Rei’s Point of View
He said yes. Xavier said yes to coming back to my house and spending the night with me there. I wanted him to say yes. I had hoped he would, but deep down, I wasn’t sure if he would really agree. I still couldn’t believe that he wanted to be with me. This gorgeous, intelligent, sweet, and kind man wanted me, of all people.
I left his room to give him space to pack and call my best friend back. I cringed, thinking about all the naughty things Grace would tell me if the kids were not in earshot. Thankfully, I didn’t have long to obsess over it because she answered after the first ring.
“So, what did he say?” Grace asked.
“He’s packing a bag now. Are you sure about this? Last chance to back out,” I said.
“Nope. That bed needs to be exorcised and exercised desperately. Please, please, please, make new memories all over the house. Just, maybe don’t tell me where because I have a vivid imagination, and I want to visit you without my mind wandering,” Grace said casually as if we were discussing the weather.
Would Xavier even want to do things there? This was his place, but my home… was … well, it was my home. It was where I lived with my kids, where I’d raised them on my own, getting by with a bit of help from my friends, and where my ex-husband had made a few happy memories with me and a lifetime of horrible ones.
“Rei, I can feel you spiralling through the phone. What is going on in the head of yours girlfriend? Talk to me, Rei,” Grace said gently.
“I want this. I want him. But, having him stay with me at the house… Is it too soon? Is it a good idea? What if I fall apart because all of the bad memories with Greg come flooding back at the worst possible time?” I whispered.
“First of all, breathe. Look around the room. What do you see?” Grace asked me, her voice soft and reassuring.
“I see my purse beside me. I feel the leather couch I’m sitting on in Xavier’s living room and smell the coffee he brewed for us this morning. Vanilla hazelnut,” I answered.
“Good girl. Take another breath and tell me how you are feeling,” Grace encouraged.
I did as she asked, and I felt the panic start to subside. It wasn’t a panic attack. My best friend hadn’t let it get that far. She helped me ground myself when I needed her to without realizing it so I could breathe through the overwhelming feelings my doubt created.
“Rei, if you are not up to Xavier coming to the house, say the word, and I’ll stay here with the kids. You don’t need to rush anything that you are not ready for,” Grace said.
“No, I want to do this. You are right. That poor bed has only seen Greg’s sorry cheating ass in it with me. It’s just been me, my trusty vibrators and the dreams of X in my head for so long after Greg left me. It’s time. I can do this,” I said with conviction.
“I’m proud of you, Rei. Is there any chance you want me to put on some sexy sheets for you before you get here? Wait. Do you even own any sexy sheets?” Grace asked.
“Who was I ever going to be enjoying them with? No! Of course not,” I laughed.
“Well, that fucking sucks. I’ll improvise. There has to be something that will feel good in your linen closet. Let me look… oh wait, you have a cotton sateen set. Oh, that’s soft. That’s going to feel so good lying naked in,” Grace rambled.
I couldn’t decide whether to be surprised or not that Grace had located my favorite sheets, the ones that were incredibly soft and provided the most comfort. I only used them when I knew sleep would elude me. Those sheets were on my bed during significant dates like my wedding anniversary and the day Greg walked out of my life.
I hated to admit it, but they were perfect to use. I bought them just before things ended with Greg when I’d been planning a romantic evening for the two of us. It just had never happened. My ex-husband had always been too busy or staying out late with friends, who I now knew were the affairs he had on the side. A few traitorous tears fell from my eyes, and I quickly wiped them away. He didn’t deserve my tears or even my thoughts now. Why was I even thinking about Greg? Why now?
I got up and started to pace until strong arms encircled me from behind, and I felt Xavier kiss my head.
“How long will you need to get the kids ready Grace? Maybe Xavier and I can go on a motorcycle ride to give you the time you need,” I offered as I leaned against Xavier, feeling comfort just from having him hold me like this.
“Maybe two hours? Would that work for you?” Grace asked.
“That works. Just text me when you are settled at Aamon’s place with the kids, and maybe send a picture of all of you together if you can,” I replied.
