Faith was on cloud nine. She practically floated back to her hostel. Honestly, she wasn't entirely sure how she got there.
All she knew was that she'd entered a cab and was dropped off at the University gate. Her body hadn't even registered the walk to her hostel. She walked the Halls of the hostel blankly. This time, she didn't stop to think about the fact that a single room here was more luxurious than her entire house back home. When her parents and siblings drove down to drop her off at the start of the semester, she could tell that they were all exceedingly jealous of her even if they didn't say it. She didn't blame them for it.She'd felt guilty and awkward standing in front of them, knowing that she would now live here with the rich people she'd so desperately wished she were a part of from childhood while they would have to go back to their shabby home. She was officially the one that made it out. She felt guilty about that. The least she could do was finish well, get a good job and take care of them. But this time, Faith didn't think about any of that. She didn't think of anything until she got to her apartment, 242.Suddenly, she felt the strong urge to talk to someone, tell someone what just happened. Just to make sure that it was real and not her imagination. She'd already pinched herself ten times in the space of the 20 minutes it took to get here. She sent up a silent prayer that her roommates would be in and pushed open the door. The door opened to reveal a brunette in a tank top and cargo pants, spread out on the couch. She had a book open in her hand."Adele!" Faith rushed in.She hadn't considered how alarming it would be for her to rush in and yell. The girl fell off the couch in shock."Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to yell." Faith rushed over to her and helped her back onto the sofa. She adjusted her glasses which were sitting precariously on her nose due to the fall."I'm fine." She said with a tinkering laugh, her posh British accent rolling off her tongue smoothly. "What's got you so excited today? You didn't seem all too chipper this morning.""The craziest thing happened to me today. Honestly, I'm not sure if it's real or not.""Oh, now you have me curious. Go on, tell it."Faith shot up from the couch. "I need some water first. I think I may be hyperventilating.""Sit. I'll get you some water." Adele all but shoved her back onto the sofa and hurried off to their joint kitchen. She returned soon after with a cup of water for Faith. She gulped it down. The moment she set down the cup, Adele was on her. "Now, tell me everything!"Faith took a breath and launched into the story. She told her everything; how Ernie had asked her out earlier, how the strange man came in and ordered the drink, how she went to his office and how she got offered the job."He offered me $8000, Adele. $8000 per month!""Oh...that's nice. Really nice." Faith knew that her roommate was just trying to be nice. The money wasn't a lot to her.She spent that much on a bag just last week, but she was a sweet, empathetic girl so she understood how much it meant to Faith."I'm so happy for you." She gave Faith a hug."Thank you." She hugged her back."This means you can quit your jobs now."The girl had been trying to get Faith to quit her jobs for weeks. She'd even offered her some money but Faith turned it down. She would work for her own money."Yes, I can. But I really like working at the library. I think I'll keep that job. It can't hurt. I'll be able to study while there, and tutoring him would be just like studying too. I don't need to worry about my grades anymore."Everything was working out perfectly. Not a little too perfectly, she hoped."Oh, I just love how you met. it all sounds so romantic." Adele sang, batting her eyes.Faith didn't need to look down at the book Adele had dropped earlier to know that it was a romance book. She had two shelves full of them in her room. Faith herself had borrowed a good number from her. Still, she rolled her eyes at her friend."Everything sounds romantic to you." Faith had barely finished the sentence when the door opened and another girl walked in."What's going on?" She asked immediately she spotted them together on the sofa. Faith was usually not home by this time, and if she were, she would be studying."Faith got a job." Adele piped up before Faith could say anything. She launched into the story Faith just told her and recounted everything to the newcomer. When she named the amount Faith was to get, the girl raised a brow. Faith could tell what she was thinking. Was that what all the hurrah was about? Oh, to be born rich."Hmph, congrats I guess." With that, she moved to go to her room. That was Sheila for you. The much less empathetic but just as awesome third roommate. Faith didn't take offence to her response. It was just like her to act like that even though she was happy for her."Thank you." Faith called after her retreating back."I wonder who would give you such a job. Did you catch his name?" She didn't turn around or wait for an answer.Adele looked at her expectantly, waiting to hear the name of the male lead in the imaginary love story she was already creating in her head."Just his first name, Devlin. Apparently, he donated the pool everyone was raving about a few weeks ago."Sheila practically slid to a stop. She whirled around. "Wait, you mean Devlin as in Devlin Banks?""You know him?" Faith asked, wide-eyed."You know him?" Faith asked with surprise. She looked over at Adele who was also gaping at her."Who doesn't know him?" Sheila shook her head at Faith. "Girl, have you been living under a rock?""No, just living under a lot of work."Sheila rolled her eyes but didn't make any comment about that. "He is one of the richest, most successful people in the country.""It's true. He owns a tech company." Adele chipped in. "I can't believe you don't know him. He's always in magazines. He was voted most eligible bachelor by the Star Magazine last year.""So he's like a big deal?""The biggest deal. I can't believe that he's schooling here and no one knew till now. They really worked hard to keep it out of the media." Sheila shook her head."You seem to know him quite well.""More like I know of him. My father does some business with him so I've met him a few times. Nothing deep."Faith gulped. If her super-rich friends were acting so wonderstruck, just how important was this Devlin character.
