Avery drove into his home with Aaron riding shotgun to see police vans and ambulances parked in his driveway. His heart filled with panic as he walked past each van, ignoring the looks the officers threw his way. He wasn’t interested in any of them at the moment, all he wanted to do was see his wife and sister perfectly fine. The police wheeled out two bodies from the entrance of the house and he took off the white sheets on both to find two of his security agents in them. The maids were all looking distraught as he continued into the house, but he paid them no attention. There were a lot of police men inside the house, some dressed in uniforms and some dressed in casual wears. Zoe sat on the stairs, dressed in a white robe, her hair tangled and scattered. Detective Gonzalez was speaking to her but she wasn’t replying, instead her eyes were faced forward, staring into space.Avery felt a certain type of relief when he saw her. He made to walk towards her and to hold her in his arms wh
The next day, Zoe sat crossed legged in the middle of the bed, looking at the room and its largeness. The room had never felt this large till today and she couldn’t stop herself from remembering what she was doing in this large room while Mia was being killed. She couldn’t stop herself from remembering how she hid behind those doors like a coward while Mia was being shot by an unknown man just downstairs. She closed her eyes, pressing the pillow to her face tightly to stop the memories of the previous night from clouding her brain. She wanted to stop seeing Mia’s dead face as it stared at her but it wasn’t possible. Then she thought of the man in the garden. Yes, one thing she could do, was remember just where she had seen the man from last night. She needed to remember where she knew him and why he was killing her family. The knock on the door frightened her a little and she placed her hand over her ears, to stop the noise from affecting her.“Zoe?” Someone called from the door. She
“What do you mean that you want me to leave?” Margery asked Zoe who wasn’t even making eye contact with her. Zoe on the other hand kept on looking at Avery, pleading with her eyes that he listens to her and send her mother away.“I do not want her here, Avery.” She said to him. Avery looked from her to her mother, surprise on his facial features.“Something terrible just happened to you, Zoe.” He started. “She must have been scared to her wits. Just give her some time to at least look at you before you send her away.”She shook her head again but he ignored her and took Aaron out of the room to give them privacy. Zoe finally focused on her mother since there was nowhere else to look. She knew it was quite insensitive of her to play the blame game at the moment but that was all she could do in order to unleash the anger in her heart.Margery got up from the bed as soon as Avery and his brother left and began to pace the large room. She looked around, taking in the décor and interior of
Avery and Jacob sat together in his study trying to talk about work and the company. Avery had a glass of scotch in his hands, contemplating on whether to drink it just to escape from the ache he was feeling in his chest for a moment or to deal with his loss like a normal man. He traced his fingers around the rim of the round and short cup, staring at the content even though he wasn’t seeing anything.“Are you going to drink that?” Jacob asked him, but he shook his head avoiding eye contact. The color of the scotch and how pretty it looked inside the cup intrigued him surprisingly and he found peace just by looking at it.“Do you want me to drink it?” He asked Jacob in return who said nothing to him. They were supposed to be discussing company policies and not talk about scotch, but Avery found himself not wanting to talk about work when his sister was prepared to be buried six feet below the ground.“Maybe I should drink the scotch.” He replied. “Scotch helps sometimes and thank God
“What man with a tattoo, Zoe?” Avery asked but she shook her head, trying to clear her memory of the horrible dream that she just had. She dreamt about Francis again and this time around, the man who had killed him was trying to reveal his face to her but somebody else had prevented her from seeing him. Somebody had prevented her from being killed that night and had knocked her out of her consciousness. It was that person that stood between herself and the man who brutally ordered the killing of her ex-husband. And now, everything was becoming clearer. The pieces were beginning to be put in place and it all happened because she had recognized the man from the picture. He had triggered her memory and now all she experienced that night was beginning to reveal itself. “Zoe?” Avery called again, studying her, making sure she was alright. She turned to look at him, no longer sure that she trusted him or herself any longer. If someone from her husband’s past was killing them off, then eith
Avery and Zoe settled into the new house in the next few days and began to live their lives again. The pain of Mia’s death began to subside and they were able to smile like nothing happened. Just like Jacob had said, the security system in the new house was not questionable as it did exceed their expectations. Her mother still sent some of her men and they stood outside the gate every time of the day without taking a break which made Zoe wonder whether they slept at all.It was past ten in the night when Zoe walked downstairs to see Avery waiting at the foot of the stairs with two glasses of wine in his hand. She wasn’t surprised when she saw his to be alcohol because, they had both promised to try to ease him into mastering alcohol and controlling his personalities. When she got to the foot of the staircase, she accepted the other glass with a smile on her face.He was dressed in blue jeans and a white polo that showed just handsome he could be. Zoe smiled at his bare feet, realizing
The sound of the ambulance coming from the distance relieved Zoe, making her calm a little more than she was before. She touched her bleeding head and felt the light blood on the tip of her hands. Someone screamed her name from inside the company and she saw her mother running out towards her. She turned fully, accepting the hug her mother threw her way and allowed her to dote on her like every daughter mother do.“Oh my God, what the hell happened?” Margery asked. Zoe felt her mother’s hands shaking and took them in hers. She might have forgotten that aside been a very important person to Avery at the moment, she was equally as important to her mother.“I am fine, mum.” Zoe said calmly to her, wincing when Margery touched the cut on her head. “I am fine.”Margery stared at the scene in horror, shaking her head in the process and Zoe joined her in accessing the exploded car. The roof of the vehicle was blown off and flames engulfed the inside. Whoever might have planted the bomb did a
“They saw nothing on your company’s security cameras.” Avery said to Zoe as he joined her in the dining rom. He eyed the bacon and coffee in front of him, feeling anything but hunger at the moment. “It was all passersby and moving cars.”Zoe sighed as she sipped her coffee. She had not been expecting anything good to come out from the investigations because just like Avery had said, the perpetrators were good at what they did. She took a slice of bacon in her fork, placing it in her mouth before turning to look at him.“Did you ask my mother about the guard that I told you about?” She asked in between bites and he nodded.“She said he left.”Zoe stopped chewing at the moment and stared at him. “He left?”“Yeah.” He replied absentmindedly, finally picking up the cup from the table. “He submitted his resignation to the head of security and disappeared. Maybe the event of yesterday affected him.”Zoe shook her head, realizing that she might have seen the man who placed the bomb in the ca
