Jessica sat by her family’s poolside, watching the beautiful sunset dip down into the horizon far away from her. The orange glow of its fading light moved on the surface of the water. Her mother, Janet, joined her over at the poolside, a cup of warm tea in her hands. There was a moment of silence between them as both women took in the jaw dropping view in front of them.
“You haven’t spoken to him about the baby, have you?” “C’mon mum. You’ve ruined the moment.” Jess sighed, taking off her sun shades to look at her mum with a sad look on her face. “I saw no use in telling him because he had made it clear to me where I stand in his life. There is really no need dragging him back into my life and that of my unborn child.” She finished, picking up her mum’s cup of tea and taking a sip as revenge for ruining the mood. “But you know he has a right to know, Jess. He is the father of the child.” Janet insisted, placing her hand on her daughter’s chin and turning her face to hers. “That still doesn’t change anything if you ask me mum. Telling him would only complicate things even more and I’m not ready for that. Olivia has him wrapped in her spell so I’d be doing myself good by moving on also. He doesn’t deserve to know of this child’s existence.” Jessica replied, her voice becoming firm as she spoke. “But Jess, do you really think you’ll be able to do that forever? He’ll find out one way or another.” Her mother frowned, letting her motherly instincts kick in. “Maybe, but then none of it would matter anymore. I’ll be away from here and our lives would be far different from what it is now.” Jessica mumbled, going closer to pool and dipping her feet in while she sat on the ground above. “I know what carrying a burden can be like, that’s why I don’t want that experience for you. This right here is a lot to bear.” Janet spoke, watching her daughter remain relaxed over the matter. Jessica bit her bottom lip knowing she could have only gotten this stubbornness from her mum, Janet. Unknown to Janet, Jessica had also been thinking about this but the fear of Ethan’s reaction to the news was stopping her from taking any action. The thought of him turning her down one more time was too much for her to bear especially now that she needed to be careful with her pregnancy after waiting years for it. “I’ll be fine, mum. I promise.” Jessica guaranteed, splashing water with her feet in the pool. Before Janet could say one more thing, her husband, Joseph appeared in the patio area, his mobile device in his hand. He seemed more relaxed than both ladies but Jessica could smell that something was up by looking at him. “Jess, I just ended a call with my lawyers a few minutes ago. Your divorce will be finalized in a few weeks, Ethan sent over the papers faster than we anticipated.” He announced before joining them by the poolside, also taking a sip of his wife’s tea. “Good. That’s just the news I wanted to hear.” Jessica nodded happily with a big smile on her face. “Are you sure, baby girl? You really don’t have to rush into anything.” Joseph replied, studying his daughter’s body language as she spoke. “I’m not rushing at all, dad. I’ve played this scenario in my head over and over again and this is the best decision that I can make for myself and my child.” Jessica replied confidently. “That’s what she keeps saying. And can both of you go get your own tea and leave mine alone.” Janet joked, trying to lighten the moment. “Yes, love.” Her husband said before taking the cup of tea and leaving to go join Jessica in the pool. “What of the baby? What’s your plan?” Joseph asked, shoving Jessica gently with his shoulders. “I’ll keep the baby but I wouldn’t let Ethan know about it for now.” Jessica looked at both parents as she answered. “Jess, it might not be fair to the child. Ethan might be a douchebag but he is still the father of the child.” Joseph frowned at his daughter, trying his best to convince her otherwise. “I know, dad. But he didn’t care about me when we were together and I’m worried the same may happen to my child.” Jessica answered softly, her heart breaking as she said those words. “Alright, love. We are not here to influence your decision so whatever you chose, we will stand by you no matter what.” Joseph assured her, gesturing his wife to come join them with his hand. “We are always here for you, no matter what you’ll need.” Janet finally spoke after being quiet for a while, making her way to join her family in the pool. As the sun fully disappeared into the hills, their conversations moved to lighter topics. Joseph made jokes about the golf game that he had earlier on with the boys and Jessica finally managed to let out a genuine laugh. Though she was still worried about this decision she was making, she wasn’t going to let it ruin her happiness. * * “There’s a place in Italy that I have been planning on acquiring. It is quiet and it’s secluded from the rest of the world and perfect for peace.” Jessica announced to her parents as they all sat at the table for breakfast the next morning. “Sounds and looks like just what you’d need in this phase of your life. A fresh start away from every and any drama.” Her father said, taking her tablet and going through the images she had to show him. “Exactly. I’ll have the time to focus on the baby without being distracted.” Jessica agreed, munching on her French toast. “That sounds perfect. When do you leave?” Janet added, finally finishing up in the kitchen with the servants before joining them. “As soon as possible, I believe.” Jessica answered, smiling at the thought of having a fresh start at life. While Jessica spoke to her parents about her departure to Italy, she suddenly heard her notification tone go off and her phone buzz on the table. She picked it up