a pretty rough night last time, because while at the hotel room, he kept battling his conscience.“I should have gone home to her,” Christopher told himself.Lately, especially after their intimate affair, he had been unable to get her off his mind, and last night, he regretted allowing Aimee persuade him into sleeping in a hotel home. Christopher had also battled with anxiety and nervousness, and he knew that if he simply wrapped his arms around her, he would have felt better.
Lily stayed in the bedroom and waited for Christopher, but she was downright scared to her bones that something might go wrong and nervous. It was as though the time was ticking by too slowly, but she had no choice but to wait for him in his mansion. However, she was very restless.Lily thought of Don Grander who she guessed must have realized that his papers were missing and would be searching frantically for them. He would kill Lily if he knew that she had taken it, and worse, wanted to show them to Christopher. In thinking of the devil, Don Grander began to call Ashley’s phone, and she jumped in fright.Lily contemplated on not answering the call, but then if she did that, Don Grander might suspect her, because she had never ignored his call before, so Lily took a split second to catch her breath before picking the call. She would have to act normal otherwise Don Grander would know that something was amiss.“Where are you?” Don Grander asked gruffly as soon as the call connected.“
“Monk!” Don Grander yelled at the top of his voice, almost tearing out his lungs. He was in his bedroom, and he paced furiously. Some minutes later, Monk rushed into his room.“Boss, you sent for me,” Monk said, confused, because he was just with Don Grander about an hour ago in the study where they talked at length.“Something has happened,” Don Grander said through clenched teeth.“What might that be?” Monk asked.“Before you and I went out, I was going through the original and fake document that I and Bridger signed before his demise, and the one that Benedict drafted for me which he showed to Christopher to make him believe and succumb to what we want,” Don Grander explained.“Okay…” Monk said, paying rapt attention to what Don Grander was saying even though he was wondering why Don Grander decided to go through the papers in the first place. It was as though Don Grander could read Monk’s thoughts, because he answered right away. “You know that this last deal is very huge; it is t
Aimee threw herself into planning this special event for Christopher and his company. He did not give her the full details, but she worked with what she had anyway. She had been busy contacting vendors and planners, making plans and readjustments; Aimee wanted complete perfection, because this was the event that she was banking on completely. She was fed up of waiting for Christopher to come by, and even though he had reinstated her with even better promotion, Aimee feared that Christopher had fallen for Ashley, and she could not let that happen. After this event, she would have exactly what was hers!Aimee was still in deep thoughts when her phone rang. When she checked the caller ID, it was the new man that she had hired to do her dirty business. The moment Aimee realized that Derek was no longer on board, she had had to find someone else. This time around, Aimee ensured that she went for someone who was fierce and dangerous.“What news do you have for me?” Aimee asked. Now that she
Lily covered her mouth in shock and dreadful fright as her heart slammed against her ribs. At first, she thought that Don Grander was going to hear her gasp, and she feared for her life. If she was caught hiding by the stairs and eavesdropping, she would be dead even before the actual time, but thankfully, Don Grander and Monk were too engrossed in the whole conversation to even hear her.“I just want this to be over and done with so that Emily and I can finally go for that vacation. We have already missed our flight and she is breathing down my neck…it can be really frustrating,” Don Grander said to Monk. Then the two men stopped right close to Lily, making Lily more afraid. She needed to get away from this mansion before they either discovered that she was here, or that the papers were missing. As far as Lily knew, no one saw her come in except the security at the gate, and hopefully, she would be able to get out before Don Grander declares that anything is missing.“When she steals
“What?!” Lily was stunned and afraid and alert. Her mind instantly went to Monk and Don Grander’s threats that they would kill Joe if she failed on any of her tasks.“Yeah, and it was pretty weird. It made me feel uncomfortable,” Joe said over the phone. She could feel the discomfort in his voice, and Lily’s heart broke into more pieces. She even began to wonder how much heartache she could take at once.“I really wish you were here, Lily; I feel safe with you around,” Joe said warmly and sadly. “It has been over a year, and this is beginning to look creepy to me. Even Rudney does not exactly know where you are,” Joe admitted.Lily did not think that Joe would think too deeply about everything. She hadn’t even really been thinking about Joe and how her absence might have affected him. More tears dropped from Lily’s eyes in pain and regret. If only she could tell Joe exactly what was going on, but then again, she did not even have the liberty of brooding about that for so long, because
Lily felt like she had been hit with a ton of bricks at the harshness and cruelty of Christopher’s words, and when she managed to look into his eyes, she could see all the emotions right there.“Let me say what I came here to tell you, please,” Lily begged deeply.“How did you manage to bleed like a virgin when everyone knows that you are not, huh?” Christopher asked bitterly and angrily.Lily opened her mouth to say that it was because she was a virgin, but no words came out of her mouth, and Christopher mistook Lily’s inability to say the words as guiltiness.Christopher shook his head. “You are my worst mistake, Ashley, and I blame myself for not fighting this arrangement when I was told. After this party, you are going to return to your father’s house discreetly until this whole crap of a marriage is over; I never want to see your face again,” Christopher said firmly.Lily squeezed her eyes shut as the words sliced through her heart. She felt like Christopher had literally taken a
Lily could not wrap her head around everything that the old maid had revealed to her.Ashley Grander was alive, and no one knew!A tiny part of Lily was relieved that she was, because after all she had found out about her, it just didn’t sound fair that she would have been murdered. Indeed, she played her game well. Another tiny part of Lily wanted to see Ashley, the only girl in the world that looked almost like her, but according to what the old maid said, Ashley was in a far away country where no one knew her and with a new identity. She was living with the old maid’s distant relative, and to ensure that she is completely safe, she and the old maid had had to keep off communicating.Ashley Grander was smarter than anyone Lily had ever met.Thinking away from her now, Lily thought about herself. As much as she was relieved that Ashley wasn’t truly dead after all the evil that surrounded her, she had been the unfortunate person forced into living her life, doing her job, and cleaning
“What?” Lily was stupefied. She could not believe that she had been played so well, but then again, a lot of questions were already running through her mind. Now, nothing seemed clear and she needed it to be, so she sat back down again.“You knew from the beginning that I wasn’t Ashley,” Lily stated. It was a statement that required an answered, a clarity of some sort.“Even if Ashley was truly dead, I would have known,” the old maid responded. “I raised her, you know,” she started as tears gathered in her eyes. “When her mother mysteriously and tragically passed, she was left in my care, and I loved and nurtured Ashley like she was my child. Do you know how heartbreaking it was for me to see her being constantly maltreated and punished?” The old maid asked.Lily could feel the raw pain in her heart as she spoke, and she shuddered at it.She would never be able to grasp the life of the wealthy and powerful. The more she thought she knew, the deeper the whole thing went. When she worke