"This is Devlin. Here's my direct line. See you at 6 on Monday for our first session. Address attached."That was the content of the message that had turned her stomach to a sludge pudge for the past four days. From the moment she read the message, she was filled with apprehension. At first, she didn't understand why. After all, this was not her first rodeo. She'd tutored all through high school for the extra bucks. But this time, the stakes were higher. She wasn't tutoring for a few bucks anymore. This job was now her lifeline especially since she dramatically quit two of her jobs over the past few days. She recalled her encounter with Anthony the manager just two days before. She'd come in to work as she was scheduled and gone in the back to inform him that she wouldn't be working there any longer. He did not take that information well. "You can't quit now! Where do you expect me to get a replacement? The session is already underway.""Perhaps you should look in the same place you
"Want a ride?" Devlin's devilish face smiled at her from the comfort of a black BMV Convertible with the top down. Why was he laughing? What was there to laugh about? Frustrated and angry, the tears burst out from Faith in torrents."Are you crying?" Devlin asked in disbelief. He stepped out of his car and hurried up to her. "What's wrong?""What's wrong?" She repeated. "What is wrong is that I've been walking through this massive graveyard of an estate for thirty minutes."The words were coming out in torrents. "The guard wouldn't let the cab in which you could have told me ahead. He sent me into this maze with no directions. Nothing! Devlin stood quietly, letting her vent. "All I have is your stupid house number, 387A. But the numbering here is insane! Why would 157A be right next to 226A? And WHY IN THE WORLD would it be opposite 228B!" She finished her rant, breathing heavily.Realizing that she was done, Devlin finally spoke. "I'm sorry. It's my fault. I didn't even think of th
Devlin gave her a confused look. "Fired? Why would I fire you?""I d-didn't arrive on time. You said we should meet by six but it's almost seven now.""I don't see how that's your fault. Isn't that what you were yelling at me earlier? That's it's all my fault?" He grinned at how flustered she became as she remembered yelling. "Why would I fire you for something that's my fault?"She didn't have any answer to that. She groped around her mind for what was appropriate to say. She finally settled for, "Thank you." "Yeah, whatever. I know I'm awesome."Faith rolled her eyes and turned to enter the bathroom. There was no way she would sit there tutoring him looking like a homeless racoon. Before she closed the door behind her, she held his eyes, "And I absolutely don't have any mucus on my face." She slammed the door shut in his face. The sound of Devlin's laughter filtered through the thick door. Faith stood before the mirror and checked herself out. She looked horrid. Her eyes were swoll
Faith prepared herself to grab the steering wheel. She would rather die than be kidnapped for whatever evil purposes a CEO would kidnap a person for.Her mind moved rapidly, reminding her of every bit of alarming information she'd heard on the news; from sex rings to strange rituals. She would do down swinging, and take the bastard with her.Devlin glanced at Faith. He must have seen the mad glint in her eyes because he finally deigned to say something. "Calm down, will you? I'm just taking you to your d*amned hostel."It took a moment for his words to register in Faith's half-crazed brain. "What?" She said slowly. "Why would you do that?""Because I'm a gentleman?" He scoffed.Faith responded with a scoff of her own. Gentleman, indeed. If he were a gentleman, then she was the pope."Doesn't seem right to leave you to make your way back this late when I can just drive you home." Faith squinted at him suspiciously. What did that mean? That he was trying to be nice. She don't think he
Faith traipsed self-consciously to her morning lecture. The events of the past few days had set her on edge.As predicted by Sheila, she'd quickly become the talk of the campus. She'd also appeared in several tabloids and YouTube videos.Granted, she'd always dreamed of being famous but not in this way. Rather than being known for her brain and dedication, she was now wildly known for being Devlin Bank's potential love interest. She couldn't go anywhere on campus without people looking at her, pointing at her and whispering about her. Going out of her room at all had become a serious problem.Just to attend her lectures today, she'd donned a face cap pulled down over her eyes and a nose mask to mask her identity. It was surprisingly effective. Sure, some people gave her an odd look or two but they didn't stop to stare and whisper. That very unfortunate night that Devlin drove her back, she'd gotten a text from a reporter at StarTimes requesting a sit-down with her. That very night!De
