#26 The Declaration

"If you thought we would judge you, you wouldn't have asked us to come!" Asher said in a bored tone.

“I didn’t bother judging you when you stole my husband,” I said, trying to lighten the mood with a joke. When no one responded, I quickly added, “Well, when we were kids, didn’t we play house-house? You were always this superwoman, and I was the Luna, and John was my husband. Remember?”

“Why would you bring that up? You forced me to be your husband. I always wanted to be Superman with Kathy!” John whined, his irritation clear.

“Well, aren’t you now?” I shot back, puffing out my cheeks. It was all in good fun, but the atmosphere remained tense. I had never been interested in John beyond friendship, and the playful memories seemed out of place in the current context.

“Your jokes are lame though,” Asher laughed, adding to the awkwardness with his sardonic humor.
