Jessica sat in her bed room, staring at her suitcase which was packed only half way. Italy was going to be her escape, the fresh start she needed, far away from every chaos that came with her life in Los Angeles. But the battle for divorce, Ethan’s cheating, and the secret that was growing within her made things feel even more heavier for her.
She placed her right on her belly, feeling the slightest flutter under her fingers. A bittersweet smile formed on her face as this happened. In a few months, she was going to be the mother of a child and the child would automatically become a part of Ethan’s life forever even though it would know him. “Jess, are you ready? Your father and the Thomas are waiting in the car.” Janet called out to her from the hallway. “Yeah, I’ll be there with in a few minutes.” Jessica replied, taking in a deep breath before pushing all those disturbing thoughts aside. They were headed to one last meeting with the lawyers to finalize everything about the divorce arrangements. She wasn’t really expecting to see Ethan there as he had been meetings like these, probably because he was home pampering Olivia, his new bride. The thought made her heart ache in her chest, but she waved if off win a few seconds. She remembered that she was breaking free from him. “You doing alright, kiddo?” Joseph asked from the front seat where he sat with the driver, glancing into the rearview mirror to catch a glimpse of his daughter’s face. “Yes, daddy. I’m as okay as I can be.” Jessica answered, forcing a smile out. “You’ve always been a strong child, just know that we have got your back no matter what.” He said, stretching his right hand backwards for her to touch him. “I know that’s why I can’t wait for this to be over.” Jessica said, grateful for her parent’s support whenever she called for them. When they arrived at the location of the law firm, the cars that had moved with them all parked. Jessica suddenly began to feel a slight pain in her stomach as she arrived. She followed her parents into the office that they had been led into by the office staff. Lois, her lawyer, was already seated and waiting with documents for their arrival. “We are set for you, Jessica. Ethan won’t be coming in today but his legal will represent him and are ready to proceed.” Lois greeted, welcoming them in with a warm smile before directing them to their sits. The began and was straightforward. Conversations about property division, settlements that needed to be made financially, and a clean break were all had in the room. Jessica joined in whenever she was called out for something, other times she was thinking about her life with her baby. She thought about how she would better individual and turn her life around with Ethan in it. “Jessica, we would be needing here on this document. This would finalize the divorce completely and once Ethan signs, you can both go your separate.” Lois spoke, drawing Jessica’s mind back to the room and the paper she was placing in front of her. Jessica stared thoroughly at the pen and paper in front of her. All they need was her signature and she finally pour in the last piece of sand needed to completely bury the coffin that held her childhood dreams of living happily ever after with Ethan. She picked up the black inked pen, her hand shaking as he signed her name on the paper. “Congratulations, Jessica. You’re free now.” Lois jubilated. Jessica let out a fake smile. She was free but it didn’t feel like that at all but she left the office teeling herself that eventually, it would. After the long tiring meeting, her parents decided that it was only right that they went out celebrate the end of their daughter’s loveless marriage. They choose to sit at a quiet café, trying to make the mood less tense for their daughter. “You’ve got a new life waiting out there for you. You are free to do whatever it is you want to do.” Her mother said, assuring Jessica as she touched her hand. “Yes, mum. My journey to Italy would be just the thing I need.” Jessica nodded in agreement. “Alright, you’re already packed so we should be expecting a date for your departure soon.” Joseph said with a big smile on his face, proud to see that his little girl was ready to spread her wings and fly. Jessica hadn’t chosen a date yet but she was already packing. She wasn’t going to tell Ethan about his child because as she was concerned, he was going to be a good father to their child. He was already too busy with Olivia and she was also going to bring in a child for him into the world. This thought made her blood her boil hot within her system but she maintained her composure in front of her parents. Their lunch break was nearly over when her Samsung device buzzed on the table. It was her lawyer, Lois. “Hey Jessica, we might have a problem. I just finished a call with Ethan’s legal team and it seems he is unwilling to sign.” Lois announced to Jessica. “He says that he has been trying you to get you to talk to him but you won’t even pick up his calls or answer his messages. This seems personal and not legal so you are not in any way obligated to see him.” She added, surprising Jessica as she spoke. Jessica clenched her fists together, listening to her lawyer talking. What would Ethan possibly need from her at a time like this? The documents were evidence that they were done but now he was demanding a meeting for no reason. “I’ll think about it, Lois. Thanks for calling me.” Jessica murmured into her phone before putting it down. “What’s going on now?” her father wondered. “It’s Ethan. He has been trying to meet with me and now he doesn’t want to sign the document unless I agree to meet him.” Jessica answered, confused at why this was beginning to frustrate her. “What a wimp. You don’t have to see him, you’ve done your part.” Joseph said, his face tightening as he spoke. “I know but I’ll just hear what he has to say. It’s better I do it now so I don’t delay my journey.” Jessica responded, biting her lower lip. “Fine. Just be careful when you do.” her mother said, motioning they begin to go home. Jessica complied as she got up from the sit to where their cars had been parked but her mind was still in turmoil. What could he possibly want after everything he had put her through?Jessica had been dreading the moment where she would have to meet up with Ethan again. She had stayed up all night wondering what he could probably want at a time like this, when the only thing they needed to finalize their divorce was his signature. It was obvious that they was no form of love between them, so why pretend when the truth was known. Yet here she was, sitting at a café that they man who had just destroyed her life had chosen. Her parents had tried their best to convince her that they was no need in going to see him, but nothing worked.“What’s the point of this meeting? He is a grown man who has made his choice to be with that woman so let him be, Jess.” He had said when she announced to them that she would be going over to meet with Ethan.“I know, dad. But deep down I just want to hear him out and leave Los Angeles knowing there’s nothing holding me back here.” Jessica had answered, trying to ensure that her emotions were in check. Her mother had not even tried to joi
Jessica sat in her family’s spacious living room, one of the many that they owned in their family estate. She was lost in thought, absentmindedly drawing out the outline of her tea cup while she sat. She had returned from the café a few hours ago, but her mind was still replaying all the events that had happened in there. It had gone worse than she had prepared for mentally and emotionally. Her parents both walked into the room, returning from an errand they had to run. They watched as their daughter sat unaware that they had walked into the room as she held her tea cup tightly. Janet, her mother. quickly took a seat which was opposite to where Jessica sat while Joseph chose his comfy armchair, watching their daughter entirely before she recognized their presence.“Earth to Jessica!”“We’ve been watching you for a few minutes and you didn’t realize that we had come into the room.” Janet finally spoke, breaking the silence and making Jessica conscious of her surroundings. “This marriage is over, Jessica!” Ethan Mitchell yelled at his visibly shaking wife who had been so eager to tell her husband about her recent pregnancy test results. Behind her was the pregnancy test kit she had earlier peed on which showed her a positive sign meaning she was pregnant for Ethan, after 5 long years of trying. Love making with Ethan these past few years had only happened when he was intoxicated so she was happy that this time it paid off.“What is the meaning of this, Ethan?” Jessica asked as she felt tears run down her eyes uncontrollably. How could this happen now? Why did the universe hate her?“Olivia is pregnant with my child and I can’t let you hold me back from being a father to my unborn child.” Ethan replied without a hint of remorse on his face.“Olivia? Your personal assistant from the office?” Jessica echoed back at him in shock of this news. It had always seemed like something was going on between both of them but she had chosen to ignore the signs.
