#25 Kathy's Dilemma

I flinched, my eyes widening in horror as John’s words echoed through the room. My mind raced to grasp the implications of what I had just heard. Despite my inner turmoil, I tried to maintain a façade of normalcy, tapping away on my phone and sending a text to Jake about my location to appear engaged and calm.

“You think she’s cute?” John blurted out, his voice loud enough to slice through the low murmur of the conversation. It was as if he was deliberately drawing attention to me, and my heart raced with anxiety. I wished the floor would open up and swallow me whole.

“Don’t you?” Asher’s smirk widened, his eyes locked on me with an intensity that made my skin crawl. There was something unnervingly sincere about his gaze, making me feel like I was under a spotlight. His attention was both flattering and disconcerting.
