Chapter 3: From Fame To Shame

My widened eyes watch the sheathed sword still in his hold. This could only mean one thing. He was mistaken about me, and now he had to make sure he kept the happenings of tonight a secret.

"Why then are they after you?" He muttered to himself. "There has to be a reason the shadow demons are targeting you!" He paced for minutes, and I suspected he was moments away from ticking.

I stood from the bed and grabbed the wine bottle from the dresser. After taking a long sip, I passed it to him. He raised a brow at my gesture.

"One last drink before I die by your hands? It's clear I'm not the Ember-whatever-you-called-it witch."

"I can see that, but Khal is never wrong. There's something I'm missing, and listening to you yap is not helping."

I still held out the hand holding the bottle. "You said they eat humans, too. Maybe I pissed off the gods and the universe. I tend to drag a lot of attention because of my social status."

He refused the bottle after three more attempts from me. I returned to the bed and helped myself with everything. I might as well be drunk while my heart was being ripped out.

"Hey, what is your name?" I slurred, leaning over the pillow and propping myself up with my elbow. "I didn't catch yours. It would be a shame if I didn't before I die. You were so perfectly created."

He turned to me. I missed the view of his broad back and delicious-looking shoulders. But his face and biceps were a pleasant replacement. It was the alcohol talking, but at least I was numb on the inside and immune to my raging emotions.

My jaw slacked while watching him approach. I thought this was it, but he only helped me cover a breast that had popped out of the blanket when I leaned over. His hand grazed my skin. Heat creeped up my neck. I hadn't even realised it. At least I would actually die of embarrassment.

"Cage. Jonathan Cage."

I nodded like a drunk, struggling to keep myself up. I still felt the burn of his touch on my breast. Just a whisper of it, though. But it was there. The alcohol also made the spot between my thighs throb with liquid heat.

I shook the wild thoughts away, giggling under my breath for a second. Even in danger, my mind still wandered off to sex.

"You know what, Cage? How about you give me one day to make everything right? I would write my will and a suicide note to Ever." I spoke on a whim, rambling through my thoughts like a broken record. "Let me wrap things up before you kill me. It's the least you can do for coming into my perfect life and ruining it."

"And if the shadow demons get to you before I do? What happens then?"

I made a thinking face, still slurring. "I'll hire you as my body guard for twenty-four hours because I'm rich and famous. Just one day. Only you can kill me, Cage..."

I drifted into sleep. There was so much trouble around me when my eyes were open, but while closed, everything disappeared into a black void.

The next morning, I woke up still breathing. Cage was nowhere to be found. My life seemed back to normal, but I couldn't shake off the thought that he could actually come back in twenty-four hours.

I tied my bathroom robe again, rushing to the door after I heard a knock. Pulling it open, I found two men with ID's revealing that they are from the police station.

"Sorry to bother you, ma'am. But we found your car bashed and empty with your cell phone underneath the driver's seat."

I snatched the phone from his hand before he could even finish talking. I could finally speak to Ever. But then I couldn't possibly tell her everything or else she would be in danger, too.

"I've been looking all over for it. My bouncer dropped me off, and I must have forgotten this in the car."

"Street footage and the black box from your car are missing. We assume the driver is, too."

"Oh, my God. Hank is missing!" I tried my best to keep a neutral-worried face, but I overdid it. "Where could he be?"

"We are currently investigating to know the status of Mr. Hank's whereabouts, but we implore you to be careful."

The detectives said that and left. I knew they hadn't found Hank's body. It didn't mean it didn't happen. Someone cleared the scene before the cops could arrive.

Ever was already calling the second I turned my phone on.

"Blue Meyer, what in the world was that stunt you pulled yesterday? I heard nothing from you or Hank!"

"Ever, calm down." I sighed, walking towards the fridge to get some juice. "I'll explain everything at the office. See you in a few—"

I turned to the kitchen island, and the glass jug instantly slipped from my hand, crashing to pieces on the marble tiles. There was a handwritten note facing me. I picked it up.

"Twenty-four hours, Blue. Clean up your life before I take it."

Cage had left me a note.

"Hello? Blue?!"

I pressed the end button as I practised my breathing. Everything was still heading south. I didn't realise I had said all those things during my drunken state last night. How do I give up Fairy Beauty? My blood and sweat.

My heartbeat accelerated as I ran to check every room in my architecture-styled duplex. He wasn't here, but I couldn't help the feeling that someone was watching me.

An hour later, I took an Uber to work after calling a sudden press conference. Fate wanted me dead. I was only stalling because no one could help me now.

Ever met me depressed in my office ten minutes to the time. She seemed worried.

"Blue, talk to me. What is happening? This is unlike you. You don't run from your parties and call sudden press conferences."

I sat behind my desk, hanging my shoulders as the ache in my head swelled. I had no response.

"Do you feel stressed again? Should I call the shrink...what can I do to help you!"

I snapped, already on my last buttons. "There's nothing wrong with me, Ever!"

"You are lying."

"I don't need help. Now leave!" I screamed, and Ever finally budged, storming out of my office.