and stared at the screen that showed a message from Ethan. We need to talk Her skipped a beat as she read these words. She had hoped that after the papers were signed, they would both go their separate ways. But now, with those four words on her screen she knew that Ethan wasn’t getting the memo. “Jess, is everything okay?” her father asked after noticing that she had been silent for a while.Jessica sat in her bed room, staring at her suitcase which was packed only half way. Italy was going to be her escape, the fresh start she needed, far away from every chaos that came with her life in Los Angeles. But the battle for divorce, Ethan’s cheating, and the secret that was growing within her made things feel even more heavier for her.She placed her right on her belly, feeling the slightest flutter under her fingers. A bittersweet smile formed on her face as this happened. In a few months, she was going to be the mother of a child and the child would automatically become a part of Ethan’s life forever even though it would know him. “Jess, are you ready? Your father and the Thomas are waiting in the car.” Janet called out to her from the hallway.“Yeah, I’ll be there with in a few minutes.” Jessica replied, taking in a deep breath before pushing all those disturbing thoughts aside. They were headed to one last meeting with the lawyers to finalize everything about the divo
Jessica had been dreading the moment where she would have to meet up with Ethan again. She had stayed up all night wondering what he could probably want at a time like this, when the only thing they needed to finalize their divorce was his signature. It was obvious that they was no form of love between them, so why pretend when the truth was known. Yet here she was, sitting at a café that they man who had just destroyed her life had chosen. Her parents had tried their best to convince her that they was no need in going to see him, but nothing worked.“What’s the point of this meeting? He is a grown man who has made his choice to be with that woman so let him be, Jess.” He had said when she announced to them that she would be going over to meet with Ethan.“I know, dad. But deep down I just want to hear him out and leave Los Angeles knowing there’s nothing holding me back here.” Jessica had answered, trying to ensure that her emotions were in check. Her mother had not even tried to joi
Jessica sat in her family’s spacious living room, one of the many that they owned in their family estate. She was lost in thought, absentmindedly drawing out the outline of her tea cup while she sat. She had returned from the café a few hours ago, but her mind was still replaying all the events that had happened in there. It had gone worse than she had prepared for mentally and emotionally. Her parents both walked into the room, returning from an errand they had to run. They watched as their daughter sat unaware that they had walked into the room as she held her tea cup tightly. Janet, her mother. quickly took a seat which was opposite to where Jessica sat while Joseph chose his comfy armchair, watching their daughter entirely before she recognized their presence.“Earth to Jessica!”“We’ve been watching you for a few minutes and you didn’t realize that we had come into the room.” Janet finally spoke, breaking the silence and making Jessica conscious of her surroundings. Jessica sigh
The Johnson family began to arrive at the Mitchell mansion and were welcomed by y2yttthe golden hue of the sun as it began to set on the building in front of them. Jessica, sitting with both hands crossed at the back of her father’s G-wagon, could feel the ominous sensation in the air as they arrived. She wished she could be as calm and poised as her parents were while their feet echoed on the marble floor as they walked in to where Mr and Mrs Mitchell stood to welcome them.“Welcome, Joe. It has been too long.” Mr Mitchell greeted, shaking the hands of his long time friend.“It has. I was so happy when I got the invitation.” Joseph lied, trying his best to not act angry at what his son had done to his daughter. They needed this night to go well so Jessica could leave the country without any hiccups.“We’re so sorry about everything. That’s why we decided to invite you and your family over, when we heard the news.” Mrs Mitchell walked over to hug Janet, squeezing her in her arms like
Jessica stood at the airport terminal, her heart beating in her chest as her parents stood by her in the midst of the active individuals who were either returning or traveling to their destinations. Her father, Joseph Johnson, held her on her suitcase, a part of him unwilling to let her go. Her mother, Janet, kept fussing about the coat she had picked out to wear for this trip. The chilly in the airport sipped into the terminal from the automatic doors that had placed been at different locations. “So are you ready? Italy will be a great start for you, Jess.” Janet said, smoothing the invisible creases on Jessica’s coat. Jessica let out a smile, though her heart was heavy with this decision to move to Italy. It was supposed to be an escape for her, the fresh start that she needed for her life. Five years in a loveless marriage where she was never recognized was enough to make her want to take retreat.“Yes, mum. I know and I’ll ensure that you both are able to visit as soon as possib
