Lucy.
All the workers at Harrison Journal sat around the conference table at the center of the meeting room, waiting for Mr. Frederick to show up. He had called a meeting early this morning. I doubt what the meeting was all about, that it had to be held so early, given that we usually have our meetings at noon.Moments later, the door to the meeting room swung open and Mr. Frederick, graciously mapped in, with his usual straight face hung up high, like he owned the world. The moment my eyes caught sight of him, I became a sweating mess. The packet of chips I held in my hands almost fell. I bowed my head and looked at the floor because I didn't want to meet his eyes. I didn't want memories of what he tried to do to me in his office to resurface again. He had been trying to do that to me for about two months now, but I couldn't tell anyone, because he had threatened me with the life of my mother and younger brother.
He further went ahead to threaten me with my job, given that it was the only thing I had sustaining my family and me for the moment.
I was completely lost in my world, with no one to talk to.
"I told you to keep those…" Debby, a colleague of mine, looked at me with a scowl on her face as her index finger pointed to the chips on my lap. "And eat them after the meeting. You know Mr. Frederick hates it when people eat in his presence. And now, he is looking at you." My heartbeat skyrocketed when she told me he was staring at me and I know for a fact that I would receive one of his punishments after this.
I folded the packet on my tights and cleaned my mouth, before looking in front, with my heart constantly thumping hard in my chest. His face looked dark and murderous. I immediately knew that something was up, aside from me eating in the meeting room.
This meeting wasn't ordinary. There must be a problem. He was a cold man, but today was different. His appearance looked even colder.
He strode behind the chair he was supposed to be sitting on.
He adjusted his gray business suit which matched the color of his gray hair.
He grabbed the edge of the chair with both hands and then glanced around the room, with his normal dark expression. His cold eyes rested on my face for a moment, before he turned away.
"One of you will be going to Caspian Power tomorrow…" he announced with a deep and threatening voice and for a moment, I was glad that he didn't talk about my clumsiness or my eating in the meeting room.
Wait! Did he just mention Caspian Power?
My eyes almost rotated out of their socket. That is the biggest and only company that supplied electricity here in Chester. It is owned by the famous Christian Caspian. Without him, this country would be in darkness.Just wow!
Why would someone be visiting him?
I strained my ears as I listened to him give his reasons.
"We are owing a light bill of two months, making a total of ten million dollars…"
He paced in front of us.
He can't possibly say we. We do not owe Caspian Power. He does.
"We need to plead with him to give us a maximum time of two weeks. So that, I can see how to raise the money. I can't go to see him, so I will be choosing one of you to do that on behalf of the company."
He stopped moving, his attention was directed towards me.
For God's sake, I hope that he was not considering sending me.
I already have enough to deal with.
The old man beseeched, his voice sounding cold as always.
"Caspian Power! Who will he send it? Because on God, I will write my resignation letter, if he send me." Debby the drama queen emuttered next to me.
Of course, who wasn't scared of Mr. Christian.
"Maybe the old man woke up from a terrible slumber". I scoffed. We understand that his company is famous and he stands a chance to talk with Mr. Christian, but not his workers.
Christian would have his guards throwing us out of his company like some bag of thrash.
I have been opportune to see him only on TV shows, interviews, and read about him in magazines, articles, journals and others.
Wouldn't it be a miracle if I happen to meet him one on one. I dreamily thought about it. But I greatly doubt if that would happen.
There was a time that the man had put the city in complete darkness for two days because a politician had infuriated him and it was only through an apology that electricity was restored. And now, my boss Mr. Frederick Harrison was trying so hard to step on the lion's tail. If that happens, there is no doubt that his company would be shut down. If it comes to that, then I will be done for, because this was my only means of survival.
"But Sir…" Debby was about to say something, but Mr. Frederick cut her off"You are too dumb to interject or give any suggestions. I had rather you stay quiet and say nothing." He growled, with veins evident on his forehead and the entire hall went silent.
"As it stands now, just one of you will do that and the rest will put more effort into working at the company." Mr. Frederick angrily said as his head snapped to my direction.
"Meet me in my office, Lucy" I heard my name and my heart immediately started thumping heavily in my chest again. I glared at him in confusion, but he was already on his way. I detest this man, with everything in me.
He was mean, heartless, cruel and all the bad things you could ever think of. He was not only doing that to me but to most of us.
