Claire was thoughtful in inviting Elena to join us. One of the many reasons I had fallen in love with her was her kindness. We had a nice meal and Elena decided to break the ice as to where Claire would be most comfortable. I didn’t want to push her to stay in our room together so I offered to move into another room. But to my surprise, she wanted to be in our room and she was allowing me to be there with her. I felt a victory in knowing I was someone she could trust again.Shortly after, we left to head to the precinct. I can tell by Claire’s fidgeting of her hand on her splint that she was bothered by the idea of seeing her attacker. It was a sensitive area for her and I’m hoping that identifying him would bring her closure so that she could focus on her healing while I worked on finding her other attacker. We arrive at the precinct and I take a moment to hold Claire’s hand and ask her to take steady breaths with me. After a few breaths, I asked if she was ready.“No, I’ll never be
We make it to precinct and Leo’s friend Mason gives me directions on what’s to come as walk into the room for the photo line-up. He tells me that my attacker won’t be able to see me as there is a one-way mirror in the room and that Leo was to stand in the corner so that the identifying of my attacker wouldn’t not be considered compromised.I take a moment to breathe and speak with Leo to soothe my raging emotions. It started to help until the attorney of my attacker appears. The man had hardly said a word but his presence felt more like a a scare tactic. He didn’t speak a word to Leo or I as Mason used the intercom to request that the inmates be sent in.I opted in for watching the numbers rather than their faces - at first. An array of six men had appeared - I notice that they are dressed to match the description of my attacker. I close my eyes for a moment.“Okay Claire, the men are all lined up. Mind you, we’re in no rush and there is wrong answer” “Okay.” I slowly open my eyes to
I watch Francisco pace nearly the entire day and what was once a fun and sexy distraction was now a pain that I couldn’t rid myself of just yet.“Any updates?” I didn’t really care. I just needed to know when his in sufferable pacing would end.“He is still in custody.” He presses as I watch him.“Can we at least get something to eat? I’m hungry.” I was actually hungry but it was also an excuse to get out of this pathetic excuse for a house.“Okay. But no extra stops.” I felt like prisoner or a princess locked away in a dingy tower, awaiting my rescue.“Fine.”After driving into town, we walk a block over to a bistro and pass a television repair store in which there’s a vintage tv playing in the window.‘Breaking news as a mafia members has been arrested in connection to attack of an up and coming architect. DNA evidence has shown the suspect was responsible. Chief Commissioner of law enforcement has confirmed arraignment is to take place today.’I watch as the woman described the nat
I don’t understand how I could’ve been completely unaware of the officer that had followed me into the bar just two night ago. I was following my ritual before each shipment came in. I would get a few drinks, find a woman’s company and be ready for work the next morning. But this time, company had found me and there were too many for me to kill, in order to escape.I take note of the officers’ name. I would remember it for when I was back to my freedom and able to kill him. After my processing, I begin to wonder. All this commotion over that pretty little woman? Why was she of this much importance? I didn’t harm her to extent I’d like - it was just a hand. Who was this woman to Charlotte? I realize how much I had forgotten to ask. But now I had time to recover my thoughts as I’m sure I’d be sitting here for a good amount of time. May as well use the public computer access in here to find out. I look up that Charlotte woman that Francisco was involved with and read the article of her
“Do you think the guy I identified at the precint knows who framed Matthew?’ Leo and I had made it back home and after showering, I felt more at ease and able to communicate.“We think so. That quantity and quality of drugs has only ever been identified twice and both cases have been the Italian mafia here on the west coast. Mason and I had started piecing that together long before we had your attacker’s DNA ran through CODIS.” His transparency gave me a sliver a hope that Matthew would be home soon. He has to be - with a pregnant partner and a baby on the way. “Claire, I’m also certain that he knows something about Matthew’s case. It’s just a matter of how much he’s willing to give in terms of information. The mafia is trained not to rat.” He presses. I know he was telling me this so that that I wouldn’t get my hopes up but I couldn’t help but want the freedom of my brother. His imprisonment has been long enough and it has been because of me. The guilt was eating away at me.“They c
I ensure Elena is aware that Claire is staying back before leaving for the precinct. My driver was already parked outside and I simply gave him the address to the precinct. As I’m walking in, I see a lot of buzz and realize they were all trying to move hastily to find Claire’s first attacker. Word must’ve spread that my incentive was not real but paid with no questions asked. I watch Mason as he makes his way towards me.“Come on. We’ve got an interrogation to do. I follow Mason to his police car and hop in. Now that my wife’s attacker, Roman, was arraigned, all interrogations had to be held in the county jail.“Any rules I need to follow?” I ask out of courtesy. I can’t guarantee my behavior at its best. He did disfigure Claire’s hand after all.“You can’t physically attack him. And you can’t ask questions pertaining to his case without his attorney present.”“Is that all?” Mason nods in confirmation.“Well this is going to be easier than expected.”“Well there’s only one small issue