Before she could say anything, another sound came through the door. This time it was a different voice and a different kind of grunt. The loud moan filled the air. Her eyes widened. A laugh burst through her lips. She clapped her hands over her mouth to keep it silent."Oh, Mr Banks," the moan came again. Faith unconsciously took a step forward. She thought she recognized the voice but she couldn't be sure.Casiuss put out a hand in front of her and stopped. He motioned to her to follow him. They left that area and went to a different room.It was a full-size gym. Every kind of equipment she would expect to see in a standard, commercial was there. "Wow." She stepped further into the gym."You like to gym?" Cassius asked."Do I look like I gym?" She asked with a laugh. He smiled at her. "I guess not. I hope you don't mind but since we're here, I'm just going to get some work in.""Oh, I don't mind at all."He started undoing his buttons. Faith swallowed heavily, the threads of antici
"Look here, Mr Banks.""Over here, Mr Banks.""Hi, Devlin! Devlin!"Everyone was shouting at once. The lights didn't stop flashing for a moment. Faith was starting to feel nauseous.Devlin was forced to slow down and stop the car lest he run over someone. The lights flashing in his face probably made it difficult to drive as well.He folded his hands and leaned back casually in the seat. Meanwhile, Faith practically cowered against the side of the door. She would open the door and make a run for it but they were everywhere, pressed up to the door, to the hood...everywhere! She couldn't even open the door."Hi," Devlin said as casually as he looked.Like magic, they all fell quiet. "How are you guys going today?""We're good, Devlin. Thanks for asking," someone shot back."Is this your new girlfriend, Mr Banks?" Another person asked."Who? Her?" He casually put his hand around her seat. What was he doing? Was he trying to destroy her? If someone took a picture of them in that position
"Dev! Get out!" Faith yelled. "Out! Out!" Sheila yelled too, determinedly pushing Devlin out of the room. "You shouldn't be here. Don't you know that it's a bad omen to see the bride before the wedding?"Devlin groaned. "Come on! I don't believe in superstitions. Can I just see my lovely wife?""She's not your wife yet, mister. Not until the ceremony is complete. Plus, you saw her last night. You too idiots slept in the same bed. I don't understand why you can't stay apart for even a second." She got him out the door and slammed it shut in his face."Done," she declared, dusting off her hands and returning to Faith. There was a short knock at the door and it opened again.Sheila turned around in exasperation. "Devlin, if I have to tell you one more time--"But it wasn't Devlin who stepped in. Adele squealed and rushed over to Faith, pulling her into a hug. "Oh my gosh, honey, congratulations!"Faith hugged her back. "Thank you, Adele. I'm so glad you could fly in.""Girl, I wouldn't
Immediately Faith saw Devlin walk through the door, her heart started beating faster, her palms started sweating and her breathing became heavy. She was scared of how their encounter was going to go, but damn did he look good. He was dressed in black cargo pants and a teal green shirt. His hair was rough and uncombed. He'd obviously come straight from bed.As soon as he entered, his eyes started scanning for her until he saw her and their eyes met. He pressed his lips together and started walking towards her, not breaking eye contact. From the corner of her eyes, she saw Adele pulling a reluctant Sheila away and into the house to give them some privacy.“Faith”, Devlin said softly as soon as he reached her.“Devlin”, she replied, breaking their eye contact now that he was close. It felt uncomfortable to continue to look him in the eyes like that. Also, she was worried her heart would go into overdrive at the sight of him.It wouldn't do to show him how much he was affecting her. Not w
As she drove to his house, she could not help but feel nervous. This would be the first time she was seeing him since they went on the road trip together and he had all but said he’d be fine with whatever direction their relationship took. She had been a friend when he desperately needed one but now that she had offered all the help she could as a friend, she could not continue with that. And even though she was the one who severed their relationship in the fist place, she loved him too much to be able to accept that. She drove like a madman, remembering ironically that she'd called Sheila that just earlier that day. She was mostly nervous and worried for him but underneath the nervousness, she was excited to see him again and maybe that had a part to play in why she drove so fast too.She arrived at his house several minutes earlier than she should have, jumped down and practically ran to the front door. She pressed on the door bell.Devlin himself answered the door, but the sight th
After they had breakfast and washed the dishes, they moved to the living room to hang out. The next few hours were full of light-headed conversations while munching on snacks.Sheila suddenly reached out and smacked Faith on the head. "Hey! What was that for?" Faith complained.“We’re going to a pool party. You should come with us”, Sheila said with wide, innocent eyes. But her amused smile gave her away.“Yeah, you should come. It’ll be a lot of fun”, Adele added.“I don’t know. You know pool parties aren’t really my scene”, Faith replied shaking her head. “You guys go have fun.”“Not without you, babe”, Sheila said.“Yes, pleeease”, Adele added pleadingly.“I don’t know”, Faith said. She was not really feeling it.“Come on, you had a lot of fun yesterday, right?” Adele asked her.“Yeah, but that’s different. That was you two. This time it’ll be a bunch of people I don’t know”, Faith replied trying to convince them.“It’ll be a lot of fun. And you won’t be with the bunch of people,
