As we drove, I couldn't help but feel nervous. I was going to see my father's ugly face and his pack after all these years, and I had no idea how it would turn out.

I fidgeted with the cash in my lap, feeling its weight and wondering if it would be enough to make him pay for what he had done. I scoffed silently.

Moses glanced at me through the rearview mirror, sensing my unease. "Everything all right, miss?" he asked.

I turned to him, my frustration bubbling over. "Oh, please just drive like you give a damn," I said, my voice tense.

"If it's because of what happened, then I'm sorry, Victoria," Moses said, his tone apologetic.

"Gosh, just stop with the 'ma'am' and call me Victoria," I snapped. "And stop worrying about me like you give a damn, because I don't."

"Your wish is my command," Moses said, his lips curling into a small smile.