With my bag pressed against my chest I stood in front of Mr. Frederick's office ? I took in a few deep breaths to calm myself down, I placed my free hand at the knob and gently pushed it open. "Have a seat" He pointed at the chair opposite him, without even lifting his head up. I felt relieved because each time he looked at me, my stomach would twitch and the memories of what he tried yesterday, recurring in my head. Waving that off, I pulled the chair behind, adjusting the long black gown on my body, I sat on it trying my best to keep a steady mind."You will go to Caspian Power tomorrow. Try by all possible means, to make him change his mind and give us some time to be able to raise money for the bills. At most, two weeks."He leaned into his chair, his gaze dancing on me. Try all possible best not to look him in the eye.
How was he so calm, talking to me like nothing ever happened? Like he didn't try to kiss and forced his way with me yesterday, right here in his office?
How could he be so calm?
A man in his mid forties and old enough to be my father. He did that and told me not to ever say it, or he was going to make my life a living hell.
"You shall convince him and tell him to give us some time. I haven't been able to make sales lately and you know that. I would not let out the little money I have so far."
He glared at me. I knew the look in his eyes, the look which always makes me uncomfortable around him. That look which told me to be careful.
Swallowing the pain, the anger inside of me, I clasped my hands tight on my tights and looked at him.
"But Boss, I'm no one to go talk to Mr. Christian. Someone else should do that."I suggested in panic wishing that he would change his mind.
He googled me for a while, with his eyes leaving my face, to my chest. They lingered a little longer on my chest. I became aware and clutched my bag tightly against my chest.
" Ofcourse, I can send someone else..." A smile surfaced on his face.
My eyes lit up in hope. Thank goodness he was reconsidering his decision.
But the grin on his face was a little bit suspicious.
However the moment he got up from his seat and stalked towards me with a menacing smile, I knew that he was up to no good again.
With panic, I quickly stood up and stalked behind.
"You know, I have liked you for a very long time now. You are one of my best workers, just like your father. You're smart and intelligent and I trust you to do this work. Forget about his status. He is just a normal human like us…"He removed his left hand from his pocket and cupped my cheeks, which irritated me so bad and I wanted to throw up.
"But since you don't consider yourself worthy enough, then, I have two other options for you." He took his hand off me and stepped backwards.
"W-what other options?" I asked nervously hoping that it would be something that I can handle.
He scoffed, with a sinister smile on his face
"Sleep with me or I will fire you." His cold tone echoed in the room and I blinked my eyes at him. Was he kidding me?He was still determined after what he did yesterday? What did I ever do to this man
" I can't sleep with you, nor can you fire me..." I said in a determined tone, ignoring the tears that were at the brim of my eyes, threatening to fall down.
He scoffed and then said "then you go ahead and do as I say. I want, results within two days"
He walked back to his seat, like he forgot to say something, he walked back where I was standing, his hand cupping my cheeks.
I tried to peel his hand off my face, but he was stronger than me. His fingers were almost entering inside my flesh. He was hurting me.
The tears that were at the brim of my eyes, fell down. "You don't have to cry at every little thing, peanut butter."
He leaned down, his lips a mere inche away from touching mine.
" And If I don't get the results within two days, you would be at the risk of losing your job.""And again, the words of what happened yesterday or now, should ever leave the walls of this office."
He yanked me roughly to the floor. He walked away. I stood up from the floor, cleaned my tears and made my home.
***
After leaving the office, I made my way home. I had decided to go to Caspian Power tomorrow, because I had no choice. Though I was anxious, I had to do it, for me and my family.
Changing out of my work clothes, I took a quick shower. Completing my night routine, I set to give a call to Caspian Power.Mr.Frederick had given me their contact details before I left the office.
I sat at my table, wondering if I should give Mr. Christian a call or send him an email
A call would be faster but I was quite nervous to do that, I didn't want to mess up, so I settled for an email.
I checked my time and it was almost 8 PM.
Perfect timing. Perhaps, I would get a reply before going to bed.
His reply would determine if I would go to his company tomorrow or not.
I finally composed the email with shaky hands and taped the sent button and the message showed that it was delivered.
Apparently, I didn't know if it would work because I was a nobody in emailing Caspian Power.
With that ideology, I included Harrison Journal. Perhaps, that could get their attention.
My laptop was on the entire time as I anticipated a reply from the CEO of Caspian Power. If only luck would be on my side.
I stirred from the bed and clicked on my laptop
"11PM and still no reply" I whispered to myself.
I was beginning to feel worried. What if it doesn't work?
Mr. Frederick would definitely fire me and then what?My family and I will suffer
No way!