They got to the movies just in time to see a rom-com movie. Sheila wasn’t much for it but it was the only movie left that hadn’t started. They got some popcorn and drinks and went in to the cinema. It was always nice to spend time with Adele and Sheila, though they did not do it very often. A little into the movie, they started started talking to each other, making funny comments about the actors. One of the attendants came up to them and told them to keep quiet. Apparently, someone somewhere had complained they were disturbing everyone. They agreed to keep it down and the attendant walked back up t his post.A little later, they could not help it and just started talking again. Adele who did not seem too enthusiastic about the movie at first started shouting out her comments loud enough for the entire cinema to hear them. The attendant started for them once more but seemed to decide against it halfway and turned back. Maybe because everyone was laughing and no one was complaining. Sh
They ate the dinner prepared by Laura and once again, they offered to wash the dishes. Laura agreed after much persuasion. Once they finished with that, they went back to the living room where they struck up a conversation.“So Faith, how did you meet Devlin," his father asked.“Devlin reapplied to College. He needed a tutor and fortunately for him, I was available--the highest scoring entrant that year.”“Tutoring him could not have been easy. He must have been a pain in the ass. Pardon my language.”Faith smiled. “Oh, don't worry about it. And yes, he we incredibly insufferable. He’s lucky I was patient because I don’t know what he would have done without me.”“Well, thank you for staying by his side even when he’s such an idiot”, he said looking at her in a way that made her feel like he also understood what was going on. Was that something every parent had, she wondered.Devlin didn’t seem to understand since he was just laughing. He looked like he was really happy to be back home
Walking up to the house seemed to take forever. Now that they were here, Faith could not help but be nervous. She was nervous for him of course, but she was also nervous for herself, because she was going to meet the parents of the man she had been dating. Well, use to date. She had no reason to be nervous since they were not seeing each other anymore- for the moment- and she was only supporting him as a friend. Her body however had a mind if its own as she could not stop fidgeting.Eventually, they got to the door but nobody knocked. Devlin seemed to be a little scared so she fought down her own nervousness and knocked for him.A few seconds later, a man who looked exactly like Devlin, except older, opened the door. Immediately he saw who his visitor was, his eyes widened in surprise and a smile gradually formed on his face."D-Dad, its-its been a while", Devlin said looking down unable to meet his father's eyes."Devlin. What are you standing there for? Give your old man a hug."Wit
"So, tell me what happened", Faith said immediately."Well, I got in, and we talked and...""Oh no, my bad. First, what happened at the door?""This is going to be long, isn't it?""Well, the faster you answer, the sooner it'll be over"."How about I just give you a detailed summary of what happened?""Ok, alright." "When I rang the doorbell and she opened up, she was of course surprised to see me. I couldn't tell if she was scared because she sent the letter or was just still angry. Either way, I was still to blame"."She asked me what I was doing there and I told her I just came to talk. Of course, she replied that I was a few years too late and I did not have any right to come into her home after all that time.""Then I remembered what you said about speaking from my heart and I just told her, "I know that I ran away, but I loved your daughter. And it's because I loved her so much, that I risked coming all this way and getting turned back to get a chance to make things right.""By
Two days later, Faith and Devlin were in her car on their way to Isabella's parent's house. They chose her car since it wasn't as flashy as his and conveyed at least a bit of humility. They had left very early in the morning. He had to drive to her house first since she insisted they take her car. He arrived to meet her ready, so they started the journey without him having to enter her apartment. It had been a very silent trip. He was terrified of what he was on his way to do. She didn't quite know what to say to him, so they spent their time doing separate things, her on her phone and he pretending to be focused on driving. After a while, he stopped the car on the side of the road and said to her, "Would you please take over driving. My hands can't seem to stop shaking"."Of course", she replied at once. She then immediately came out of the vehicle and switched seats with him.Once they were back on the road, he turned to her, "I don't even know what I'll say, how to start. I just te