Jessica stood looking at the positive sign on the pregnancy test kit. She wondered how her own husband could chase her out of her matrimonial home to bring in another woman. His actions had always shown that he felt nothing for her but this felt like a dagger being pierced into her heart. Filled with rage, Jessica decided to not involve Ethan in the life of their child. She wasn’t going to tell him he was going to be a father now. He had finally lost and she was finally done fighting for a lost cause.Sticks and stones really couldn’t break her bones but Ethan’s words cut deeper than any weapon on earth. How could someone be so cruel? Why? What else was he searching for? These questions ran through Jessica’s mind as she wiped the tears from her eyes.Jessica had always desired to be loved by Ethan but there she was, standing in the living room like a woman from the streets. Scattered hair, rumpled clothes and a broken heart courtesy of her first love. It had finally dawned on her tha
Days had gone by without any word from Ethan and Jessica couldn’t take it anymore. She drove immediately to court and filed for a divorce from Ethan Mitchell. He wanted it over so she was going to make it happen for him as she couldn’t take it any longer. He was already engaged to be married to his new bride and baby mama so she was going to respectfully remove herself from the picture.Their marriage had been the worst five years of life, she had always set aside her needs and wants to please a man who wanted nothing to do with her. This was going to be the last time that was going to happen.“Ethan wants me gone?. Then so be it”She looked at the notifications on her phone and saw many missed calls from Kelvin, Ethan’s best friend, but she wanted nothing to do with him anymore. They weren’t even close to start with so why was he blowing her phone with calls and texts. He hadn’t done any harm to her but she was trying to cut off all that reminded her of Ethan, her new ex-husband.
“I should have known that fool would side with Jessica. What a punk.” Ethan said as he walked out of the club. He always knew that somewhere deep down in Kelvin’s heart he felt something for Jessica but couldn’t speak up because she was with him.Somehow, Ethan’s mind was ravaged with questions and thoughts about divorcing Jessica for Olivia. He knew she was high maintenance and loved all the expensive things of life and she was about to become his wife so he was willing to take up the challenge. Jessica was a good wife, always there for him even though he never truly needed her or cared for her. She made sure he was happy even when it was at the expense of her own happiness. What a pity.He decided to return back to his home after a sour celebration with his friend, Kelvin, to be with the woman his heart longed for. He decided to stop by a flower shop to pick up flowers for the woman who carried his child in her womb. To him, no one else cared and loved him like she did, not even hi
As Jessica returned back to her family estate house after filling for divorce she was received with the warmest of hugs. She had been gone for a few hours to file the divorce papers and was just happy to be in their loving arms at last. Joseph Johnson, her father, released a breath of relief as he hugged her the most like a bear to its prey. He wasn’t going to let her stay in a marriage where she was used as a house wife while a side chic ruled over her. Such humiliation wasn’t going to be hers to bear.Jessica was the first child of two children, causing her to be child saddled with the responsibility of taking care of her younger one and setting a good example. Her parents, Joseph and Janet, had raised her and her brother to never have a reason to beg or worry. Everything they wanted was provided as quickly as possible, so they never knew lack. But the one rule they both shared as parents was to never raise over pampered and spoilt children as they knew one day they would they’d ho
Jessica sat by her family’s poolside, watching the beautiful sunset dip down into the horizon far away from her. The orange glow of its fading light moved on the surface of the water. Her mother, Janet, joined her over at the poolside, a cup of warm tea in her hands. There was a moment of silence between them as both women took in the jaw dropping view in front of them.“You haven’t spoken to him about the baby, have you?”“C’mon mum. You’ve ruined the moment.” Jess sighed, taking off her sun shades to look at her mum with a sad look on her face.“I saw no use in telling him because he had made it clear to me where I stand in his life. There is really no need dragging him back into my life and that of my unborn child.” She finished, picking up her mum’s cup of tea and taking a sip as revenge for ruining the mood.“But you know he has a right to know, Jess. He is the father of the child.” Janet insisted, placing her hand on her daughter’s chin and turning her face to hers.“That still