If I didn't get a reply from Caspian Power tonight, I will definitely go to their company tomorrow
I shut my eyes tight, hoping that they would reply to me.
Ding! Ding!
The moment I heard the laptop ding, my eyes flashed opened and I quickly woke up from bed.
I clicked open the laptop and my eyes lit up in excitement and hope, as I looked at my screen.
"Two unread emails from Caspian Power."
Lucy. With delight, I sat on the bed, with my legs crossed. I squinted my eyes at the screen light and read the message carefully. "First, business matters with me are not discussed through emails." Oops! I was not expecting that. I went ahead to read the second message. "Secondly, Every business problem should be brought to my office." I shut the laptop and placed it back on the table. This meant that I would be going to Caspian Power tomorrow. I felt anxious, I felt scared at the same time. I have never been there, and I have never interacted with an important person like Mr. Christian before. Of course, my Boss, Mr. Frederick, was a famous man, but not as famous as Mr. Christian. I was not even a worker there, which made everything difficult for me. I sat in bed, with my eyes closed. I made a sign of the cross and asked God to give me the grace to deal with this. After that, I got out of bed. I went to my closet and rummaged through it. I had to choose my best clothes
Lucy. "Lock her up!" I ran to the door, as the words replayed in my head. "Open the damn door and let me out." I kicked and banged at the door of the room I was locked inside. Seeing that, no one was coming anytime soon, I took the red blazer off my body and made my way to the end of the room, and sat in a green deck chair that was at the far end of the room. It was the only thing inside the room. I wonder what the room was used for. I waited patiently for someone to come and open the door but no one showed up. An hour had gone by with no one coming to open the door for me. Unable to take it anymore, I walked to the door and started hitting it again. "Just let me out and I promise not to come back." A tear rolled down my cheek as I turned and leaned my back against the door. If I had known, I would have listened to my mother and quit working for Mr. Frederick. Still, I had come a long way to give up. Click!Click! The sound of the door clicking made me step away from
Christian. "How's my schedule for tomorrow?" I asked Miss Juliette, who was sitting across from me, with the buttons of her pink shirt taken off, she kept touching herself and licking her tongue with her eyes not leaving my face. She was probably going to get what she has been asking for. I stood up from my desk and pushed the black chair I was sitting on behind me. I took my black coat off my body and hung it on the chair. "Why don't we get this done with…" She placed her hands on her large boobs and looked at me with a menacing smile plastered on her artificial face. She poke her lips as she further splayed her legs on the chair she was seating on and I caught a glimpse of the red underwear she had on. I pulled my tie off my neck and walked over to her. I roughly grabbed her by her neck and made her stand up. "Look at me" I commanded and she did with her eyes blinking with fear. I leaned slowly towards her lips and watched as she closed her eyes. "If you still want to
Lucy. What was Mr. Christian doing at the hospital? And he looked so pissed off. It looked like he was scolding the doctor because he stopped the moment I entered. That son of a bitch. I almost got into an argument with Mr. Frederick this morning, because he wouldn't listen to me. He insisted I continue to persuade Mr. Christian to accept his offer or I would sleep with him and if I deny, he would fire me and I couldn't let that happen. "How did you even get hurt like this?" Brandon Walked and sat next to me, watching as I cleaned the bruises on my knees. "I have asked her too, but she wouldn't tell me." My mother confirmed, coming towards us with a green bowl with hot water inside, and a white towel. She was going to use it to massage the areas on my legs where I had bruises. I couldn't tell them what happened. I had this bruised on my leg because of Mr. Christian. He had dragged me on the floor without a care in the world, though I begged him not too. My mother would
Lucy."Umm..." he wanted me to be his cleaner. I was lost for words and didn't know how to respond to that. I thought he was just going to agree with the reason I came here and that would be it. Even if I needed another job so badly, it wouldn't be a cleaning job."What do you say? Or do you want some time to think about it?" He leaned forward and rested his hands on the table in front of him, with his lips in a thin line.I adjusted myself on the chair in front of him. I don't even need the job, so giving me time to think about it, would be useless."I have a job already and I don't need one. I only came here for negotiation and not for a job interview."I blankly said."You know, I'm a busy man. You should be thankful that, I allowed you to seat in front of me, because not many low-life people like you, would have that opportunity."Low life? My fist tightened at my side, my jaws clenched when he said that.I was not a low life, I was doing just fine until Mr. Frederick had to put