I bent my head and placed them in my arms on my desk, crying pitifully. What did I do to deserve this? I wasn't so strong like I acted the previous night. I didn't want to die or lose my company. My life was still worth living.

Yet I sat up, wrote the note to Ever, and emailed a new version of my will to my lawyer while crying.

When it was time for the press conference, I walked into the room on wobbly feet.

The reporters were already seated, waiting anxiously for what I had to say. Just yesterday, I was celebrating a new season for my beauty Empire. Today, I was about to deliver shocking news.

I climbed the stairs and walked to the podium. After clearing my throat, I began.

"On this day, the twenty-fourth of January, I, Blue Meyer, is stepping down as the CEO of Fairy Beauty. Ever Dawson shall not only step us as the face of the empire, but as my replacement."

The reporters went wild. Their cameras flashed at an alarming rate, and the pool of questions I received was drowning me.

"I—"

A flash struck my eyes, and at the instant, I recognised the shift. The questions stopped coming as everyone stared in awe. They were all staring at me. At my eyes.

I froze on the stage, fiddling with my fingernails. Now, the world would find out the truth that something was wrong with me. Cage would also be discovered, and only I would pay for it. The gasps rose. I feared them. My feet fell back a step, and just when I was about to crumble, broad shoulders stepped in the gap and pulled me in. It was him. Cage. My face was currently buried in his chest, but if I didn't hate him so much for making me give up my life's legacy, I would have snuggled closer to inhale all of him. The enemy smelled good. Too good. "What are you doing here?" I croaked. "A bodyguard must protect his owner at all costs." His hand patted down my hair. The other one slipped around my waist, pulling me close. If we weren't faking this to save ourselves, I would have been convinced. The reporters would forget the past minute and the sudden colour of my eyes. They had seen a bigger dirt to gossip about. Blue Meyer and a man who's not Noah. It was the news of the decad

I looked at him like he had grown three heads. He was definitely crazy. It was one thing to trust and escape with the same man who wanted to kill me a few hours ago, but he saved my life and I acknowledge that. This was just not it. "You've got to be kidding me." I shook my head, turning away and raking a hand through my hair. "Alpha Khal of Kandare sent me. He's the only one that can save your life but you must get married to him." He insisted, grabbing my arms and pulling me to face him. "I'm marrying no one!" "It's a good thing I don't answer to you, Blue." "I won't leave with you, Cage. If those are your conditions, then I won't!" I jutted my chin, hoping he won't see right through my act because on the inside, I was only just a scared woman who didn't want to die. "So, you would rather die in the hands of those shadow demons?" He stood so close, dropping his voice by an octave. "I thought I was the only one allowed to kill you." I breathed in his scent, shutting my eyes

I frowned at my surroundings when I couldn't see him anywhere. My heart had started beating too fast because I knew I couldn't afford to be left alone for even second. The car had been parked at a cliff. He had abandoned me in the middle of nowhere, so that those demons can feast on me. I could feel my breaths coming out shorter. What if the demons were right outside the door, waiting for me to take the first step outside and then they'd attack? I was shit scared. I had never been this scared or alone in my life and I had been lonely all my life, but that was an understatement compared to this. With shaky hands, I pushed the door open and stepped out. It was a windy night. The wind blew locks of my hair over my forehead and eyes. I kept pulling them away, only realizing he had covered me with a throw blanket while I was asleep. I limped over to the edge when I didn't see any signs of danger. A part of me told me they would come. If I could just jump over now and save myself the pai

Cage was on his feet at the instant because they had attacked us without delay. I was still on the seat as Cage blocked them off. He was getting outnumbered, and we would slowly start to lose. I broke the bottle on the table against the wall and stood at his side. I had no idea what I was doing, but when our backs touched, I knew I had to protect him. I stood with the broken glass held out in defence. Cage and I bid time. The others snarled at us, too. Their eyes were completely as black as night. "You should have just stayed put, Blue." "I came to help." "You are not actually helping." We were bantering, forgetting the main point of why we were even here and the dangers around us. It was always easy to lose focus while around him. I just realised this fact. "We can't stay here. Let's clear out a carriage and lock ourselves in until the ride is over. They shouldn't be able to get past these steel doors." His eyes flickered to me for a jiffy, and I almost smiled at the fact th

A corner of his mouth curved up as he watched me, and my very brave, or depending on the outcome, stupid, attempt at seducing him. I wondered if he'd let me seduce him. The low words rumbling from his chest. “You're not mine, not in this life. I shouldn't want you so much. And yet I can't seem to help myself.” I didn't care if he was saying yet another one of his weird ass witch bullshit. I wanted him, and I wanted him now. I tried to take the lead again, rubbing against him, but he did something that shocked me into stillness. He slid his large hand to the back of my neck, lowered his head to smell me, running his nose from my collarbone along my neck, and stopping just behind my ear. My toes curled, and I forgot all about the pain in my foot where I'd hurt my ankle and torn open the toe of my skin. The intimacy of such a personal action sent a powerful shudder through me, stimulating the tingle in my stomach and between her legs. A moan escaped from the back of my throat