I slipped. The first time I had ever ratted and I slipped. I said one word too many. Francisco was not going to like this but I needed to reduce my sentence if I wanted to get into prison sooner. The trial meant I would be left without contact for up to two years. A plea deal meant I would be seen within two weeks to accept my deal and be transferred to the prison where I could obtain a phone and speak to my uncle. Most importantly, warn him about Charlotte.I walk into a separate room with my attorney.“I think that’s gone well, Roman. You only have to serve eighty percent of your sentence and with good behavior, you’ll be out in less time than that.”“I don’t intend on staying here for twenty years. There’s no women in here.” I shrug.“A valid point. Is there anything you’d like me to share with your uncle on your behalf.”“Yes. Tell him when the cats are away, the rats will play. He will know what to do with that information.”“Okay. I’ll motion for your court date to be extradited
Roman’s attorney finally calls me to give me word on my nephew. I hurriedly answer the phone and hold my finger up to Charlotte.“How is he?” I ask sternly. I had no interest in small talk. I would have to tell my sister he was in jail.“He is fine. He had a message for you today.” His monotone voice told me that this wasn’t good.“What is it?”“When the cats’ away, the rats will play.” I freeze in my pace as I hear his message. Roman never ratted and I’m unsure why he would choose to now. What did he say?“What was said?” “Confidentiality restricts me from saying anything until his sentencing. You know that, Francisco.” He was right. I couldn’t risk any harm to my nephew but Charlotte needed to be protected.“What was he looking at?” “Forty five to sixty years. His DNA was found in other crime scenes and the systems have changed. They were more efficient now. I believe it has to do with his last customs’ husband.”“The billionaire?” Surely he did not mean Leonardo.“Yes, I’m sorry
I drive Celeste, my potential son and myself to the nearest lab testing center and request a paternity test. The nurse informs me that they have a new form of rapid testing in which I could have the result before I get home and I agree to pay the fees. The nurse then brings out some forms to sign before we have a seat.“What’s his name?” I ask quietly as I wait in anticipation to take the test.“Lexington.” She says as she bounces him on her knee. I didn’t know how to make small talk with her so I just settle for silence.“Do you want to hold him?” She asks hesitantly.“Sure.” I hold my arms out as she passed me Lexington and he immediately smiles at me. He begins giggling as he reached for my nose and I smile as I keep moving out of his grasp, teasing him and watching his excitement build. Celeste watches carefully and I see something close to sadness building in her expression. “He sure is a happy baby.”“He is. Never cries, never fusses and sleeps throughout the night.” She agrees
I hear a car door just outside and rush to the front door as it opens. Leonardo and Julia step inside. “Leonardo needs his wound to be checked.” Julia announces as I rush to Leo’s side as I see blood stained onto his suit that looks as though it were cut. He seemed defeated.“Oh my god, Leo! Are you okay?” I say as I pull him to my bathroom where I keep a first aid kit.“I was wrong.” He murmurs as he removes his suit jacket and sits on the toilet lid. He begins unbuttoning his shirt with his head held low and I help him pull it off carefully.“What happened?” I ask quietly as I assess the cut on his forearm. It was three inches long but not very deep. “Charlotte attempted to attack Julia. But Julia overpowered her and defended herself and it threw Charlotte into a rage. Julia recorded everything for you.” He keeps his head low.“Why are you so sad? Are you in pain?” I ask as I get saline water to rinse out his wound.“You were right. Charlotte is a danger to you, our boys and mysel
I take the staged call and head outside. It wasn’t a contractor, it was Claire. She wanted to see how Charlotte would respond to Julia while I wasn’t around and Julia felt confident that she could handle herself.“Everything is going well. Charlotte is alone with Julia now.” Julia seemed very brave.“Don’t leave them alone for too long.” She instructs.“She’s recording the entire conversation from her phone. There’s nothing to worry about. I’m going back inside now. Okay?” “Okay, be careful.” She said before hanging up. I turn to go back inside and as I enter the restaurant, I can see Charlotte is angered and has a knife. I decide to watch her actions as Julia seemed completely calm and in control of the situation. I listen closely to their conversation.“You think Leo will make an honest woman out of you? You’re just French whore in a nice dress. I’m sure you laid on your back plenty of nights to afford it.” She seethes as her grip remains firmly on the knife.“Wrong again, Charlot