“Thank you for trusting me with the kids. I promise I’ll watch over them and ensure they are safe and well behaved,” Grace said.
“I want you to have fun with your boyfriend, without having to worry about any unnecessary interruptions. I promise I’ll call and text before coming back with the kids so you aren’t surprised,” my best friend added.
“Thanks Grace. I really appreciate this,” I said.
“I know. I’m proud of you, Rei. It’s time to begin again my sweet girl. You deserve love in your life. And sex. Lot’s and lot’s of sex,” Grace added.
I groaned when Xavier chuckled softly behind me.
“He heard that didn’t he?” Grace laughed.
“Yeah, Xavier is with me,” I smiled, turning quickly to give my boyfriend a kiss on the cheek.
“Xavier, enjoy this! Give my girl some new memories to hold dear. She deserves to scream and make the neighbors talk,” Grace teased.
"Yes, ma'am," Xavier whispered as he placed soft kisses along my neck, his experienced fingers sending pleasurable shivers throughout my body.
"I'll talk to you later," I moaned and ended the call, tossing my phone onto the couch.

Prologue: Secrets and LiesRei's Point of ViewThe rain continued to pour, illuminating the sky with lightning as thunder roared. My car started to sputter and eventually came to a halt, leaving me with no choice but to pull over to the side of the road. When I tried to restart the car, I only heard a single click, indicating that we were now stranded. With another loud thunderclap and lightning flashing across the sky, my children, all under five years old, began to cry out in fear. They were frightened by the loud noises, the darkness, and my struggle to hide my growing panic.Shiloh's small voice from the back seat asked, "It's okay, right Mama?""Sure, honey. I'll call for help and try to arrange a tow truck," I replied, sounding as reassuring as possible.A tear of frustration trickled down my cheek because handling this situation alone was not what I should be doing. Greg should be here to assist, but he's not, and I have only myself to hold accountable for that. Scrambling for
Rei’s Point of ViewI gazed into the mirror, puzzled by the unfamiliar reflection. Grace whistled, catching the attention of Alex, Chloe, and Sam nearby.Grace had styled my hair in a sleek ponytail, added dangling silver earrings, and painted my nails red."Wow, you look stunning," Alex exclaimed admiringly."Behave yourself," Sam scolded, playfully hitting him on the head."Hold on, let's add something," Chloe suggested, grabbing a bold red lipstick and swiftly enhanced my lips. She then applied eyeliner and lush lashes with remarkable speed."Do you think this is okay? How do I look?" I inquired, glancing at the satin red dress hugging my figure and the striking black heels Grace had chosen for me."Rei, if we weren't friends, and I wasn't taken, I'd be all over you," Alex jokingly remarked, earning another playful smack from Sam. Despite her annoyance, I couldn't help but laugh at their banter. We met during freshman week at Hillcrest University, where I enrolled despite not meeti
Xavier’s Point of ViewShe was beautiful in an unassuming way, utterly oblivious to how she captivated everyone around her. She was sweet, kind, caring, and stunning. We had met by chance years ago, but I knew she didn't remember me. Her car had broken down on the side of the road in the pouring rain late at night, and I had stopped to check if everything was alright. I had scared the crap out of her, pulling over to the side of the road on my motorcycle to check on her, and then she apologized profusely, thanking me for waiting with her until the tow truck she had called finally arrived to help. The poor girl had her heart and dreams shattered by the local rich kid who thought the pasture was greener on the other side. He’d moved on and up, away from our little town with his new wife and family. Money could buy you a new life, it seems, as well as numb any conscience you once had.I was a few years younger than Rei. I’d always had a crush on her, but once Greg Ravenscroft set his sig
