"You ready?" Asher asked again for good measure. He wanted to make sure Kim was ready for what was ahead.

Kim gave him a wary look and was about to speak when her phone shrilled. She glanced at the screen to see her sister's name scrawled across it. She glanced up at Asher, wide-eyed. "It's Ava!"

"Answer it," Asher urged.

"What if she knows what happened? She'll scold me!" Kim groaned, shaking her head furiously. "I don't want to pick up the call."

"If she truly knows what happened, then she ought to be grateful!" Asher snapped. "You were standing up for her. Now chin up and pick that call. I'm standing right here."

Feeling emboldened by his words, Kim nodded, took a deep breath, and picked up the call. Ava's frantic voice hit her almost immediately.

"Kimberly! You skipped school?!"

Kim gulped and glanced at Asher briefly. "What... What do you mean?"

"Don't play coy with me young lady!" Ava snapped.

"I'm not, old woman!" Kim retorted, angry at being treated like a c