I step out the vehicle as Leo opens the door for me. I can see Charlotte through the window of the restaurant as I drape myself on Leonardo’s arm. “You should look at me and laugh as though we’re having a nice conversation. Laughter is often mistaken for chemistry and your audience is at the window.” I say as I smile and laugh. He laughs softly and plasters a light and natural smile.“Good eye.” He replies as he opens the door for me. We step inside and give the host Charlotte’s name. We are then instructed to follow him to the table where we’d seen Charlotte from just outside. She’s reading the menu as we appear and looks up. Her face turns from a face of excitement when she sees Leo to a face of confusion as her eyes land on me.Charlotte was not as pretty as I anticipated. Francisco has disappointed me. He ran to be in the arms of this woman?“Leo, it’s so good to see you.” She stand to greet him and I feel him tense. “And who is this?” “This is Julia. We’ve been seeing each othe
“Well that was quite a show. I didn’t expect that from Nathan.” I say as I stand there while Claire sits down.“Celeste is a piece of work. She’s always wanted Nathan for his money and he’s not wrong. I don’t think that’s his child. I think it’s Jordan’s.” Jasmine might be onto something there.“He does look like that smug little con artist.” I sneer as I think of his smug and crooked face.“We shouldn’t get involved. It looks like Nathan has things handled.” Claire says softly as she rubs her belly. “I just hope he’s okay.”“What do you mean?” Why wouldn’t he be okay?“He’s always wanted kids and I don’t want him to be let down if he finds out that the baby isn’t his. His dream was sitting right in front of him.” She motions to where they sat on the couch. Claire was always very empathic to others but for some reason, I always felt uneasy about her empathy towards Nathan. It just seemed like they were getting too close and I didn’t want any man that close to my wife.“I think he’ll b
The last person I expected to show up at Jasmine’s front door was Celeste. After I had found out about her and Jordan, our tumultuous divorce proceedings and pointless mediations, I expected to never see her again. Yet, here she is with a little boy and she’s certain that he’s mine. He has brownish black girl like hers and brown eyes. To be frank, he truly looks nothing like me.Even though, I know I shouldn’t. I find the words escaping my mouth before I can take them back.“Is this really my son?” I felt it when the air shifted in the room. Claire and Leonardo stood there silently, Jasmine walked in and froze and time felt frozen. Let me clarify a few things, Celeste never wanted children. I always tried to convince her otherwise but she would refuse, saying that a child was nothing short of a distraction from us living our best lives together. And now, after we’ve divorced and she’s gotten the house, moved a random man into it and a small percentage of my company shares, she’s back
Claire and Jasmine listened closely to the conversation I had with Charlotte on the phone. They felt triumphant as I played my part. “Well she seems convinced.” Claire smiles as she sits down on the couch beside me. “Now, we just have to get Julia and Leo ready to rub it in. The letter said six o’clock, right?” Jasmine confirms.“Yup. I already texted Julia and she said she is getting ready. She wants to make sure she is dressed for the occasion.” Claire seemed a bit nervous but she did it well.“You brought your nice suit, right Leo?” “I did and before you ask, it’s black.”“Good, that means it’ll match with Julia.” Jasmine smiles as her need for color coordination is satisfied.“How do you think Julia will act when she’s faced with Charlotte?” Claire asks quizzically.“I’m not sure. But I should get changed. Julia should be arriving in the next thirty minutes to debrief before we head out.” I stand and leave the room to change. It felt odd to be going to dinner in the company of
It’s late morning when I awake from my nap. The medication they gave me was great at silencing my dead mother but horrible for my energy. Every dose I’d taken had driven me to a long deep rest that encapsulated my hours. I grab my phone and see blog and tabloid notifications - my favorite reading material as I was able to read about myself multiple times. Although, I was glad for my absence in these apps as of recently. The last thing I wanted was to be paraded around as a lunatic.I open the first app to read about today’s events and see Claire is plastered on the front page.“Billionaire’s wife trades high life for loving longevity?” I continue reading as the article names a ‘Nathan Carter’ as Claire’s new love interest and describes their poolside manner as romantic and intimate. Did she really trade Leo for this guy? He wasn’t nearly as handsome as Leo. I look up his net worth isn’t even in the same caliber as Leo. How stupid of her. I continue to look at the photos and I’m struck
I watch the movements of Charlotte’s ankle monitor and to my surprise, it hasn’t move at all from the primary residence. I checked its connection and gps settings. Only to find that everything was working perfectly.Leo informed me of his and Claire’s plan to seem separated in the blogs to make Charlotte more confused and less hyper-fixated on hurting Claire and for some reason, I feel like it might’ve worked. Claire hadn’t had a run in with Charlotte and she hasn’t left to see Leo either. Did her psych hold have something to do with this?I ask the officers providing surveillance at Charlotte’s residence to check in every two hours, just in case. Charlotte wasn’t a dumb woman. She was cunning, fast and maniacal. If she were planning something then I needed to be top of it before anyone got hurt. Surprisingly, the only alert I’d been given was a visitor to Dahlia. The view was partially obstructed but they believe it wasn’t friendly as the woman left without entering and Charlotte sla
