Chapter 44

Derek and Deidre’s parents were still up when they got home. Q had met them at the townhouse with Dr. Cleaver, the ophthalmologist that looked at Derek last time when one of Chelsea’s sisters had maced him.

“So, you say that this was an accident?” Dr. Cleaver said as he examined Derek’s swollen eyes

Derek could see enough to see his mother ringing her hands nervously. She was worried sick.

“Um, yeah. My sister-in-law . . . a different one, sprayed me thinking I was a burglar.”

“Again?” Dr. Cleaver asked as he stood up straight. He removed his loop. “Derek, I suggest you stop sneaking up on your wife’s sisters.” The look on his face said he didn’t believe a word of it.

“Is he going to be all right?” his mother nearly croaked out.

“Oh, yes, ma’am. I don’t see any scratches or abrasions in his eyes. His left eye got it worse than his right eye this time. And it doesn’t seem as bad this time,” Dr. Cleaver