Rei’s Point of ViewThe gentle breeze rustled my sundress while I stood by his motorcycle. The sun's warmth caressed my skin, and I found solace in his company. His face was hidden behind the helmet he never seemed to remove, yet he lifted the visor to reveal his sparkling, captivating hazel eyes. I returned the gesture with a sweet smile, my blue eyes reflecting my happiness with him. Amid my chaotic life, X brought a sense of tranquility and serenity that I couldn't find elsewhere. We stood together, silently watching the sunrise, our hands intertwined. I yearned to hear his deep, resonant voice, which always touched my soul. But in this dream, he was silent, not saying a word. X had a gift for making me smile and sharing improbable stories that held me captive. He believed I needed more laughter to rid my soul of sadness and affirm my inner and outer beauty. In my dreams, X always made me laugh and feel like the most beautiful woman in the world. I wished with all of my heart he wo
Rei’s Point of View“Grace, I’ve got to go. The house won’t clean itself and there are no children here right now to completely undo everything I’ve done. If I'm fortunate, I might have a few minutes to savor the tranquility and cleanliness before heading to work," I chuckled wryly.“A home with children isn’t supposed to be spotless. Tidy? Yes. But spotless, absolutely not,” Grace groaned. No wonder she was the cool aunt; I knew she was right, but it was still nice to have a clean home. Sigh.“Rei, you promised us we could celebrate your birthday. Your birthday was a month ago,” Grace reminded me.“I’ve been busy,” I muttered.Truthfully, I didn't want to go out. I had been to the club with Grace before, and it was enjoyable, but she was always trying to set me up with someone.“I won’t try to set you up with anyone this time if you go,” Grace pleaded."Shiloh said she would babysit too if I paid her," Grace added hopefully. "You could crash at my place, like old times. Please? It'll
Xavier’s Point of ViewIt was funny until it wasn’t. But OMG, it was hilarious at the time! The nurse at the desk, a gorgeous woman in her 40s, struggled to keep a straight face as Matt explained what we were doing and how our friend ended up here. Thankfully, we hadn't taken our bikes today, and I could drive the four of us to the hospital.“Just to be clear, the three of you decided to wear garbage bags, soap yourselves up, run, and slide down a grassy hill while your friend filmed this because ….” the hot nurse’s voice trailed off.“It was free, fun, and at the time didn’t think anyone would get hurt,” Lillianna responded in a bored tone.“I’m going to get coffee for us. I think it will be a long night,” my best friend sighed.“Oh, and I like the black dress,” Lillianna grinned, pointing at the nurse’s open laptop beside her.“I know, right? It’s perfect for my friend. I’m helping her pick out an outfit to celebrate her birthday. Okay, handsome, we’ve got the beautiful lady’s opini
Grace’s Point of View"They filmed that!" I chuckled with my friend as we recalled the events leading to her visit to the hospital where Rei was on duty that night."Rei still looks stunning despite everything she's been through. I had high hopes that Greg would give her the world, not bring it crashing down," Lillianna lamented."He was a good-looking man with potential. They created three awesome kids, even with the unique names Rei chose," I nodded in agreement."How did she never catch on?" Lillianna burst into laughter, joining me in amusement."Rei was deeply in love, or what she believed was love. I wonder if she'll ever allow herself to fall again," I whispered.I took on a job to befriend Rei. She needed new friends because her old ones were moving away for university. I saw this as an opportunity to take classes at a post-secondary institution and make some money in the process. If I could become Rei's friend and help her make new connections, I would fulfill the purpose of
I texted Mary once I got home, having locked the door and turned off the light Shiloh had left on for me. Working with a wonderful coworker like Mary, even though she liked to tease me, was a stroke of luck. It meant a lot that she cared enough to check if I got home safely every time we worked an evening shift together.I never did drink the iced coffee the attractive man had kindly purchased. Although his gesture was thoughtful, I was hesitant since I didn't know him. On the other hand, Mary had no problem enjoying the mini donuts he had bought for us during the rest of our shift. After I politely declined, she even took the remaining ones home to share with her husband. I had packed a sandwich, an apple, and a water bottle for my break, which suited me just fine. Looking back, it was good that the coffee spilled; otherwise, I might have stayed up late reading when I got home.I replayed the unexpected compliment and felt myself blushing just thinking about it. While it wasn't the f