“Benevento, signora Jessica.” The driver at the airport terminal greeted her with a smile on his face as he got her suitcase and put them in his vehicle. His sleek black uniform and cap shone brightly against the beautiful morning sky in Italy. “Ahh, my bad. I am your Carlo, your personal driver in the city of Florence.”“Grazie” Jessica answered, remembering the word she had learned during her flight to Italy. It was still shaky but she had put in a lot of effort to practice for this new phase of her life. The long flight to Italy had been exhausting and draining but the beautiful landscape in the city of Italy took it all away as she watched her spirits begin lifted.“Long flight?” Carlo asked with another smile on his face because he recognized the tired look on her face. It was the same with the numerous passengers he worked with everyday outside the airport.“Yes, Carlo. Very long if I must say.” Jessica said, still taking the wonderful structures in front of her in the city of
The beautiful rays of the morning sun waltzed right into Jessica’s apartment, majestically taking over the entire space which welcomed it in through the large widows placed strategically in the apartment. She opened her eyes and studied the entire room since it was her first time waking up in her new apartment in Florence, Italy. Jessica stretched lazily in her medium sized bed, taking in the cool breeze that accompanied the sun like a partner in crime. Florence was going to be her haven for the next few years of her life, a place where would start her life all over, away from the memories in Los Angeles. Here, she could make a name for herself in whatever industry she chose and she would do this while raising a child.Jessica glanced at her clock on her bedside table. “Gosh, it’s already 9:30am. What time did I finally get to fall asleep last night?” She wondered, placing her feet into the comfy shoes that had already been placed by the side of her bed.Her antenatal check-up was in
Ethan Mitchell was found on his king-size bed with every limb of his body spread out. He was tangled in the silky sheets that he had imported a few months ago for his comfort, while the remnants of food and drinks from the previous night still clung to his body. As the early morning sun made its way into his bedroom through the heavy curtains he had hung, he squinted his eyes regretting why it was morning already. To his left and right, lay two women without any form of clothing on them but the mess they had created on his bed; empty bottles of wine, glasses covered in lipstick smudges, and the smell of what seemed to be bodily fluids from a hot night. The door to Ethan's bedroom slammed open, forcing everyone to wake up immediately as they jumped to see a woman standing in front of them. It was Ethan's mum, Victoria Mitchell, standing above them and judging each of them with her dark eyes that were filled with disgust. She took a deep breath in, processing what had become of her son
The courtroom emptied, leaving behind an air of tension that seemed to live out with Jessica as she hastily made her way through the heavy double doors. Her heels hit against the cold marble floor, each step echoing the desperation screaming in her heart.Avery’s cries still rang in her ears, fueling the urgency that she felt. She spotted her daughter in the hallway, her tiny body forced against her grandmother’s tight embrace, hiccupping as the leftover tears ran down her eyes. Jessica rushed forward, her voice filled with regret.“Avery,” she whispered, kneeling. “Baby, I’m so sorry. Please don’t cry anymore.”Avery lifted her face ruined by tears, her cheeks red from the continuous crying. “Mummy...mummy, you were yelling? Did daddy do something?”Jessica’s heart clenched when she heard her daughter’s words. “No, no, my love. Not at all. Mummy wasn’t angry at Daddy. I was...I was upset at something that was happening in there.”Avery sniffled, clinging to her mother’s arm this time
The courtroom had fallen into a session of uneasy silence, the kind that pricked against the skin and made breaths seem shallow. Jessica sat on the witness stand, her knuckles white as she held on to its edges. Gregory Welsh adjusted his tie as he saw this, the perfect example of calculated confidence, his every move deliberate as he moved forward.“Ms. Williams,” he began, his voice still smooth but filled with accusation, “You have still given me an answer to my question.” Jessica’s throat tightened. Gregory’s gaze pinned her on her seat like a predator who finally caught its prey. He continued. “Why did you take Ethan’s unborn child abroad, raising her far from her biological father for five years?” Every eye in the courtroom was fixed on her, waiting to hear her answer, the same one that she hadn’t summoned the courage to give. She glanced at her later, Lois, who gave her a steady nod, urging her to remain calm and answer. But Jessica could feel the weight of judgement coming fr
The court reconvened shortly after the brief recess, the tension in the air was palpable to everyone. The jury made their way back to their seats, their earlier expressions of doubt surrounding Ethan Mitchell still roaming g in the air. Jessica Williams sat beside her lawyer, Lois, who leaned in and spoke in a low tone.“We’ve started well, Jessica,” Lois said, her eyes narrowing with determination in them. “But now’s where the real test begins. Stay calm, answer the questions truthfully, and don’t let his lawyer try to corner you. We already have momentum on our side, let’s keep it up.”Jessica nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. Her heart began to pound heavily as the judge stepped in, announcing that the proceedings should continue. It wasn’t long before that her name was called. “Ms. Williams,” the court clerk called out to her. “Please take the stand.”Jessica rose, her hands trembling as she made her way to the witness stand. She took the oat with a clear and steady voic