Christian. I made a promise to Kevin the last time I visited him at the hospital that I always create time to come and check on him. However my schedules these days were so tight that I didn't even have time to take care of my own things. I have the Balmoral project to take care of, to see how far it would go. I have selected some workers in my company that will be going there with me tomorrow so that we can inspect the place and see how we can build up the dam.I want it to be built as early as possible so that the indigenous people of Balmoral would have electricity in their locality.Balmoral is a local community in an almost isolated place in Chester, mainly made up of struggling individuals, who would hardly pay their bills on time and some do not even pay at all, resulting in me making some losses in the company. In order to overcome that, I thought that it would be good for me to build a dam just next to their community to make electricity possible for them and just forge
Lucy. Thankfully, Mr Frederick had agreed for me to work with Mr. Christian He didn't want to incur any losses, that's why he had to let me. If his company was shut down, that means shutting down his life as well, thereby shutting down the pride he had in him. Preparing to work for Mr. Christian, what Mr.Frederick had said to me back at his office, kept ringing in my head. I belonged to him! It sounded ridiculous each time I thought about it. Did he mean that I belong to him as a worker or did it have some meaning attached to it?Was it something else? Well, if that was the case then he shouldn't even try it because I have been patient for quite a long time now. He shouldn't do anything that will get me on the edge, because I wouldn't hesitate to exert the revenge I have been planning for a long time now. He had caused my family and me so much pain. And I would not have pity in ruining him. The lady I saw in his company, who could she be. I knew Mr. Frederick was not marri
Lucy."He doesn't like, when people take time to do what he asked them to do and trust me if he comes here that you haven't started your work, then he will be very pissed at you."My hands coiled up in a fist, once Miss Juliet finished the rubbish she was spitting out from her mouth. Even though I was coming here to clean, I wasn't expecting this kind of cleaning. I wouldn't get up early in my house, take my bath, and get well dressed to come and mop the floor of someone's office. Why would he do this? I haven't made him angry, and neither have we met before. Whatever thing was wrong with him, he should channel it to Mr. Frederick and not me. I owe him nothing. I swallowed the bitter lump in my throat and calmed down my nerves. I asked the lady who was still in front of me, with her hands folded, like she was enjoying all this. "Okay fine. What am I expected to do?"I asked. I choose to go with the popular phrase, which says "obedience before complaining."It was my first day, I c
Lucy's POV. Christian and I had left work early because we had to go meet my mother. I had called and told her that, I will be coming over with a guest. I didn't tell her wo it was. I didn't want her to be all over the place."You can park your car here." I pointed at the empty parking lot. He nodded and drove us over. When he was fully parked, we got down from the car and made our way to the door.As we walked through the front door, I could feel my excitement mingling with nervousness. I had no idea how my mother would react to seeing the famous Mr. Christian in person. She had heard about him. But I doubted if she had ever seen him in person. "Mom, I'm home!" I called out, pushing the front door open as Christian and I entered the house. My mother stood up from her favourite spot in te living room, her eyes widening as she caught sight of Christian beside me. "Lucy, is that... is that Mr. Christian?" she asked, her voice filled with surprise.I couldn't contain my grin as I nodd
Christian's POV. "So, you mean to tell me that, Mr. Frederick has refused to abide by the rules I gave him and went on to do his own thing? He is even planning on launching an attack on me and also spreading false rumors about me over the internet?" I looked over at Tony as we sat around the dining table. I had called him earlier yesterday, but he told me he was busy and only come this morning so that we could talk about what was going on and here he was telling me about Mr. Frederick who has refused to abide by the rules I gave him. This man sure didn't know who exactly he was playing with."Exactly what I heard him say. I know there was something off about that man, the moment I went to his office. To clear my doubts, I keep an eye on him and every step he made and that is exactly the information I got from him."I slammed my fist on the table in anger because I couldn't believe that after all that he had done, instead of giving him a great punishment, I decided to give him s
Lucy's POV. It has been a wonderful day and I couldn't wait to go back to that office to be with ChristianI haven't imagined this all my life to be with someone like him all my life I mean the guy who gives light to this country. It was like, when he says they should be light, there will be light and when he says there should be no light, there will be no light at all.Ever since I have been growing up, I have only heard stories about him and never really taken that into consideration.Never in my life, had I ever imagined that we two would become a thing and up to the extent that I was working for him. All that felt surreal and I couldn't just bring myself to think about it. I walk into the house all smiles. There was nothing else in my head for me to think about, except Christian and the little moments we have been having together.I walked into the living room to meet my mother watching some television series. She was so focused that, she didn't even notice me enter the hou