The traitor gave me an amused look before walking up to meet the woman.I watched them as Cage bent to the floor and picked up a black gym bag.He came to me and dropped the bag on the bed beside me, then gave me a pointed look."There are clothes in there. They're for you. Shower and dress. And be fast about it."Why was he suddenly being so curt with me? Was it because of the woman? My eyes slid to the dark-haired beauty again. She looked really hot in the leather jacket and denim pants she was wearing. And then the sword. Had people always carried things around like t

It wasn't Raven, I told myself repeatedly.I searched her face, my eyes hooded as I took in the sword Blue held in her hands. Her grip was loose and awkward on the hilt of the sword, and I knew instinctively that she could not fathom the real enormity of what she'd just done. She'd unsheathed the sword. She swiveled around, looking for any more shadow demons. But they had all fled. The power in Raven's sword was unfathomable. It was a spelled sword.Only Raven could fight with it, drawing out her energy and linking her soul to the sword. And she had drawn it out it."They all ran away. They've never done that before."I blinked. "Yes." I stared deep into her blue eyes, the one thing that made her different from Raven. My Raven had had amber eyes, the color of sunset. Or perhaps a half human, half horse. What were they called again?Cage's face wasn't exactly approachable. She hated my guts apparently.I peered around the pillar and saw Ever's beautiful beast of a car zoom off. I relaxed s little more. That meant Ever was gone. And I could now leave the precinct without her even seeing me. She still believed me to be involved in this somehow.I came out of the pillar when the car drove off, letting out a sigh of relief. Now I don't have to say anything to Ever.I turned to start walking, when I saw her. Ever, she watched me with eyes that were like daggers. My heart started racing again. I rattled out, as my hands gripped the edge of the table in a grip that made my knuckles white.Ever continued to speak into her phone, telling them to be fast.My mouth dropped open in astonishment, wondering what the fuck I'd said, to make her call her bulldogs on me. "Ever, I'm not threatening you, or anything like that." I told her with an urgency, holding my hands palm out in an open show of honesty. "I swear, it's really me. I'm Blue. I told you it's a difficult to explain situation."Her stony look could have shot me right in between my eyes for all the hate and mistrust in them. "What have you done with Blue? You wicked bitch! BlueI dozed on the chair, my body trying to catch up on the hours of lost sleep from yesterday night on the hard bed.I sat in a chair facing the reception area in the center of the lobby. There was a row of long benches facing the reception area and I had picked one, several other people had since joined me on the bench.I yawned again, staring at the clock behind the receptionists as I wondered why Ever wasn't out yet. It was already four in the evening and I had to be back at the shelter by six at least.No. No matter what, I wouldn't go back to that place.I had to convince Ever. All of this was mine anyway, so why was I suffering? In a different body, or in my body, it was still all the same. I was Blue Meyer. The elevator doors opened with a ping and Ever walked out, her long legs moving away from me so fast. She looked gorgeous in a knee length halter dress that had no place in the workplace. Her hair hung down in curly braids and she was absorbed in her phone.I snapped to an

BlueI swiped at my face to make sure I was seeing right. He was standing in front of the door, just inside the doorway while I faced him, trying to get out."You." I breathed, my brain trying to figure out what the hell was going on.I'd seen this jacket before, I realized. He was wearing a brown jacket, with frayed arms. He'd been the one in front of me on the line last night. I gasped. "How long have you been following me?"He looked at me, and I finally saw his face in the bright light of day.Brown hair was dark now. Perhaps the glow of the lantern in that din of a dungeon had made me think it brown, when it was black. His eyes were brown though, and the thick eyebrows rose up and down as his lips tipped in frown. He sidestepped me, walking past me to one of the bathrooms. He entered a stall and slammed the door in my face, all the while staring stonily at everything else but me, and saying nothing. The door banged against the frame and slid open a fraction, but he made no furthe

Blue"Hey redhead! She smelled of sweat and a bone deep tiredness."Some of us got here before you, and you think you can just cut and get in like that? Think you're smart?"she barked, her words landing directly in my face.I stretched out a hand and pushed her back as she stumbled back two paces. "You're spitting in my face." I mumbled, wiping my face with the back of my hand.I didn't want her to get louder than she already was.She turned to the rest of the people on the line, waving her hands frantically at me. "She cut in. I saw her before, I was definitely before her on the line, how come she's now in front of me?"I refused to speak to her. This was ridiculous enough as it is. I could hear the heavy thud of their feet, a lot of them by the sound of it.In a panic, I shot Modesta a pleading look. "Please do something!" A sound had me sitting up in the dark and crawling slowly to press my face between the bars.Someone had turned off the lantern that had burned consistently for the last few days. Everywhere was pitch black, as even the holes I took for windows had been locked some days ago.I sniffed the air as something strange filtered into my cell, and my head fell back.It was a pungently sweet smell. It made me drowsy, and I felt the pull of sleep against my eyelids.Startled, I shook my head side to side, trying to stay awake. I'd been too anxious to sleep just seconds ago, so why was I feeling so sleepy now?A shado