The room fell silent as Ethan Mitchell made his way to the witness stand. His steps were steady and calculated, but his face betrayed the unease he felt in his heart as he sat down, adjusted his tie and took the oat that was administered by the bailiff. The jury watched very closely, their expressions remaining neutral but very attentive, ready to weigh every word that proceeded out of his mouth.Lois rose from her seat, her every movement planned and deliberate. Her navy blue suit remained crisp and sharp, her expression calm but determined to bring Ethan down. She approached the stand, her bind in between her hands.“Mr Mitchell,” Lois began, her voice smooth but having a sharp undertone to it. “Thank you for being here today, we all know how busy you are. I want to just ask a very simple question. Can you please tell the court why your marriage to my client, Jessica Williams, came to an end?”Ethan shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his teeth gnashing against each other. “Our marri
Jessica sat quietly on the bench in the courthouse waiting room, her fingers gently caressing Avery’s hair as her little girl continued to hold on to her stuffed bunny. Around her, the air was filled with tension and anxiety. The polished floors around her gleamed under the light from the ceiling, but to Jessica, the space felt terrifying and uninviting.Joseph and Janet, her parents, sat behind her, their presence making sure she knew that she wasn’t alone. Janet reached out and squeezed her daughter’s hand, her lips forming into a firm line, while Joseph leaned forward, his elbows on his knees, staring at the ground as he made a silent prayer for his daughter. Ricky stood near the window, his arms crossed together, watching as though he could protect Jessica from the storm that was on its way for her.Lois, impeccably dressed in a nicely tailored navy blue suit, paced a few feet away from them, flipping through her binder and speaking quietly to herself. Ever so often, she glanced a
Jessica sat at the edge of her chair, hands cleaned tightly around her cup of tea making her knuckles turn white. The steam turned in the air, but the tea inside the cup had become cold, forgotten due to her nerves. Lois stood a few feet away from her, flipping through a binder filled with notes, legal jargon and a few highlighted sections.“Jessica,” Lois said, her voice bold but not unkind to her friend. “I need you to focus. Tomorrow isn’t just going to be about formality. The jury will decide Avery’s future. I need you to be prepared to answer their questions properly.”Jessica nodded, but her gaze was still fixed on the floor. Across the room, Ricky leaned against the wall, his arms crossed with a confidence hovering around him that she wished she had right now.Lois sighed, pulling out a chair across from where Jessica sat. She leaned forward, placing her hands on the table. “Let’s try again. What will you say when you are asked if you would like to co-parent with Ethan?”Jessic
Ethan sat in the dim light of his penthouse, his fingers drumming a rhythm on the edge of the glass in front of him. The whiskey swirled inside in the glass, a deep amber colour that looked like his current situation. His phone vibrated on the table, drawing his attention as he checked to see if Jessica had finally replied to his message.I want to see AveryHis message had been read but he had not gotten any reply. He had texted her many hours ago, every word showing his frustration, especially after the revelation he had gotten from his mum. He had called and sent messages to follow up, but this was all he got in return. Her cold detachment, her refusal to even let him spend a little time with their daughter. His thumb hovered over his phone screen, his mind racing, but the words seemed to leave before he could even think of them. He threw the phone back down on the table, the screen lighting up one more time to mock him.His penthouse had become noisy and chaotic. Laughter filled t
Ricky’s apartment had this cosy feeling to it, exuding a sense of wealth and warmth that Jessica found herself happy to be part of, admitting all the chaos from the recent days. The scent of garlic and herbs took over the air, making her stomach rumble once she stepped inside.“Ricky, this smells amazing,” Jessica said, taking off her coat and placing it on the rack that was by his door.Ricky emerged from the kitchen, a huge smile on his face. “Of course, I would prepare only the best for you. I know you’ve been through enough, Jess. Tonight is a night where you forget about the rest of the world, even though it is for a short while “Jessica smiled at him, touched by the thoughtfulness in his heart. “Thank you, Ricky. You didn’t have to do all of this for me.”“Are you kidding? This is just the beginning. Wait until you see what I have planned for dessert.” He winked, leading her into his dining room where the table was already set for two. A single candle standing in between the pl
The study was cold; on the desk were shadows flickering as the only desk lamp did its best to illuminate the room. Ethan stood at the window, his gaze fixed on the horizon far ahead of him. His mind continued to race, each thought fighting with the other, dragging for his attention. Olivia’s release didn’t make any sense to him. The bail, the timing, and the secrecy involved in it showed that someone had gone to great lengths to ensure that she walked out of there free.Clenching his fists, Ethan let out a very much-needed sigh of relief that he hadn’t realized he was holding for minutes. His hand moved to the paperwork on his desk, the reports he had gathered to find Olivia’s secret benefactor. Every lead he found pointed to the same conclusion that kept him unsettled. He grabbed his phone and dialled a number.“Ethan, darling, why are you calling so late at night?” His mother’s voice came in very warm, the kind of warmth that had helped him get away with being pampered as a young ch