Christian's POV Lucy and I drove out of the company at the same time. When we were on the highway, she took the direction that led to her house while I drove to my father's house. I wonder why he was calling me. I drove into the yard and parked my car in the parking lot. I got out of the car and found George standing at the entrance of the house, with his hands behind his back, a smile plastered on his face. He is always there waiting for me, whenever he hears of my arrival. "Thank you," I told him as he took my bag inside. "Is my father in?" I asked as I followed him behind. "Yes, he is in the private living room and he has been waiting for you all day." I nodded and walked past him to the stairs Waiting for me all day. I had told him I would be coming over after work. There was no need for him to be overly dramatic. I don't know if George was the one exaggerating the whole thing or if my father had indeed been waiting for me all day. Nonetheless, I knew my f
Christian's POV. I drove home, feeling quite excited. I was getting it all back together. That girl was a gem. Something precious that I was definitely going to lose, if I didn't act fast about it.Thank Lucy for her self control that we had to stop, well, not that I didn't have any self control left. I did, but with her, it was hard for me to control myself. I went directly to the parking lot and parked my car.Closing the door, I took out the keys and made my way to the double doors that led to my house. "You should have seen him that week. He looked like he could kill somebody, until father and I had asked him to go after her rather than stay here in the house and act all moody."I heard Kevin explain and stopped, then a fist of heavy laughter bumped inside the house. "Then he went after her?" The other voice asked, still laughing. "Yes, I think he must be with her now that we speak."They went on and on and I decided to open the door. I couldn't stand there and hear them
Lucy's POV. Well well, I couldn't believe that things would end like this.We finally fixed things and everything would finally be okay now between us.Majorie and I were talking about me getting a job and I didn't know that it was going to come this quick and look at this now.Just right in front of me. I didn't even need to work so hard for it. Well, I'm happy to say the least Christian and I have been talking for the past two hours now.I kept asking him about how he has been coping and all that. I actually wanted to ask about Cyrus , like where he was and all that, if they had finally settled the difference between them. But I couldn't bring that up, given how much he disliked the guy.He was his friend and people do make mistakes but I don't understand if they have been something between them before the world Cindy stuff or it was just some mere thing. Nonetheless, I'm glad that I was finally seeing some light in his eyes, given the situations he had been through. It must ha
Christian's POV.It had been a week since I last talked to Lucy, and it was starting to weigh on me. I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. Nonetheless, I will call her after work today. I got dressed, ensuring I looked presentable, and left for workAs the day went by, my mind kept drifting towards Lucy.I couldn't concentrate on my tasks; her absence had left a void in my heart. I never thought something like this would ever happen to me, but here I was. My thoughts being invaded by a girl, a mere girl. The funniest thing is, I should be angry for what did, but I was not. Instead, I find myself, wanting the spent the rest of my days with her.Thoughts of our last conversation played on repeat in my mind, making me wonder what had happened between us.I wrapped up my work and put a few office things together before leaving for home. It's become difficult for me to concerntrate on my work because all I do is to sit and think of her.The ride back was filled with contemplation.
Lucy's POV I don't know why I was sad about his response to what I asked him back in the car. That did not sit quite right with me or is it the fact that I did not ask it directly? However, I didn't say anything as I made my way to marjorie's house. I was hurt but there was nothing I could do. I had done him wrong and I know that he was taking that on me even though he was not showing it, not that he told me but I knew for a fact that he was taking that on me. Perhaps, this was my faye and I just have to accept it and just let everything go.As the saying goes, if you love something, you should let it go. If it comes back to you, it was yours but if it doesn't come back then it was never yours to begin with. Maybe that was the case between Christian and I This was never meant to be. The earlier I come to terms with it, then the better for me .I decided to brushed all those thoughts off my head, even though I know it was going to take a long time. But for the time being,
Christian's POV. I know exactly where Lucy was going to, when she asked me that" so what now?" However, I didn't have any answer to give to that or let's just say, I wanted to clear my head off these things that were around me before anything else. I needed to deal with Mr. Frederick first and make sure that every other thing was in place before I could get to her and let her know of my intentions. She must have it in her mind that perhaps I was just trying to use her or maybe it was still about what she had done and that I was going to use it against her. However, that was not the deal. She has always been in my heart and she would always be. I just needed to fix a few things before I can call her put her down and we can talk about us and if we want to continue this or we just let it slide. I drove back to the house because I had already finished everything I wanted to do at the company so I couldn't go back there. When I got inside the living room, I could perceive so
